If you take anything away from this video it's never buy the first year of a redesigned vehicle .... My 2021 RAV4 has been flawless . None of the issues stated in this video .
This morning I saw on TH-cam a new video from CBC "Toyota recalling 100,000 vehicles in Canada for airbag defect" Luckily my RAV4 2022 was not in the list but 2020-21 was. I checked to see if this is only Canadian problem but found another TH-cam videos from a U.S. TV channel posted 1 hour ago with title "Toyota recalling 1M vehicles for potential air bag problem" but they didn't specify a list with specific vehicles
I bought a 2019 version of this, had it for almost 4 years, 7500 miles in got into a bad accident, it ended up getting repaired incorrectly. I ended up having to sell it way before I wanted to.
95k miles on my wife’s 2020 rav (canadian). -oil & filter change (0w-16) every 5k miles. -did the spark plugs and brake pads at 80k. -did transmission fluid at 50k, doing it at 100k again. -original battery failed at 30k. -bypass coolant valve failed at 90k. paid $90 for it on eBay and replaced myself. other than the bypass valve, no problems so far, is been a great car. always getting between 31-34 MPG.
Hi. You shouldn't change your transmission oil too often. When the oil is always "new" and clean and slippery, the transmission can actually have to work harder to change gears. When oil gets a little bit used, there is some grime etc. that occurs, and that adds grip for the transmission. Bravo on being diligent with your maintenance, but 60,000 miles / 100,000 kms is a terrific interval. You hit the sweet spot of "just dirty enough to help from 30,000 miles - 60,000 miles / 50,000 kms - 100,000 kms, but the oil and additives aren't worn out, and there is still lubrication and cooling properties". I just thought I would tell you.
I own a Rav4 2021 AWD gas engine., 65k miles. Oil change every 5k miles, still original tires; front brakes just done; 3 years old battery replaced at 63k miles; both differential fluids replaced at 30K miles, about to change transmission oil. it does 27mpg in the city and 35 mpg in Hwy@ 75mph. To be honest, I've driven throughout 35 states with this vehicle and never had any of the issues he says in this video. This is my 4th Toyota; All of then have been trouble free and super reliable and easy to maintain.
Thank you for sharing!! As far as the issues, they are the ones I see coming in. I’m a Toyota master Technician. My wife’s vehicle has only suffered from the DCM firmware parasitic draw. I appreciate your feedback!
Hi Viking im from Portugal and i also bought a rav4 2020 but hybrid awd. I´m super happy with mine with 70000+ km. Never gave me any problem for now. keep up the good work
Great review, Paul. I stumbled across it while surfing through YT. It makes me even more confident in the purchase of our first ever Toyota, a '23 RAV4 Limited hybrid which has been flawless so far. I changed oil for the second time a couple days ago @ 4,940 miles & will take the 90 mile trip to our dealer tomorrow for it's 5K mile checkup. So far it's looking to be one of the best vehicles we've owned over the past 55 years. Keep up the great work! I just subscribed & am looking forward to more vids from you.
I own a 2022 RAV4. This is my second Toyota - I used to own a 2012 highlander, which I had for 8 years, with 0 problems. The RAV4 has low miles at 15k and has been getting oil changes less than 5k miles so far. - I have already had the roof molding fail and replaced under warranty, - The coolant keeps spilling out from the overflow reservoir - I have now taken it to the dealership 3 times and every time they inform me that they have not found any issue and top off the coolant. I have noticed that the coolant reaches the low mark every few months. - The transfer case seal failed recently and I have fluid leaking. I am yet to get that fixed because the dealership did not have the part in stock. Overall, it has not met the expectations I had from my pervious experience and I hope that I do not encounter any new major problems outside warranty.
I still have the original brakes on my 2019 RAV4 LE gas at 115k miles. They are only 20% worn. I barely use the brakes. I manually downshift and/or coast to stops. I have had zero issues. It’s literally all original except for the tires, wipers, and filters. I’ve only replaced the air filters once and they weren’t even that dirty. The original tires had broken belts at 46k miles. The noise was extremely loud. The replacement tires are still at 8/32 of an inch. They will probably last for 150k miles. I’m hoping to not have any issues before I trade up in a year or two.
Steering wheel peel ...possibly a reaction from lotion/sunscreen/hand sanitizer. Had a jeep that had exactly that type peeling and it was from sunscreen .
My 2022 RAV4 hybrid has 10k miles and has been flawless. Not built until November 2022, the mid-term refresh fixed all the problems mentioned. I love my RAV4.
I have a 2020 Rav 4 hybrid limited with most options. 50,000 miles. Mostly normal maintenance issues. The man made “leather” wears like iron. Had a couple of warranty issues-mirrors bracing was replaced and the windshield trim-all covered when under warranty. Best vehicle we’ve ever owned.
I'm looking into buying a 2020 or 2021 Rav4 have been looking into buying gas only because I'm so nervous about the cost of the Hybrid battery replacement. This video is helpful what are your thoughts on a rav4 Hybrid?
