Drove a couple of hundred Km’s in a rental one of these, this week. Awful weather but the RAV4 made it seem very easy and comfortable. My only real grip was the gearbox which made the engine soar to over 4000 revs while delivering no real power up steep hills.
I love my 2021 Rav4. I primarily use it just for going around town and it serves me very well. One thing I dont like about it though is how it corners. Now, it may be just me still needing to get used to an SUV over my previous Solara which was highly aggressive in the corners, but the Rav4 does seem to throw me around a little in the corners. Its certainly not a deal breaker for me and everything else I have loved with my Rav4. It has everything I need. It has probably a dozen or so more features on it than I'll ever need, and its rather cute looking.
Always a RAV4 Hybrid over any Mazda CX-5. Drove 2 weeks in a petrol CX-5 AWD, RAV4 drives so much smoother, day and night difference. RAV4 over CX-5, no doubt. I'm still very happy with mij 2016 RAV4 AWD.
One thing not mentioned in the video relates to the tires. We have a first gen 2019 FWD Rav 4 and no one told us to rotate the tires front to back. Fifteen thousand km's later there was a significant humming sound coming from the rear of the car. We thought the wheel bearings were gone, turns out because it is FWD you have to rotate the tires every 10,000 kms to avoid something called cupping or scalloping. Other than that the car is super reliable and a joy to drive. We love it.
That indicates a suspension issue, not a tyre issue it's common on all FWD Toyota's. The rear suspension is rubbish. You should rotate your tyres on every car at 5000k's all said and done if you want to get the best life from your tyres.
I know someone who has a Tiguan. Nothing but problems. Honda has a big recall a CV transmission and a 1.5 liter turbo, sublect to blowing head gaskets.
Friend of mine has A 2007 Rav with 230,000 kms - it just never stops working.! Engine is noisy but apparently is normal for age/mileage - dull as dishwater overall,
Nice review! My grandpa bought the hybrid new in 2019 and hes loving it. Nice to hear the safety section in my other mother tounge ;). Would like to see a review on three off my favorite cars in the future: 2019+ Audi A6 Allroad, 2019+ Audi A7 and 2008+ Audi R8 manual. Cheers mate.
Adam a great review as always however When describing wear & tear anything with under 150,000kms should have negligible wear & tear. 40,000k’s is nothing for a modern car. Wouldn’t even bother mentioning the Ks as it all comes down to how the owner treats their car.
Well my mother has been looking at buying one new...now I can rest a little better knowing she is getting something that should see out her driving days reliably....
If you stick to the service logbook, it will last 20 years and 300,000 kms with nothing but replacing consumables and maybe a starter motor and alternator both of which are cheap fixes. Toyota owners purchase for the long term and forgo the fancy bells and whistles that would be outdated 5 years later.
I had one as a hire car earlier in the year, very nice car, easy to drive. I was shocked by the infotainment though, the screen is as bad as my 10 year old Commodore. Toyota taking the piss there.
as a toyota enjoyer and defender, i have to agree there. Yes, simpler infotainment systems are way more reliable long term but they coulve at least tried to increase user friendliness. The one in my 86 (shared with ~2012-2014 corollas) is very laggy and has a resistive touch screen straight from the early 00s you need to basically punch your finger to press any buttons
I’d really be keen to buy the plug in hybrid version of these as an import. There’s a few kicking around on the market, that feels like the perfect ‘car’ these days. Enough battery to drive round town on electric but the engine to cope with the occasional trip into the country.
I love the RAV4 it's a very reliable, durable and strong vehicle. I'm from the Caribbean and the RAV4's in my country Trinidad and Tobago( T&T) 🇹🇹. They come from Toyota in Japan so they are of excellent quality. 👍👍🙂
Nice looking car but looks like it's definitely suffering from the Toyota tax. Good to know that this is a reliable car as know someone whos looking at potentially buying one. Good job as always guys and look forward to Sunday's video as per usual 👍.
The good thing about the Toyota Tax is you get a nice little Tax return when you sell it. I do love me a euro car but its always good to have at least one Toyota in the family
1:22 did he say manual? BTW, the RAV4 hybrid does *not* have a CVT in the actual sense, it's a planetary gear set that powers the hybrid and RAV4 Prime. The auto industry just calls it an e-CVT for lack of a better name.
