    We bought a very low mileage 2008 in 2010 to pull behind our motorhome. The motorhome is history. The Honda is still going strong as our daily (only) driver. It’s the best car I’ve ever owned. Regular oil and filter changes and one set of tires have been the only maintenance needed. It’s still under 100K miles. Since I’m 76, it’s looking like the CR-V will outlast me.

      My 2011 CRV which has over 300,000 miles on it, has strut and trim issues as well. The back tires wear on the inside leading to cupping. I've tried to have it fixed but there is still a bit of an angle on them. Other than that, it's been an almost perfect car other than the driver window just stopped working. I have a '99 also with 338,000 on it. Still my daily driver. The only major issue was I needed a valve job. The owner's manual states to adjust the valve lash at 100,000 miles. the interval is actually about 30,000 miles. Only the U.S. manual says 100,000 miles, the rest say 30,000. Honda would not fix it, but they did issue a TSB sometime in the 2000's. Too late for me. The symptoms usually begin as a check engine light that reveals misfires in one or more cylinders, along with a rough idle. I ended up with 2 burned exhaust valves. The root cause (I found out later) was soft valve seats which allowed the lash to diminish gradually over time. My engine is the 2.0L 4-cyl. non-vtec B20Z. Other than that, it's been a good vehicle.

You can replace the seal but it will start leaking again eventually. Replace the whole valve assembly to start with is my advice and while you’re at it, do the valve cover gasket and oil filter housing seal.

    209,000 miles on my 3rd generation 2009 LX and going strong. Basically trouble free. Engine and transmission are rock solid smooth and amazing. Never had the valves adjusted. As others have noted, it just keeps going. At 200,000 I replaced all the shocks/struts with new Honda OEM parts. The ride had gotten a bit floaty and the new struts brought back the old taut but comfortable feel and tight handling. I am expecting it will hit 300,000 easy. It is just been an amazing vehicle.

The A/C issue you described happened to me at approximately 85K miles, yes, I had the dealer replace the entire A/C system at an approximate cost of $1,900.00. Dealer told me the issue was a lack of oil in the compressor and recommended having an oil charge added to A/C system every 100K miles, I never added a charge and haven’t suffered any new A/C system failures. Since I’ve reached 250K miles, I have to replace the alternator and water pump. This car has been the most trouble free and cost effective vehicle I’ve owned in the past 38 years.

    @susanod311 3 ปีที่แล้ว +45

    Great explanation overall but I’d like to expand on the 3rd generation door lock issues. I had an 08 LX and around 110k miles, the rear passenger door lock actuator failed, leaving it stuck between lock/unlock and couldn’t be adjusted manually. That triggered an auto-lock for all 5 doors, and left it either unresponsive to the remote or would unlock and immediately re-lock. Key entry was difficult because 1) only the driver door was equipped and 2) the auto-lock was always engaged making it difficult to turn the key to unlock, and often didn’t work at all. Plus, the remote key fob isn’t designed for that and would easily break. I had two babies in car seats making this situation incredibly dangerous. I had to roll all the windows down before exiting just to make sure I could get my kids out. My choices were to get it fixed ($2000+) or disable the locks by removing the door panel and unplugging the locks, making it impossible to secure my vehicle which is what I did. The rear lift gate wouldn’t unlock at all. Honda was no help at all, probably because it was a widespread problem and should have been subject to a recall. I even contacted CPSC about it. It was 10k past the warranty window. So... if you’re test driving a 3rd generation CR-V, make sure to put those locks to work or be handy enough to know how to replace them.

    We have 6 Hondas on our driveway. Among them we have a 2007 CRV and a 2014 CRV. Both have been reliable with regular maintenance and the odd problem easily repaired. These two generations are solid choices. However in 2015, things changed, and in my opinion not for the good. The introduction of the CVT transmission in 2015 was done to decrease the cost of manufacture, however the long term reliability of them is still in question. The other problem is with the direct injection introduced in 2015. This is a not problem initially, however over time, the intact valves become dirty and coated with carbon, causing the combustion process to get affected, resulting in decreased gas mileage, idling issues, reduced efficiency. The cost to clean the intake valves is expensive and complicated, and the emphasis is on complicated. Mechanics are not prefect, and when ever you require a complicated service, you open the door to mistakes being made (costly ones!). If Honda reverts back to port injection, this problem is solved. In Honda's newer turbo models, the issues of direct injection is amplified. If Honda did like Toyota and designed both port and direct injection on the same engine, lots of these issues would be resolved. It's a matter of cost and design. Till they fix this, I cannot recommend a Honda that has only a direct injection (turbo is not the problem) and I'm concerned with the CVT transmissions being not a good choice as well.

    Yes, the door locks will automatically lock/unlock when car is put into drive/park or if you come to a stop for a few seconds. This is a programmable feature and can be changed. I noticed this when I bought my used CRV. I've since programmed my CRV to stop this auto-lock feature. It's no wonder that the lock mechanism will fail sooner than normal because they were being activated umpteen times a day. I Googled on how to reprogram them. Interesting that this isn't mentioned in car reviews that I've watched so far.

