  • @tylerjurewicz9880
    @tylerjurewicz9880 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

From my perspective (which I know doesn't mean much) but for some of the younger fans like myself, the whole "tribute" idea Pete spoke about could be very interesting, especially since I came to appreciate Pantera after Dimebag's passing (I was about 8 at the time?) Being able to see some form of Pantera live could be really fun. If this comes to fruition, I think Zakk Wylde is almost a no brainer on guitar, and Charlie Benante is a good pick for drums, I was also skeptical of Mike Portnoy being asked to do it as well.
It definitely can't possibly be the same without either Dime or Vinnie, I think most, if not all of us can agree on that point. Labeling it as "Pantera" will be really weird, I think they should do a "Phil Anselmo/Rex Brown & Friends" type of thing. They shouldn't try and sell it as if they'd replace Dime or Vinnie \m/

I think this is a really interesting story. The closest comparison I can think of would be Roger Daltrey and Pete Townsend continuing as The Who. I know that the spirit of The Who, for many, died with Keith Moon--and definitely after the Ox. With Pantera, the band was obviously the Abbott brothers' creation. But then again, look at the Cavalera brothers in Sepultura. They've left, yet Sep continues to exist and does reasonably well.
How they choose to advertise this iteration of 'Pantera' will tell the tale. If they just announce that they're back, that will rub people the wrong way--it will look like Phil and Rex are capitalizing off the name. If they advertise it as a tribute to their legacy and recognize Zakk and Charlie are guests, and the tour is done tastefully, I see no issue whatsoever, and I'd even pay to see it. The surviving members of Queen have always billed themselves as Queen + Paul Rodgers or Adam Lambert. I know it's not classic Queen, of course, but the show would still be great to see. We're approaching the time where this will become more and more common as classic musicians pass away.

Their music helped me through many hard, dark times. Unfortunately I never got the chance to see them live. Now with Phil & Rex AND 2 of Dime and Vinnie's best friends rounding it out, I will move mountains to attend this show and take part in celebrating Pantera and what they still mean to me, and to the others attending who had this amazing band touch their lives in some way. You mentioned Lynyrd Skynyrd, and compared their situation to this, and I gotta say I agree pretty strongly… *but I agree because Skynyrd is the example of what happens when you go beyond just reunion and tribute to what the band was, and go to full blown NEW BAND making new studio albums under the OG band name, despite absolutely essential members of that band being gone.* To me, Skynyrd is the perfect example of how, as you rightfully put it, “watered down”, that the band’s music and history can become, and I absolutely don’t want to see that happen to Pantera. I cringe at the thought of Dime’s memory and legacy being basically (imho) disrespected, the way that Ronnie’s was in those later years when “Skynyrd” 2.0 (now like 4.0) released an album like ‘God & Guns’ (sorry, but Ronnie did write “Saturday Night Special”, and I don’t buy his little brothers attempt to square that albums lyrics with Ronnie’s lyrics from the Trve Skynyrd).
ANYWAY, I’m getting carried away… I’m just saying, that band was brought up and they’re THE example imo, of how reunion tours can go wrong, and water down a bands legacy (if not for 70s Skynyrd’s prowess, it’d be a drowning), even if they are incredible as a live force many years on (and they were, perhaps still are, and I’m sure Pantera can be too). Just please, let’s not dis the true OG’s of Pantera, and let’s keep it classy and respectful and have fun with it, and not make it about the money. If they do want to make new tunes, cool! But don’t call yourselves Pantera. Respect your fallen brothers! 🤘✌️

They should do what the Doors did. Granted, there was some legal stuff with John Densmore that contributed to what they called themselves but they did basically a Doors reunion playing strictly Doors turns and toured together for a little while under the name “Manzarek-Krieger” and sometimes “Ray Manzarek and Robby Krieger of the Doors”. Rather than just “The Doors”.Dead and Company is the same thing. Rather than reforming the Grateful Dead and touring under that name, Weir, Kreutzmann, and Hart formed Dead and Co. Queen is the same way with their whole “Queen + Adam Lambert”. Pantera should do something similar to those three. I feel like that would be a good way to pay homage to Vinnie and Dimebag, as well as maybe make it a little easier for fans to accept. Instead of being Pantera without Vinnie and Dimebag, it’s a new Anselmo and Brown offshoot band that’s playing Pantera songs

