    Is 1440p A Waste? - 1080p vs 1440p Monitors
Yes it’s true 1080p has been the preferred resolution for professional gamers for a long time, but are they just clowns, or is there a good reason to stick to 1080p for competitive gaming in 2023.
Now this video idea came to me like a fever dream when I saw a popular streamer giving his thoughts on the idea.
But is he right, well to find out first we need to understand the real difference between 1080p and 1440p
So 1080p or 1920x1080 has a total pixel count of 2,073,600 whereas 1440p or 2560x1440 has a total pixel count of 3,686,400 pixels.
That's an enormous nearly 78% increase in resolution, which let me tell you looks much much more clear in person. This also means that targets at a distance and heck even up close will be far more detailed theoretically allowing you to potentially track and recognize targets with greater accuracy and on a personal note I get less eye fatigue when the image is clearer as well.
Now many people will say that 1440p is a waste for competitive gaming because it's much harder to run, the displays tend to have lower refresh rates, and I’ve heard some say that the PPI of 1080p on something like 24” is good enough and there isn’t much benefit to moving to a higher resolution.
That last point is just false and I vehemently disagree with the PPI argument as sure at some point a screen is so small that you can’t tell the difference, but that's not even the case on 5” phone screens let alone 24” monitors. The visual difference between 1440p and 1080p at 24 and 27” is MASSIVE and no matter what size the screen is 1440p will always have roughly 78% higher detail making PPI a metric you should mostly ignore.
And yes 1440p is harder to run, but most graphics cards today can run any game at 1440p low settings at very acceptable frame rates and the harder games to run tend to have options like DLSS or FSR to help if you can’t quite get the framerate you want, plus with now 360Hz 1440p monitors becoming available with very diminishing returns in response and input lag already happening at 240Hz especially considering LCD struggles to take advantage of framerates of 360Hz and beyond in terms of motion clarity I don’t see any reason to choose a 1080p monitor over 1440p or heck even 4K in 2023 unless the monitor and equipment to run it is just too expensive, which is a legitimate argument.
For example at 1080p a 360Hz monitor may cost you $400 and a $250 RX 7600 may be enough depending on the games you run for a total cost of $650.
However a 360Hz 1440p Monitor may cost $900 and require a $500 7800 XT to run it for a total cost of $1,400 making it far harder for many to justify purchasing, but realistically guys I think 240Hz is the sweet spot to you may be able to get away with a cheaper graphics card as well as a MUCH less expensive $450 monitor which would probably put you at a total cost of around $900 which while more expensive is FAR more reasonable.
So whether or not you can justify the extra expense is up to you, but the massive increase in clarity is certainly worth it in my opinion, and spending the same for higher refresh rate 1080p monitors to get either very very diminishing or even no returns in terms of motion clarity and system latency is certainly not.

In many situations 1080p makes a game more cpu bound using 1440p often forces the GPU to take over the load for what it’s good for. I play RTX 3060 on a 1440p 32 inches monitor. Especially when you can use DLSS it starts to make sense

@@MrMOGHammer Nothing makes much sense in regards to your choice to play on a 1440p 32" monitor. Learn about "ppi" (pixel density). Your monitor has a ppi of 93, the same as 1080p 24" panels. Bigger is not always better. 1440p at 27" has a ppi of 108. Of course you have a greater resolution compared to 1080p but the bigger the screen, the bigger will the individual pixels be and you lose clarity, sharpness and detail. It also forces you to sit further away for it to become retina.

Playing on 1440p at good frame rates & good image quality require high end costlier gpus and high end processors. If you can afford RTX xx70 and above, i7 or Ryzen 7 and above, then go for 1440p. If anything below, then play at 1080p with max graphic settings on budget gpus like RTX xx60 with i5 newer generations or i7 older generations.

Competitive gaming is different than recreational. 1080p is the perfect middle ground and what a lot of people play on/are used to. Back in the day people used to play Counterstrike on 4:3 720p settings and when it was migrated to CSGO, a lot of older competitive gamers still preferred the smaller resolution with slower mouse speeds. I do not think one is inherently better than the other I truly believe it’s personal preference. But objectively speaking the less pointless information your eyes have to comb through the faster you get on target. The brain is very adaptable however, and the new generation will be very accustomed to 1080p/1440p gaming.

But I do think now that our graphics cards are so much more powerful, professional players should consider high resolution monitors. It kinda dawned on me the other day perhaps a reason so many csgo and fps pros play so close to their monitor is because they play at low resolutions so having the the monitor in their face helps them make out important details while playing. I’ve started to thinking higher resolution might help with that issue and promote better/healthier habits and posture for competitive gamers.

