Hey Matt, Question is there any difference between the two models when it comes to sound system. Like how the model 3 performance has the subwoofer but the rear wheel drive does not?
The major benefit of swapping out the 21 inch wheels for 19 inch wheels, or even 18 if you can find them that fit the calipers oh, is it the initial sidewall gives you much more protection against pinching a tire, or bending wheel. I don't have a model y, currently I have a Mazda 3 Turbo, which I chose because I drive a lot through the North Georgia Mountains where superchargers are too few. The relevance of that is the Mazda3 has 18-inch wheels, and 2 tires on potholes, destroying one wheel. It would be even worse with a 21-inch wheel. I'm returning from Starbase in Boca Chica today. And while I was there I got to experience several late model Tesla's, and that has convinced me. My next car will very likely be a model y or a model 3 assuming that the supercharging network in North Georgia improved significantly in the meantime. If I got one I would immediately swap it for the smallest wheel I could get to fit the calipers with the largest sidewall. There is not much of a performance penalty. As a younger man I used to race cars a bit. And even then on my porch I got smaller Wheels with larger sidewalls After experiencing pinched tires & destroyed forged wheels. My lap times were not significantly different using 16-inch wheels versus 18in Wheels. And I had a lot fewer failures of tires and wheels.
Model Y Performance has upgraded Matrix headlights, Painted calipers, larger brakes, and sports suspension (not just lowered). These items might've been missed in the video.
Yeah, all Tesla vehicles have matrix headlights since spring of 2021. This is not specific to the performance. Even those last few 2021 standard range Ys still have matrix
Hard to believe people were paying $69k for the MYP a year ago… they’re $51,490 before incentives now ($37,490 if you qualify for tax credit). That shit must sting.
I test drove both 2023 models in the same day. This is a easy secession that performance blows away the LR. Handles better, drives over bumps better l, handles better of course it’s faster. It’s just a better machine.
Long range all day! First, the more range the farther you can travel, very important with ev's! Second, the car is already faster than 95% of the vehicles on the road, why pay extra to shave off 0.8 second of your 0-60? With the acceleration boost the long range gets even faster at 4.2 0-60, which is absurd for a car that's already very fast! Third, you get an option for the 7 seater, it may be tight but if you have a small kid or small friend they can fit there just fine! Fourth, it's cheaper!!! I'm thrilled with MY Long Range, I have nothing but great things to say about it. Extremely safe and getting safer with each update, very dependable, high quality build and I've bodied many muscles cars and supercars with my long range, which feels great!!!😂 and I'm paying $13.77 for a full charge, mic drop!!!! Get a Tesla you will be very happy! Peace!
Test drove both last week. Though the P is a stiffer ride. I found the LR w 19” wheels to be much more bouncy. I rattled more in the LR than the P. Going w the P.
This is exactly the reason I went with the P. Even though it’s a bit more firm, it’s MUCH more composed compared to the LR. Going around corners and imperfections in the LR felt like I was in a bounce house. Really uncomfortable to be honest.
When talking about the pros/cons of the YP, you missed the opportunity to mention the staggered wheel sizes and how they contribute to the better handling, not being able to rotate tires like the YL, and the extra cost of replacing them. Otherwise awesome video, one of the best I've seen out there when comparing the two. cheers!
not being able to rotate tires is huge. EV owners boast either lower maintenance costs, or “better for the environment” - throwing away tires every 18 months is neither
Maybe I'm missing something but the acceleration of the Performance seems worth it for 15 fewer miles of range if performance is worth it to you. If it were 100 more miles it'd be a different story. Is the difference in real-world driving more 15 miles?
Thanks for a great comparison. I just received my VIN on a Long Range, after driving a MS LR over the last ten months. I plan to add the $2K Performance boost, because I want the ability to “scoot” when necessary.
Excellent, detailed info, Matt! You always do a great job. The only detail I'd add is the option of Acceleration Boost for the Model Y Long Range. It costs $2K, but splits the difference of 0-60 time between the Long Range and Performance variants (4.2 sec 0-60). Great for folks that want a little extra zip but don't want to sacrifice range or ride quality.
@@TheRealRoscoe Just ordered the long range Y, even though it was a close call due to acceleration difference. Thanks for this unlock info - it will be the first thing we purchase on the Tesla app.