Great tips and help ! -- DCM firmware - have the latest updates --- High pressure fuel pump Customer Support Program 23TE01 --- Coolant ByPass valve common failure --- Roof rail leak into the care on certain models A lot a positive comments on the RAV4 . Peeling steering wheel cover could be due to frequent use of the heated steering wheel causing premature wear
I'm in Canada and have Toyota Avalon 95 which is now 29 years old car at over 500K km (310K miles). The steering wheel never ripped or peeled but it got badly stained mostly in the last few years because I started to use a lot of hand disinfectants, sprays and creams which I also applied directly on the steering wheel after service people used my car. Last year I bought RAV4 2022 and my first thought for add-ons was a steering wheel cover but since it's heated I'm still hesitant because it may slow down the warming. Comparing to the build of 95 Avalon when new, the 2022 RAV4 feels really cheap, everything looks much more fragile. When I shared this with my mechanic he said, now nobody will build cars to last like your 95 Avalon.
The bottom line is that modern cars are pretty complicated beasts. Being such, they WILL have some issues. As a retired master tech myself, I am surprised that they don't have more problems than they do. We own all hybrids. A 2017 Prius with 146K, a 2020 RAV4 XSE hybrid with 43K, and a 2022 Maverick hybrid with 22K. None of them have had any major issues at all. The Prius has had 1 complete set of brakes done at 73 K miles, and is on the 3rd set of tires. The RAV4 has just had the first set of tires. The only repairs I have made are normal wear and maintenance. We are keeping the Prius for now as a commuter vehicle. It is getting 61.1 MPG. The RAV4 gets 42.2, 5h3 Mav is similar at 44. In all my years I have never seen a hybrid battery in need of replacement so I have no real concerns. I did, out of curiosity, find a place that does refurbish them. They quoted just under $3K for that with a 50K mile warranty should I ever need it. I can certainly live with that. Overall I am very pleased with the service I have gotten out of all my hybrids.
Just a perspective: if you don't do an alignment every year, you will save $100+ dollars per year, so after 3-4 years of not doing alignments, you have close to enough money to buy a set of new tires. I thank you for the informative and in-depth review. I'm a subscriber now, so just know that I'm not arguing, just pointing out something that might save some people some cash, if they don't have much money to spend.
Thank you for the video. I had a 2020 RAV4 Limited but traded it in this year for a 2023 4Runner Limited. I loved my RAV4...but I absolutely love my 4Runner even more if that's possible! I do miss some of the things on the RAV4 though, like the rain sensing wipers and the power lift gate. However, a person can't go wrong with either one!
@@billricheter5678 it could be better, but then again it could be worse. City driving is 15-16 mpg and we usually get 20-21 mpg highway. Of course going from a RAV4 to a 4Runner was a big drop compared to what I was used to, but I didn't buy the 4Runner for the mpg! 😅
My mom has a 2020 rav4 xle. Not one single problem. My girlfriend has a 2022 corolla cross and I have a 2023 Tacoma sr5. Our corolla cross had an oil leak from the filter, after replacing the filter 2 times under warranty a field tech/engineer deemed the problem to be a bad casting on the upper oil pan. Dealer pulled the engine and replaced the upper oil pan. The work performed by the shop foreman is flawless. I can’t even tell anything was taken apart beside the fact that it has black fipg sealer now on all the mating surfaces instead of the assembly line grey.
I appreciate you sharing that, unfortunately every now and then you get a bad apple. What that shop foreman did is the way it should be done, I pride myself on working in a similar fashion. I appreciate you watching!!
@@VikingsGarageyes Toyota covered it no questions asked and every time I look under the hood I’m so happy the tech did the job correctly . It’s the kind of work I love seeing from fellow automotive techs. As a A tech auto body man I know what I’m looking at and I told the dealer that foreman is incredible . Even the hose clamps on everything were put back on the old marks. No one bolt loose or harness clip out of place. I love your videos and your attention to detail! Keep it up. Question though. Why does Toyota use black fipg under warranty work opppsed to the the assembly line grey? My only concern is someone who really knows what they are looking at it will see the black sealer and know the engine was taken apart . Thanks buddy! Watching your power steering flush video now lol
@trdfenz3005 I try to teach these younger kids small things like that but they ignore my advice. Rumor as it they assemble Toyota engines with Honda Bond..😅 Seriously, that’s an excellent question that I honestly don’t have an answer for. I do appreciate your support Sir!! 🙏🏻
My 2020 Rav4 XSE has a JBL radio/infotainment system. It’s stuck in a reboot mode. Dealership said this happens a lot and will be $3000 - $4000 to replace. No financial help from Toyota. I’m really disappointed with Toyota and will be looking into other brands soon.
Our 2019 has had the radio replaced, more so because the phone wasn't connecting. Otherwise, MY WIFE drives it to and from work, low miles (+31000) for being in service 4 years. Oil & filter every 5000, with tire roation, Air & Cabin filter every year. Haven't seen any of the RECALLS you mentioned, may call the dealer and find out if I they affect our 2019. Weatherproof mats - DEFINITELY! Even purchased one for the cargo area. Thanks for this info.