My biggest issue with this is that I don't think Phil has the voice that could sing anything close that would be listenable. Even if the rest of the band played songs perfectly, I think he's long gone from any decent singing, with all due respect. He destroyed his voice with booze, drugs, screaming, health issues, etc. I mean, he's trying, but nowadays everything is kinda just screaming, and it's not very good, a lot of struggling. There's no way he could sing anything melodic. I mean, who knows, maybe he proves me wrong but for the last 10+ years everything I heard from him was not so good, I mean vocally.

The last couple years I've seen on TH-cam he hasn't sounded very good singing Pantera and the guitars had to be tuned a full step down

Couldn’t agree more. One off Tour, bill it as a tribute to Pantera, Tribute to Dime and Vinny. AND THATS IT. Anything more, my eye brows start raising. I agree the way they announced it and the timing is suspect. But I can get down with it if they start billing it as a Tribute or Celebration, and not just Pantera back on tour.
Edit: also NOT using the Pantera name for the tour. Also just classic material, NO BRAND NEW MATERIAL with Pantera name, if they do go with that ( which I ABSOLUTELY HOPE THEY DON’T). The Abbot brothers started that band, and knowing how Dime and Vinny felt toward Phil and Rex not wanting to go one as Pantera and do their own thing, when Dime and Vinny’s heart were still in it, would be a slap in the face.

good rant, and as with any reunion as of the last how many years now already, with bands that has logo's that many people love sooo much that it's validates it, apparently, because when you look around all the reformed bands from the golden days of metal/hard rock as in the 70's & 80's, and regardless to all the fallen ones, which happens more and more to everyone these days, usually by the real virus; namely cancer, but the point is as with this "reunion" as with soo many other ones with THAT logo, many of the are mere TRIBUTE bands for crying out loud, but do people care about that, i''ll give an example, a couple of weeks ago Omen played here in Oslo, with original guitarist Kenny Powell and with a line up that has been with the band since 2017, NOW , if let's say i or anyone knew how Kenny looked like today, sporting his mohawk, which is cool, and they didn't have the Omen banner in the background, how many would know that they where seeing wasn't a tribute band? which i call Omen today, and many other bands too, and it's usually those semi cult or really obscure or has been bands, that has 2 main members that can under NO circumstances be in the same band anymore, so hence 2 versions of the same band, oh great, how's that for integrity, huh? love for the music, is it? BAH , now i've seen this happen for decades know, and i do NOT believe anymore when ANY band will claim, this is our final tour, right, sure....well, prove it then! and as for these feeble attempts at making a comeback or a tribute by USING the band name/logo or BRAND is a better word for it, now, Pantera were never my kind of band, to put it polite, but that's not the point either, it's just another, here we go again, now i'm guessing Kerry King might be the guitarist, as there's been rumours that, since Mr King REALLY wants to continue with Slayer as he has admitted that he really regretted or more to the point, wanted to keep Slayer going, and i will NOT be surprised if he would some day soon anyhow, and there was talk of Anselmo doing a project together, now that could be just a project in it self of course, but either way, if Kerry were to be the guitarist in "Pantera" or if Anselmo would join Kerry in a "Slayer" reunion, i woul NOT be surprised, but more importantly i wouldn't care even how much i love old Slayer

I only saw Pantera once and it was on the same tour in 99. When I heard the news last night, I was thrilled. Dime's girlfriend seems to be on board with the idea. I texted my friends in NY this morning and tried to gauge their responses. I got a lot of positive responses so far. I am with Pete on this one. I would fly to NY to see their show honoring Dime and Vinnie. I do not, however, agree with making more albums without the brothers; it will not be Pantera in my opinion. Let them do a blistering set with Zakk and Charlie, and put Pantera to rest.

