      You're absolutely correct, I also never missed a Race weekend for the Winston Cup. The Busch Grand National & then even the The Craftsman Truck series came about. The Old "VCR Tapes recorded many of races. Then I got really lucky after moving from western New York down to West Palm Beach, Fl. In June of 1990. I got a job running Heavy Wrecker, Lowboy & Specialized Extended drop with added StingerTails that were Remotely Controlled rear steer. Anyways the company that they bought there Wrecker Units From (Miller Industries) Could get tickets to any Nascar track with Full Vip, true PIT PASSES All For Free. That wasn't even the Best Part Of The Hookup. The Best Being Able To Actually Work The Races Operating A Wrecker!!!!
      All I Had To Do Was Ask Mike For The # of tickets I needed, for what race & If I was going Operate a Rollback Wrecker for the weekend & id have them within a few days. This is before Internet & all of the Electronic stuff of today. Thanks to MI inc. I was able to go to every track east of the Mississippi. I worked for the company in West Palm from 1990-1999. I was working The race when Earnhardt Sr. & Ernie Irvan Crashed & the deck lid flew off the #28 Texaco Havoline Ford up into the grandstands. That was when Sr. Got out of the Ambulance, told the guy who was running another Rollback to get the hell out of the car. He finished that race somehow. Was the wrecker driver who Towed The #20 Home Depot Car Crashed By Sliced Bread At Dover when he rolled it a bunch of times. Man there was so many BC I think over the 9 yrs or so that I worked probably 2-5 races a year but attended upwards to 12-15 maybe even upwards to 20 a year. I also have so many autographed stuff. I Had other Nascar items that I paid good $ for or that my Exwife bought. Now I Could Careless if I watch or even just listen to MRN's or PRN's Radio call of them races. Now I'll watch if It's a good track that puts on great racing but to watch every weekend on a damn 1.5 mile or even the 2 mile tracks is just boring AF. then they put the playoffs in & changed the points system to what they have now & the stages which are dumb as well. Then you get the short races in the Trucks & Xfinity series that when the stage ends & they throw the yellow flag & run 5,6 heck IVE counted up to 8 laps under yellow at the end of a stage until the throw the green again for next stage. Well if the race is 150-200 laps/miles & add in those yellows without any other reasons for them to throw the yellow caution flag & it's a lot of laps that isn't being run competitively. They Should Throw the yellow & let or make everyone put for fuel/tires & didn't count those laps under yellow it be better I think. Plus the 5 minute pit road clock is bs also. NASCAR better do something BC I know lots of folks that pay no attention to the sport anymore. Now the wanna make the series Worse by making the next gen 2022 cars built mostly made by outside vendors & the 3 auto makers in the series so that the dumber crew chiefs & whatnot are on a equal playing field. Might well bring back the cars they Ran for The "IROC" series. They don't like crew chiefs like Andy Petree, Jeff Hammonds & Chad Knuas Who Where All Great crew chiefs who could think outside of the box. There's nothing STOCK in these cars & trucks. If they wanna build the cars so all are equal, THE MIGHT AS WELL JUST SAY THE HELL WITH IT & GOTO ALL IRACING OR E RACING. LOL. TAKING so much away from teams so that the slow cars & teams are able to run up front. Not going to happen though bc alot of the drivers crash each race & or are always in the tail end laps down. Hell you & I could go take a driving experience sessions & then strap into say jj yeleys or some of these other drivers that always are in say like 25 place on back & we could do just as good if not better. At least I know I sure the hell could. You gotta have the balls to sometimes Flatfoot the bitch, Drive It Super Deep Into The Turn, stick the Nose & Bumper in Spot That Maybe is only there for a slut second. I believe that is a difference maker. It's like they know they suck, the car sucks so why try to do any of that & risk crashing & getting Hurt. When they can run 35th & go home with hood purse winnings & whatever else they get paid for endorsements & the team pays driver depending on the contract they have between them. I'd get sick of running in the back race after race. I'm telling you all that I bet out of everyone who's seen this posts & have commented that there's a few of us who if giving some time, could do just as good if not way better then some of these drivers. If any of you or if I had $150K to $250K to blow, we could get in a Camping World Truck or a Xfinity Car for a few races. Just like the Great North East Modified Shoe of Ryan Preece did with JGR in the xfinity series a few years ago. Bought his own ride BC of having sponsors & or himself had X amount of $ that he had to bring to team for funding. He chose JGR & a very limited HANDFUL of Races over a full season with a shitty team. It worked out for him. You can't tell me that there's only 40+ drivers in the states who are capable of wheelin a race car around. It's not like being a Nfl starting QB. Where all of the 32 football teams don't have a ghy who can play that position hood or great. It's racing for Christ Saks.

