I recently got my hands on the first high refresh rate monitor I have ever used and it got me thinking "Can a noob tell the difference between a 144Hz and 60Hz PC gaming"
    Noob T-shirt available from dawiddoesmerch.com/collection...
To answer this question I enlisted Anna (PC gaming noob who is also a girl) so that we could do some tests.
If you are interested in the CPU cooler in this video, check it out here: • Futuristic looking The...
If you are impressed with the results you can buy a high refresh rate monitor here (Amazon Affiliate):
Acer VG271P (Monitor we used): amzn.to/2Fvy5Ua
I would also recommend a VESA mount for this monitor (A better stand): amzn.to/2XxOfqr
If you have a bigger budget for a 1440P High refresh rate monitor: amzn.to/2X2FjtL
Some High refresh rate Ultrawide action: amzn.to/2KBUi7j
G-sync alternative for you guys with an Nvidia GPU: amzn.to/2Xz5UOo
RTX 2060 in this video: amzn.to/2X6Pk93I
f you get a 1440P high refresh rate get this graphics card: amzn.to/2Nnahbk
Or if you are a complete baller: amzn.to/2RBXbpl

Its less visual but the action response time and snappyness of movement is what people who can't see it visually will almost 100% notice. Even if you can't tell visually its a higher refresh rate, you'll know based purely on how it feels.

@@DawidDoesTechStuff I'd be curious too to see what the test results are with it deactivated. You had more experience and knew what the look to for, where as Anna got about half of them right in her test and then got to them all right after she figured out what to look for, and it wasn't until she figured out what to look for that she noticed any difference.
I think another good test of this would be to get several players together for some pvp, and each round, without their knowledge, change their refresh rates to see 2 things. One, can they tell the difference. And more importantly, does it actually affect game play. I think the latter being the bigger issue for people with refresh rates. with a fair amount of tests and looking at each players average scores playing at the higher refresh rate vs the lower you could see if the fresh rate actually had an effect on they're ability to play.

Now I feel like I could never go back to playing below 60FPS and yet my siblings are happily enjoying playing games at 45FPS on console while I'm here researching 144hz :(

My old PC struggled to get over 40 FPS in the games I played and when it was fewer than that, I definitely felt a difference. 40 FPS still felt a bit sluggish. When I upgraded it and got 60 FPS (couldn't exceed that due to my monitor) it felt SO SMOOTH. I couldn't believe that more than that feels better because it seemed perfect. Recently, I upgraded to a 165hz monitor and I instantly felt the difference. In my mind, it's worth it. Going back to 60 FPS isn't as bad as going from 60 to 30, but it does feel a bit choppy. If you asked me back then, I would say that when it comes to online FPS games, then 40 would be the minimum, but now I would say it's 60. 60 is well playable, but 100+ is definitely better. Even things like scrolling down a webpage or moving windows around feel much smoother.

But a lot of people actually do feel this way. People are so used to having 24fps on television and film, that when they see them in 60fps, it can look very weird. With certain single player games like Uncharted, that are almost like a film in a way, some people actually prefer 30fps since it feels like it adds more weight and makes it more like the experience they know. It really does make the experience more cinematic. I'm not saying that 30 is better than 60, just that it's not "nonsense".
Nowadays lot of people just jump on the hypetrain and simply think higher = better and disregard any disagreement, or reasoning that lower could actually be better.

    • @philswift1252
      @philswift1252 4 ปีที่แล้ว +45

Twyzan nobody has ever played uncharted at 60 FPS so they wouldn’t know. Take a poll among pc gamers as to whether they would prefer higher or lower refresh rates, I guarantee 95% of them would say they prefer higher frame rates. There’s no point asking console gamers because they don’t have a choice and most probably don’t even know there’s a difference. 24 FPS (and it’s 30fps in tv) in film is not a fair comparison as there is a substantial amount of motion blur, not to mention the viewer isn’t directly interacting with the image.

I have seen a couple comments where people say that the FRAPs counter in the top right of the screen clearly gives away the frame rate which ruins the test.
The FRAPS counter is there to show that the game was running at the same FPS for all the tests and that the only variable was the refresh rate that the monitor was set to, like I showed in the start of the video.
On a second note, people have been pointing out that I use the term "double blind test" incorrectly. This doesn't effect the test results, I just used the term incorrectly. What we did in this video was technically a single blind test, because the tester knew the settings.
Thank you very much for watching this video. If you enjoyed the video please subscribe and check out some of the other videos on my channel.

