  • From the outside looking in during the 1987 and '88 Winston Cup seasons, things were awesome down in Dawsonville, Georgia in the Melling Racing shops.
Bill Elliott won the 1987 Daytona 500.
He set a NASCAR qualifying record at Talladega that will never be topped.
In 1988, the team made it to the top of the mountain and won the Winston Cup championship.
Still, according to Dan Elliott, there was a tug-of-war taking place between separate factions of the organization back at the shop This is his story.

Great job as always Rick! I remember in 1987 Bill Jr. telling the boys “Not to stink up his shows”

I learned how crooked. NASCAR and the Frances politics were ....something the older drivers and teams already knew

It's weird how people want to go back to that era like there were no problems

It may have been, “unfair” and or “biased” but the participants were more human and definitely, colorful !

I sat on the back stretch at Degs that day. After Elliot went 2 laps down he would come around BY HIMSELF with no drafting help & it looked like he was on a long Sunday drive. If Im not mistaken he won with a 10 second lead on the 2nd place car Yarbrough

The biggest problem that I saw with the Elliott team was that they weren't ready to handle the success they had. They also had their own way of doing things that many were just ready to pounce on. Bill mellowed a bit through the years but Ernie and Dan kept everything as much as possible away from prying eyes. It's not hard to see the Bill Elliott snippiness in his son Chase, when things don't go as planned.

I saw a interview with Bob Glidden, he said he did head work for them on the 85 car. If you who Bob was, he knew how to make the Cleveland's run like a bat out of hell.

That was an absurd ruling by NASCAR! Thankfully it came early in the race and Bill was able to overcome it!
