Fellas, once again thanks very much for another amazing review! Love your work, and I really appreciate that you’ve covered an EV. I’m an owner of a BYD Dolphin, which has the same chassis, battery, motor and so on. I’ve been a two wheel and four wheel rev head all my life and this car after one year and 40,000 kms, I still love it as much as I did during my honeymoon period. I’m a driving instructor and clock up a 1000 kms a week. I charge at home, don’t miss trying to find time to get to a petrol station and I’m so happy to have to not ruin my Sunday with doing an oil and filter changer every 10 weeks. Keep up the great work, your all top shelf legends!!
Yea we have the Dolphin as well and it’s a cracker car! We like the interior a lot better than the Atto as well as it’s more… sophisticated (boring??). Only thing it’d change is what Adam mentioned which is slightly bouncy suspension. Latest updates have fixed the nervous safety features now, for the most part, so pretty stoked about that. 😊
Home charging is such a game changer! ask me how much range I have on my car...go on. I have no idea. I know it's above 30% and will last me the next couple of days though so I'll just plug in one night when I get home. How's that for range anxiety, and I do about 30,000km per year. Driving an ICE was more worrisome
I can't tell you how often I watch your show and then immediately start looking up prices of the car featured. I'm broke, so I never actually buy them, but it keeps me busy. TY.
My next car will likely be a BYD Sealion 6 Hybrid. No worrying about range since it will go over 1K kilometers on a tank, and charge while using the engine, and you can drive in the city on the electric up to 100ks. Seems like the best compromise.
@@Reshumbox nope. You are mixing "fixed under warranty" with "replaced under warranty". If they just replaced it and wait for the warranty to expire to charge you premium for the part, that is bad

Loved my sun roof and guitar strings new windscreen no issues Obrien reckon super easy calibration 👍
Yes. I think ev just will never take off with the high insurance costs and significant depreciation. Unless things change significantly.. not everyone can take VAG and other euro car level depreciation in their household budgets!
Purchased the MGZS EV about a year ago, and had the 7Kw charger at home installed. Done 50,000 kilometres, no issues whatsoever. MG has a bigger dealer network and a 7 year warranty, so that's why I chose it over the BYD. As far as devaluation is concerned, it only cost me $20 per week to travel 50,000 klms a year. it pays for itself over the 7 year warranty period. Devaluation? Meh. Calculate $100 per week of petrol over 7 years! So far so good. It is what it is, but what it is is OK. Nowhere near as bad as you would think. The power is delicious. Like me, if you can live with it, it is hands down the superior choice. Kind of feels like going back to petrol would be a majour downgrade. One year on, I would never wish to turn the clock back. I chose correctly.
I like what byd are doing. If the shark 6 ends up being as good as anticipated at $15k less than a ranger or hilux. Get used to seeing that badge around.
I'm sure its reasonably well built, the Chinese home brand Auto industry would _not_ be selling under-baked cars on the world market...just as the Japanese wouldn't have in the 1960/70's _however_ the design leaves much to be desired with the interior looking like a wet tissue draped over a milk bottle tied together with a red cable tie. Build Your Dreams might work in Nigeria...it doesn't in established markets, and is highly presumptive in the negative.
I would wait 10 years before buying any Chinese branded EV assuming they get a reputation of a decent build and longevity. Don't hold your breath, I reckon it will be the hybrid that becomes main steam not BEVs and China has decent competition from other countries when it comes to hybrids.
I've got a Chinese made 2022 Ford Territory, which isn't available in Oz, but is one of the best cars I've owned, for the purpose it serves. I've owned Mercs, two Alfas, a Porsche 911S4, a Range Rover and a few Korean and Japanese cars, but now that I'm older and based in the Philippines for work, I sit in a lot of traffic jams and drive on bad roads, and this vehicle had held up really well. The build quality is superb, and the interior is really nice, and it's well equipped. It's a cross over with an ICE turbo, so it's got decent get up and go, but it's the extras that stand out, like adaptive cruise, ldw, panoramic sunroof, 360 camera, seat cooling etc. And it was affordable. It was actually tuned and co developed by Ford Australia. The Philippines has a lot of Chinese vehicles, and they hold up really well here and have a great reputation for reliability.
A friend has just purchased a brand new seal. 300 KMs on its maiden trip it goes into limp mode. Three weeks later and the dealer still has no idea what's wrong with it.
Biggest problem buying new electric car is it depreciates like anything the worst is if you buy a second hand and it goes kapoot you will be paying upwards of $25,000 to get the batteries fixed it's lose lose
That is not the reality I'm living in. I live in a regional town. Most of charging done at home on level 1 during the day. And in 8 years time, probably won't need to buy a car anymore - automated driving.
Out of everything mentioned here, the only showstopper for this punter is the weak aircon. Once you've had a car with that issue, you don't ever want to live with it again. Second place goes to the plug ugly hospital chair blue "leather" they're using for the interior. My god it's a depressing colour.