The number one regret I have with my Model 3 RWD standard range, is knowing that a Model Y long range will come along that can charge at 250kWh all the way to 50% using the BYD blade batteries. Summary: 250kWh charging speeds for 50% of 330miles of range is 165 miles in less than 6 minutes. Now add the HW4 and juniper upgrades. Damn amazing.
Great video. I initially ordered the long range, but switched to the Performance and no regrets. I like the sportier handling and the car just looks better.
I got the LR and then added Acceleration Booster using reward points. I’ll take the longer range over the “performance “ you really never get to use in daily driving, and save $4,000.
Not sure if it has been mentioned, but MYP buyers can find someone to swap their 21s for the 19” Gemini LR wheels to both gain comfort and the LR efficiency back. Best of both worlds… speed and efficiency.
Not exactly. It’s a trade off. The 21’s are staggered and corner much better. The larger back tires are better able to handle the torque from larger rear motor in the MYP. The combination is needed to get the 3.5 second 0 to 60. Range will be better but not by 27 miles.
Great comparison. Question can you put 19 inch Gemini wheels on Model Y PR and what the pros and cons of doing so? Not too mention the lower suspension
Good video but just a reason why people claim MY is uncomfortable is because they drive other cases. A few friends around me driving Benz GLE or even BMW 330 got a MY then their 3-year old kids literally complained it was less comfortable than their previous cars.
I can't decide if i want the Long range or Performance. 1. Suspense was lower by 1 inches, does it impact if i drive on snow? 2. 21 inches tirese i heard you can't rotate since rear tires are wider than front. 3. Does performance have more noise than Long range?
I have the MYP, but would prefer 19 or 20in Wheels over the 21 for more Tire options. Most Tire shops have to order the 21in sizes while 19s and 20s are available when needed.
Are the performance brakes any different besides being painted? Like larger calipers and pads? Cylinders? I know the brake pedal has an aluminum cover but I'm wondering about actual mechanics.
I got myself a M3. So not comparing M3 vs MY here. I had a lot of angst choosing between M3 LR and M3 P. In the end I went for M3 LR and I don't regret that decision. Although the range difference between the two models is not that much, I planed to do a lot of road trips in remote Australia and I found I did need that little extra range. For around town the extra range is wasted. A lot of people complain about the ride quality of Teslas. Most of those complaining have been in a performance model Tesla. I don't like the ride quality of the performance model 3, expressly as a passenger. The M3 LR is just much nicer. The performance model does look a little bit more aggressive and does handle quite a bit better. The acceleration of Teslas is a wonder to be held and so so much fun. The M3 LR does 0-100km(60miles) in 4.3 seconds and the performance model does the same in 3.3. That is a lot of extra fun in the M3 P. You can get a acceleration boost for the M3 LR for $2000 which I did. This brings the LR Model down to 3.8 seconds for the 0-100/60. Which is 0.5 seconds slower than the M3 P. At these speeds 1/2 a second is a lot and the M3 P wins in acceleration fun. You can get the acceleration boost for the Model Y as well, dropping 1/2 a sec off your 1-100/60. So for me I prefer the LR over the P. The ride is a lot better. The range is a little better, enough to make a difference for me but probably not for most people. If you get the 2K acceleration boost then the fun in the P is a little better, but the LR with the boost is still seriously fun. Hopes that helps people choose.
Another thing to mention is that the Performance Model Y delivery times is Sept-Oct of 2022 whereas the Long Range Model delivers Dec 2022 - April 2023. So for those who don't want to wait 3-6 months for their car and have the extra cash the Performance Model might be the way.
Excellent review, comments and info. I just changed my order from long range to performance. Not 100% sure it was the right move for me, but I think it was. We'll find out!
I did the same and I got instant buyers remorse. I’m not a big car guy so the speed and sportiness isn’t a big factor. However, the MYP does look a lot better so I’m trying to decide if the extra $4K was worth it on looks alone. I care about range and comfortability a little more, which tells me I should’ve stuck with the LR. But I also simply want the better car at the same time so I’m so torn!
