- Since the rollout of the Tesla Model Y in 2020, there have been a number of changes to the car. Over the course of the last year, Tesla has change, removed and included a number of new features and improvements.
When we made the decision to sell our 2020 Tesla Model Y, it was with the intent of ordering a 2021 Tesla Model Y with the 3rd Row. Having the 7 Passenger Model Y was something that we were going to need, and watching all the improvements get rolled out over the year meant the upgrade would include some nice new features.
In this video, I am going to cover all the differences in the 2020 vs 2021 Tesla Model Y.
Note, there was also an implementation of a new twilight that changed the color of the rear turn signal from red to orange, which was not included in this round up.

Note, I did not cover the rear taillights that were updated to change the color of the turn signal from red to orange.
I am extremely happy about the fact that they've changed it to amber from red. Can't stand brake lights that double as turn signals.

I recently change the air filter on my 2021 Model Y built date 03/2021 and noticed they changed the orientation of the cover of the filter since I was watching another video to learn how to do it. My point is that probably a lot more changes have happened that are not easy to find or visible. One last question, how can I tell if I have a larger battery pack? Thanks!!

Thanks, BTG for a great detail channel. I'm still waiting to order the Model Y out of Austin with the 4680 cell pack. I also hope it will have the front single-casting as well as the cell-pack single-casting piece. I drive in snow, ice and mud in Colorado so the ground clearance of the Model Y is critical as the Model 3 would just push snow. I will also be sure to get the standard wheels and put the winter tires on for that season - expensive to have 2 sets of wheels but easier for a standard shop to swap them out. The 2021 changes look fantastic - can't wait.

Strange that 98% of car owners in Norway have two sets of wheels, and do not have a rotating system when swapping wheels, while most americans seems to only have one set of wheels (all season tires) that are only "ok" in all conditions, and have a rigor wheel rotating system...
The sound insulation from the double pane windows has been one of the biggest motivators for me to update my MY to a newer build. You mentioned that it has helped with sound proofing but is its noticeably different? I'm anticipating (or hoping for) substantially less road and wind noise, particularly on the highway. Yes, the windows have made for less noise in the cabin overall. It is noticeable.

Thanks for this great video! I have to agree with you - the build quality has gotten a lot better. My MYP was delivered to me on 6/18, and I spent a good hour trying to find issues in the Tesla center parking lot where I live, and couldn't find any issues! The wife just bought me a model 3 this week for my birthday while I wait for the cybertruck and I couldn’t be more excited. I debated between the 7 seater Y or the performance 3 but went standard 3 as it has what I need for now and should be easy to sell when my truck is ready.
Going to be honest.. I’m still tempted at the performance model 3 I drove for 3 days and the guy is selling. God what an amazing car. If only it wasn’t another 20k to jump to performance in the truck!
The performance 3 is stupid fast. It’s awesome.

Justin, do the new tires have foam? If not, have you noticed more road noise when you swapped out the stock tires (old and new MY)?
No foam in the tires I put on and don’t notice any more noise than before

I noticed the performance version doesn't have red brake calipers on the tesla website. Do you know anything about this?
I don’t. I know they did the same thing to the plaid Model S, but not clear on why

No it keeps the same frunk!
Did you feel the need to add the trim seals on this model or did the double pane glass reduce the road noise enough?
It’s noticeable difference with just the updated windows but I am going to add them anyways

FYI: I ordered my Y on June 26th and my date range for delivery is 9-11-21 to 9-30-21. It changes daily. I sold my car and my buddy knew I needed something to drive so he let me use his extra stretch limo! hahaha

Any changes in emergency back door release in the new MY? That’s probably the only safety issue that concerns me in the Tesla.

Doubt the glove box would stop a crowbar. Of course there are always risks involved with accidents and no car is immune from risk of injury.

