- Hello everyone… this is the video I’ve been wanting to make and hopefully the one most of you with this problem have been waiting to see. In this video I figure out what is the water leak on my Honda in the spare tire well. I hope this sheds some light on all who commented that they have this problem and all who are just curious. wow! not sure why the engineers even put these holes these in the first place! My 2012 CRV also had this exact issue after hurricane Beryl. Thank you so much for posting this video, I had been scratching my head for hours.

Yeah, you nailed it brother! A couple weeks ago, I inherited a 2008 CRV and upon checking the condition of the spare, found that the spare tire was rust-fused to the hold down bolt and the jack tools had rusted themselves together in the black tool bag. Water had been in and out of there for 15 years, I guess. I had to use a cutoff wheel to get the spare out, pulled the bumper, did all the remediation, and now, no leaks. Thank you for this!!

Did also remove the rear crash bar? Wondering if just sealing all the plastics caps is enough.

You’re a lifesaver Nick!! I’ve been having this problem for years since I bought my crv new (2015). Started having issues a few years after purchase. I just went and checked the interior spot welded seam and found water!! Now to hopefully get it fixed. Mechanics always looked at the skylight drains 😑

Hey Nick....Thanks for the very informative video! A few days ago I happened to look into the spare tire well of my 2011 Honda CRV and "lo and behold", it had about 2" of water in it! I hadn't looked in there for a while and it took me totally by surprise! My immediate thought was WTF did this come from?! The only thing I could think of was possibly it was coming from one of the drains from the sunroof as I did encounter that in an old Acura EL that my son had years ago.(The drain hose had come apart and the water was flowing into the spare wheel well.) However, after doing a Google Search and watching your video on TH-cam, I had a closer look and it certainly does appear that the water is coming in from the seam (on the right side) where the two pieces of metal are spot welded together. So, guess I have some work ahead of me but at least I now know where to start! Thanks again!!

I am glad I saw your video as I have a mysterious leak in the spare tire as well. I will do the hose test and see if there is water coming from the inside seam. I am a huge fan of "The Right Stuff", a mechanic friend turned me on to it. It is not silicone, it is closer to being a liquid rubber. When you said I will use some silicone to seal it, I immediately said to myself, I will be using the right stuff if mine is leaking. (probably will since it is bound to leak eventually) It is made to make gaskets and it works great as a gasket dressing. But it is super sticky, and will hold anything together even if they don't make continuous contact as it will fill the gap and stick like crazy. I use a container every year. Anything you want to hold together or seal, this will do it. Its hard to work with and its a bear to get off of your fingers. It is expensive, but once you start to use it for repairs, its worth what it cost and then some. To my knowledge, there is nothing like it or even close.

I'd like to know what the purpose of those plugs are for usually they're for access points for mechanics like for wiring or something but there is nothing behind those plugs I could see that needs access to. It's just holes with plugs that apparently leak. Why isn't it just solid metal? Is Honda trying to save on the cost of steel? Six needless holes...8 if you count the ones below the tail lights.

Just done mine so thanks for pointing out this issue! It was also driving me up the wall so hopefully it'll resolve the leak. I also put silicone around the screw and bolt holding the bumper on the vertical sides of the boot as I had water tracking its ways from the roof and down across these too. Another path in I suppose!

Thank you for posting. I learned a lot. I noticed on my 2010 crv that the rubber grommet holding power feed to the tail light at top of hatch widow was looser than well you know. It's outside of the hatch gasket. I applied some sealant around it. See if it fixes the leak.

I purchased a super clean crv from a honda dealer but then found the water under the spare.
They tried but couldnt find the leak.

Very thorough video. FYI, I just purchased a 2013 with this issue, the problem continues past 2011. It had a badly cracked taillight, I thought that was the culprit but it wasn't. I'll be investigating as you did to see if mine is leaking in the same place.

That was hilarious. I actually laughed out loud authentically after that speed it up portion where you got the passenger side, rear quarter interior plastic piece removed and then you're on the other side in the rear leaning in "I'm having a bourbon" I laughed before you said "because I can"I just thought it was classic!

Great video, i've just carried out the same repairs to my 2017 CRV to stop water leaking into the spare wheel well and it worked, but I also sealed around the white plastic air vent between the near side rear wheel and the near side rear corner (you can see it when mechanic 2.0 removes the bumper) the seal is made of sponge an water will almost certainly get past the seal in time and leak directly into the boot. Seems a shame not to seal around this vent while the bumper is off.

Very helpful vid, thank you. My daughter's 2007 started having this problem. Not sure when it started, but it was after several tail light replacements where the assemblies were removed, so those seemed like likely suspects. There are also a couple of plastic caps further down on each side below the tail lights that looked suspect. Silicone around the tail light clip holes and the caps didn't fully fix the problem though, so I applied 3M seam sealer to the rear overlap seam which as you found is where the water was getting in. That seems to have done the trick. I haven't gone to the trouble of removing the rear bumper as you did. I don't know where the external water is going, but it no longer seems to be getting into the spare tire well.
Yes, seam sealing the inside overlap as I did will keep the water out, but not pulling off the bumper and sealing all the caps will allow water to enter in between the inner and outer structures and thus allowing premature rust to develop causing more problems down the road. Depending on how long you keep your CRV. Just food for thought.

@@themechanic2.060 Being OCD and a worrier as I am, I did pull the rear bumper cover and crash bar, cleaned up around the bolt holes and plugs and sealed with 3M seam sealer as you did. I also siliconed the four bumper cover bolts for good measure too. Pretty simple job that only took a couple of hours, thanks to you. This is actually my daughter's car, handed down from me in 2012. Still in great shape with 160K miles on it. Thanks.
BTW, I did see surface rust around the bolt holes that secure the crash bar. It's a good bet that at least some of the water was getting in through there. I scraped off what gasket material was there, applied sealer around the holes and studs and also around the mating surfaces on the crash bar.

