- This past week I drove and reviewed the 2021 Tesla Model Y Dual Motor!! I had previously mentioned liking the Model 3 more than the Model S (at least up until the latest refresh)... and the same goes for the Model Y.
This is tremendous value for money in the compact SUV/Crossover space. The performance is there, the modern tech is there, and the brand appeal is certainly there!! At $50k as equipped, this is the common mans Tesla, and boy is the common man lucky!
Now, there are certainly some cons, which include the learning curve of not only an EV, but also of a single screen system. Almost everything takes place on the central screen, and that includes your speedometer readout.
Once you acclimate to the screen however, there is also the build quality and fit & finish which can often feel a grade or two below similarly priced vehicles.
What most those vehicles don't offer however, is an easy to live with EV experience, with abundant charging options, solid range, and INSTANT torque.
This thing is quick, and only quicker in the top of the range 'Performance' trim...
I'll hold off any final judgement until I see the Model S and X in person, but I can't imagine a better Tesla at this $50k price-point!!

The regen works exceedingly well and make for a very smooth transitions between slowing, stopping and accelerating again. I love it the way it is. The rear view works just fine. Less than what we are accustomed to but very functional. Ours is 6 weeks old. The wipers in auto work just as they should, no need to ever turn off auto. Screen is no more distracting than dealing with switches and radios etc. The whole thing just takes getting accustomed too. Fantastic vehicle. We have LR AWD. Driving town and rural I easily make the specified range. Yes, that will change in the colder weather. Very cheap to charge at night.

Yep, all that and it can tow up to 3500 lbs with the optional trailer hitch. It cuts into the range really bad but is nice for towing your boat around on short hops under 50 miles i.e. 100 mile round trip without recharging.
Being able to convert your favorite CD albums to MP3 files and copy them to a USB stick and play them in random order is another GREAT feature. You can also make custom folders with specific music and also play those in random order for your listening enjoyment.

We’ve had our Model Y for almost 4 months. Absolutely love it! Takes a little while to get familiar with the screen but after sitting in the garage and playing with it we got really comfortable with it.
It's definitely a stand out feature!! I only wish they still included a small digital gauge for Speedo readout, indicators, range, etc... but it looks like that's the path they're taking with the new Model S and X, so who knows ?!

The 20" wheels are a $2000US option and the white interior is a $1000US option. If you want faster acceleration, longer range and crisper handling, get the Model 3 Long Range. If you have a family, need more cargo capacity, or like a vehicle that is easier to get in and out of, get the Model Y Long Range.

I’m trying to decide which one to get it’s just my husband and I late 30’s couple but I have always drove a midsize SUV but not sure I could go to a car I like the extra room but I do love the white seats and the long range is that possible on this to get more range???
@@samanthapryor7972 Hi Samantha, I understand your struggle. Also just my wife and I, but we just turned 70. I have always been a sports car guy so I lean towards performance and handling. We just downsized to a retirement community and I used our previous Mercedes SUV to move most of our stuff over, very handy. We bought a 2021 Model 3 Long Range in December and are really enjoying it. I figured if we need to move something big we can borrow or rent a bigger vehicle for the day. The M3 and MY are basically the same vehicle mechanically. The MY has obviously more room, more useful rear hatch, easier to get in and out of, costs a few thousand more, poor view out of rear window and is now outselling M3. It also uses more energy, not quite as fast and not as good handling due to its larger size. The white interior is available in both and is harder to keep clean, but very durable by all reports. The choice is tough, but both are very good. It hinges on which characteristics are more important to you. I would recommend the Long Range version of each, if you can afford it. Do give both a good test drive and decide which one feels best for you.

I don't think they'll mess with either 3 or Y for a while. Reason: Y just came out and 3 was just refreshed (as was the Y actually after only 1 model year lol) ... so I think they'll stick with the current setup for at least a couple more years.

Good review. I'm always so jealous of the $50k starting price in U.S. In Netherlands they start at €64k ($78k) - which just feels like huge profiteering by Tesla, even after shipping and import duties. Which does not exist as they aren't available for import and that price is stated for when the Berlin factory in Europe starts making them eventually!

Not sure when this car comes out here in Australia (i am subscribed to updates) I would go the white and black wheels but it does not need 20" wheels, 18" would be sufficient cheaper to replace as well.
Ya, the base wheels are actually 19's on the Model Y, but I agree... will ride a touch smoother on those!! Good luck down under!

Hi How do you find the white interior compared to the normal black that most cars have Look's Great but is it practical ?
I actually have to give Tesla credit, it looks good and seems to hold up decently well according to long term owners.... I can't say much more than that as I only had the car for a day and it was brand new!