@@agentninja1update please I take delivery of my performance at end of December and I am feeling torn as well. Should I switch back to LR? 70% of my driving will be in my City commute, errands, and appointments. Mild to state travel
Taking delivery of my MYP in the next couple weeks... my problem is the tires are spring/summer tires... might order a set if 19 inch wheels with all season tires for the fall/winter and swap them out
I have been debating between the two and the ground clearance is one thing I care a lot. You mentioned the diff is 1" and I guess it is by average, and the front diff is more while the rear diff is less. Do you feel the extra 1" diff would be a deal breaker? How much would the extra 1" be needed in daily life? e.g. steep driveway, high curb when head in parking, etc. Thanks!

Dude! That was the greatest well thought out spoken comparison. So helpful! It's a rare person who owns both and in addition has the gumption to make videos! I just ordered two Y's... One of each... And I'm still deciding which one to cancel! Hoping one of them is ready before the March 31st tax credit deadline!
I have an M3 with 19” sport wheels. The ride is firm and you can feel a lot of the imperfections of the road. What bothers me is the road noise. I’m wondering if a performance Y with the 21”s and being lower 1” to the ground picks up a lot of road noise. Also wondering if the Y long range with 19 or 20” and the higher suspension ends up killing some of the road noise.
Hi Matt thanks for the comparison I did order the long range I got the induction wheels 🛞 20 inch let me know if I made a wrong choice of wheels 🛞 or should I change it to 19 inch Gemini
Congrats on your order! The 20” wheels are also a great choice. I haven’t had the chance to test out the ride quality yet but I presume they are still very comfortable and have a good ride quality. I would test drive one with Gemini’s and one with the Induction’s to see which you like better. But if you like the looks of the Induction’s, I say just keep it as it is!
Great comparison! I agree with your assessment. Now look at the price! 52.5k for performance-such a steal. Ib drive a Y P and just got a LR for my wife (unlimited supercharging transfer). I have to drive it more but with the Pirelli Elect tires it is quiet and a bit smoother. However the Y P is still comfortable like a BMW. Firm but not harsh. Y LR feels a bit less secure in corners and high speeds (tires suspension) but still very good. For the new pricing I prefer the performance Y.
one thing to point out about range is that its based on a 100% charge at "ideal" driving conditions. In real-world conditions, the Long Range has better range in local driving and mixed driving where as the performance has better range at highway speeds based on Car and Driver testing. Likely attributable to the larger motors in the performance not having to work as hard at highway speeds as the long range motors would. I initially ordered the Long Range and then changed to the performance since I like the option of the extra acceleration and the visual appeal of the uberturbine wheels. They're both good variants, just depends on what you want in a spec

Excellent detail here, thanks for sharing. Great video. I would love to know more about any differences in the settings / menus / interior of the cars as well. The long range has standard and chill, is it the same for Performance? Are the upgrade options the same?
Thanks for the feedback! Performance has chill & sport instead of chill & standard for the driving mode. Steering wheel mode is the same between the two with the 3 options they come with
Great vid! Can you do a video comparing a used Model X that's the same price as a new Model Y Performance, and the pros and cons of each, as well as which you would choose and why?
No, but yes. The plaid has carbon wrapped rotors for better high rpm power. Iirc the rear motor in the model 3/y is used as the front motor on the model S/X. But the plaid has a special dual motor in the rear. Super cool.
@Kevin Saint sorry but you are incorrect. Until 8/2022 they were only available in MYP and Model 3. You can check it out on drive tesla. This was due to shortages. That is one of the reasons I got my MYP instead of MYLR in 11/21.
@@tmorcos21 Thank you for your comment. I watched a Gjeebs video from 1 year ago where he is comparing his 2020 Model Y to a 2021 Model Y to see all the little differences (double pane windows, upgraded interior, etc.) and in that video, he shows where the 2021 LR has the matrix headlights and talks about that being one of the differences. Yes, this is a key point for consideration. I was aware of this but still chose to get the MYP. One key for me is to use the MYP torque judiciously to minimize tire wear.