Hi Mechanic, I own a 2012 CRV LX and am having the same issue with water buildup! I've owned this car about 8 years and have never noticed any standing water issue until I went to clean it recetly. I clean it regularly and also keep jumpers and other rope back there, so I see that area frequently, but this is new. There has been debris buildup over time and my place of work last year had tons of trees in the parking lot, so that could have been the tipping point. Ive noticed my water coming from the same two spot-welded spots where the rear plates overlap, as well as in the rear corners... I will try the one minute gasket maker and see if that does the trick.
Yes.. your 4th Gen CRV has almost the same rear structure as the 3rd Gen. The fix I shared in the video should be the same cause for your water leak issue in the spare tire tire well. Pull the rear bumper and get to sealing! Thanks bud. 👊🏼 keep me posted.

Thank you for the kind words. Other than what I showed in the video, the only other things that can leak through are the hatch seal, taillight gaskets and roof rack if there is rot up there. Other than that I don’t know. Good luck on your search and keep me posted. 👊🏼

Thank you so much for your kind comment. The bolts are 12mm and nuts are 13mm. The repair has been perfect so far. I’m really happy with it. It’s a permanent fix for this problem.

I feel your frustration, my guy! I have an 08 and I had the same exact problem. My OCD lead me to the same fix, I started watching and I was saying it's the plugs like you could hear me lol. The 2013 is a 4th Gen, but I believe Honda uses an almost identical rear structure as the 3rd Gen. Should be the same culprit.

thanks man. looks like exacatly the issue I have....not looking forward to pulling off bumper and all the work, but leak is the same 2 spots. did you need to seal any of the higher up locations on either right or left side as you go up sides?

I have the same problem with my 09 CRV. I gasket-sealed all of the plastic plug grommets but still seeing seepage. The only thing I did differently though was that I didn't remove the crash bar. Did you also gasket-sealed the area where the nut and bolt are when installing back the crash bar? Great vid by the way, I am susbscribing.
Thank you. Yes I did seal around all the bolts and nuts where the crash bar attaches. Try that and re sealing everything I did in the video along with seam sealing the inner structure as I showed as well. Good luck and Thanks again 👊🏼

Did you watch the entire video? It wasn’t the tail light seal, it was exactly what I showed in the video for my 3rd gen CRV. You have a 4th gen. The tail light seal was your issue? And you resolved it? That’s great!

2011 CRV.... Just found water in my spare tire well and could not for the life me understand where it was coming from. Thanks for the video. Did you investigate drilling some drain holes anywhere? Would there even be an accessible area underneath those caps you sealed to put a couple drain holes?

I notice there are 2 black plugs similar to the ones you sealed higher below the brake lights. Have you noticed a leak from there as well and also, did you seal those as well? Thanks again.
I did not find those plugs leaking, but sealed them as well.
good thing it never occured to my 3rd gen crv. it was parked for years outside and have had to experience typhoons. maybe the rear spoiler helps deflect rain water from directly hitting that opening on top of the rear door.

Not a good idea to seal the interior seam. Because if water is leaking behind and pooling it will rot. The thought is want to know if those plugs or any other seals are failing I would want to know that to fix them.

Can you access these grommets from underneath without talking the bumper off I wonder?
Unfortunately you can not. The bumper has to be removed.
I replaced the weatherstrip and caulked all the seams around and in the spare tire area, I also caulked all along underneath the weatherstrip where the 2 metal body plates meet with the seam sealer which worked great but that really still smells very strong. I didn’t remove weird patching at the bottom of the spare tire area, I did not prime and paint the rusty areas, I will do it in summer when I can air it out more easily. Does anybody know of a spray or paint or epoxy that would cover the seam sealer and its smell ?
Great job! Only use an interior based seam sealer and a good automotive paint and primer. Remember if you have bare metal to use a self etching primer first. I did a video on the actual water repair… my very first video.

Mine is come from the roof at the hatch, dripping on heavy rain. I wonder if I use a smoke machine put inside the car and look for smoke come out would that easy to locate the leak? Thanks bro!
Sounds like the hatch seal on yours. Best way is to use a water hose and taking apart some of the interior.

Unlike your where its coming from the left and right side, mine,s coming from at the middle part of that area, seems like below the plastic cover is where leak is because i see a water mark from that area

@@themechanic2.060 I found my leak it was in such a weird spot, you know the bracket that holds the spare tire down. It was leaking at the seam. I just went underneath the car and blasted it with Rubber Under coating, boy I got away with that one

I have exactly same leak. Removed bumper, sealed all grommets with tiger seal. Sealed clips and bolts under headlights. And after first rain boot wet again. Where else i can look? Thanks
If you went over everything in the video as I did and still have water in your spare tire well, try checking the gaskets for the tail lights and rear hatch seal. Good luck!
@@themechanic2.060i will strip again. My car was standing couple years so still finding loads of dirt and leaves everywhere. I put sealant around tail light clips but there are no such gaskets. Will remove hatch seal to clean too. Thank you for response
Ok. Removed all trim and was sitting inside when missus sprayed water. Now still leaking from headlight harness seal and bumper clips.
Excellent. I knew you’d find it.
What would happen if I just seam sealed the inside and not the grommets?
Then water would fill up in between the inner and outer structures. There would be standing water in there and leak elsewhere plus cause rust and rot to eventually occur. Seal the grommets. Always.

No. There is no access to those grommets with out removing the bumper. Everything in the video shows exactly what has to be done. You can do it!
