- I have a 2020 Tesla Model Y so I felt it would be good to do a video pointing out the differences between mine and the 2021 model. There are many differences but not enough for me to want to buy the new version. We also discuss the difference between a Model 3 and Y from an owners perspective. I have the standard range 2021 model Y. It is a mixture of features of the 2020 and 2021 model. Has premium interior, older center console and double pane windows. Had the ghost sound in reverse. This is done on purpose for pedestrians

5 dB difference is actually significant. Remember, dB uses logarithmic scale. So if you are getting 5 dB noise reduction, that means it’s more than double the noise reduction. 3 dB = double the magnitude
The reversing tone is amazing! Would you rather the old 'beep' 'beep' beep'?

With regards to the paint potentially mismatching between the bumpers and the body panels: The exterior pieces are typically painted before assembly while off the body. This is so they can get all of the nooks and crannies painted and get paint to protect against rust in the places you can't see. The bumpers MAY be coming from the supplier pre-painted. Even if they are painted at the assembly plant, different materials can take paint differently. It's one of the toughest things to "get right". Getting the finishes on everything to be consistent is an area where a new car company/model/plant can take awhile. Getting all of the little details right is really hard.

I noticed that the temperature sensor under the screen appears different as well. I know/saw this because I had to remove my screen to install my swivel mount for it. So nice! It's also 1.6" lower than factory, so you can see the whole windshield and dashboard. Great upgrade 👍

I am four days into my 2021 Model Y LR.
The reverse sound is there so pedestrians know it's coming. The speaker is on the outside.
LOVE the disc golf display on the garage wall!!! Also, nice cart setup :)
I’m indifferent on the new console. I do like the upgraded stitching you pointed out on the side panel though.

I have a 2020 Model Y Performance made in September. It has that reverse “ghost” noise too. We call is the UFO. U get use to it.
Ya I thought they all had that. My moms 2020 model 3 has it and I don't even know if my 2018 model 3 has it. I think it sounds kind of cool tho. And it's only in reverse so who cares

My 2013 Leaf has a reverse "beeping" noise and after a while you don't even pay attention to it.
I'm finally replacing it with a Model Y LR soon, just waiting for the new headlights and center console to become standard on all new builds. I think I've still seen a few new Model Y's that still have the old headlights/center console
Just did a Model Y test drive. It was not the performance version and they did not have the $2000 boost and it was still phenomenal. 60 - 80 felt instantaneous ! I am used to a Volt which I have been happy with but the Tesla was crazy fun.
The build quality is getting much better, that is great news! Can't wait to get mine, still deciding on which color.

@@johnnybravo5962 I installed the reverse beeper on my 3 personal Ram trucks. It has saved us many times. People are stupid. All will not see a huge 4X4 backing up

I have seen updated Model Y interiors where the center white (or in case of a black interior center wood) line laps over to the doors. I wish Gary’s and other new ones had that too. They look really slick to me. Congratulations to Gary and kudos for lending his car for a quick review.
I believe that's only in the overseas versions, at least for now.
Wish you would have shown it with the back seats up, as well as folded down... but thanks for the great videos... very helpful for my first Tesla purchase.

Hey guys thank you so much for this review. I was wondering about the build quality on the newer models. I believe the ghost noise when backing up is to warn the pedestrian that the car is backing up since EVs don't make noise.

I have a 2020 Model Y from Sep 2020 and it also has that same sound while reversing, so I don't think it's exclusive to just 2021 models. The first month or so I absolutely hated the sound and kept trying to find ways to get rid of it. However after awhile it starts growing on you and truly adds to that "spaceship" experience. Plus backing out of a parking lot, everyone is always staring wondering wtf is going hahaha. Only thing I really wish I got the Y was the heated steering wheel. Here in Toronto, winters can get cold and that was one thing I really wanted. My friend recently got the 2021 Y and I didn't notice a big difference with the double panned windows in terms of noise. But then again, I'm always playing music anyways so maybe that's why. Great video as always!
Correct, the changes actually started in late 2020.
Interesting video. I got a Early Feb 2021 Model Y build and it is a mix of 2. I got the piano black interior, but heated steering wheel with the metal rollers. Also got the dual pane glass as well as the 2 nozzles on the wipers. I guess I got the one that was semi transitioning.
I’d like to have heard a little more from Gary; about the feeling, coming from a three.

I took delivery on 2020 December, back up sound was already build in and yes it is for outside, the glass also changed too back then.

My 2019 Model 3 Dual Motor also makes that strange noise while in reverse. You'll get use to it plus it alerts pedestrians nearby that you are backing up : )
Can you two do another video showing the lights in the night or in a dark parking deck? You said the newer Model Y has a matrix light now. Show us comparison please.