That steering wheel falling apart is really of concern, as they say it is "leather wrapped". I wonder if Toyota would replace that within the 3 year warranty, the so called bumper-to-bumper (except for things that normally wear out). That is not normal, I have an Acura with 150K miles after 8 years and the leather on the wheel is just fine.
I've owned my rav4 for a year now. 2023 xle premium, 22,000 miles so far.. I would like to add that the ride is kind of rough and bumpy. compared to my last vehicle (buick lacrose). Other then that, I have no complaints. It has held up well under the abuse i put it through.
Hi! Great job, excellent video. Very objective analysis from your personal experience. I am about to buy the 2024 RAV 4 XLE and I feel very confident now. Hope it will give me more happy moments than problems! Thanks a lot!
the damage on the steering wheel on the left side is common on all cars more or less that have that thin coat but is more common with married people due to the ring on the finger
That steering wheel issue is because of “bonded leather”. They used to put that crap on furniture, but they had to stop because they received too many returns because of pealing. It’s basically waste material from the manufacturing of real leather goods. It’s turned into a paste like substance so that it can then be applied on to various surfaces. That way they can call the-end product “leather”. I am very surprised Toyota resorted to applying garbage like this on their vehicles.
I have a 2015 rav with 240k have torque converter chatter at 190k did two drain and flushes and added torque coverter fix and its working fine at 240k might do another drain and fill soon. Looking forward to a 2021 or 22 in a year or so. Thanks for the review 👍
Crazy how I find myself researching a vehicle that I'm altready committed to buy! This frank review of personal experience gives me confidence in the decision I made was right. Such useful content is apptreciated.
My 2019 RAV4 Gas model had the coolant valve fail open resulting in a 'service engine' message. A $450 CAD repair out of warranty. Car has 85,000 km on it, otherwise flawless in the 4 years I've owned it. Interior rattles however are not great and have been that way since new.
Glad that Page Toyota in Michigan was 2K over msrp in 2022! My CRV has been nothing but PERFECT! No recalls etc etc.! And with my Honda I don't have to beg for a vehicle! My 05 accord runs like new and we will celebrate it's 19th Bday next june!
I bought the last model Crv with 5 speed transmission. The 2015 and up all cvt. Won’t last like the mechanical trans. Toyota still using mechanical transmission. I use bought a 23 runner TRD off road….love the set up. Plan to have it 25 years plus.
I own a rav4 hybrid , 2020 bought new. As a tall guy at 6’3’’ I do not find seats comfortable. Major problem for me has been cabin noise at freeway speeds, it’s so loud we cannot use the car for travel, just around town. MPG is the only reason I keep it as we get 40 +/-2 consistently.
Thank you for your info. The gas mileage is wonderful and a great ride. No, my steering wheel isn't like that. I did have the rail issue leaking. The dealer took care of it. I do have an issue pumping gas, though. Other than that, I LOVE MY RAV 4
These RAV4’s are great vehicles. Check with your dealer on the fueling issue, you might need a new gas tank. They redesigned it. I appreciate you sharing!!
Typical Technician Recommendations ❤ ! Precaution services rather then actual practical needs ... Uneven pads worn-out means inner pad stuck due to gliding pins seized been ignored for sometime ! Judging outter pad without removing the wheel can't tells inner were stuck that worn twice as fast or more ! Keep an eye on tire wearing conditions indicates whether alignment are in fine tune ! Needs no alignment every year, unless ran over curbing or potholes repeatingly ! All related fluids replacement are way too early ! Then again, to Some ... Better sooner then Sorry ! Overall, nice educational suggestions / precautions for those who do not do maintainance of their own ! 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
I have a 2020 Rav4 limited. I've had no problems at all. I'm going to put this out there for why the steering wheel on the left side is like that. Wedding ring. Is her ring smooth or does it have a raised edge or grooves, possibly because she wears 2 rings together on the same finger. Just a thought. Leave a comment if that applies.
She does not wear 2 rings actually, I’m pretty sure that was cause by hand sanitizer. My wife works in the medical field and has to constantly apply it.
My Toyota 2015 RAV4 steering wheel did have the same problem with peeling also. It was a disappointment that this occurred. Other than this it’s been running great!
Happens in alot of vehicles people think handsanitizer and sunscreen damage the leather but jizz and juice are the main leather irritants. Armoral wipes are great for dash steering wheel leathers
JBL sound system in our 2019 adventure. And did both diffs and T case @30k and trans fluid drain and fill 48k and mtr oil every 5k or less. all fluids amsoil. NEVER go 10k on mtr oil NEVER! diffs and T case must be changed every 30k as all wheel drive is hard on Diffs and t case gears.30+ mpg pretty easy to get . 33 is most common for my wife. dual injection is the Best.
Until recently I had a ‘16 Scion iM aka Corolla Hatchback. Came with Pioneer touchscreen stereo with volume knob - Bluetooth pairing and gracenote both developed problems but the sound quality was always great.
Hi Vikings Garage, first time here! Absolutely love the color of that car. I have a '21 R4P and sucks that color wasn't a color option when we got it. Agree with you on the floor mats, they are pretty darn good and useful. Thanks for all the fyi's to look for, very informative info. 👍 Dunno if it is the case with you but I think I have more problems with actually booking appts with Crystal/Empire more so than issues w/ the car. 😂 They are always booked solid even for a simple oil change!