I’ve had the model y white interior for about 2 weeks now and I get worried every time I get in the car. I don’t put anything on the seats and if something does get on the seats most things come off easily with a baby wipe also there’s cleaning supplies out there

Thank you!! It's not my personal car, so my experience is limited, but I would say around 220-250 real world (mixed driving) without charging to 100% which isn't recommended for daily use
One of your down sides or negative point about the model Y was the rear visibility and that you wish the side mirrors were "bigger & wider" (technically 2 points but they have the same counter point). So while you’re driving and you want to look behind you , you swipe up on the camera 📷 Icon and the screen will give you different wide angle views of ALL your "blind spots" and the side mirror shouldn't be bigger they should be removed completely in my opinion because they cause unnecessary drag and decrease the range. The side cameras can provide much better field of view that the mirrors

You mentioned when you’re sitting in middle seat your head is about to touch the roof. How tall are you?
6'2... it's just that on any large bump, you shoot up into a glass roof instead of any sort of headliner! More of a problem on the Model 3 than the Y, but worthy of pointing out for taller passengers 👍
This might seem petty but I have to ask. So, I test drove a model Y and was shocked at the lack of visibility through the rear windshield. The Tesla only has a slit to look through. It’s almost non existent. I’m used to a huge rear windshield. Now, I realize that the Model Y has a camera, but I don’t like that I’d have to push a button and look at the screen in order to scan behind me, rather than a quick glance in my rear view mirror. Feels unsafe. What do you think about this?
Yes I agree, I mentioned this in the video. Rearward visibility is not amazing in the Model Y... yes as you mentioned, there's many cameras, but the rear view mirror is not very useful for a quick glance. Front visibility however, is very good!!

Personally I'm not sure. I wanna say it's possible, but I've never put a kayak on any car myself, so I don't wanna misdirect you.
I'd imagine slightly more rugged cars, such as the Land Rover Defender, would excel at tasks like that.
You don’t want weight on the glass itself. Roof racks with the bars going across work really well

I'm thinking on the rear view is so bad , the trade off is the cameras?? When I had driven one this past Saturday I felt the same . Thought it was me .
Ya I suppose the cameras make up for it in tricky parking maneuvers, but they aren't able to help you much in normal driving situations aside from giving you a collision warning

The time I had in the test drive wasn’t long enough but that’s the first thing I noticed when looking in the rear , looked really cheap far as the view and the mirror wasent the best as well the side as stated we’re better , maybe the new model coming out will address this issue. A whole heck of a lot longer than an ICE car can!!!
ICE cars rely on their stored energy to run AC... while an EV can just pull from their massive battery

2 reasons, this car didn't have the $10k 'Full Self Driving' AND Tesla's FSD is not really FSD at all... it's Level 2, which you can find on many other makes of car (certain BMW, Mercedes, Range Rover, Subaru, etc) ...
So basically ya, it is very much so "supposedly" because Elon has claimed it but it's not reality.

A heavy right foot and driving habits is what impacts range, a reasonable driver in milder weather will have no problem with range.

@@Reoniz I have driven our model Y for 1000 miles. I pay close attention to the information presented to me on the display. Almost always the averages are between 130watts per km and 150 watts per km. I am sure that will increase if I drive at 70mph for extended periods. These are my facts.

The Berlin Model Y is the Tesla I want. Get rid of the doors that don't fit, the squeaks and rattles. The Fremont frame was a last minute scramble when the aluminum skateboard/new battery pack failed to materialize.
I hear you, but I'm not 'buying' into the radically improved Berlin Model Y until I see it!!
If, however, it's as good as it's claimed to be, well then yes, that would be the one to have!

the regen brakes can be turned off in the settings, I figured that out on accident and then freaked out when I was expecting the car to stop and had forgotten that I even changed it lol
I don't think 2021 and newer models have this feature anymore... I've seen 2018 and 19's that had it though

We’re going to look into the Tesla this year. However I still feel EV’s are still in their infancy and things can
improve making your current EV not as in demand.
My biggest problem with buying an EV is always having to think about range, being charged enough for
the trip I’m making.
With a gas car you fill up your tank and don’t give it a thought for 300+ miles.
I’m a Baby Boomer and think this change might be too much for me. 😉
Both are fair points. The bigger "infancy" issue is charging infrastructure... although Tesla's the best in this regard.
On the note of range anxiety, it's a very real thing and I would suggest anybody looking to make frequent trips with their car to look into either a very efficient ICE car or some sort of Hybrid!

@@Reoniz I don't have kids and if I need to carry cargo I can use my old Honda Odyssey minivan and if I need to carry even more I can attach my utility trailer to the Honda. I've been spoiled by driving my old BMW M Coupe.

Why do ppl say it gets 320 miles?! It does not! Road trips are terrible on this, unless if you plan to go 70 miles an hour, stay on the right lane with your ac/display off and add an extra hour to your trip.

You're absolutely right... I've actually had nothing but bad experiences trying to "road trip" with a Tesla... you have to stop more often than you think and it's wasted time in my eyes. Range anxiety is REAL!! That's why I'm personally holding off making the switch to EV's for as long as I can lol 🙏🏼