I just googled it and RAV-4's in Australia had a manual transmission option, at least up until recently. They might still come with a manual option but I wouldn't know as I didn't bother to research it further.
base GX trim FWD models were available in manual until MY2020 but not anymore. They also depreciated the most out of all RAV4 variants not because of decreased reliability or parts avaiability but purely because of low demand. They are a great deal to buy used imo because you somewhat dodge toyota tax whilst retaining all the benefits of paying said tax and toyota's cvt (only toyota does this) has a separate first gear for taking off to ease wear and tear because a cvt's point of failure is the fragility of the transmission and getting a car moving from standstill requires the most force.
@eugenewang4650 you couldn't even get a manual transmission in North America after the 2005 model year (last year of the second generation). Which is why I was surprised that he mentioned that this 5th generation had a manual transmission.
Even considering the higher cost on hybrid, part of why I love the Hybrid and PHEV is I just REALLY dislike going to the gas station. The more I can avoid that the better!
We drove a 10,000 km demonstration one 2 years ago and were surprised how many rattles it had. Were disappointed. Ended up buying a new Subaru Forester which has now done 35,000 kms and is excellent.
18:11 Cable gate is a real problem in some countries and is very expensive to fix, but the newer cars have the plastic cover modified in a way that it doesn't collect dust and moisture, anyway Toyota relax warranty should cover that, if do regular service with Toyota then you are covedred, Toyota Relax - up to 10 years (100000 miles) Toyota warranty.
Yes the RAV 4 is a good thing, however, the used cost is about the same as a similar Lexus NX, which is much more refined to drive. So before you pull the RAV pin check the NX options.
We own a 2019 AWD GXL Hybrid and has travelled about 61k Kms. Only problem we had was the 12v battery dying after a week of not driving the car. But it's an easy fix with a Noco Smart charger from Supercheap.
I just bought one of these today. A 2022 XLE (USA) with 60,000 miles for $25,000. I think it is probably the same trim level as the Edge in Australia. I have not figured out where it was built yet but my guess is probably here in the United States. I sincerely hope it is up to it's reputation.
If there's any one thing I'd personally like to see in any of your car reviews in the practicality section its baby seat size/room behind the driver in your driving position and potentially a generic sized pram to fot in the boots space but these really apply to small to medium SUVs classes and up. Not that you can't use almost any car for baby purposes but for some people who are space conscious but can't visualise I think it would be a worthwhile viewpoint even if the car seat was maybe a Booster.
When I saw the restyled 2019 I did not like it. I don't like a "chiseled" look but the 2018 to me had a more "elegant" and smooth styling. Just a personal preference. I also don't like direct injected engines that started on the '19 models. So we went looking for a new 2018 RAV4 XLE hybrid with a CVT. Found one new with upgraded stereo and navigation and I like the in dash display and don't like those stick up screens. I also wanted the old reliable 2.5L port injected engine. Bought a few accessories and off we went. The BEST vehicle we ever owned. We own a vacation condo and I can make the 400 mile trip on a FULL tank. If looking used I would not rule out a 2018 or last generation model with good miles and a good service history. The reason I tell you this is that the previous generation may be a real good value. Maintenance tip: I did not know the RAV4 hybrids have a 12volt battery under the cargo tray in the back. Toyota changed it for me at about 380US dollars. The dealer service mgr said he recommends a 5 year change. I don;t know if it is a special 12V for hybrids but he had to order a Toyota battery.
May I add to my comments above. On my '18 I love the shifter with the indent as I can see and know the gear I am in and also love the pull up emergency brake. I am "old school" for sure as I grew up on a farm and know old school stuff.
Jim, i love the Mercedes W126 behind you. It’s the best Mercedes ever made. I own a 1990 300 sel. It was the time where Mercedes were as reliable as Toyotas and Lexus today.
I manage to get hold of second hand Adventure from Japan in NZ. 2021 model. It drives like a dream. As you mentioned it’s not a Land Cruiser but the off road capability is solid. It can do 80% of what a good off road SUV does. This is coming from someone who had Pajero Sports for 6 year. The sport mode. E-CVT and hybrid engine makes this trim decently fun and capable. So if you are in Oz try to get the Edge model directly from dealer or auction site in Japan. It’s soo much better than GLX model. Hope this help and ReDriven tests this model.
These cars failed the moose test early in its life cycle. If you’re buying an early model of this generation, check it’s had an update to the esc so that it handles appropriately in a moose test situation
I really love the look of these for an suv especially in that dark red colour!!! My only complaint is that badge demands such a premium price however resale value is awesome
I've watched many of your videos, and they've been incredibly helpful in guiding my purchasing decisions. I love Lexus for its luxury, but I'm also interested in Infiniti, specifically the FX model. I haven't seen any videos on Infiniti vehicles yet and would love to see one.
