  • Edmunds took ownership of a 2020 Tesla Model Y Performance last year as part of our long-term test program. Now, one year later, Carlos Lago shares the team's experience after approximately 9,000 miles of use.
What was it like to drive the Model Y for a year? How reliable was it? What kind of maintenance was needed and what issues popped up? What was the range on our Model Y? Is the Model Y one of the best small SUVs on the market? We answer these questions and more. We also detail the highs and lows of owning and driving the 2020 Tesla Model Y Performance.

@@sphaera3809 If you don’t care about the lightening quick acceleration, go with the e-tron. That was #1 choice coming out of a Q7, but there was that issue right when they first came out with the electric cords and fire possibility, so sales were put on hold. Plus, they were way overpriced at the time. They’ve come down since then and the delta isn’t as much since you still get the full $7,500 for the e-tron, which rides MUCH better, charging is faster, and isn’t that far off on the range as Teslas are way over promised on range (I owned a 3 and Y). Now that I don’t need as much room, waiting for the Q4 etron. Should be a winner.

To be clear this is just the display computer, the car is still fully functional to be driven manually during the reboot process, autopilot can keep driving as well but use extra caution since you don’t have visual alerts and only minimal audio alerts and feedback until after the reboot completes. In 2.5 years with the model 3 I manually rebooted probably 5 times across the ~50 software versions during that time. No manual reboots that I can recall in 2021, this was all further back.

      1) Just see the video how they negatively mention the nice wheels (!!?) - but its ok on the corvette (??).
      2) And several times mention the black screen (althoug common on all new cars, and you DONT have to stop - but kan keep going,
      3) AND they mention that Tesla say you should only charge to 90%, so range is even less (come on now). Tesla is famous for best in class long lives batteries - and 90% is a recommendation when not going for at long trip. Plenty of taxi's are Tesla and they charge to 100% daily and have 150.000miles on the clock.
      4) The full selv driving system is NOT working - everybody is (or should be) aware of that - and probably wait buying it. Tesla is still way in front of their peers - and the FREE Autopilot does the job fantastic (also compared to peers like Benz or Porsche). So do som praise of that instead of only bashing the FSD.

Ride was way too rough compared to my 3 and it was just the LR AWD, non performance version. My Model 3 LR AWD was much smoother and compliant. Was put off by the initial quality of my Y…headliner hanging, dirty as all get up…panel gaps worse than normal, and a few other issues. Back seat alignment was very off…tires with the aero caps on them made loud creaking noises…Never got the shroud for the heat pump on mine, so it was noisy…I loved everything else about the car, but I’ll wait another year or so before considering another one…

Car journalists see a lot of cars, so they can really judge a car compared to its peers, but they rarely get used to any car so they don't come to appreciate the nuances and skew toward valuing predictable vehicles that hew to the mean over cars with subtle charms but a few quirks.

You can restart the screen while you drive. It only takes about a minute for it to come back on. You're not constantly touching your screen and adjusting controls while you drive. Waiting a minute to adjust a control may be inconvenient but not a big of a deal as the video is making it considering most people are paying more attention to the drive vs constantly needing to make adjustments using the screen while driving.

Just hot the two buttons as you are driving down the road. It may be a little disconcerting watching the display computer reset, but the car still drives, even if FSD is engaged. It's ONLY the display/audio computer that get's reset. Try it driving down any road, probably want to do it on a backroad first, to prove it to yourself. Radio stops, turn signal clicks stop (but signals still work). FSD works.

Yes the windshield wipers auto turn on and off by themselves, but when the driver wanted to adjust the wiper speed during what was obviously not perfect weather (it was raining after all) the driver had to dig down a list of menus on that screen and got in a wreck. Versus having a manual control right by the steering wheel where I can take ONE hand off the wheel for 1 or 2 seconds turn a dial to change the speed up or down and still be looking down the road with full control of the car.
And saying you CAN use you voice for everything sounds nice. But are people actually doing that in practice? Are they saying "adjust temperature to..." in a Model 3 99% of the time, or is it closer to reality to say they are looking down at the touch screen to adjust temp while moving 70% of the time? I suspect the latter is closer to the truth. Now autopilot may be helping control for the greater distraction and having autosteer counter the additional lane swerve it's hard to say. But I'd be curious what the "distracted driving" stats are after a few years of model 3 use vs cars that don't have so much controlled by a screen that takes your eyes off the road.

