    This guy's righteous anger captures exactly how I felt about the Ford spare tire setup and all the other stupid videos and chat forums where people claim to have figured this out. Dealing with that spare today (and failing) made me wish Ford would go bankrupt. Ford created a convoluted security system to prevent the theoretical possibility of somebody stealing the spare and in doing so probably has left thousands upon thousands of truck owners stranded by the roadside wondering why they can't do something as simple as replace their flat tire with the spare. Can you imagine the towing bills people have incurred? And then when they end up somewhere in Bumblhump, Nebraska, where the mechanic doesn't have the magical set of keys, they gotta pay for a new tire while their perfectly serviceable spare remains under the truck bed.

    Thank you Sir, I did it a little different but couldn't have without your video. I pulled the tube, then wedged a 2X4 between the tire and the frame which gave me enough room to get my hand up there with a vise grip and wiggle it out.

    9/16" socket worked for me. I watched another video where the guy used a 14mm, I could not beat a 14mm onto the lock key, a softer socket might have worked but I was able to use a 9/16". I lowered the tire, removed the guide tube by twisting and pulling, used a screwdriver to knock out the lock key, replaced the guide tube and raised the tire with the jack hadle that is under the hood.

    Your lucky your spare tire was out of the way, plus I had a tow hitch on my truck and I could not get that tube out to expose that lock. I also tried the socket trick that did not work the socket got stuck at the end of the tube before ever reaching the lock I used a 20 oz claw hammer on The 3. 10 inch 3/8 drive extensions. I'm so glad I taped them together with blue tape or 1 of them would have got stuck on the socket . Now I grabbed a long 40 inch bar and a sledge hammer to beat the socket on, but no luck which later I realized it never made it to the lock, so I ended up having to cut the hoist cable above the spare tire between the bumper and tailgate. I used a home made saw I duct taped a hacksaw blade to a 3 foot long metal yard stick and at a slight angle you can easily cut that cable in 5 to 10 min of sawing back and forth the rim gets in the way some you cannot do long strokes but good enough to cut it and bam the tire fell to the ground. Be sure the saw is on the cable and not the metal part of the hoist. Now you can remove that tube easily and get to that lock and pop it off with a large set of pliers and a screwdriver and hammer bam that falls off now you can lower the hoist with the tool that's under the hood. lower it all the way down now youcan repair it with 2 u bolt clamps by looping it up and double it and clamp it down tight with 2 clamps. Be sure to put bracket on correctly so it can secure that rim along with the spring and cone washer on first then your 2 cable clamp u bolts double it so it gets a good grip on cable and make sure your spare holds air no leaks mount it on put the clamp thru the rim make sure your valve stem for air is facing down and your good to go crank that hoist back up. Or you can order a new hoist on e bay 42 bucks either way its road ready now!!!!!

      @mcconnll  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      How do you think the spare got down? The video was shot AFTER I worked out how to get the lock out of the way and I could now turn it up and down. If you do use the hoist after this I would HIGHLY recommend spraying the snot out of the cable and the hoist gears with a residual lubricant like fluid film, chain lube, anything that will stay and continue to protect against corrosion and lubricate the hoist when you next need to get that spare out of there.

    • @joecarreon4824
      @joecarreon4824 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mcconnll Hi did you cut the cable? This was not an easy job but well worth it ! Yes I sprayed and lubed the hoist it works perfect, I'm in California The truck I got was a 2002 Ford F150 Supercrew XLT. 1 owner garaged truck non smoker this thing was babied and loaded with options lift kit push bar oversize tires rims LED lights high performance driveshaft aluminum axle cover gears were upgraded to a 410 posi truck is low milage interior and bed liner and exterior paint not 1 scratch or stain or evidence of ever pulling towing or hauling anything. engine has a power chip in it trans has a shift kit runs smooth and strong 80,000 miles on truck clean car fax never wrecked its silver with tinted windows. dude I'm in heaven and it doesn't talk back like an x wife Im Ready for some trips and go down to mexico enjoy life have fun !!!!

    Bought "key" on Amazon, didn't work. Solution: remove grommet around spare tire hole, remove plastic tubing (just break it off with long pliers), next use extended ratchet 1/2" and find a socket to get a semi-tight fit around the lock, hammer the socket on and once secured lower tire. Once tire is lowered, remove the tire lowering mechanism so you can get to the tire lock; pull at the tirelock with pliers and break it loose. Voila, now you can use a regular spare kit to get your tire.
