I grew up in Oakland. It is an incredibly beautiful place with expensive parks and amazing architecture. It is full of a vibrant art and music scene and is an economic powerhouse with the port, major corporations like Kaiser and Clorox, and a hub of innovation in tech, education and healthcare. It breaks my heart to see the crime and poverty spread so far in the city. But anyone who truly knows the city understands it is still sn amazing place.
Still live in Oakland, this is a nostalgic video. I still miss that old Walmart and now that in and out is closing I no longer have a reason to go by that area:(
I lived in the Bay Area for 15 years; the only time I got robbed was in Oakland around 2010, near Jack London Square. Never went back after that and moved away a few years ago. I'm so glad I don't live in that mess of an area anymore.
I don't live in Oakland, but I have been to Jack London Square and its waterfront, and I feel that it's one of the more safer areas of the city. In fact, as of this writing, I went to Jack London Square last week & felt quite safe.
I went to that Raising Cane's about a year ago and couldn't believe how bad that area was. I've spent plenty of time in Oakland and it never seemed as bad as people made it out to be but that section was incredibly sketchy.
when i first moved to the bay i used to go to that walmart every month to get discount prescriptions because i didn't have insurance. at the time it was sketchy but fine. sad to see it decline.
Another great informative video😉👍💯 That part of Oakland has always seemed to be one of the more wild areas. But of course I don't live in Oakland and rarely go there.
Thank you! I just spent some time in the tenderloin, and I’m probably going to make a video about it. I would absolutely rather go back to the TL (and definitely will) than go back to this part of Oakland.
The case that the A's and Fisher make about, "We can't make it in Oakland," rings true, unfortunately, when seeing this. This is a dam shame. I am familiar with this area from when we attended A's games from Modesto. When coming from Sacramento, we don't see this area, not that it is any safer. Why can't politicians just get things DONE! Is it that there is so much red tape? The issue is too far gone, and everyone just has a "f**k it, it is what it is!" Man.
There's so much that is so frustrating about this. It's why I thought doing a food tour might lighten the mood a bit. It's tough not to feel some understanding of Fisher wanting out of Oakland. Especially considering he's politically on the other end of the spectrum. At the same time, investment into sports teams has helped revitalize neighborhoods in places like Detroit, and Philly. But Fisher hasn't tried to do any of that in Oakland.
Come through and check Stockton out, similar to Oakland in the sense of crime, homelessness, and some closures. Especially midtown, downtown, and south Stockton areas
Oakland is an anomaly. If you have enough money to live in the nicer parts, it can be a slice of paradise away from the city. I left SF for the Oakland hills back in 2020 and never looked back. It has everything you need and is in such convenient location distance wise to the entire Bay Area. I love me some In-N-Out, but the people who swear by In-N-Out, Whataburger and Shake Shack haven’t explored the full spectrum of what a truly great burger tastes like. I’d take a Super Duper Burger any day over those three. Keep up with the videos. I really enjoy your different perspectives on these places you visit.

In the late 1980’s and 1990’s, my sons and I went to several A’s games a year. We only only got out of the car in the parking lot or the BART station to walk game. We never stopped anywhere else in Oakland just to be on the safe side. Looks like it’s gotten much worse. Too bad a thriving business district did not develop around the Coliseum.
The notion of in n out burger being “not that good” is wild. I appreciate what you are doing for Oakland and the Bay Area but I gotta say in n out is top 5 burgers all time.