      Race was the boss then and sponsors wanted to tag along. At some point it flipped when to much money got involved and the sponsors started dictating what’s said etc and NASCAR got on its knees as well as the drivers. But the ol movie six pack sums it up when a man could tow his car with and RV to all the races and give it a shot. Now you gotta be a multimillionaire. Maybe it’s days of thunders fault…. But Earnhardt was def the Dam holding back the PC flood. I think he had alot of say back then and when those stars faded out all the newbies just follow orderers.

    In Bill Elliott's autobiography. It mentions where he and Harry Melling argued with NASCAR over the roof height rule change, raising the Fords a half inch and lowering the GMs a half inch. And yet Bill's cars were running the original ride height for GMs because the teardrop Thunderbird had enough down force that they had to raise the car to sit at the preferred height at speed and keep the fenders off the tires.

      The playoff format is dumb. It shouldn't be counted the same as the real champions from seasons prior to the chase bs. Nascar should go back and re score the last 15 years by the previous scoring system. If you change the points system, how can you compare past champions to current ones? Pushed a lot of fans that built the sports popularity away.

  • @efan2012

    The ironic part to me in how Darrell won the title that year was he did it being being so against how he was in 81 and 82.. in both those years he was like Bill but maybe a little more dominant as he won a ton of races especially at the short tracks. To win the title in 1985 he had to do the complete opposite and focused on those high finishes and not wins. Still blows my mind how he managed to switch it up so dramatically. Bill in contrast won the big deal races in 1985 but not many short tracks.. when they were both in their primes DW and Bill were to of the greats at both short tracks for DW and Big ones for Bill.
    It still bums me out Bill only had 1 title, should had 2 at least.

      @jasonwiggins6137 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah. It's exactly the same. Earnhardt won two races in 2000. What a valid comparison. Earnhardt's true talent was playing the no DNF game. 2000 was a classic example of that. Elliott dominated 1985 but came up short. Rusty won 18 races over a two year period but lost both championships to Dale. The champion isn't always the most dominate car, driver, and team.

Now we run the daytona 200, stop, give everyone a chance to catch up, then go another hour or so and give another chance to catch up. 500 mile races should just run wire to wire. After that win at Dega - NASCAR and all the GM teams were pissed Rule changes weekly to slow down the 9 car the rest of the way. But the big issue for Bill was DNFs late in 1985 - team just ran out of gas and luck.

    I made a really nice model of Million $ Bill’s #9 Dodge with Evernham.
    Bill’s last yr. I built it and did a good job too I mite say. 😏
    Love that thing because I did it myself instead of buying a diecast but I’d much rather have this Coors car or his Budweiser car.

    I recall Bill and Ernie saying Inexperience was the biggest reason they lost the championship in 85. They had stupid stuff fail, Batch of bad parts, bolts...when it happened more than once they should've went a different direction with parts.....Quote from Bill himself. He really should have 3 championships. 85-88-92. Just wasn't meant to be. NASCAR making them boys tear the car down every week in 85-86 and 87 didn't help either. Trying to find something wrong on it. When you have less than 20 people on the whole crew including engine guys and everything, and they're already working 14 plus hour days. That kind of puts even more stress on you, having to put your race car back together over and over while getting ready for the next weekend. They should've left them alone and let them race, but nooooo people like "Jaws" ran their mouths, chevy was crying. No telling what they could've done if NASCAR would've left them alone. Ole France Jr...."You're not gonna stink up my show". Well being a Bill Elliott fan, it smelled pretty good to me. Ernie was sharp on engines as well. Still is.

      No matter what people are just going to complain sometimes, people say the playoffs are awful because the guy who has seasons like Bill Elliott in 85 lost out but whenever this happened back then it's ok. No matter what format is made the champion earned it and deserves it whether they light the season on fire or sneak their way into it

    • @TheIceberg

The racing today with the PC correctness and all this going on I just lost interest. Back then I knew every driver every car every crew chief every race. Listen to qualifying on Thursdays and Fridays getting in on the race pools love the race pools. They stole NASCAR .