    My 2008 Honda CRV EX 2.4 has 193,000 miles. I did replace the A/C compressor and it has worked great for the last 3 years. I remedied the lock issue by shutting off the automatic lock system which is outlined in the owners manual. for some reason Honda was trying to be like General Motors and having the doors automatically lock when you put the car in drive or put the car in park. No issues since I shut that feature off.

    Thank you so so much. There are great mechanics and there are bad mechanics and no one likes to hear the words "we cannot find anything wrong" or " we cannot duplicate the problem". No one likes to take a car to the shop that is not making a noise until after it returns from the shop. I would like to get a newer Honda CRV and your video is very valuable. A friend has a 2000 CRV 2WD with 180,000 miles. One mechanic will say it needs these, another will say something else. I thought it needed shocks/struts but the mechanic said those were ok but it needed motor mounts. The car did not have a severely bad ride and tire wear was normal. My friend replaced all three mounts and now the car sways and nose dives like a boat and it was not doing that before the mount repair. We got wheel alignment 2 wheels only (?) and tie rod ends and it is better but still 90% boat sway especially when hitting bumps. They now say it needs ball joints and upper control arms and the repair list will go on and on for deep pockets. Now they want to do the struts and shocks but I am not sure that will help. It drives like the frame has completely shifted on the car. Help! Help! Every mechanic says something different.

One of the reasons I ditched Japanese brands is the fact that they don't provide a loaner while the car is in their shop for warranty work.

My gf was hesitant to get it because of the mileage, but I told her these older models are built to last especially the history on the one we got it was a no brainer and my prior experience with Hondas (accords, civics) has been pretty good so hopefully ours doesn't give us any issues. Thanks for the video very informative! 👍

    I randomly bought one of these things in a car lot in northern Minnesota, a 2013 with 112,000 miles for a road trip and I've driven it across the country twice already and now we're driving through Arizona for the winter. It just keeps going and going! I even loaded an oil drain tank on a roof rack so I can swap out the oil in parking lots for free. It just loves putting on Miles.

    Thanks Greg! I'm the 3rd owner of a 03 CR-V EX model and about 10 - 12 years ago I had to replace the a/c. It cost me around $1,000. I was told they only last about 100,000 miles. I'm at 150,000 or so miles now and the a/c has been working fine ever since. Just recently, my driver's side door lock stopped working. It won't open or lock with the remote and just the past couple of days I've had a hard time getting the key in the lock. When neither of those work, I have to unlock the passenger side front door with the key and lean over to reach the driver's side door lock to unlock the doors. What a pain! Wish I could just beam in! I called a local Honda dealer and they said the actuator has failed and that a new one would be $350. Looks like I'll be leaning across the passenger seat for a time... I also had one other issue in 2013 when the car was 10 years old. I was traveling across state with the car loaded down with "stuff" from the sale of mom's estate when suddenly I would give it the gas and the car would vibrate and not accelerate very well at all. Turned out the valves needed adjusting. I went to a non-Honda mechanic whom I trust and he did the work for $600. Been running fine ever since.
    Almost forgot another major issue that I had with the 6 CD changer. It completely failed about 5 years ago! I called the dealer and they said they probably wouldn't even be able to find a replacement and it would be cost prohibitive if they could. Thank God it came with a cassette player - with an adaptor I can play my ipod. So, I guess I've had a few issues. But I still like the car.

    I was going to buy a 2018 CRV but read about the problem with DI 1.5 L turbos and the gas-in-oil & valve carbonization problems, and opted instead for a 2018 RAV - Toyota doesn't mess with turbos, and while they do have DI (like most manufacturers these days) they included injectors in the intake manifold to prevent the dirty valve issue.

    • @jackrabbit5047
      @jackrabbit5047 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks. I was reluctant to buy a 2019 RAV because its a new design and engine, and I didn't want to be a guinea pig (even Toyota isn't perfect!), and was able to snag a new base (LE) 2018 (FWD) which the dealer still had. Good price and financing rates - got them to throw in a set of Michelin ICE (they often have promotions on these when you buy in December) on rims and remote starter for the wife. I debated about AWD, but they only had them in black (ugh!), and I think FWD suits my needs (and potentially fewer maintenance problems down the road). I'm very happy with it. Not as "luxurious" inside as a Honda, but really drives just as nice (if not a bit better when comparing base models). Mine is silver, but saw some white ones on the lot and they look hilarious - front end is like a storm trooper helmet! Toyotas aren't always the prettiest cars, but I've always had great luck with them (my former car was a Matrix with over 220 000 Km, never had to do anything other than change fluids and brakes - gave it to my dad because I wanted him to have a good, low-cost/low-maintenance car). When you buy from a dealer it can sometimes be advantageous to buy a new car rather than used, because despite the price difference, you usually get good financing rates with a new car plus full warranty. I paid $26000 (CDN) for the new 2018, whereas they had a 2016 with 30 000 km for about $23 000 - granted that one was AWD, but again, you take a hit on the warranty (getting only the residue that's left) and finance rates are significantly higher for used vehicles. Just hold firm on all the "extras" the finance guy tries to sell you, like extended warranties (not worth the paper they're printed on) and rust proofing (I Krown my vehicles annually).

