  • I've decided to do something different for the M3. I'm going to use Gyeon CanCoat to test it out because I'm just not quite ready to coat the car. Application is fairly straightforward which is nice, but it's hard to see where you're applying it. As always, preparation is key to help with longevity.

    I just applied Cancoat a few weeks back. Application was super easy. Used the towel for the first coat, let cure for one hour. I then used a microfiber applicator for the second coat and I liked that better. It felt like I was getting better coverage using a back and forth application like applying a traditional coating. I really like the product but your right, it didn’t wow me for a much different look. I let the 2 coats be until the first wash. After the first wash I’m using Bead Maker as a topper. The water beading action is unbelievable, that first wash was crazy. Now with the Bead maker topper it’s not much different. I’m enjoying the combo. It’s on my daily driver and I like to try different things or touch up with a light polish maybe every 6 months, so this fit the bill. Please follow up with your thoughts during a wash and talk.

    The can coat does look better after it has properly cured. Without a shadow of a doubt.
    But add about 25% onto Gyeon's claimed full cure time. At least in the UK anyway.
    If you want to top it aswell, I'd highly recommend a coat of Tac Systems Shinee Wax!
    Man it REALLY shines!
    The only other thing I've seen give so much depth and clarity was Swissvax Concorso personally.

    I have had great results with gyeon mohs and gyeon pure, I would say those products have a very similar finish and feel to CSL paired with Exo ( have used all 3 coatings I am mentioning here). I dont think I would spend the time to apply something like cancoat when it lacks many of the properties I would be looking for if I took the time to polish and prep for a coating.

    I applied can coat to about 1/2 a dozen cars and I still have enough in the bottle to do one more. One car has been going for 6 months and show no signs of coating failure yet. Super easy to apply with one microfiber towel. Just wipe on, flip and wipe off. I did get a few high spots - they are hard to see initially. I think it would be better to do it as you are, with one applicator towel and a removal towel. I just hate wasting towels as they need to be thrown away after can coat usage.

      @@ObsessedGarage From a time perspective if you are being very cautious in terms of how big of an area you apply it to then I can see why you'd say a "proper coat" would go on almost as quick, however I still feel that the product is far less daunting and forgiving for your average weekend warrior than someone who has the benefit of tons of experience with full fat coatings. That's my take as one of those weekend warriors, but perhaps I haven't spent enough time with some of the more forgiving coatings.
      P.S. I found the effect of the coating most noticeable, visually, after 2 coats (4 hours between them) and an overnight cure.

    That’s how Gyeon products work Matt - Same with Gyeon Cure Spray Sealant . You can’t visually see how much product you’re putting on - it isn’t visible - but LESS is more with Gyeon. 1-2 sprays into a microfibre towel will cover an entire large panel. No need to be splitting up door panels into 3’s.

    • @ObsessedGarage
      @ObsessedGarage  4 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @antonyv8171
      @antonyv8171 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Obsessed Garage why do you need to physically see the product going on to know it’s protecting? If a product like Gyeon Cure is so concentrated, you don’t need to apply tonnes to take effect, little goes a long way and provides great protection on top of your existing coating. But if you’re the dude who needs to see it going on, then yeah go ham with bead maker and spray the crap out of it on your panels directly and buff it in all if that gives u peace of mind!

    I tried to explain to a few people that coatings and sealants all need to have a good tactile experience for me to like it...it's just a personal preference. • @ObsessedGarage
      @ObsessedGarage  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I feel like this stuff is 100% about water behavior. There was zero change in the look of the paint and it certainly was only leaving a trace amount of SiO2 that will simply change the contact angle. That doesn't always lead to protection.

    • @junctionautosalon
      @junctionautosalon 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I never thought of it like that. I've been testing consumer/retail level "ceramics" on my cars and run into this issue often. CSL + EXO feels soft, supple and very slick (well after EXO has sat to cure for a day lol) and even the addition of C2V3 still adds to the gloss and slickness. The retail level stuff leaves a LOT to be desired for a tactile experience but the water behavior seems to be ok.

Can coat is just to protect the paint. Wax does not protect the paint- This is something that has caused lots of confusion with people thinking Wax is somehow protecting there paint. No gyeon's version of reload or c2v3 is gyeon cure.
      Can coat is a standalone lsp product, that is a light ceramic as such, but i believe you can use it as a topper to the gyeons full blown ceramic coatings.

      Probably the slickest and most hydrophobic coating I've seen but some people see it not last a year. I had it on my car for 18 months, no problems. I did get a few water spots on hood/roof but I think any coating is prone to water spotting if you don't wash/dry the vehicle quick enough after a rain on a dirty car.

      @@bosoares let's be clear though, "water spots" from rain are not the kind of "water spots" we normally talk about-those from tap water minerals. Maybe calling them rain spots would better differentiate.

      Interesting comparison. Seems that curing time is 48 hours in his experience - I think that's what he said; can't help thinking that maybe the microfibre you're using Matt absorbs the product and pull it off the paint? Maybe the suede applicator slides the product onto the paint and more of it stays there? Perhaps the rapidity of the on and off experienced with just the microfibre(s) indicates that most of the product has come off? Also surely the low price of the CanCoat is a factor versus more difficult to apply alternatives - there must be a trade-off somehwere. As Matt says, perhaps good for a short term defence against the elements...

    • @ObsessedGarage
      @ObsessedGarage  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I don't think it would make much sense to apply this with an applicator. You might as well just coat the car with a resin based coating.

      Obsessed Garage if you could get closer to a year with good maintenance, I think this would appeal to a lot of people who might not want a 2 year plus coating so the time invested would be worth it. Personally I’ve gone for CarPro Lite since April and am happy so far.

    You don't 'gain' anything from appyling a coating to a well polished car. Typically you lose gloss so in that respect if you are not noticing any difference from applying the cancoat, that's a good thing.
    Can I suggest you try being a little more enthusiastic as well, never seen someone moan so much during a detailing video.

      Well gloss meters seem to say differently & also consistent in those results. I'll take a scientific approach over guessing via the biased human eye every day of the week. Also I would advise applying via a proper ceramic applicator & suede cloth. You'll be shocked with the difference that makes to the end results with regards to durability & hydrophobicity.
      You can't help personality so I'll let you off with that 😅

    • @ObsessedGarage
      @ObsessedGarage  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gloss meters are terribly inaccurate. I see people using a $200 gloss meter and taking that as the way. I wanted one badly until spending time with a Rhopoint. I found it almost useless and extremely inaccurate.

    • @BrianW1612
      @BrianW1612 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ObsessedGarage seems pretty consistent when others are using decent ones from what I've seen. Consistent results from average readings. Each to their own mate, don't write off Cancoat too early though. It's a proper lite ceramic & will become slick on curing. I would recommend ditching the towel though & using a suede applicator on a foam block as once the product sets it will be hard & make the MF unusable for paintwork.