Great comment about the bipartisan nature of ICE or EV owners. I don't get it. In our family with have a Model Y for family duties (and insurance is just under 2k) and a modified GR Yaris for track fun. I love them both for different reasons. What I really really don't like is the assumption I like Musk because I own a Tesla. That guy is a dick! We considered a BYD, but just couldn't get past the interior design. With a more normal design it would have been a serious contender.
I totally agree on the liking cars for what they are. We have a Polestar 2 and a Porsche 981 Boxster S with a beautiful N/A flat 6. I also love them both for different reasons. I don't like the styling or design philosophy of Teslas, hence I didn't buy one, but you're right about the Musk factor. I know that when I see someone driving around in a Tesla they are doing so because they are an objectively very good car, but I can't help but see a MAGA hat with wheels. That's my issue I know.
"BYD BAD CHINA BAD" Says people using their Chinese made phone, using Chinese made utensils, wearing Chinese made clothes, sleeping in Chinese made quilts.
Well, most cars are made in China. They have been for years. Every manufacturer, just about, has something or all the car made in China. So basing your car buying decision on that is dumb. You’re just being sucked into the marketing hype. Plus their manufacturing is some of the best in the world now. Look at the case of Teslas made in USA vs the ones made in China. People were specifically hunting for serial numbers of Teslas made in China to buy as the ones made in USA were so poorly made. Buy American?…. Nop I’ll buy Chinese thanks, better quality 😂
buying a used ev is a huge gamble no matter what brand. the depreciation shows that. however i'd be inclined to buy a used polestar or etron before touching a used tesla or byd with all the issues they have in qc from new. i spent a few didi rides in the byd's in shanghai and they are great comfortable cars (leagues better than the model 3/y but i wouldn't trust a used one just like most evs)
Its all well and good ReDriven saying we should appreciate each powerplant for what it can do, but the manufacturers and marketeer wankers keep offering things it cant do. It continues to be marketed as a replacement for the ICE but until it can do what an ICE does for a similar purchase and running cost, it will not be universally accepted. People will not tolerate a backward step for a higher price and many cant afford to do so anyway.
How cars are marketed is always going to be something to contend with. We’re attempting to create a narrative where the marketing and noise around a car is the least relevant part of the car buying equation.
EV's are a backwards step in some ways compared to an ICE car, but in many ways they are far better. It mostly depends on your personal circumstances, but if you have your own home (particularly if you have solar), and you don't drive very long distances often, nothing compares to an EV for a daily driver. It's hard to fathom how easy and convenient they are to use and how cheap they are to run and maintain compared to an ICE car. EV technology will continue to improve, particularly with regard to battery density and charging rates, and that will help with some of their drawbacks in the coming decades.
@@moggy4086 The trouble is there are many many ppl that do not have solar, or a garage, or the money to purchase one, but the govt is mandating no new ICE cars from XXXX. It's only a good replacement for a small sector of cars. The" battery tech will get better" is an annoying cliche that has worn very thin. Coz it isnt true to any significant degree. Li ion was invented in the 1970s, not put into cars until 1998 and here we are 26 yrs later. You're blowing smoke out of your bum. Its only 6 years until new ICEs are banned in some countries. The boffins better get their shit together in a hurry. We dont have decades.
Sorry, I just don't think EVs are a good second hand car choice especially if it's more than a couple of years old as you just don't know how the car has been treated in terms of charging which can dramatically affect the longevity of a battery. Plus with Chinese cars we just don't know their what long term quality is like , I would guess they will fall apart just like a cheap watch. There is a reason why Chinese cars are cheap! If you're leasing a new EV great, but as a private buyer unless you're prepared to lose buckets of money you'd be crazy to buy one. No one in their right mind would buy a 6 or 7 year old Chinese EV, so the longer you hang on to your shiny Chinese EV the harder it will be to sell and ultimately it will practicably worthless especially out of warranty. Welcome to the disposable car!
There is a reason why Chinese cars are cheap - purchasing power parity. It costs a lot less to make a car in China because the Chinese car manufacturers don't have to pay their labour force as much, they don't have to pay as much for parts, their market is so large that they get massive economies of scale, and because they make so many cars it is cost effective to make a lot of their own parts in house. BYD for example was a battery company before it decided to make cars, and so they don't have to outsource their battery manufacturing which is a significant cost saver for them. Lack of quality in manufacturing is not the reason Chinese cars are cheap. All of the Chinese cars I've seen have been of superb quality, easily comparable to German and Japanese car manufacturers, and noticeably better than American manufacturers. We have quite a large number of EV's now on the roads around the world that are greater than five years old, and we can start to draw conclusions from that. What data from these vehicles tells us is that they are much more reliable than comparable age ICE vehicles, that ongoing maintenance costs are significantly lower, and that battery longevity is significantly better than even EV manufacturers expected when those cars were made. Ten year old Tesla model S and X vehicles for example with an average mileage of 320,000km have on average only 12% battery degradation. There are plenty of Tesla model S cars with over 750,000km that are still going strong with quite low maintenance requirements than an ICE car of that age. EV's will last longer on average before being disposed of than an ICE car. There are plenty of issues with EV's that make them not for everyone, but you're pointing out the strengths of EV's and trying to argue they're somehow weaknesses.
Burn You Dreams. Apparently the warranty & customer service after you buy it is rubbish. I was considering a BYD if I have to go electric... but I think I'd rather a Nissan Leaf or whatever Toyota pulls out of the wood work.

I charge at home, don’t miss trying to find time to get to a petrol station and I’m so happy to have to not ruin my Sunday with doing an oil and filter changer every 10 weeks. Keep up the great work, your all top shelf legends!!

Home charging is such a game changer! ask me how much range I have on my car...go on. I have no idea. I know it's above 30% and will last me the next couple of days though so I'll just plug in one night when I get home. How's that for range anxiety, and I do about 30,000km per year.
@@ReDriven Yes, but you are one voice in millions and as good as ReDriven is, not everybody watches it.