As long as it's a tribute tour, I'm fine with using the Pantera name. There are younger folks who never got the chance to see Pantera back in the day. They've only heard the stories or seen videos, and all of that does not do justice to how much a force of nature that band was on stage. So yes, let us celebrate this legendary band and give the kids a taste. But anything beyond a tribute tour should be called something else, because it won't be Pantera.
When the Thin Lizzy tribute band decided to make new music together, they had the decency to call it Black Star Riders, and it was awesome.

Pantera's first official concert was on February 12, 1981 and their last official concert was on August 26, 2001 (20.5 years of touring). Throughout those 20+ years, Dimebag and Vinnie were present. Without Dimebag or Vinnie, I just don't see it happening. I think we should just preserve their 20-year career as we remember it (1981-2001) and not try and resurrect something without 2 key players that weren't only pivotal in the bands sound, but ESSENTIAL in creating and playing it.

Like many others have said already, Rex and Phil working together, no issues. But if this tour is a "Pantera reunion"... then we've technically been getting these reunions for years with Phil's band Down.
Also, it's been well documented that Dime and Vinny wanted nothing to do with Phil and were on record saying they'd never reunite with him. Seems like this is also a slap in the face to the brother's wishes too.
However, I never got to see any of the members of Pantera play their songs live so, even though this seems a bit odd, I'd likely go check out the show any way just out of curiosity. Maybe that's what Phil and Rex are banking on?

I'm good with the idea of a Pantera tribute tour with Zak and other special guests in honour of the band but it can't be called a Pantera tour. Dimebag was the heart and soul of Pantera and he is not replaceable. It would be like Fates Warning without Jim Matheos or Nightwish without Tuomas Holopainen. It just can't work. Dimebag was like EVH or Randy Rhoads; his playing was so distinctive and overflowing with his own personality that anything else would be a pale comparison (regardless of how great a player anyone else would be).

I say if Phil and Rex wanna do this, great. Name it something from a Pantera song: Flood, Walk, Cemetary Gates -F**king Hostile -whatever but do NOT call it Pantera nor a reunion. It would NOT be Pantera. Pantera the band WAS both Abbott brothers TOGETHER. They formed the nucleus of Pantera and the core sound. This is not to say Phil wasn't the best vocalist the band had nor Rex a solid and grounded bass player, sorta like what Cliff Williams is to AC/DC. And if they wanna get Zakk and Charlie or others, fine. But no guitarist, not even an accomplished studio musician could recreate Dime's sound because it wasn't merely Dime's equipment that produced his iconic sound: it was his feel on the instrument -it was him. Vinnie, yeah you could get away with it a bit more but he still had a very unique sound and feel to his playing. You cannot match either brother in that. They are UNIQUE. Take Alex Van Halen, who plays like no other drummer on the planet. He has a unique sense of portion and feel in the way he put his beats and sounds together. He and Eddie also fed off each other's vibe when playing. So, going back to the Abbott brothers, Vinnie FED off Dime and Dime off Vinnie. They could feel what each was gonna do. They had that sense. They were unique, one of a kind. As a few other commentators stated: this would not be Pantera. Name it after a favored Pantera song (like I stated above), and do it as a tribute to Dime and Vinnie. But do NOT call it Pantera. Pantera, the band, was disbanded by its owners the Abbott brothers when it fell apart and died with Dime and then, sadly, Vinnie. Calling this a "Pantera" reunion is doing a disservice to the name as well as the Abbott brothers.

If it does happen they will make money for sure. We can discuss and give our opinions all day long but they will make their money. Phil has alot of fans. He is the main attraction and of course still the voice of Pantera. Hopefully if it does happen it would only be for one tour. For years after Dimebag died I always thought that Zakk Wylde would be the best option to play guitar if there was ever a reunion. But I used to think that before Vinnie died.