I own a Tesla, invest in Tesla, and believe that EVs are the future, and I completely agree with this review. For the average person that buys an EV, they will charge at home while they sleep and therefor the charging network really doesn't matter. I can count on one hand how many times I've used the supercharging network to charge more than 30-40% of the battery at a time, in the last 3 years. After replacing 3 tires and 1 wheel due to potholes, I ended up replacing my wheels to a smaller 18" wheel with bigger tires, and ride quality improved quite drastically.

Glad to see this review. I'm a mostly happy owner of a 2020 Model 3 Standard Range, with no Autopilot or "full self-driving." It's a great car at a great price that's really fun to drive, with great charging infrastructure and okay but overpromised/underdelivered range. My issue is that I'm a professional transportation planner with a degree in engineering, and it's really off-putting that Tesla is still trying to sell something that no respected professional in the field believes it can safely deliver.
If they could swallow their pride and put that aside, they'd make a great car, but as it stands I'm losing faith in the company to do the right thing, and I don't think I'd return back for another Tesla. Hopefully by the time my car is due for replacement the charging infrastructure advantage will be a wash.

"respected professional in the field"? Hmm. This sounds a lot like you are trying to justify your view. Do you really think that Tesla will never figure out FSD? Seems to me it's not a question of if, but when.
As to overpromised/undelivered range, my experience over 25k miles is that the car delivers exactly what was promised. For Edmunds to ding the car for not meeting EPA range while not using it as per the EPA standard is rather meaningless. Carlos made it clear that they drag raced their car a lot....so would one reasonably expect it to meet the EPA standard?

    • @jonathansage2147
      @jonathansage2147 3 ปีที่แล้ว

@@dangrass It can't go the rated range at highway speeds. The EPA test isn't entirely done at highway speeds so folks really shouldn't be using that to determine highway range, but it's pretty obvious that's what your average person is going to do. Tesla really ought to publish range values by a couple common highway speeds, but that wouldn't be marketable so they've chosen the higher EPA range which is effectively meaningless for an actual driver trying to make a long range trip (which is the only time range matters).

The unfortunate thing is that the language around it encourages bone-headed, self-destructive behavior. I test drove both the 3 and Y performance and just fell in love the way they drive and accelerate compared to my Gt 350. As a result, I have a Y performance on order. I only get maybe 185-200 mile range before my gas light comes on. I will gladly take a 260 plus range from a Ev any day especially when you can charge at home and replenish that range every day. Great video guys. My first three months of Model Y ownership has been a very similar experience to yours.
I got the regular awd with 19" wheels. Ride is very stiff but livable. Doesn't handle freeway speed weight shifts well. Definitely not a BMW or Porsche quality suspension underneath this thing. I've managed to curb the 19" wheels a time or two, but thankfully the hub cap took the damage.
I get the screen freeze ups about once a month. But you can drive while the screen resets, just hold down both steering wheel buttons, no brake pedal.
Carlos forgot to mention that the auto windshield wipers are the worst in the business. Other luxury brands mastered this 15-20years ago. Tesla can't accurately identify light rain and wants to wipe way too fast for medium rain.
And the non fsd autopilot cruise control is not great either. Does pretty well in the dry, but throw a little rain at it, and things can get quite scary. Like unexplainable max brake check at 80mph...for NO reason. I've seen really scary weird behavior in light to medium rain. Like most cars, it will disable itself in a downpour.
I haven't had any loose body parts or other mechanical issues. Had one wheel fender trim loose at delivery, which was fixed quickly.
My driver window frequently gets confused. Will stop on the way up and then go back down. Have done the reset procedure, which reduced the frequency, but didn't completely eliminate the issue.
I'm getting a Tesla reported 330 watts/mile average energy use on mostly city driving. I haven't confirmed their reporting. And I live in a hilly, mountainous region. I think the burnouts and onramp antics might be affecting your range more than you think.
Hopefully Tesla will iron these issues out with their frequent software updates. If not, I may be shopping elsewhere for my next EV.