@@VikingsGarage duh, just put 2 and 2 together! I’ll make sure to say “hi” next time I drop by for service! Small world! 😂. On a side note, just curious if you ever had a problem with the trunk /hatch opening? I seem to get this problem every once in a where the hatch either tries to open, beeps and just stops, sometimes after opening a foot or two and sometimes just only a few inches! Seems to happen a lot when it’s cold like yesterday. Figure with 70k miles on the car, you would have experienced it by now if it’s a RAV4 thing!
@acuintegra what you are describing seems like the very expensive rear hatch shocks starting to fail. Not common but I have seen it. They will do some wacky things
Excellent video!!! Super informative. We need more videos like this. I am considering buying a RAV4 and this is the type of information I have been looking for. Thank you!
I drive a 2021 RAV4 hybrid which I love. But I would like to comment on fabric seats. I recently sold my 1986 Porsche 944. It had all fabric interior. The seats were in very good condition when I sold it and all of leather seats on any car were bad or replaced of this age.
I don't have a RAV4 but thinking about getting one,we have a 2019 Avalon 71k on it,change oil every 5k we have not had not a single problem out of it,by far the best vehicle we have owned and we have had a few, I'm wanting my wife to have all wheel drive we looking at the RAV4 also venza.
Just curious why the RAV4 over the venza I liked the ride of the venza jus concerned bout the transmission I live in the mountains, the RAV4 engine noise was a little loud when ya got into the throttle.
Some TH-cam mechanics take serious issues with the recommended 0w=16 oil saying its too thin and engine WILL NOT LAST TO 80,000 MILES! ANY THOUGHTS ON THIS? IM SO CONFUSED!
What happened to the steering wheel to cause that? I keep my cars if I can to 200,000 and none ever did that. My 2006 Saab 9-3 which I loved really had no problems just rubber parts being replaced between 130,000 and 160,000 and I sold the car still running in 2018 with 195,000 miles . Today it has 270,000 with the second owner. Own a 2013 Subaru Legacy with 140,000 and the first problem I had was at 120,000 when the master brake cylinder started failing and again at 130,000 had to replace suspension components. But again no other problems. Even my 2018 Buick Envision now has 82,000 and nothing has broken - just regular maintenance. It seems a lot of cars now can hit 75,000 without many problems if any. Oil change every 5000.
I find the customer service varies from dealership to dealership. Like the one I got my 22 rav 4 from never picks up the phone same with there service department.
I have been leasing the Toyota rav 4 since 2012, i have had the 2012, 2015, 2018, 2021 but only for 3 years 🎉🎉🎉i really love❤the car 🚗 i now have the 2024 rav 4 LE and could not get the XLE because the price went up about 170 dollars 💵 a month 😮😮my plan in the next 3 years , is my wife Monika is retiring and when the lease is up for the 2024 we will buy the 2027 cash 💰 rav 4 and get the XLE. Then I should be good for 10 years. To me I think 🤔 Toyota is an excellent car to buy and most of their cars 🚗 have a regular transmission not the cvt.
23 RAV4 XSE I've had eight months at 5k miles....two oil changes and 5k service....it's been great....swapping it out for a 24 so I can get all of the tech.... Question: Where do I get information about issues and recall?
I desire to buy one of these vehicles in May: 1. Toyota Rav4 2. Subaru Outback 3. Hyundai Santa Cruz. All are around the same price. I am leaning toward the Santa Cruz because it can haul smelly trash once a week to the dump. The Outback has 72 months 0%. The Toyota has 4.75%. I hear that the RAV4 has a noisy interior.
I just want to say we had a Toyota Sienna roll going 70 mph across 2 lanes. Tow truck driver and policeman separately said if it hadn't been Toyota, there would have been fatalities.
A big factor for me is how wide the back doors open. RA-4 doors make it hard to get in and out with children seats. No one mentions how they do in snow. I had a 2018 AWD that would get stuck at every opportunity. Leather seats on RAV-4 are not leather. Gas vapor leaks is not a minor problem. I never came close to 30 mpg with my RAV-4. I believe the RAV-4 needs a redo.
I think you said you have the heated steering wheel feature. I wonder if the heat is getting too hot underneath or the warmth is effecting the integrity of that cheap steering wheel cover?
I have exact same car .the color is unique as he mentioned i have been getting 30-35 miles per gallon on highways. what would you suggest to clean inside the hood ?
Great information on the RAV4. 👍👍👍 I am curious where your RAV4 was built. Normally, the USA manufactured vehicles are better quality than of Mexico or Canada. Nowadays, it’s all hit and miss unless a vehicle is built in Japan. The steering wheel issue was disappointing because car is only 3-4 years old. Even my previous 20 year old Lexus IS300 didn’t have this issue but it had sticky dashboard issues. I believe there was a recall on that regardless it was peeling anyway if it was handled roughly….but mechanically it was flawless.
It’s an excellent point, believe it or not this one has a built date of 10/19 in Japan. I’m starting to suspect that possibly one of my wife’s hand creams could have caused it, but still a bit annoying. I’ve had the pleasure of owning a IS300 , great cars.