Simplest of tests (and best way to show the 'actual' difference):
    1. open any window/folder e.g. explorer window to around 1/2 of screen
    2. Left click and hold top bar...
    3. Now move window around screen, slow to fast. Do this on 60 and 144Hz modes. Pay particular attention to the window edges and text - smooth movement, readable text or not?)
    Results:
    1. If you notice the 144Hz screen to be much more smooth - you passed.
    2. If you didn't see any difference - repeat the test, this time opening your eyes.
In games, if the fps is close to 60 then you will NOT be getting the 'visual' smoothing benefit. Your game fps NEEDs to be as close to the monitors "144" refresh rate value for maximum high refresh rate benefit.
The effect is the same as panning a video camera around a scene at 60fps, then at e.g. 120fps - once you play both back you'll instantly(!!) see the higher fps video to be much more smooth and detailed. Same thing with a camera shutter speed when photographing a moving car - slow shutter = blurry, fast shutter = sharp image. An object flying across a game scene will look it's sharpest if the positional updates per second match the game engine, and also match the monitor refresh rate. Scale this up to Doom and you have the same thing.

quick question; did you adjust the overdrive when you switched refresh rates? the gtg on this panel can't always keep up with the refresh rate on this monitor regardless (manufacturer's specs are actually useless) so if you use a monitor with faster, variable overdrive then it might be more obvious. Without overdrive, it's smoother at 144Hz, but it smears. The overall clarity is better, but not by as much as it could be.

The difference is massive. I remember when I got my 144Hz monitor and when I plugged it in I decided to load a map in CS and see how it feels and to be fair I saw the difference and I liked it a lot but I was kind of expecting something more and was thinking if that was worth the money. A few hours have passed and from running around on an empty map I played a few matches(and not to brag but I am pretty good at CS and have a very twitchy way of aiming). OH BOI the aiming is just so much better. The movements are very smooth and switching to 60Hz feels like you actually see less of the animations that happen on screen(which you actually do see less as less frames are displayed). 144Hz allows for faster reaction as you simply see more and at least I feel like I can be more precise with my aim, probably since I see more frames and have to do less adjustments. But I don't know if my dad would see the difference. He plays games but he's a filthy casual and he plays Battlefield V in about 20fps and says it's fine whereas I cried inside just moving the mouse around.
In conclusion, someone who is a gamer, not a casual but not necessarily a pro either, will notice the difference right away. I do feel however, that the change is the most noticeable in FPS games(and maybe racing games but I only have 1 so it's hard to say but fast reactions are also present in those)

I know it's almost a year later, but I just upgraded my 2x ASUS 60 hz 1080p monitors for 2x ACER 144 hz 1080p monitors and the difference is massive. Even in Windows it's just nice how smooth the mouse movements are and in video games, its awesome.
I use an ACER laptop for work and it has a 60hz panel and it is very noticeable after just a week of the new monitors. Still totally usable, but such a nice upgrade to get and as Dawid said, if they're still 1080p panels that you get at 144 hz, it's very doable to get higher frame rates.

The other main difference apart from gaming and graphics to tell whether your monitor is 60Hz vs 144Hz, comes from scrolling documents or webpages. Generally if you have a 144Hz monitor, scrolling will be a LOT smoother. If it's a 60Hz, scrolling will seem to jitter if that makes sense. Take the new iPad Pro for example (the 2022 model). While it isn't 144Hz, it can go as high as 120Hz, which is INFINITELY better. You can definitely tell when scrolling.

I think the difference is more in the feel than how it looks. Higher hz means lower latency. At 60hz you are just used to controlling it with the higher latency, learnimg to compensate for it through experience. The higher hz allows you to bypass the mental hoops you go through subconsciously to control the game.

@khalilcruz5816 From 60 to 120 yes you'll see a big difference. I'm on 360hz on pc. Difference from 144 to 240 and 360 is less but still better. What happens is your monitor always refreshes at the same interval. More fps means more chance one of those frames will land closer to the monitor's refresh interval, leading to lower latency.

My OCD gets triggered when he talks about these being "double blind" tests. They're just "blind" (i.e. "single blind").
For it to be a proper double blind test, the person administering the test has to be blind to the test setup, so Dawid has to be blind to the refresh rate when administering the test to Anna (That's why it's called "double blind").
Usually a third person is involved to administer the test, but it's not hard to do without a third person actually.. They could have a script change the refresh to a random one of the two before each test, and record it (so that it can be cross referenced later).
This has been your daily dose on testing methodologies 😉

I noticed there were a few drops into the 130's when testing at 144hz, its an interesting confound, frame drops can possibly make the experience worse, For example a game will feel better at a constant 120 than at going up and down all between 120 and 144... I wouldn't do this in a game like counterstrike or rocket league, but in a singleplayer game I would definitely consider locking the framerate as high as it can hold sustainably for the best experience. Sometime might not be 144 or 120 sometimes its 110 or 90, generally I'll adjust settings down before I settle on sub 100 framerate, but in certain titles a locked 100 isn't bad if it means higher settings, really depends on the nature of the game, if its competitive or atmospheric.