The ghost sound is a federal safety mandate. Plays through a small speaker under the car. You can disconnect or remove it to get it to stop.
Wouldn’t you be breaking the law by removing it?
@@mikerzisu9508 I think it’s required for manufacturers but not sure if consumers will get into trouble for removing it. They only activate at slower speeds anyways. I personally wouldn’t remove it.
@@thiswillnotendwell4402 I wouldn’t either. It is probably similar to messing with the seatbelt beep notifications, there by law and probably illegal to remove.

Hello and thanks for the great videos; we drove and placed an order for a model Y today. My primary car is an 2016 E class (Mercedes-Benz) and surprised that autopilot was only as good as the Distronic in the benz again was just a 15 minute drive. Maybe the Tesla wasn't set up or something, but we are looking forward to our new car and again appreciate the content.

I have standard range RWD model y. I got the 2021 wipers, double pane glass, and seat control buttons. But I got the glossy buttons and flip version of the center console. I also had the storage tray.
The noise when you back is mean to warn pedestrians as you backing up, Safety feature

Quality is improving? I just rejected my March build on Tuesday due to a major paint defect on the drivers door. The upper rear hatch gaps were terrible as well. 1/16” on the passenger side, a healthy 1/4” on the drivers side. I am holding off on ordering another one until June. Keeping my fingers crossed on the second one for better fit and finish🤞
I believe the new '21 has auto dimming mirrors and rumored to have heated ones too. My '21 was delivered only with the new double pane glass

I got my MY in February but it has the tray. I don't mind the backout noise but probably because I don't notice it as much anymore. Thanks for showing the differences, I have the old console (I like it). I might cover it later on so it does not scratch.

Heated steering wheels is coming just in time! I don't actually see it on the Canadian Tesla website yet but I'll definitely wait until it appears before ordering this summer.

My 2019 Honda Insight also has the music note when going in reverse. I think most Hybrids and EVs are doing that now

That sound is the PWS (Pedestrian Warning System) and it's an external speaker that was introduced in 2019 if I remember correctly. But, for some reason it's not been included on all cars since then.
Picked up my Model Y Performance on Dec. 26th... no ghost sounds when backing up.

By the way... I have a 2018 M2, and it isn't going anywhere! Great car! It handles like a Lotus Esprite I owned years ago, not as fast at the Model Y Performance, but it's a great car!

That ghost sound is on all of the ev/hybrid vehicles, it’s to alert people around the car that it’s moving (because it rides so quietly)
My 2020 Model 3 has the space ship back up sound - kind of surprised all Y's dont have this.
I actually like the backup sound. So many people in my neighborhood are distracted. I thought I read that the sound also goes off in drive if ur going below a certain speed? My Glc300 lease is up in January and I think the Y will be my next car
nice rides, but I like the most, is the side door on this guys home. Don't see many homes with that feature in AZ.
The new updates are exciting, gonna pull the trigger on a Y next month and I really didn't want to have to deal with all that piano black... Gonna do black interior though, white is too bright for me. Regarding the body roll, it's nice to hear people talk about that because I don't see much attention on handling. Usually it's just the acceleration which everyone already knows. The Y does handle weirdly well. Everytime I test drive one I keep expecting body roll that isn't there.
Thank you for the awesome video. One thing to note though, that is not the matrix headlight on the 2021 LR version. The matrix headlight should have the spherical bulb on the outer of each headlight, and currently only the new MYP has them.

I have a 2021 Rav4 and it also makes a similar sound when in reverse.
I picked up the 2021 MY with the old center console, everything else was updated including the double pane windows. Manufactured January 7th.

Me too. I picked mine up mid-February and I got all the updates minus the center console. I've read cars manufactured after Feb 7, have the new center console. It's unfortunate because I prefer the refreshed console. I love the car though.

I really am liking the white interior like you have but my concern is staining.. i often wear jeans and i know they transfer the color specially on hot days. Have you had much of an issue wearing blue jeans with the white seats? Did you find a good cleaner product to ensure color stains get removed? Cheers!

@@TheCarGuyWV I got in on my order before the price went up and thought about getting those 19” wheels and if I drop the 20” I lose that thousand dollar price drop the y had a week ago. So is the 20” wheels worth the 1000 I am paying for them or do you think the 19s are better ? If I change the order I pay a thousand more for the car since the price will change, I called Tesla and asked and they said any changes will result in a price Increase on my order since then price went up the other day.
@@aruth51485 you’re right, Tesla will change the price if you change your order. So, for $1000 I’d keep the 20’s. That’s what I have and even though it’s a harsh ride, they look great.

Yeah they added to the 3 in Sept 2019 but it wasn’t on the Y when they first came out in 2020.
Couple other differences you forgot to point out.. the rolls on the steering wheel are not just gray. But are now metal instead of rubber. If I'm not mistaken the early 2020 model y they removed the auto dim side and rear view mirrors. The 2021 they brought it back.. As for the reverse sound. My 2020 proformance Model 3 had it, as do a lot of other ev's so pedestrians can hear.