Still driving my 20 year old Lexus RX330 AWD with 44,518.it’s flawless but a bit of a gas hog. Made in Japan. I own a ‘21 Highlander Platinum. Really nice vehicle. Love it!
XLE is the trim we have, yes lower trim levels don’t have heated steering wheel therefore a cheaper steering wheel material, which I honestly knowing what I know now I would much rather have.
Any further thought on steering wheel peel? Toyota advertises 'leather wrapped heated steering wheel'. Hope out 'ordered' 24 RAV 4 steering will not shed come spring time...lol...
I am curious Paul... Since the wear is only on the Left Side of your steering wheel would that be due to a Wedding Ring? My wife wore this new skirt years ago with a zipper down the whole back side and wore a small but noticeable 'rip' into the front driver's seat. I was not happy about that. I was just trying to figure out what would cause that wear & tear on your steering wheel. I have not seen that before.
I have a 2021 rav4 le and i change the oil regularly but it always smells like gasoline excessively i dont know if its something i should be worried about?
From my experience with the leather, it seemed pretty thick (vs alot of what others have) and will hold up well. I doubt they'd use soft stuff found in Mazda's.
@@VikingsGarage.. You really have to research to find out which trims do have real leather.. The 4 Runner S5 Premium states Softex on the sticker.. Some of the Lexus models use Softex.. I was surprised to learn that ..
Great video as usual Paul. I don’t own a RAV4 but sent a link to friends that do. Fwiw, my 2018 4runner has peeling on the top of the steering wheel. Not sure if it’s sun exposure that causes it to happen there or what. But since I forced myself to just drive it properly (10ish and 2ish lol) the deterioration has slowed. I wish there were good real proper leather replacements available.
🙏🏻 I appreciate that! I agree, most replacements look to out of place or cheap. There’s always the ultra expensive and irrational steering wheel replacement. I’m not replacing this steering wheel 🤷🏼♂️
You need to read the owners manual, specifically the section for smart , start stop. If that doesn’t help, there’s possibly a few scenarios here: Most likely you got a parasitic draw on your dcm. The firmware on it drains the battery when the vehicle is not being used.
Alignment??? I haven’t done an alignment in 25 years. Oil change, yes, I do that way more than scheduled, my Tundra says 10k miles, I’m more like 5k miles.
Thanks for the heads up on those issues. My wife bought a 2020 XLE CPO about a year ago with about 68000 miles. It's the twin of yours. I had all those fluids changed last summer except for the brake fluid. Since she works from home, she's only put about 2000 miles on it. It's due for its 6-month oil change and rotation so I'll ask about the control arms, HP fuel pump and the other things when I take it in.
I have a 2019 Rav 4 XLE with under 9k miles. I KNOW I don't drive it a lot but have had issues with the battery also. The first time was in 2021 and I took it to the dealer and they said it was a bad cell and gave me a new one. Fast forward to around Dec 2023 and I had to have it jumped. I took it to the dealer and he said it was dead because I didn't drive it enough to keep it charged. They refused me a new battery because it was fully charged when I got there. I had them install a trickle charger on it and end up plugging it in every time I get home. Is it normal for batteries to go bad so often or is it because I don't drive it enough? They charged me as much for the trickle charger and install as a new battery would have been...sigh
Every car will have a tiny parasitic draw, if not driven or started often enough… it will eventually die. Putting it on a trickle charger when not in use is your best bet.
When I saw and heard about the redesign of the 2019 model year I knew I wanted the last generation of '16-'18. Bought a brand new RAV4 XLE Hybrid in 2018. Most perfect vehicle ever made. Has the upgraded stereo with nav system in dash, not that ugly screen sticking up. Consumer reports has zero problems in their annual auto issue for the 16-18 model year. And I even like the more sophisticated styling of the generation I own. I would buy one of these years if looking for a used one.
If you take anything away from this video it's never buy the first year of a redesigned vehicle .... My 2021 RAV4 has been flawless . None of the issues stated in this video .
💯
This morning I saw on TH-cam a new video from CBC "Toyota recalling 100,000 vehicles in Canada for airbag defect" Luckily my RAV4 2022 was not in the list but 2020-21 was. I checked to see if this is only Canadian problem but found another TH-cam videos from a U.S. TV channel posted 1 hour ago with title "Toyota recalling 1M vehicles for potential air bag problem" but they didn't specify a list with specific vehicles
@3dEmil we are getting instructions on it as we speak. Will keep you posted
@@3dEmilThis doesn’t affect NZ RAV4s.

Very cool!!
Thanks for sharing.
Very good quality evaluation.

If you would’ve bought the hybrid, you wouldn’t have to have the brakes replaced. I’m going on 118,000 and I still have plenty.
Hi Viking im from Portugal and i also bought a rav4 2020 but hybrid awd. I´m super happy with mine with 70000+ km. Never gave me any problem for now. keep up the good work
Cheers!! Abraço 🇵🇹
I appreciate your support!! 🙏🏻
You guys got yourself’s a gem there, the 2023 are all sorted out. 👏🏻👏🏻
Never let your fuel level run low. Keep doing it and burn out the fuel pump.