Great infovideo! Thank you. I test drove the M3P and the MYP. I ended up ordering the MYP (Jun-Jul delivery). I don’t mind the stiff suspension and actually like how it responds. I own the Xpeng P7 Performance, and when it comes to smoothnes and how comfortable a car can be, it is Superior to Tesla, any Tesla actually. I do have an order in for TMY Performance. This is produced in Berlin vs Long Range in China. P version have upgraded damping and is better, more comfortable, even with 21" wheel. It is the better car of those two versions, much better brakes too and would definitely bring way more cash when sold. Also sold a M3 two years ago here in Norway, and earned more than I payed for it new
@@Vonliten Yes, it has. Ive tried it also with 19" wheels, which also adds to an even more comfortable ride, longer driving distance,+all the Performance benefit for those who crave that:) Maybe I will change to 19" wheels when it arrives later this year, havent decided yet
I have 2022 MY Performance and bottom cushion of driver seat bluster are very firm and reach to the point , it's comfortable. However passenger side is very soft and comfortable. I heard from a person, performance has more sporty driver seat compare to long range. do you have same experience? again mine is 2022 and apparently this is new change.
I did an extended test drive of both cars today (2023s). LR with 20” tires. If you have any sensitivity to noise or harsh ride you will notice a clear difference.
Y is the best Tesla-value, utility, safety, design/construction, overall performance (including efficiency, lighter weight handling than S/X and sound system)
The performance is lower ! Be careful with approach / departure angles if you have a steep drive. If you need to .. get the LR. However, do buy acceleration boost and the better (non plastic trim ) 20 inch turbine wheels !! (Or the 21’s if you can afford them )
Great video! I clicked like :) Please how does the model Y performance regenerative breaking power compare to Y long range? One of my favorite parts of driving EV’s is the regen- my Bolt had phenomenal regen and I rarely touched the break. A 2019 model S 100D I’ve driven doesnt have very good regen and with regular driving I had to push the brake pedal frequently. A 2022 model 3 performance I drove had near equivalent regen to the Bolt in low mode and holding the steering wheel paddle.
I guess the fact that the performance only comes with summer tires is not important to you and if you live in an area with heavy snow, you will need another set of tires
@@lalail61 it’s good if your under 5’7” ish I’d say. The shorter the better. I’m 6ft tall and my head almost touches the back window, and my legs will have no wiggle room. Not comfortable at all. Would work for short distance but not really recommended if your tall than 5’7” ish. I used it a bunch of times since I do Uber with it sometimes, and no one’s ever complained. Usually the tall people will go in the front and the shortest in the back. Keep in mind that if you do use the 3rd row the second row will have to sacrifice leg room so the person on the 3rd row can have leg room. It has 3 clicks stages. The more leg room they need the more you have to scoot it forward. If their short on the third row than you don’t have to sacrifice too much leg room. Overall it’s good for kids or short adults like ladies. Not tall people. I don’t use it all the time but it’s nice to know it’s there incase I need it.
LR and it wasn't even a decision to think about. Longer range, don't care about 1 second faster to 60 for a car already fast, 19s are way cheaper and a square setup I'm tired of staggered setups and 19s are nicer ride. If you want acceleration boost then buy it, plenty of head to head drag races of YLR with acceleration boost beating the performance if you're into that. $40,250 after fed, state and county incentives was an easy decision.
Really dislike that tesla is getting away with not having a traditional cockpit and not a proper multi-funktion stearing wheel. Otherwise they are not that bad. Therefore i really like the older model S and X with the traditional cockpit
GET PERFORMANCE, 50 km added for long range both ev will loose its juice capacity over the years anyway soo enjoy the performance one.. no need to hessistate with an extra 50km since there are fast Chargers out there…
The road noise is not so quiet except the new 2023, the comfort does suck lol it’s really choppy and vibrates to every little bump on the road and I rode on 19s, I’m not sure how or why someone including you say it’s smooth I mean have you driven a Camry? Camry is way more smooth and it’s a basic car. I myself drive a Lexus LS460 but forget my car go drive a Toyota Highlander it’s what I would call smooth
It depends man, what car do you have now. If I were you I would lease a tesla or get it with a financial loan in which I pay monthly. I would never buy it with cash, put your cash in the stock market and leave it there for 3 years at least then you will have gotten your money worth. Do not ever just buy a car in this price range with cash, let your cash work for you homie.
This is true haha. I ordered a MYLR because I have had sporty suspension before and did not like it for our roads here in Sweden. Our roads are getting worse and worse unfortunately. Otherwise I would go for Performance, even though in Sweden the price difference is 11-12000 USD between long range and performance. Worth to mention is that the performance is a bit lower and will not be as good on "forest roads" which I tend to drive on when doing Motocross, with the motocross on the tow bar. So for me it is an easy choice. If I didn't do motocross I would probably go for performance.