      @@AJ-xm4xc Oh, sorry, I'm up in Canada, where there is a lot of salt on our roads in winter, and Krown is a company that applies an oily rust proofing agent to every part of the car body (including drilling holes into door frames and panels to ensure it gets into every nook and cranny. Its generally regarded as one of the best rust-proofing oils there is, with great penetration into seams, etc.. I don't know if you have it in the States, though I'm sure you have similar products. Beats anything sold by dealerships (most of which are gimmicks anyway, and their rust proofing warranties are not worth the paper they are printed on).

    I recommend a RAV4 over a CR-V. I have an 2002 CR-V with 206k miles. It's a good car but not without problems. I have owned for 13 years and had so many repairs. I replaced O2 sensor twice, heater core (expensive repair ~$900), starter, crankshaft sealed (bc leaks oil), replaced driver side CV axle bc boot cover torn, VTEC sensor, knocking sensor, and door lock actuator. I have done all the repairs myself except for the heater core. Other than that, engine, transmission, alternator, Ac, and radiator are all good. If I had to bring in to a shop for all the repairs, then it would be a money pit. My wife 2007 RAV 4 has 180k miles and the only repair was replaced the water pump bc it leaked. It was a diy repair and the part was $50. bucks.

    One important problem to mention about this platform (CRV/Element) is an excessive rear negative camber, due to the rear upper control arms that come from factory, are not being of an adjustable type. So you end up with excessive rear tire wear. And the older the car gets and the more suspension wears out and gets lower, the more negative camber you’ll have in the rear. It’s an easy fix though, by getting aftermarket adjustable control arms

    Growing up we'd buy 3-5 cars and trucks every year. We bought Chevy, Ford, Buick, Olds, Dodge. After college I bought Toyota and liked it. After Toyota we bought our first 2009 Honda CR-V LX base model. 150k miles later it's still the family favorite. We bought a 2012 CRV a few years later for our second CRV. The only problems we've had over the last decade plus is replacing the starter twice on the 2009 - cheap and easy fixes. I'd agree with the trim issues but I don't care. The 2012 has that valve rocker arm adjustment issue... hard to find someone good enough to tune that properly. Best engines/cars I've ever driven/owned. on the subject of oil dilution.
    Your oil's viscosity is constantly reduced causing a slightly (less lubrication) increased metal on metal friction (wear).
    The owners manual tells us that using the wrong oil will damage the engine and the warranty will be void. Diluting the oil is the same as using the wrong oil viscosity.
    Hondas without the 1.5L turbo are known to last 15 - 18 years worry free.
    A 6 year old Honda with a 1.5L turbo will have as much wear as a 16 year old 2.4L non turbo engine.

    I had the 2011 CRV SE. It was great vehicle, fun to drive and a juggernaut for the miles. I bought the vehicle in 2016 after the original owner traded it in. The dealer wasn't the original service provider, nor the seller for that matter since it was a Toyota dealership in town. Ironically, the following year, they grabbed the Honda rights and built a new dealership. While I still have a positive impression of CRVs and would get one again in the future, this one had some issues I wasn't too fond of compared to my previous Subaru vehicles, which was a 2008 Impreza 5-Speed and 2013 Outback.
    I had sold my 2013 Outback to one of my former employers. Life changed, then I had to find a new job and buy a car. Hence, why I went with the 2011 CRV, a good price and still a ways to go in the mileage realm. Fast forward a couple of years, some pretty glaring issues with it. Going from about 63,000 miles when purchased to over 120,000 by 2018, it presented some gnarly hurdles.
    The AC completely died this year after multiple clutch seizures. Came to find out Honda was dealing with bad compressors on the CRV, Accord and other vehicles from 2007-2013. When I got rid of the vehicle a month ago, it still no longer worked.
    The worst part came in the form of calipers. My mechanic had provided warning these vehicles would blow through them more than others. Boy, was he right, too. During the lifetime of ownership of my 2011 SE, I had bought 3-4 calipers. One of them was covered by the garage since one of their locations didn't install it properly.
    Otherwise, I loved the vehicle, but at 131,000 miles, the cost of repair was beginning to exceed the value of it. Luckily, the dealership gave me about $5000 for it, so I have moved onto a RAV4. However, it was a bittersweet parting from it. It was a great vehicle overall and it did its primary job extremely well. It never broke down and had anything catastrophic occur to it.