Depending on the game and your rig, 1080 will allow for higher fps so in tandam with a high refresh screen will look nice and smooth. On the other hand 1440 will look sharper but you may have to lower the settings to keep the fps high enough to seem as smooth. Theres a sweet spot you need to experiment and find depending on your hardware. generally the pixels per inch on a smaller screen 1080 will still look fine. But in a 60" telly your gonna see them jaggys so youll want a higher res to increase the pixel per inch count. This is all generalisation though. Again, experiment. Honestly the bigger issue is oled over led. The vastly superior colour gamet, pixel response times and the blacks, oh lord have mercey the blacks on oleds will have a vastly greater impact on your viewing pleasure then resolution. Hell some games look great at 720 on most monitor size screens. Juggle and experiment kids, juggle and experiment.

1080p above 1440p for me. Here's why (just to help people)
    1) That expensive part really does it for me. Even IF you find cheap monitors/graphics cards, it'll be expensive enough and "once" you have 1440p, there is NO TURNING BACK! So expect expensive money wasting for ever...
    2) Not to mention the games. Yes competive is 1 part of the gaming community, but people who are enjoying their single player experience, will have a greater time playing at 1080p. They would technically experience it even better with 1440p, however... This will "yet again" come at a very expensive experience, cause if you see starfield, you won't be able to get 60fps so easaly...
    3) IPS... If you want a good monitor, people will need to go IPS which is expensive. VA is cheaper but too dark.
    4) The vast majority still plays on 1080p as mentioned by yourself, and no we are not idiots xD. There are simply those of us who don't have money...
So a good IPS 1080p144hz is still the better choice here...
Unless it's 1080p360hz, and you want 300fps, yea, those are expensive and then by all means, it's better to go 1440p.

I used to have a 3.5 inch smartphone with a 480p display. I was like almost like 4-5 inches away from it sometimes and I couldn't care less about how clear the pixels are. Color accuracy and viewing angles are WAY more important as far as clarity goes. I have a 19.5 ish 1600 x 900 old ips display and I actually prefer it to some modern 1080p 21 inch ones cause it has really good colors. I am not a professional gamer but even if I could run 4k 120 in games I would still prefer even a 1080p 240 let alone 360hz.
I personally want a 1080p display cause no game has scaling issues at that resolution. I can't really tell the difference between 1080p or heck 900p to a 1440p panel
Also I agree that upscaling helps a lot with performance but guys, don't forget you can just play some of the older games on your backlog until new and faster gpus or just faster used ones come at a normal price so then you can play the then old game with ease...

For example, instead of TN, buy IPS or WOLFED and run games with high graphics settings. The user is encouraged to change the monitor to 2K in order to then change the hardware of his properly working computer, which would subsequently force him to buy more expensive hardware and bring more profit to the manufacturer? talking bollox. coming from someone who owns a 4k tv and 4k player and a physical collection, there is no quality difference in a 50 inch 1080p and 4k in the detail. until you reach insane sizes, resolution is unnoticeable. Most cinemas for nearly 20 years now have been using digital 2k resolution and you probably didn't even notice it wasn't film or 4k digital and that's a 40foot width.

1080p sucks, 4K good monitors with equivalent features and response time will cost 2x more than 1440p, or atleast is what i'm facing on my country, so 1440p is the way to go, but yeah, if the cost difference was not so big, i would go to 4K.

@@autistukral It's the most common resolution for 27" monitors, and I actually prefer it, as I don't need to use scaling (windows or browser). It's also good for gaming imho (mainly for framerate).
I also want to use 27" 1080p oleds at some point on my sim racing triple monitor rig.
Driving 3x 1440p is pretty hard (at a high enough framerate), where as 3x 1080p is the sweetspot imho.

One aspect you didn't mention is FOV. You can fit 1080p better into your FOV. More of the screen will be near the center of the vision, which means less movement is likely to go unnoticed. This is why I believe 4K will never be competitive. To properly see 4K, you need to sit so close to the screen that you actually need to tilt your head to see the periphery. This is great for immersion but not so great for competitive gaming. I believe 1080p is the superior format for competitive as a result. 2K is great for the average gamer who wants decent immersion and competitive performance. 4K is for whales who just want to get lost in their screen.
I speak as a person who owns 2k and knows the proper distance to sit from it. My screen fills my glasses and that's perfect for me. I doubt I will ever upgrade to 4K.
