    I was there at Dobbins that day. I was a member of the 116th Tac Fighter Wing, the unit flying the F-15s. We heard we lost a plane and it was the one our Wing commander was flying. We were then told that the F-16 carrying Bill was limping back, so we went out to the flight line to watch it come in. I can promise you it was a sight to behold. No one could believe that aircraft could stay in the air. It was amazing no one was killed.

      Why was Bill's ejection seat not charged? How can someone be allowed to fly in an F-16 doing combat maneuvers against another jet with no way to eject?
      Also, did the pilot of Bill's F-16 know Bill's seat was not functional?

    Misleading title: The F-15 crashed, the damage F-16 that Elliott was in landed safely. Given that ejector seat detail at the end though, if F-16 had crashed, not sure Bill would be here to talk about it. Lucky day for all involved.

    • @zacharyradford5552
      @zacharyradford5552 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Uhh it the f-16 still hit the f-15. And the definition of crash is to violently hit an obstacle or another vehicle while in a vehicle. Thus the f-16 did crash it was just able to fly back to base.

    • @scarbourgeoisie
      @scarbourgeoisie 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@zacharyradford5552 Whenever the term “crash” is used for airplanes, it’s synonymous with plane meeting ground. When planes hit each other, it’s typically identified as a collision, and in this case a mid-air collision. Hell, let’s take it one step further, since the incident revolves around a hillbilly NASCAR racer, why don’t we just use the term “wrecked”. The title could be changed to “An F-15 wrecked the F-16 that Elliott was in, and subsequently crashed - Elliott’s plane managed not to crash”. You might want to check with the NTSB on when they used the term “crash” when it comes to airplanes.

    With the way Elliot describes the damage to that jet after getting on the ground had to be a hand full. That had to be one hot pilot that landed that bird. Elliot is right when he explained seeing a lot of things in his life but looking up and seeing that jet above his canopy was something way beyond his prior experiences. When I was in the USAF We used to fly completely tucked under the center line of a wingman’s jet following his maneuvers and switch positions to do the same. The top of the canopy was only a couple of feet from the belly of the jet it was wild.

    Sounds like the pilot forgot to say the pilot's prayer before he took off with Bill...: "Dear lord,bless these pistons and please don't let me screw up." Yes it even applies to jets.....It's the thought/idea that counts

      I flew in the USAF for 5 years... and I never heard that before. There IS a pilot's prayer... but that's sure not it.

    I’d have to tell the CO that either I go right back up on another F-16, WITH a charged ejector seat of course, or ‘Why I just don’t know what I might say under the utter interrogation I’m going to endure by the media.’ There’s NO way I could let a bada** experience like that end by going sideways. I’d want it to end on a good note.
    But respect to that Falcon pilot. That had to be a wrestling match trying to bring her home relatively safely. 👍🏼

      Already drove Fords as Gramps Henry's next door neighbor & 1st apprentice. He was 1st to drive Henry's 2nd racecar & FMC Unit #1, both as Henry trotted alongside admiring their handiwork! We've driven Fords since 1901 plus Gramps, Dad, & both Henrys toured Detroit area in 3-Motor model 3-5-28 Gramps' B-Day! It really flew!

    I looked it up, it turns out that they later fixed the f-16 that Bill was flying in and returned it to service. Then 4 years later in 1991 it crashed in Utah killing both pilots.

    Back in Bill's hey day, I attended 13 NASCAR races a year. We'd do Daytona, then Richmond, Rockingham, North Wilksboro, Charlotte, Darlington, Talladega, Pocono, and Wilmington and a repeat of the spring season, though it was now summer and late fall. In field camping all the way, except for short tracks.
    Racing became too corporate, the France family got greedy IMO, and we as a group stopped going.
    Today's drivers don't have the personality as the 1980-1990's drivers did.
    Now with NASCAR becoming political, stick a fork in them, they're done, along with the NBA, NFL and MLB.

    Bill had a great shot at the Cup Championship in 87, but it wasn't to be, must of used up all his good luck in this F-16 incident 😉
    I remember my Father had a good friend that he worked with & his friend was a huge Elliott fan, even had a Thunderbird painted up to mirror Bill's Coors Cup car, #9 on it & everything! It was he that told Pop & I ( couple 2-3 day's later ) about this F-16 thing & I recall him saying "no serious injury, so it's all good" to which my Father replied "All good my ass, what about those damn jet plane's, WE PAYED FOR THEM you know!!" 😡 LOL!
    My Dad was seriously old-school bout such shenanigans, as far as he was concerned Bill Elliott, nor any other civilian had any business being up there foolin around in one of his "America tax payer's" aircraft! 😆👍 RIP Pop, I sure do miss ya 🙏 ✝️
