  • In this video Greg Macke Your Car Angel explains the problems to look out for when buying a used Toyota RAV4. Even though the Toyota RAV4 is considered by many to be one of the most reliable cars, Greg explains the problems with the engines and transmissions on each of the generations since the RAV4 was first produced in 1997.
    First generation 1996-2000
    Second generation 2001-2005
    Third generation 2006-2012
    Fourth generation 2013-2018
    Fifth generation 2019-Current
Issues covered are the 2.4 liter 2AZ-FE engine with faulty piston rings and stripped head bolts as well as worn valve guides. Also in the latest generation 2019-2020 Rav4 Greg talks about the gas tank issue.
Other cars that compare are the Subaru Forester, Honda CRV, Hyundai Tucson, Ford Escape, Mazda3 and Nissan Rogue.

Just picked up a V6 4WD Rav4 for a song with 242K miles and after a few minor issues were sorted out, it is one of the best driving small SUV's I've ever driven and I'm certain has ever existed! It has massive torque and power for it's size and effortlessly accelerates. I'm getting the same fuel economy that our 2012 2.5L 4 cylinder gets ! I would gladly drive this car as my daily. The V6 is the correct version!

1st generation RAV4 is probably the best SUV ever made.
Even in Canada, they barely rust. Superb drivetrain, slippery surface handling and traction.
Simple reliable design, inline 4 with LOTS of room in the engine bay.
Easy to get parts for, since it shares lots of parts with other common Toyotas.
And he mentioned the glass headlights. Mine still look brand new at 300,000km.
    Stay gold.

    • @grndiesel
      @grndiesel 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

I agree with all of this. Toyotas usually rot quickly but our 1997 4-door is only starting to show a little crust after over 20 years of ownership. Still has tight and responsive handling after all those years and on rare occasions when something does need fixing, it's easy to repair at home. Such a well engineered vehicle.

Everything you've stated in the two main videos I've watched and that I'm familiar with, the CRV and RAV4, are right on the money, down to even some of the smaller problems like CRV door lock failure. @@LoneTinaja Our 2008 we bought used at 175K miles was burning 1 quart per 350 miles. I rebuilt it myself using Toyota parts and Toyota TSB. I replaced the pistons, rings, all oil seals, tensioner and went ahead and replaced the piston and crank bearings. The cylinders were fine, still had factory hash marks! Now at 215K it hasn't burned a single drop of oil since the rebuild and this engine will easily go 500K.

My best friend is a retired mechanic. Did a lot of testing, comparison notes, test drives, and more. Decided on & bought a new '07 RAV4 V6, still drives it. We have done many fishing trips, 4 to 8 hour drives, freeway and Sierra Nevadas, and I did my share of driving. When the time came I bought a new '11 RAV4 V6 and am glad of it. We also each installed 2" trailer hitches (Pays to have a friend w/ mechanic skills) and we tow a 4'+ x 8'+ trailer (sheets of Plywood, gypsum board, etc.) and will pack it high w prunings and trash for dump runs. I do feel fortunate to have lucked into the V6 era, not sure what might be a comparable workhorse when the future comes too soon.

    I love my 2011 Limited V6.
It has every option available in 11.
Since I retired, I now only drive about 5-6K miles a year. In the last 5 years I’ve only put 30K miles on it.
It only has 103K pampered miles.
I use Mobile 1 full synthetic oil and change it every 4K miles. The transmission and rear differential fluid / grease is changed every 30K miles.
It’s always garaged and doesn’t have any door dings. The leather interior looks new.
I plan on driving it for another 15 years. By then the rubber door seals and CV boots will probably need to be replaced, so I’ll sell it and replace it with a Rav AWD hybrid.
That will be the last car I’ll ever have to buy.
My wife can enjoy it after I’m dead and gone. LOL

Thank you so much Greg for doing such a detailed breakdown of each generation and the breakdown on engine issues and driving issues with each car I actually just levitated to looking at a RAV4 without knowing all this information so to then hear your detail breakdown as to the best years and any engine issues to look for in each generation is a really going to help me in sourcing the right vehicle as this is kind of my first choice that I like aesthetically but due to my budget being really tight I'm looking at a 2002 but you've also made me aware of the engine issues that will make me also consider the 2004 and 2005 so thank you very much for the excellent content please continue with this style of breaking down vehicles and generations and issues so it helps people who aren't too mechanical kind of know the questions to bring to a mechanic to look for as well when sourcing a used vehicle 👍🇨🇦

Wow came to this video by chance and curiosity got me as I own a 2010 Rav 4. Very well put together, informative, free advice and definitely on the ball. The only repair I did on my Rav 4 is replaced the right front exhaust sensor as it was tripping out my Engine light. Aside from that, regular oil change, filters etc. gas and go. I drove to NY from Canada many times and tow various trailers for different reasons (Utility, Boat) etc. and still it goes strong. No smoke, no leaks, no wheel bearing changes or shocks, no alignment or rusted parts in 10 yrs (always underwash in winter after snow fall to get rid of salt). Coming from Guyana South America Tropical climate Toyota is legendary. After trying with other makes and many problems - I returned to Toyota Brand, now My wife has a 2019 CHR to go with the Rav 4. Maybe your next review can be the CHR. Thanks Greg. Love your video

Great video with very useful information. I have a 2012 that my younger daughter drives and a 2014 that my older daughter drives. Bought them both used, as lease returns with 36k miles on them. Base model 4x4s, and very reliable so far.

My Rav was a lease return at 36K miles. We now have just over 100K miles.
The best car I ever had was a 78 Corolla. It threw a rod at a whopping 488K miles. I’ve owned Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Chevy, but I’ve always gotten more trouble free miles out of my Toyota’s.

I love my rav4 my aunt gave me it and it's been my daily driver ever since, raised up a bit on 17 inch akita rims has made it an awesome vehicle. And I've seen alot of these nearby me all of a sudden the red really pops out of the crowd and some old people told me that I really have taken care of the rav4. Putting it on bigger rims and tires has made it even more of an awesome vehicle for the beach

One issue I would like to raise is that a lot of the 2013 & 2014 Rav 4's are having their entertainment units fail. I had to have mine replaced, and this is reported by a LOT of people on carcomplaints. If I did not have the extended warranty this would have cost $2500.