I want to get a job at the tourism department for Oakland. And my #1 goal is to post this video on the city's website and link this TH-cam video in all future e-Mail correspondence. I'll get fired, but it will be sooooo worth it.
I have lived in the flatlands of east Oakland for about 35 years. For anyone that lives in the city knows that for the most part there are decent hardworking people there. For me crime has always been a constant. Sometimes there's a spike and other times there are drops. Homeless on the other hand has increased to the point where you can't enjoy the city's parks or trails. Other cities I have visited across the country are dealing with the same problem. Maybe not to this degree but they often have the same struggle.
Mmmm Raising Cane's was solid...tried it for the first time in Miami a month ago! Good on you for venturing in this part of Oakland with what I suspect is a really nice camera, even in broad daylight!
I work in the area and I got gas at that station hella early in the morning cause I work graveyard and two random people came up to me and warned me to watch my back, it's not safe. Nothing happened, but there was a bad vibe.
I moved to the bay area for school and I've never felt more unsafe then I when was waiting for an uber not 1 block from the Oakland Police Department station, watching a guy look underneath and try the doors of every single car parked on the other side of the street, then move onto trying to open the doors and windows of every building. If I happened to be on his side of the street, I'm pretty sure the dude would've tried to rob me and my friend. We walked the other way as he slowly and methodically tried to commit crimes TOWARD the direction of the station. Not only that, but 2/3 parks that we saw on our way to check out some places to eat looked like they were taken over as encampments. I walked by the Chinese Garden Park and there was zero chance that I was going to go in there, it looked positively dystopian from across the road.
For the nearly 10 years I've lived in Oakland, I've never thought about visiting hegen-burgers 😂 When I first moved to Oakland in 2014 I thought I wanted to be buried in Oakland. With the rising crime, the influx of camper vans and homeless, and the city politics is making me rethink that decision. For the prices we pay in rent you would think this city is better ran, but it not. Oakland is being divested from and out troubling.
My job involve(d) going to the coliseum and working with the A's, and the first time they sent me there I was early and had like 10 minutes to kill so I pulled into the In-n-Out parking lot not knowing anything that goes down around there. As I am sitting in my work car looking at my phone I hear a noise and I look in my side mirror to see a dude who had just broken the window of the car next to me pulling stuff out of the back, then running to a getaway car. It was shocking how brazen it was.
I used to eat at that in n out late night after band practice. Always checking the mirrors in the car while we ate lol. Nothing ever happened luckily though.
Its kinda insane how much thing can change in Oakland. I used to walk around Edgewater all the time and never felt even the tiniest bit unsafe. Pre-pandemic it was probably the nicest area in Deep east Oakland. There are systemic issues that have cause the neighborhood to falter that needs to be addressed.
The family would go to the A's games at the Oakland Coliseum in the heydays of the early to mid 1970s, and it was a great time as a kid at a safe place. That was 50 years ago now. Sad to see this happen. Yikes!
I feel this was a good clear look into an issue with your biases spelled out. I have a reaction to your comment where you implied that raising the minimum wage caused Wally World to bow out of the city. If you have a business that relies on underpaying people then it not much of a business plan. In general it feels strange to demand cheap labor so our consumer cost is low. Not sure I am comfortable with that dynamic.
To me it wasn't implied at all, it was very plainly stated the wage hike was the reason for closing - paying their staff more would affect the Waltons' 15th Lear jet.
@3:15 if you like 5-guys fries (I do NOT, ughy!) then you won't like In-N-Out fries (I really do, well-done). Now that the Oakland Mayor has been recalled, it's an open question what will happen. Hopefully, for the better. It's sad, I used to enjoy Uptown... I've stopped going to Oakland entirely (except for attending Noir City in late January), just like I've stopped going to SF; perhaps with a new SF Mayor things can improve there too.

Oakland really is bad. I’ve lived here for years and I’m from the east bay. I’m finally leaving next year since so many of my friends have been mugged at gun point and/or threatened with one unprovoked. Six friends of mine have left in under a year. I have one friend who got robbed while pumping gas at Grand Lake too. Oakland is beautiful but it’s a goddamn mess out here and anyone who’s trying to shrug it off is simply lying to themselves cause it doesn’t fit their narrative ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
In-N-Out burgers actually are good, though. A lot of the most famous chefs and food critics in the world (e.g. Gordon Ramsay, Bobby Flay, the late Anthony Bourdain, etc.) have claimed In-N-Out as the best fast food burger (if they had to choose a fast food burger.) Mainly because the ingredients are so fresh. Usually the people who don't like In-N-Out just need something more salty, more fried, and some bacon, which is a valid preference.
I dont get the obsession with in n out burger either, a lot of hype or something, every time I come out west where there is a location I have to try to make sure nothing has changed, but I would rather just go to Jack in the Box and be satisfied, lol.
Why don’t you show the other side of Oakland too? The Oakland Hills, Montclair, Redwood Park, Temescal, Glenview, Rockridge, Piedmont, heck, Jack London Square, even the Grand Lake/Lakeshore area (although I don’t recommend that place at night). You gotta show the two sides of the coin, my man. Oakland is basically two completely different cities in one. I do admit, those neighborhoods shown are nasty. But Oakland has a lot of nice spots too, just like in any large American city. I’d say Oakland is divided. Minorities mostly live in the flatlands and Whites/Asians live on the hills in multimillion dollar houses., lol. And no American city can remotely can compete with awesome Japanese cities. Tokyo, Osaka, Yokohama, Kyoto, Sapporo, Fukuoka (which believe it or not, it’s the sister city of Oakland, lol), etc.
