"This is Goombario. Wait a minute, that's me! I'm softlocking the game so you don't find out anything about me!" That's what I think Goombario would say if the game didn't instantly softlock.
I really like the fact that Stryder is clearly passionate about the game as a whole. That is, he could just explain the glitches, but he also explains the story context of what's happening in the game as well when he talks about them, I think that's pretty cool.
Number 2 is very creepy. Just the castle floating in space every time you load your save with no music playing, as if Mario has failed to save Peach and the Mushroom Kingdom. It should have been number 1.
It's like a PermaDeath Mario game: only 1 life and you are forced to look at Bowser's castle, as if he won the battle: you are dead. He won, you lost. He took over the world.
Would honestly make for a good (believable) creepypasta. Especially since you could just provide people some emulator save data as 'proof', beats any video evidence
#2 should have been #1 IMO because the softlocked save file will remain on both castles in space, constantly reminding you of how you definitely failed to rescue Peach because you were too busy glitching the game.
Is it weird that game breakers like the Peach Warp lock make me feel fear? It's like my instincts are telling me there's something very, very wrong happening.
I'm not that versed in paper mario glitches but if that is the one where it shows the browser castle forever, I feel the same way. Maybe it's the menacing way he said "forever"
Softlock #10: Cutscene cancel Softlock #9: Partner forever active Softlock #8: Lakilester caught, no handle Softlock #7: Tattling not handled. Softlock #6: Peach% is glitchy. Softlock #5: Lakilester is glitchy. Softlock #4: Shell is not in intended place Softlock #3: White clubba twice? Now that's a glitchy glitch. Softlock #2: Chapter 8 peach intermission doesn't exist. Softlock #1: OOB softlock.
#2 is pretty creepy. Just think about it. You saved your file after bowser has wrecked the kingdom, killed Mario, ruined Peach, and that's the screen your left with. Just a flying castle.
I love the "Peach Warp x3" glitch, it looks like a permadeath mario game, showing that Bowser won, meaning you are permanetly unable to continue: mario is dead.
It's surprising how much you can mess up this game. It doesn't look like there would be much to do. This wasn't quite as crazy as the crash glitches. But it was still pretty cool. I especially like how you can reset the game to the prologue while keeping all your stuff. Sounds like it will lead to several other crazy glitches.
GlitchShark Yeah I definitely didn't expect this game to be so broken before looking into it. And we still have tons of glitches that I can't wait to share!

Other Goombario: "You better reset the game, because you're not saving this."
Bean Counter Productions In chapter 3-1, there's a part where a Koopa takes a powerup. If you hit the home menu in the middle of the powerup bouncing around, it will just loop around forever. Softlock.