I own a stock 2015 PC Mitsubishi Challenger Wagon 4x4. Have not seen one on the show. I live near Liverpool NSW and am happy to lend it to the boys at Redriven... would be nice to see it on the show. Not many people have these anymore...
Don't buy it if you can't afford two at the same time. If you can afford to buy two at the same time you still just buy one and keep the rest for maintenance and repairs.
RAV4's are highly stolen in the UK and they also have parts stolen very easily. Thieves love them because they can be broken into and driven away in under a minute. I nearly bought a RAV4 but the insurance was 3 times higher than it's competition. I ended up downsizing and getting a Bi-Tone solar yellow Suzuki Vitara SZ5 Allgrip. I love it 😀
@flavio17021979 funnily enough i was looking at them too 😂 I actually think I prefer that gen overall anyway. Only issue I had was they were still the same price as a nearly new Vitara. I took me months to decide. I've had so many Toyotas over the years but never had a Suzuki, so I decided Suzuki that way 😉 both great cars in their respective fields
This definitely should have been in this video. Apparently they can hack into the CANBUS system through the front headlight wiring and steal it that way without any need for the key being in the vicinity.
Seems to be a very common issue these days. I’ve seen many reviews of luxury cars and the stitching/upholstery is terrible… and that’s noticeable from watching a video😬
The Canadian made Rav 4 is far better than others. My 2020 hybrid Rav 4 gets amazing fuel economy..my local mechanic hates it..because nothing goes wrong.

Another important note: The first year of production for any new generation Toyota is typically plagued with a few, but really annoying design problems that are duly fixed in the following production years. The uptake: STAY AWAY FROM 2019 RAV4'S ! This goes for every first production year of new generation models.
Fantastic car, although my 2020 GXL AWD Hybrid seats (both passenger and driver) have splits & rips. I'm 80 kilos, so there's no way it can be a weight issue. I've also only done 50,000 kms, so hardly excessive use. Toyota refused to replace/repair under warranty. I don't think I'll buy another Toyota because of this experience.
I’m curious to hear from any Mazda CX-3/CX-5 owners that have had airbag deployment under non-serious conditions… like hitting a curb hard or extremely minor side impact??
They aren’t what they once were. The CVT sucks and the auto on/off start at lights is on of the roughest I’ve experienced. I’d have to buy the hybrid model to avoid the rough auto start at lights but it still has the damn CVT
I love how you talk about coffee and the big ones being disgusting. We live in NZ, so really appreciate coffee, visited the states last year, some people had coffees that were bigger than their head, that's not a coffee, that's just no
Had the displeasure of having 1 of these for 6 weeks for insurance. 6.0l per 100ks for a hybrid is atrocious (I was getting 9.7 from my BMW 5series) under powered, horrible driving position, feels like a 90's Mazda inside
Kind of comparing apples to oranges but i do agree with the whole hybrid thing - they dont save enough money to warrant the upfront cost. Id buy a bmw for performance, toyota for reliability for going to get groceries Higher trim toyotas do actually get quite nice inside, much closer to bmw levels of luxury. I do wish we had more colour options though. Every car is just silver and black inside, its just boring.
@@TheSilentStrykeit was a 20yr old BMW and I would have thought that Toyota would have brought their drive pleasure up by now, still felt like a 90's car not a $60grand car
I used to have a 2020 RAV 4 GX Hybrid, and clocked over 100,000km in the time I had it (over 3 years) Sure it was reliable, efficient and not too bad to maintain (except for a new windscreen which was over $1000), however the handling and suspension in general was just horrible, as the car would lean into corners and bounce around like a 300,000km Commodore with flogged suspension, and this was throughout my time with this car... I'm not sure if higher trim levels are any different with this, but I believe they're the same... Otherwise, it performs like every other SUV on the road... It's not very fast or fun to drive which is to be expected for a car in this category... The takeaway from my comment is that the RAV4 will satisfy your needs, if you don't care too much about the horrible suspension, which rears its ugly head when taking sharper corners (including roundabouts) and somewhat rougher roads... Oh, and I forgot about the constant beeps and bongs, but I believe this can be switched off...

2. minimal but irritating rattle sound from drivers side door or b pillar (still couldn't find from exactly where it is )
3. infotainment sytem touch doesn't work some times, need to restart the car to make it work.
unfortunately dealer can't find the reason for any of this
I like cars, but I’m a pragmatist. I bought a 2023 Cruiser hybrid, it did cost a fortune but it’s efficient, it’s fantastic. I love it.