It costs $2K, but splits the difference of 0-60 time between the Long Range and Performance variants (4.2 sec 0-60). Great for folks that want a little extra zip but don't want to sacrifice range or ride quality.
Thanks! Yeah the AB is a nice upgrade for those who want the long range but not performance
The acceleration boost is no longer available for purchase for the model y long range
@@rhsalce I see it right here as an available purchase in the Tesla app.
Best money spent on my LR MY.
Super accurate comments Matt !! But you should have mentioned the acceleration boost !!
0-60 in 4.2 s all for a tiny €1500 upgrade
Thanks! And yeah the AB is a nice upgrade 🔥
I chose the P because it’s there when I want it, horses for courses.
The upgraded performance rims are designed to withstand the speed and a feeling of the performance.
Great comparison. Question can you put 19 inch Gemini wheels on Model Y PR and what the pros and cons of doing so? Not too mention the lower suspension
Just ordered my MYP. Can’t wait though I’m nervous switching from a RAM Rebel to A small SUV.
Let us know how you get on !
(As. MY owner, I think you’ll be happy )
Nice, I ordered my myp back in April and was supposed to arrive June 22- august 28. Now it says august 10- sept 27
I just ordered a MYP today. How worried should I be about the suspension? Some of these reviews frighten me
Are the performance brakes any different besides being painted? Like larger calipers and pads? Cylinders? I know the brake pedal has an aluminum cover but I'm wondering about actual mechanics.
Apparently not the 2023 model. The brakes, and suspension are the same.
Some even say they have the same motor, just limited by software.
Model 3 is a fantastic vehicle as well. I own the model 3 performance and the wife has the model Y long range 😊
why havent you talked about the 20inch tires which some ppl do choose.
Another thing to mention is that the Performance Model Y delivery times is Sept-Oct of 2022 whereas the Long Range Model delivers Dec 2022 - April 2023. So for those who don't want to wait 3-6 months for their car and have the extra cash the Performance Model might be the way.

Whats the ground clearance difference?
Excellent review, comments and info. I just changed my order from long range to performance. Not 100% sure it was the right move for me, but I think it was. We'll find out!
I did the same and I got instant buyers remorse. I’m not a big car guy so the speed and sportiness isn’t a big factor. However, the MYP does look a lot better so I’m trying to decide if the extra $4K was worth it on looks alone. I care about range and comfortability a little more, which tells me I should’ve stuck with the LR. But I also simply want the better car at the same time so I’m so torn!
What did you find out?
@@agentninja1update please I take delivery of my performance at end of December and I am feeling torn as well. Should I switch back to LR? 70% of my driving will be in my City commute, errands, and appointments. Mild to state travel
Where’s this? What is the name of city and state?
Taking delivery of my MYP in the next couple weeks... my problem is the tires are spring/summer tires... might order a set if 19 inch wheels with all season tires for the fall/winter and swap them out
I heard the performance can’t take 250w charging
We have a £10k price difference between the two model currently in the UK, which was a step too far for me, so ordered the LR.
It's a step too far for me too. I can't bring myself to pay 10k extra for the MY P over the LR.
2023 LR should have matrix headlights. They are awesome!
Was that 1" suspension drop actually measured? I understood it was only a 10mm drop.
Very well done. You are a master of the craft. One question, do both LR and Performance come with the same sound system?
Thank you! Yes, same speaker system of 13 speakers, 2 amps, and 1 subwoofer
That’s a good question Roger.
They do … and it’s unbeatable !
I sometimes sit in my Y listening to the music !
@@maxflight777 I sit in the garage listening to music, volume cranked up. I was so pleasantly surprised.
Thanks!
I don’t see the 1” lower being a problem. Not a deal breaker. It’s 1” lower all around, not just the front
Performance 👍👍👍
You shoukd do a vid about the motors in these cars. Like I still don't know what motor I have
Great review! 1 more thing I wanna add is that the Performance comes with new Matrix headlights while LR does not.
Thanks & yes forgot the mention the matrix headlights the performance has
The LR also has the matrix hardware
Do both models have dual pane windows in the front and back?
And I had a lot fewer failures of tires and wheels.
.
Just bought a model 3 2023 a month ago and since it held its value im trading it in for a model y performance.
How much much they quoted you for your model 3?