For the infrequent times you need max range, like just before starting a road trip, you absolutely can charge to 100%. I do. So your “real range” is not reduced by 10% because most of the time you charge to 90% or less. Normal daily driving, even with lots of trips around town or to nearby towns, only uses 20-40% of the battery, so 90% is more than enough. However, It is correct that range at highway speeds is less than Tesla’s official EPA number. You have to drive about 55 mph to hit that rated range number.

@@HarryKuloh dual motor model Y rides better because its on 19s, has better efficiency, is nearly as quick as the performance, and starts at 49590 and the performance starts at 59590. Dual motors also have option to purchase acceleration boost for 1500$ which gets you 0.6s off your 0-60 which is very noticeable when you are already quick at 4.8s to begin with.

Exactly. I'm listening to this review and I'm saying, "Why did you get the performance model?" Their primary complaints - wheels, ride, efficiency - would all be reduced with the Long Range MY.

What is Tesla “trade-in” offer from there site for your car?

They offer what they can expect to from an auction (or wholesale to a dealer). Better to sell to Vroom or similar.

After 40,000 miles with a Model 3 and FSD, I can tell you that I've had MUCH better experience with Autopilot than you have. I use it for about 98% of my highway miles. It has been wonderful. Is it perfect? No, i.e. sometimes it picks up the wrong speed limit (especially on new construction roads) and slows down when it shouldn't. But it also amazes me every time I use it, and it keeps getting better and better. I can't imagine buying a car without it. The system in the Mach-E is nowhere near as good and won't even change lanes for you. In fact, the wheel just stops operating when you turn on the blinker! Just check out the many TH-cam comparison videos. Autopilot is by far the industry leader, and it works almost anywhere (in the US at least).

I, too, love my autopilot. I use it daily and it relieves the stress of traffic. I look at other drivers, they're all so tense! I think the problem may be that the Edmunds people are always changing cars and driving different routes, so in those cases it's harder to use autopilot. I use it on long drives and my regular routes, because in those circumstances I can anticipate its few idiosyncrasies and I know the stretches where I can trust it.

I love using the autopilot on those long highway drives. I would like to try out the Super Cruise that is on the the Bolt EUV, looks like a great system

Got 60k on our Model 3. Mostly drive on AP for long trips. Totally agree. Also still glad I went with 18" wheels for the P version instead of performance wheels like he complains about here.

Wow did you nail this review. I had the 2021 version of your car on order but decided to bail for how bad it rode with those massive wheels and crappy suspension. I can't think of another SUV/CUV in its class that rides as badly as it does. Thankfully the long range AWD has pretty good performance and rides much better. Still far away from class leading but not going to crush your kidneys on most roads.
One thing you should have called out is how Tesla sort of plays fast and loose with performance times. They quote without rollout times for the performance version, which makes the difference look bigger than it really is, compared to the long range version. I am normally biased toward the higher performance versions of vehicles and this might be the first time I go down spec to get the better vehicle overall.
They really need to do something about the suspension, put actually lightweight wheels and tires more appropriate for a performance version. So if you buy one of these, plan on better wheels/tires and coilovers so at least another 6-7k and hope you can sell your stock wheels and tires to someone who has no clue about them. I couldn't believe how much curb rash the Model Y performance had at the Tesla store with just 200 miles on it. Magnet is not the appropriate term. It is more like the gravitation attraction of a black hole that sucks any curb to contact the wheel withing a 5 city block radius. Shame on Tesla for putting such crap on an otherwise great car. These don't help the range either.
I'd love to go for the MachE but the supercharger network is the one ace in the hole that Tesla has that nobody comes close to matching yet. At least the MachE seems to be its estimates. Give the MachE another year and Tesla will have a very serious competitor on their hands once Ford gets it more dialed in. Ford also hasn't raised its prices like the 4 times Tesla has done in just a few months this year. Maybe it was more but I gave up tracking it.

  • @travwill

Well you do have an early Model Y which was known for even worse build quality than the usual consistent Tesla build quality, but give that, these are crappy issues; rattles, unaligned panels, seats, interior falling apart, ha love that the foglight literally fell off into the bumper, loose bolt recalls, etc. We had similar on our S and X thus we have written off Tesla going forward. It is hard as they were such fun to drive and high tech cars which made you love them, but we have NEVER had a car (either) in the shop so much being repaired or recalled for pretty big things or maintenance items. They say EVs are low/no maintenance, but not Teslas. They are poorly built, lower quality, and I like to use the word "delicate."