Drove a couple of hundred Km’s in a rental one of these, this week. Awful weather but the RAV4 made it seem very easy and comfortable. My only real grip was the gearbox which made the engine soar to over 4000 revs while delivering no real power up steep hills.
I've noticed similar on my Rav4. On hills it really does need a lot of RPMs, more than I would have thought it needed.
I am thinking between the two aparently is a 2025 Mazda cx50 hybrid and the engine is a Toyota hybrid
We love it.
Did you not have toyotacare ? Did yours not come with an owners/ maintenance manual? IIts all outlined in there .
That indicates a suspension issue, not a tyre issue it's common on all FWD Toyota's. The rear suspension is rubbish.
You should rotate your tyres on every car at 5000k's all said and done if you want to get the best life from your tyres.
If you're not changing the tyres front to back, you're not rotating the tyres.
Lesson learned - Toyota - Made in Japan. Real car enthusiasts know this formula.
@@hughgreen7826 those Made in Thailand Toyotas are pretty good as well.
no car enthusiast would buy rav4😂
@@bockerstar As a daily for their SO they would indeed.

I know someone who has a Tiguan. Nothing but problems. Honda has a big recall a CV transmission and a 1.5 liter turbo, sublect to blowing head gaskets.
forgot to mention the all the new hondas got recalled as well as having fuel line leaking and steering column issues
Cheers mate.
remember most rav4's are still under the 5 year unlimited klm warranty if serviced properly
10 years ago I would never thought that most car problems cars have will solved with software updates lol😂
This has been updated in the newer models
as a toyota enjoyer and defender, i have to agree there.
Yep, some came as a manual
@@damilolaakanni yeah. I also have a Subaru Crosstrek with CVT and the eCVT on the RAV4 is leaps and bounds better
They are a great deal to buy used imo because you somewhat dodge toyota tax whilst retaining all the benefits of paying said tax
and toyota's cvt (only toyota does this) has a separate first gear for taking off to ease wear and tear because a cvt's point of failure is the fragility of the transmission and getting a car moving from standstill requires the most force.
@eugenewang4650 you couldn't even get a manual transmission in North America after the 2005 model year (last year of the second generation). Which is why I was surprised that he mentioned that this 5th generation had a manual transmission.
Love our dynamic Rav4 hybrid 4 years old now and runs like new never had any issues
Even considering the higher cost on hybrid, part of why I love the Hybrid and PHEV is I just REALLY dislike going to the gas station. The more I can avoid that the better!
The biggest issue is driving in the night time, the passengers could not find the window button and the door lever.
That big Merc behind Jim looks like quite a catch! Is that a W126 S-class?
We drove a 10,000 km demonstration one 2 years ago and were surprised how many rattles it had. Were disappointed. Ended up buying a new Subaru Forester which has now done 35,000 kms and is excellent.
You should google Redriven Subaru forester.
Can’t beat the rav for overall practicality though
18:11 Cable gate is a real problem in some countries and is very expensive to fix, but the newer cars have the plastic cover modified in a way that it doesn't collect dust and moisture, anyway Toyota relax warranty should cover that, if do regular service with Toyota then you are covedred, Toyota Relax - up to 10 years (100000 miles) Toyota warranty.
Yes the RAV 4 is a good thing, however, the used cost is about the same as a similar Lexus NX, which is much more refined to drive. So before you pull the RAV pin check the NX options.
Exaaactly. I bought a 2019 NX AWD Hybrid instead of a Rav4 2024 FWD non-hybrid, and I'm so glad I did.
We own a 2019 AWD GXL Hybrid and has travelled about 61k Kms. Only problem we had was the 12v battery dying after a week of not driving the car. But it's an easy fix with a Noco Smart charger from Supercheap.
My 2019 just started a loose left mirror. The actual glass vibrates
Please do a review on a used GWM Haval H6 hybrid.
This is a very good suggestion! Let's hope Jim sees this.
Would like to see you turn into right hand corners correctly - no corner cutting -.
Taking the racing line is just part of my DNA sorry mate. - AK
That does it! I’m trading my RAV for a CX5 this week!
And I’m adding Wipertech!
So what you're saying in I shouldn't trade my 2021 GXL hybrid for a 2018 Volvo XC90?
Great vid. Can you do a review on Gen 4?
I used to have a GX AWD for my work vehicle, only thing about the job that I miss!! 😂😂😂
It’s not legal to import the model directly from Japan in Australia. Only a very limited range of vehicles can be grey imported.
The blue Commodore ute is gone!
Went with the CX5, saved $15-$20k Toyota tax and a much nicer drive!