Dude! That was the greatest well thought out spoken comparison. So helpful! It's a rare person who owns both and in addition has the gumption to make videos! I just ordered two Y's... One of each... And I'm still deciding which one to cancel! Hoping one of them is ready before the March 31st tax credit deadline!
Thank you for the feedback, I’m glad you enjoyed the video!
What about long range with performance tires?
Great comparison. Thank you. I have a red Performace 2022 too
How do you like it so far? Almost year passed since your comment. Any regrets?
I have an M3 with 19” sport wheels. The ride is firm and you can feel a lot of the imperfections of the road. What bothers me is the road noise. I’m wondering if a performance Y with the 21”s and being lower 1” to the ground picks up a lot of road noise. Also wondering if the Y long range with 19 or 20” and the higher suspension ends up killing some of the road noise.
I have a M3 too, Competition. I am looking to buy the Y performance.
Dumb Question?
If I was to put lighter 19's on my performance, would i be up to 330 rated range?
They're both good variants, just depends on what you want in a spec
are the performance brakes noticeably better?
I heard the 2023 MYLR and MYP got newer and improved suspension.
Good comparison video! Do you see the range on each variant to be accurate ? Or do you see less of an average range
It tends to be way less
Love my 2022 Perf Model Y !! One other difference between the models is the adaptive headlights on the performance model.
What do the adaptive headlights do exactly?
@@Max-ss2gh they auto-dim for starters. Think of them more as a projector or an LED TV than a traditional headlamp. The LED matrix headlights can dim or turn off regions of the beam to avoid glare for the oncoming traffic, whilst still shining a light on the rest of the road.

Real life driving is about 15 to 20% less depending on your driving
Great vid! Can you do a video comparing a used Model X that's the same price as a new Model Y Performance, and the pros and cons of each, as well as which you would choose and why?
Does the performance model use a version of the Plaid motor?
I don’t think so. Not sure
No, but yes. The plaid has carbon wrapped rotors for better high rpm power. Iirc the rear motor in the model 3/y is used as the front motor on the model S/X. But the plaid has a special dual motor in the rear. Super cool.
I've rented both and the Performance is very noticeable vs the long range. Handling, stability, and ride quality are far better on the Performance.
Nice video. One more difference is the front lights. The performance has the new Matrix lights, where the long range doesn't.
Why is this not one of the first most notible differences?
@@Siimonbby I believe it was due to supply shortage. I don't know if they are in the long range yet
Matrix headlights have been in the LR Y since 2021 and they are also in every Model 3 variant (and have been since 2021).
@Kevin Saint sorry but you are incorrect. Until 8/2022 they were only available in MYP and Model 3. You can check it out on drive tesla. This was due to shortages. That is one of the reasons I got my MYP instead of MYLR in 11/21.

Cant rotate the front wheels to the back as the wheels and tyre widths are different.
Yes, the performance has a staggered wheel setup. The long range does not, so you can do a regular tire rotation with the long range

Please how does the model Y performance regenerative breaking power compare to Y long range?
One of my favorite parts of driving EV’s is the regen- my Bolt had phenomenal regen and I rarely touched the break. A 2019 model S 100D I’ve driven doesnt have very good regen and with regular driving I had to push the brake pedal frequently. A 2022 model 3 performance I drove had near equivalent regen to the Bolt in low mode and holding the steering wheel paddle.
I guess the fact that the performance only comes with summer tires is not important to you and if you live in an area with heavy snow, you will need another set of tires
Right, and they’ve been slowly phasing them out and the Performance’s are coming with all season Michelin’s
@@MattDanadel yes, which is exactly what I want.

How’s the leg-room on the 3rd seat? Is it reasonable?

Performance!!!!!!!!
The same people that complains how they’d never buy a performance model, but spends money and time to make it look like one lol.
Facts
This is true haha. I ordered a MYLR because I have had sporty suspension before and did not like it for our roads here in Sweden. Our roads are getting worse and worse unfortunately. Otherwise I would go for Performance, even though in Sweden the price difference is 11-12000 USD between long range and performance.
Worth to mention is that the performance is a bit lower and will not be as good on "forest roads" which I tend to drive on when doing Motocross, with the motocross on the tow bar. So for me it is an easy choice. If I didn't do motocross I would probably go for performance.
