  • In this video I diagnose why the drivers door lock unlock switch wasn’t working on a 2016 f550 super duty.
I attribute my successes to god and give him the glory.
“Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice. Let your reasonableness be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand; do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

    Nice Job! Simple systematic approach.
My 2011 F150 has the same issue. I hadn’t looked into it too much beyond seeing the Body Control module wasn’t getting the signal to unlock….. honestly hadn’t even considered a wiring issue, I just live with it because I’m too cheap to buy a new switch! Now you’re gonna make me have to actually look into it further.

I have no doubt you understand automotive electrical. I spent 32 years in this industry. The wiring diagram you used was perfect. Locating that diagram is a skill in itself. Once printed I would ask a young technician to "highlight" all that works. Pick a load, say the LED in a switch. If that load worked, then highlight that load itself. Because that load worked, then highlight its source all the way back to the battery. Also highlight its ground all the way to the 10 mm bolt that supplies the ground. Then repeat, then repeat. Soon the wiring diagram will mostly be highlighted resulting in only what is NOT WORKING! (Non-highlighted) Always highlight what works! Doing this is an absolute. It, the load, worked so it's an absolute! Never highlight what you think the issue is only highlight what works. Highlight the entire source and the entire ground for every load that works. Highlight the BCM, highlight wires, highlight splices, highlight ground wires, highlight ground bolts. After doing this a young technician can see on the printed wiring diagram what he needs to test because what is not highlighted must be tested. Where those connectors are, where those splices are is an additional skill. But just getting a young technician to locate the correct wiring diagram and highlighting what works was my first mission. Choosing what test to perform next came only after the technician proved to me, they could find the correct wiring diagram and highlight what works! Thanks for the memories.

I went to a technical high school and I took electronics. They ended the course half way through and converted it to computer repair and networking. Unfortunately over the years I lost a lot of the information because I never really used it. Your process sound like an excellent way of teaching someone. We don’t have a subscription for wiring diagrams so finding a diagram for free is pretty difficult these days, I got lucky with this one.

@@JasonTheMunicipalMechanic The company you work for should subscribe to ALL DATA wiring diagrams. No matter the manufacture / make / model / year the wiring diagrams are shown the same way and found the same way. All DATA does also offer a vehicle VIN specific 12-month subscription service. There is no way to repair an electrical issue without a wiring diagram. This is not 1970. It is 2022. Of course, buying $1,000 parts and not fixing the issue is a plan that cost more than the subscription. I know the battle you're fighting. It's not fair of management to think vehicles will be repaired without service manuals and wiring diagrams.

Excellent detective work. From what I've seen on another channel, water collects under the scuff plates. FordBossMe had to replace an entire harness on a landscaping company plow truck. Drivers were tracking in a mixture of snow, slush, and salt. As it melted it made its way under the scuff plates. Salt was caked on the wire harness and deteriorated the insulation. It was easier to replace the harness rather than repair due to the labor cost.

There was a bunch of sand in there the first time I had the cover off. I was surprised how much got under there.

Well done on a fiddly repair, at least you didn't have to stand on your head to get to it.

2015 f250 6.7 I have a problem with the driver door not locking or unlocking from the switch. It does from the key fob. The passengers door works fine with the switch and key fob. Replaced the driver door switch and still no luck. Checked fuses and currently tracing the wires on the drivers door and floor but not having any luck. It’s like it’s not getting power to the driver switch.

I would check the splice on the passenger side. That’s what was the problem with this truck.

You probably saved 100 bucks not taking the easy route and changing the switch first. So much wire and little room for it all. Thanks