I seen a few tesla rear end accident in Atlanta most of them are due to stop and go traffic and people using auto-pilot with aggressive breaking. the 3 car length might help reduce that. I feel like Teslas should come with sudden break winnings as well.
Yea the vision system needs some improvement because it brakes pretty hard at setting 3

I sold my 2020 Y online, and got more than I paid for it. The plan was to get the 2021 Model Y, but I ordered a Model X instead. I absolutely loved the Y, but the X was the one I wanted from the beginning. I can’t believe I’m buying another car that I’ve never driven before. It’s going to be a very long 8 months before I get it. 😪

There’s minimal difference in performance, but there are some limitations on following distance and max speed. Otherwise, I wouldn’t let it deter you
I havent sold my 2020 PMY yet.. because I cant bear to be Tesla-less until December when my 2021 LRMY is allegedly arriving. Further, Im actually considering getting a 2022(?) Model X LR instead. Have you ever compared those two? I'd love to see that.

While all the updates are nice, am holding off for the 4680 batteries. Our 2020 LR AWD Y is paid for so I can easily wait for that change.

I take delivery in January for my long range model Y. Hoping by then the 4680's will be implemented. If not I may just hold off a bit longer or do what you did and just sell my model Y and upgrade

Tesla doesn’t roll out changes by model year, they continuously update the car so some of this came in 2020

Will this new Structural Battery Pack be replaceable in the event of failure or is the car junk if the battery goes dead?
This is not the new structural pack, its the same architecture with enhanced chemistry
The battery can be replaced but it’s in the ballpark of $17k

Received my model Y last week, I noticed last night that when I plugged it in and I began to slide the trip range and I noticed a new range of 338, I took a screenshot but now I can't replicate it again. I feel we are about to get an update and go from 326 to 340!!

They always had a rear casting it is just that, originally, it was in two pieces and joined in the middle. Now, it is one single piece.

No, they can break into the glove box, but it’s nice and out of sight

I want to get MY but because wife has back pain she does not want without lumbar. I’m sad because now she wants a Lincoln Aviator which my son has, it has. 22 position seat. I believe Tesla’s are the future and quality is getting much better. I still have my MX from 2017.

Do you know if the FSD subscription is for the month or for thirty days? In other words If you subscribed on the 15th of the month would the subscription end at the end of the month or the 15th of the next month?
It is 30 days, or 31 depending on the month. On the 15th, you'd have it until the following 15th if you were to cancel before the charge hits for the following month.

The updates look great but the only way I would sell my model Y is if the FSD stayed with me like any other software I've every bought for a computer. Even Elon says it is a computer on wheels. That is the biggest disappointment in owning a Tesla.
Yea that is the hard part about spending the big bucks on FSD. I wouldn't know how I'd feel about selling after spending 8-10k on FSD

Disappointed with new EV bill to restrict 40k for EV credit 7500. If the idea is to promote EV sales then I don’t think this is a right. Customers who are getting BMW X5 , Audi , Mercedes GLE would get encouraged to buy model y or mache if there is 7500 incentives. This Bill should encourage people who are getting luxury gasoline cars should go for luxury EV.

So you one of those drivers that won't let let me lane change to get off the highway and with your one car length driving at the speed limit you are a major contributor to those 100+ car pileups we see now and then. Yes I know we are making it easier for those type A personalities with their red cars that do constant lane changing to get where their going a few seconds quicker.. Or the person behind you is pissed that your using three car length distance. What most don't realize is that the vast majority of these drivers they have been in a rear end collision previously and just want to be safer drivers going forward. Please leave it up to the cops to catch those constant lane changers and there will be more of them caught in the future if we abide with safe distancing. My GPS has car distance warning feature and has helped me be a better driver,
I think you are assuming quite a bit. I don’t cut people off, but when I’m in the passing lane, 3 car lengths does not let the driver in front of me know that there is a line of people behind me and they are all pissed at me. 1 car length in a Tesla is plenty of room to let me know you’re coming over