👍🏻
I own a 2022 RAV4. This is my second Toyota - I used to own a 2012 highlander, which I had for 8 years, with 0 problems. The RAV4 has low miles at 15k and has been getting oil changes less than 5k miles so far.
- I have already had the roof molding fail and replaced under warranty,
- The coolant keeps spilling out from the overflow reservoir - I have now taken it to the dealership 3 times and every time they inform me that they have not found any issue and top off the coolant.
Sounds like you got yourself a winner there.
Sorry to hear!!
My ‘21 has been flawless. Currently at 65k mikes. Just fluid and filter changes - still running the original brakes.
That’s awesome!!
Thank you for sharing!!
When you’re Rav does need brakes buy them form Toyota , nothing on the aftermarket will compare to original equipment
I believe that to be the case here.
We just replaced the rear brakes in our 2011 Corolla at 180,000 miles. I have been driving Toyotas since 1979z
That’s awesome.
My 2022 RAV4 hybrid has 10k miles and has been flawless. Not built until November 2022, the mid-term refresh fixed all the problems mentioned. I love my RAV4.
Absolutely!!
I appreciate you taking the time to watch!!
10K no car should ever have problems in the first 10K tell us what is happening at 80K
Thanks great information, As for the steering wheel it can be hand creams and sanitizers. or sunscreen,
I have a 2020 Rav 4 hybrid limited with most options. 50,000 miles. Mostly normal maintenance issues. The man made “leather” wears like iron. Had a couple of warranty issues-mirrors bracing was replaced and the windshield trim-all covered when under warranty. Best vehicle we’ve ever owned.
That’s good to know.
Thank you dude. Please keep posting. Our recent purchase of XLE Premium Hybrid has been flawless so far and drives us like a charm.
Will do, Thank you!! 🙏🏻
I have 60k on my xle premium and it is going great!
No issues
@Guotshol2024 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I'm looking into buying a 2020 or 2021 Rav4 have been looking into buying gas only because I'm so nervous about the cost of the Hybrid battery replacement. This video is helpful what are your thoughts on a rav4 Hybrid?
I would still pick the gasoline power engine only one. 🤷🏼♂️
Way less to worry about .
(Get a 2022, all sorted out by that point)
Great tips and help !

A lot a positive comments on the RAV4 .
And he’s absolutely right.
Nowadays manufacturers don’t want you keeping your car for longer than 5 years.
I appreciate your sharing!!
Nice 👍
Well if you get cx5 , you’ll get a more refined car
@ottodepaz7187 your joking right!! 😆
@@VikingsGarage no joking the material inside the cabin es superior than the rav 4 , Mazda is underrated that’s all.
If the tires are wearing evenly, why pay for alignment?
I have a 21 TRD and have had none of these issues! When you change your trans fluid would be cool if you documented it..
I most certainly will.
Those TRD RAV4 are great.
I appreciate you taking the time to watch!! 🙏🏻
That’s fair!
I appreciate your support!
This is very true, but honestly you’ve made the right choice. 🤘🏻
How ba$ is the mpg on 4 runner? Looking at one

Rumor as it they assemble Toyota engines with Honda Bond..😅
Seriously, that’s an excellent question that I honestly don’t have an answer for.
You’re very welcome!!
Very nice!! Thank you for watching and sharing your experience!
Hi!
Great job, excellent video. Very objective analysis from your personal experience. I am about to buy the 2024 RAV 4 XLE and I feel very confident now. Hope it will give me more happy moments than problems! Thanks a lot!
I’m sure you will!! 👍🏻
the damage on the steering wheel on the left side is common on all cars more or less that have that thin coat but is more common with married people due to the ring on the finger
Ive just bought a 2020 lovely car no problems.
Congrats!!
Enjoy!
Love both of mine! I liked my 2021 XLE premium so much, I bought a 2023 LE to replace our Nissan Murano. Love them!
Sweet!!
I have a 2015 rav with 240k have torque converter chatter at 190k did two drain and flushes and added torque coverter fix and its working fine at 240k might do another drain and fill soon. Looking forward to a 2021 or 22 in a year or so. Thanks for the review 👍
You’re very welcome!!
Thank you for sharing your experience.
Crazy how I find myself researching a vehicle that I'm altready committed to buy!
This frank review of personal experience gives me confidence in the decision I made was right. Such useful content is apptreciated.
🙏🏻 Thank you for watching!
I have 16,000 miles on a 2023 RAV4 hybrid and I love it.
The hardest thing on the leather steering wheel is hand sanitizer and wearing rings on your fingers that rub the wheel.
That is most likely it.
And fake fingernails do damage too
@beingfullyme no fake nails here.
Roof rail was a pain. Did myself before recall replacing the washer. You will see water were handles are
Absolutely!! Not fun at all, I’ve probably done over 20 of them. A few damaged headliners. 🤷🏼♂️
Yeah, that failure is very common.
thanks 🙏.
I guys I’m stuck with my ‘19.
got at invoice & has been lucky so far.

Hey nothing wrong with the Honda’s.