These cars failed the moose test early in its life cycle. If you’re buying an early model of this generation, check it’s had an update to the esc so that it handles appropriately in a moose test situation
No moose in my country
The Edge model also has a torque converter auto not a diabolical CVT time bomb
Toyota CVTs are fine so don’t need to exaggerate reliability issues. The edge has a TC pre-facelift but have a hybrid (CVT) option post
This isn't a belt type cvt. It's a planetary geared combined with an electric motors. Very reliable.
They're good but I'd probably prefer a CX-5 Gen 2 coz they drive better.
I own a stock 2015 PC Mitsubishi Challenger Wagon 4x4. Have not seen one on the show. I live near Liverpool NSW and am happy to lend it to the boys at Redriven... would be nice to see it on the show. Not many people have these anymore...
Michael yes yes yes!!! How can we get in touch with you regarding this? Can you message ReDriven via FB or Insta at all??
Can you guys do vw touareg 2019 onwards model please
Don't buy it if you can't afford two at the same time. If you can afford to buy two at the same time you still just buy one and keep the rest for maintenance and repairs.
RAV4's are highly stolen in the UK and they also have parts stolen very easily. Thieves love them because they can be broken into and driven away in under a minute. I nearly bought a RAV4 but the insurance was 3 times higher than it's competition. I ended up downsizing and getting a Bi-Tone solar yellow Suzuki Vitara SZ5 Allgrip. I love it 😀
I decided to go for mk4 2016 2.5 hybrid awd instead of 2020 because any fuel savings will be eaten by insurance sky high premiums 😕
@@mitchreeves1How's the Suzuki in comparison when it comes to Noise, Vibrations and Harshness?
This definitely should have been in this video. Apparently they can hack into the CANBUS system through the front headlight wiring and steal it that way without any need for the key being in the vicinity.
The canbus hack applies to standard hybrids - and later versions have been updated to avoid theft. PHEVs were and are still not affected.
What mid SUVs are good capable 4x4?
Couldn’t help but notice the stitching on the drivers seat looked mehe too.
Seems to be a very common issue these days. I’ve seen many reviews of luxury cars and the stitching/upholstery is terrible… and that’s noticeable from watching a video😬
Good Review , that's why I bought the Hybrid edge.
The Canadian made Rav 4 is far better than others. My 2020 hybrid Rav 4 gets amazing fuel economy..my local mechanic hates it..because nothing goes wrong.
I ordered my rav4 awd hybrid cruiser in Nov 2023, I just got an email that the car has gone into production. I wonder how until I take delivery. The dealership wasn't able to confirm this.
I was in this situation. I gave up and they gave me the refund, so I bought a used 2019 NX, it's a rav4 but much better. So happy with it

Another important note: The first year of production for any new generation Toyota is typically plagued with a few, but really annoying design problems that are duly fixed in the following production years. The uptake: STAY AWAY FROM 2019 RAV4'S ! This goes for every first production year of new generation models.
Need to do a vid for the VW Arteon 2017-2019 R line

Hey mate I would grab a RAV4 over CX-5!
I’ve got a 2019 Edge AWD, they weren’t hybrid then. I didn’t want a hybrid anyway. I love this car.
I’m curious to hear from any Mazda CX-3/CX-5 owners that have had airbag deployment under non-serious conditions… like hitting a curb hard or extremely minor side impact??

Easy. A Subaru Forester AWD every day.
The 2019 adventure is a better vehicle than a 2020 Ford Ranger
if it had a higher towing capacity (for example 2000kg) it would be the perfect SUV. CX5 has an advantage about this.

Haha glitchy infotainment, just shuts down while driving multiple times
Kind of comparing apples to oranges but i do agree with the whole hybrid thing - they dont save enough money to warrant the upfront cost.
Id buy a bmw for performance, toyota for reliability for going to get groceries
Higher trim toyotas do actually get quite nice inside, much closer to bmw levels of luxury. I do wish we had more colour options though. Every car is just silver and black inside, its just boring.
@@TheSilentStrykeit was a 20yr old BMW and I would have thought that Toyota would have brought their drive pleasure up by now, still felt like a 90's car not a $60grand car
The only problem I see is the steering wheel is on the right side.
I used to have a 2020 RAV 4 GX Hybrid, and clocked over 100,000km in the time I had it (over 3 years)
Sure it was reliable, efficient and not too bad to maintain (except for a new windscreen which was over $1000), however the handling and suspension in general was just horrible, as the car would lean into corners and bounce around like a 300,000km Commodore with flogged suspension, and this was throughout my time with this car...
I don't think soccer moms care about that