They are great reliable cars.
I bought the last model Crv with 5 speed transmission. The 2015 and up all cvt. Won’t last like the mechanical trans. Toyota still using mechanical transmission. I use bought a 23 runner TRD off road….love the set up. Plan to have it 25 years plus.
👏🏻
I own a rav4 hybrid , 2020 bought new. As a tall guy at 6’3’’ I do not find seats comfortable. Major problem for me has been cabin noise at freeway speeds, it’s so loud we cannot use the car for travel, just around town. MPG is the only reason I keep it as we get 40 +/-2 consistently.
40 mpg 😱
Thank you for your info.
The gas mileage is wonderful and a great ride.
No, my steering wheel isn't like that.
I did have the rail issue leaking. The dealer took care of it.
I do have an issue pumping gas, though.
Other than that, I LOVE MY RAV 4
These RAV4’s are great vehicles.
Check with your dealer on the fueling issue, you might need a new gas tank.
They redesigned it.
I appreciate you sharing!!
That light grey color you have is really beautiful ! ..........Cheers from Quebec !

Had a 1996 with 245k and very few issues. Just made the plunge with a new 2024 Hybrid Limited. Love it so far, hope I get 150k+
Yeah, my 23 rav started having radio issues at about 2k miles. It was replaced under warranty.
I believe it!
I have a 2019 rav4 xle and my fan is constantly on (low speed) after it warms up even now in the cold winter weather
75,000 miles in 3-4 years, holy shit dude. Do you drive across country often? It takes me 6-7 years to take up that many miles.
Not really, it’s my wife’s vehicle.
Driving is part of her job, medical industry.
My Toyota 2015 RAV4 steering wheel did have the same problem with peeling also. It was a disappointment that this occurred. Other than this it’s been running great!
Definitely a bummer, I appreciate you sharing.
Might be from the hand sanitizer
Happens in alot of vehicles people think handsanitizer and sunscreen damage the leather but jizz and juice are the main leather irritants. Armoral wipes are great for dash steering wheel leathers
I've had the coolant bypassy valve replaced and my steering wheel is much worse than yours. Also had the fuel pump recall done. Mine is a 2019 LE.
That’s a shame.
@VikingsGarage don't get me wrong. The car is great and I hope to have to at least 300k
Totally.
I hear you, it seems to always be so busy over there, ask me how I know?? 🤣🤣
Welcome to the channel, I appreciate you watching!
Very informative video, im actually looking to buy the 2024 rav 4 xle hybrid
I say go for it, they are solid vehicles… completely sorted by now.
Excellent video!!! Super informative. We need more videos like this. I am considering buying a RAV4 and this is the type of information I have been looking for. Thank you!
Right on!!
I appreciate you!!
I drive a 2021 RAV4 hybrid which I love. But I would like to comment on fabric seats. I recently sold my 1986 Porsche 944. It had all fabric interior. The seats were in very good condition when I sold it and all of leather seats on any car were bad or replaced of this age.
They just don’t make it like they used to. It’s a shame!!
This is for the hybrid version 2019 to 2024 every 5,000 miles clean the filter of the hybrid battery will save you tons of money
Do you happen to have a video on jow to do this.
I would pick a new RAV4 over the Venza.
Thank you for the advice think I'll take it.
@randalyates5605 you got it!
Just curious why the RAV4 over the venza I liked the ride of the venza jus concerned bout the transmission I live in the mountains, the RAV4 engine noise was a little loud when ya got into the throttle.
@randalyates5605 I just don’t like the Venza
perhaps seat covers,,,seat cushion...steering wheel cover
It’s definitely on its way. 👊🏻
I want one to Tow a smaller travel trailer not too Small understand something around 17 feet.
Very cool!!
They are rated from 1,500 to 3,500 lbs, so you should be fine.
Some TH-cam mechanics take serious issues with the recommended 0w=16 oil saying its too thin and engine WILL NOT LAST TO 80,000 MILES! ANY THOUGHTS ON THIS? IM SO CONFUSED!
First off , if you referring to me as a TH-cam mechanic then I’m not ok with that.
Thanks for the information 👌 much appreciated.
You’re very welcome!! 🙏🏻
This is true.
Amen Sir, true testament to Toyota’s reliability.
I appreciate your support!!
23 RAV4 XSE I've had eight months at 5k miles....two oil changes and 5k service....it's been great....swapping it out for a 24 so I can get all of the tech....
Question: Where do I get information about issues and recall?
Other then my channel, your dealership should inform you of anything worth addressing
? Between 2020 CX5 or 2020 RAV 4 which would you pick and why thanks for reading my request.
RAV4 all day, I see those Mazda’s come in in a flat bed all the time. Lots of engine and transmission issues.
@@VikingsGarage thanks I see the clear winner
@@swampholler Thanks for your reply. I plan now to buy a Nissan Frontier. But I believe that the Subaru Outback is safer than the RAV/4.
I wish you addressed the issue with the vehicle stalling when shifted to park
What are you talking about. It’s clearly not common issue.
Thanks for this invaluable information sir…will follow this regime.
👍🏻
Good news about the car. But only 69,000 miles on brakes? I got 100-120,000 miles on my 2013 Ford Escape.
I have exact same car .the color is unique as he mentioned i have been getting 30-35 miles per gallon on highways. what would you suggest to clean inside the hood ?
Any good degreaser will do, go light on the electrical components.
Great information on the RAV4.
👍👍👍
I am curious where your RAV4 was built.
MY 21 is made in Canada and have had no issues, no squeaks nothing.
It’s an excellent point, believe it or not this one has a built date of 10/19 in Japan. I’m starting to suspect that possibly one of my wife’s hand creams could have caused it, but still a bit annoying.
I’ve had the pleasure of owning a IS300 , great cars.
That’s great to hear.
Still driving my 20 year old Lexus RX330 AWD with 44,518.it’s flawless but a bit of a gas hog. Made in Japan. I own a ‘21 Highlander Platinum. Really nice vehicle. Love it!
That’s awesome, can’t beat that Toyota quality.
What’s your opinion on the fitment on the glove box and center console storage doors? Both of mine seam to have about a 1/4 inch play in them. 🙀
Sounds about right, it’s no the best quality interior out there. Plus overtime gets even worse
Im pretty sure that Steering wheel issue is probably caused by purel.
Touché!!
Well that's an impressive door pocket to put a huge flashlight in
You never know when you might need it… don’t mess with her 😅🤣
As a Toyota technician, you would think you would know steering wheels are usually pretty cheap and easy to replace.
Oem 👍
Great video. Thanks. The steering wheel wear, I've seen this before, It's likely from her ring.
I do agree. I appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts.
I think the the lower trim models have a lower quality steering wheel surface. I heard that somewhere online last week or so.. What trim do you have?
XLE is the trim we have, yes lower trim levels don’t have heated steering wheel therefore a cheaper steering wheel material, which I honestly knowing what I know now I would much rather have.
Hey good review…do you think a 2023 le hybrid has similar concerns I.e. leak ?or would they fix it ?
2023 are all sorted out
My sister’s R4 prime leaks and squeaks and rattles.
Japan built ‘23 model too
What is you take on the 2024 RAV 4. We are thinking of buying one. Thanks.
Much better buy then this 2020.
The 2024 is completely sorted out and reliable.
You’ll enjoy it!!
Any further thought on steering wheel peel? Toyota advertises 'leather wrapped heated steering wheel'. Hope out 'ordered' 24 RAV 4 steering will not shed come spring time...lol...
I honestly don’t know, but including my wife’s RAV4 this is the second one I see.
We believe it’s being caused by hand sanitizer.
The RAV4 does not use real leather. It is Softex.. The only real leather interiors are found in the Camry XLE and XSE.
Avalon high trim level and 4Runner Limited loaded also👍🏻
@@VikingsGarage.. You really have to research to find out which trims do have real leather.. The 4 Runner S5 Premium states Softex on the sticker.. Some of the Lexus models use Softex.. I was surprised to learn that ..
@charlesjackson1700 indeed my friend 👍🏻
Hand sanitiser made my hands black in a 2007 Ford Focus. I only used it during the covid pandemic.
Most likely the culprit.
How much should I pay for a 2020 Rav4 xle premium having 69,000 miles on it, with having no accident and one owner. Please Suggest.
If you’re asking me, I’m not entirely sure.
Why don’t you check its Nada.com book value
@@VikingsGarage me either.
Hi we have a Toyota Rav4 2021 Premium. It’s constantly saying it charging the battery? Any suggestions we bought the car used at 40,100 Miles.
You need to read the owners manual, specifically the section for smart , start stop.
If that doesn’t help, there’s possibly a few scenarios here:
Most likely you got a parasitic draw on your dcm. The firmware on it drains the battery when the vehicle is not being used.
There is no differential fluid to change on the FWD model as it's part of the transaxle, right?
I would say so, never even seen a fwd RAV4 ever. That’s got to be a south thing
As you should 👏🏻👏🏻
They will run the vin and should pop up.
Thank you for watching Sir!!
Then it would be safe to say buying a new 2024 LE being a safe bet?
Correct 😉
Steering wheel wear may be a ring on the lefthand finger causing it?
What is your opinion of 2.4 turbo that is in 2024 Highlander? Can turbo really last 250 K miles?
Simple and honest answer, with super meticulous maintenance perhaps, but I’m not so sure.
@@VikingsGarageThank You!
My steering wheel is peeling to. I have a 2020 RAV4
I can believe that.
Hi,I have 2021 rav4 hybrid
I feel vibration and shaking in the cabin around the first 1 minute when i start it?
Is this normal?
When I saw and heard about the redesign of the 2019 model year I knew I wanted the last generation of '16-'18. Bought a brand new RAV4 XLE Hybrid in 2018. Most perfect vehicle ever made. Has the upgraded stereo with nav system in dash, not that ugly screen sticking up. Consumer reports has zero problems in their annual auto issue for the 16-18 model year. And I even like the more sophisticated styling of the generation I own. I would buy one of these years if looking for a used one.
The 2018 specially in your specs is a great vehicle. Not a lot of issues.