I used to play this game all the time on Wii VC, and learning about some of the inner workings of the game through these videos is really intriguing and satisfying.
Also one more thing in addition to my replies, I personally think (Just my opinion) that the #2 should have been #1 and the #1 should have been #2. Just my personal opinion and here's the reason for my opinion its because while #1 is super cool that u can do multiple things with it i think something that could potentially soft lock your entire save file is a bit more awesome then experimentational soft locks that just makes u reset. I tried out the Softlock on the #1 spot, and I successfully landed on the top spring, completing a cutscene that never began. Then, I fell down, and when I tried to get back up with the springs, the game softlocked, and I couldn't even move!
One time my sister was playing paper Mario and on one of the princess peach scenes she soft locked the game I don't know how she did it but it was amazing
Are there any hard-savelocks? (Something that corrupts your save file in a way that you can't start the game and don't have a way to reset/erase (anymore))
I actually remember clipping through one of those rock platforms in Mt. Lavalava with Lakilester and couldn't escape. A perfect Paper Mario soft lock if ever there was one!...which there was.
I happened to get myself into a softlock while playing earlier. I was in the jungle after finding the Yoshi kids. I was in the second room after the Raphael Raven statue, where you have to block off the water to advance. I triggered the hidden Volt Shroom in the room, but my inventory was full, so I tossed it. I then pushed a block and the item bounced into Mario, collecting it. No menu popped up, Mario was just stuck pushing the block.
I just experienced a version on the #9 softlock today. Somehow, I had Bombette on the ground below the train platform when I started the cutscene to board the train, and when I got on she just kept on walking into the ledge, unable to get into the train.
I have a question. What would happen if you stored the Partner swap window when getting onto the train in number 9, then switched partners from Sushie to someone else?
One of the LPers I'm watching play Paper Mario managed to softlock the game in the Chapter 6 interlude by removing the sneaky parasol disguise of the clubba while in the light of a koopatrol.
Isn't there a way if you get leveled up to much, you get stuck on the level up screen because the stats are maxed? I remember hearing that in a playthrough once.
I once had a softlock occur once with goompa at the gate. It was during one of my many resets and I'm completely unsure how it happened. Anyone have any ideas?
How did they even program Goombario as a standard NPC without giving him a placeholder tattle? I mean, in SMRPG the bosses that you can only fight before meeting Mallow still have psychopath thoughts, so you'd think that this would be the same kind of situation. And are there any other characters with no tattle programmed who will softlock the game if you use Goombario on them, like Peach or Bowser or some of the bosses?
I've actually found a soft lock glitch by accident as a kid it's the last part of the glitch I can't remember off the top of my head, it's only on the N64 not sure if it works on the Wii or Wii U virtual console but you will have to complete Chapter 6 to activate this gltich as the parasol is required. Walk out of the revolving wall walk down the staris and go to the door where te Guard Troopa where you would try exiting out of in Peaches Room, make sure no guards except for the one gurading the door to peaches room notices you the exclamation point will appear then immediately as it end hit B with the parasol and if done right you'll transform into the guard, but since the games memory isn't meant to have a guard notice peach transforming into a guard the game will softlock causing you to restart the Peach sequence to progress, if it doesn't work keep trying it should eventually work if not guess it was just once in a lifetime soft lock I found.
If you do sushie glitch at snow city that allows you to swim at ground, then going to the cut scene that gives you the star while still swimming, you can't no more get out of the room.
Hey Stryder, I discovered a new softlock! It has been recorded with an iPad but you can clearly see it. It involves a guard, peach, and getting caught transforming. Idk if it got discovered, but can you check it out and see if you can pull it off?
I've seen a couple softlocks with the Sneaky Parasol before. Can't say I know exactly what happened there since the footage is after the setup, but it's probably similar
"Bowser's Victory" The day was ever so strikingly beautiful. The sun was shining, and the flowers were blooming. As Mario escapes the boiling hot Mt. Lava Lava before it's complete eruption and melting down our hero, he continues his journey forward. However, something seems ever so peculiar... Something that even our greatest plumber in the Mushroom Kingdom, is not able to control... Perhaps... It's all.... just.... a dream?! Did Mario ever truly escaped the raising molten lava?! Or in reality, he wasn't saving the princess in the first place... As the sky turns dark and the entire area gets covered in darkness, Mario wakes up, within the only memory he saw last... It was the Bowser's floating in space castle! Unreachable! Impossible to get to! Now our greatest italian protagonist is trapped in his nightmare, for all eternity, till the end of dawn. Stuck with the same thought, of Bowser's Victory and his existence of his castle, not to mention, Princess Peach being permanently kidnapped, cause there is no one else that can save her. ...the nightmare shall continue... ...till the end of time... ...until our hero... ...finally wakes up... THE END (PS. I know that sucked XD)
Incidentally, I don’t count #10 as a softlock, since the game is still in an interactive state after it, you just can’t trigger a critical cutscene. At least from what I’ve heard, and given all the other entries on this list, a softlock is when the game is still processing instructions and hasn’t come to a complete stop, but it is stuck in a state where it will never accept the player’s input.
The Sushie-softlock needs less than that. My game once softlocked by just getting on the train from the south-side, the part of the platform that is too high to just walk over. My thinking is that Sushie just too short, and can't jump high enough to reach the platform, or just too stupid enough to walk around. She ends up just hopping infinitely, and waiting for a train that will never leave.
+Kapus Sure! Basically I hop on lakilester from a certain position, hop back off, and then walk to the edge of that lava pit. I use Lakilester again on the first frame he starts running back to Mario, if that makes sense.
Okay, I tried the Spring Storage softlock, and I discovered something: If you go into a load zone, and then let loose all the springs you stored, you'll end up going into the next zone, and it actually doesn't softlock Mario!
quick question, but what happens if you try to bypass the 32 key item limit via letters? i don't know if there are that many in the game, but it seems feasible. if not, then perhaps there's enough to help bypass the limit with other key items?
@stryder7x is there a way to unsoftlock the level cap softlock when you have a boss fight that levels u to 28 but u farmed amazee dayzees to 27.99 already im stuck :(
Could someone explain how you can use Early Train to get to an earlier point in the game? I can do Early Whale without much of a problem now, I can't retrigger prologue because I already got the Peach Doll, and I want to try something new. He says you can use Early Train to get to an earlier point, but I can't collect the Toy Train because I've already gotten it. Any way to collect it again?
I was attempting to do some glitches and i did the merlon skip and got behind merlons house. I came out from the left and hit the tree for a star peice, then i proceeded to go back where i came out. Mario became glitchy and then a black screen with an option menu (looked like a debug screen) came up and crashed the game. Know anything about this?
Noah Green Sounds like a "Floating Point Exception" crash. On the N64 version, the game sometimes crashes when falling out of bounds. Maybe that's what it was?
"This is Goombario. Wait a minute, that's me! I'm softlocking the game so you don't find out anything about me!"
That's what I think Goombario would say if the game didn't instantly softlock.
If I had to add anti soft lock for this: “This is me. I really don’t have much to say.”

I thought a soft lock was where your game kind of froze, but it didn't actually freeze, it just won't accept any button inputs?
2:10 Would this also happen when holding Watt?
"Bowser's Victory"
The day was ever so strikingly beautiful.
The sun was shining, and the flowers were blooming.
As Mario escapes the boiling hot Mt. Lava Lava before it's
complete eruption and melting down our hero, he continues his journey forward.
However, something seems ever so peculiar...
Something that even our greatest plumber in the Mushroom Kingdom, is
not able to control...
Perhaps... It's all.... just.... a dream?!
Did Mario ever truly escaped the raising molten lava?!
Or in reality, he wasn't saving the princess in the first place...
As the sky turns dark and the entire area gets covered in darkness, Mario
wakes up, within the only memory he saw last...
THE END
(PS. I know that sucked XD)
4:32 No, that's the universe end.
A permanent softlock is called a hardlock so the 2nd one is both a hard and softlock which I personally find pretty neat.
The 2nd to last
The Sushie-softlock needs less than that.
Top ten hardlocks ? (Permanent softlocks, similar to number 2)
Also 100th comment
Some D-class We need two more permanent softlocks for that video.
I'm having a lot of trouble with the lakilester clip at 7:25
can anyone possibly explain it in more detail?
+Kapus Sure! Basically I hop on lakilester from a certain position, hop back off, and then walk to the edge of that lava pit. I use Lakilester again on the first frame he starts running back to Mario, if that makes sense.
+Stryder7x I think that last bit was what I was missing. Thank you!
@stryder7x is there a way to unsoftlock the level cap softlock when you have a boss fight that levels u to 28 but u farmed amazee dayzees to 27.99 already im stuck :(
#2 is like an actual Game Over. The games done. Bowsa dun dun wun sun.
Possibly, I really don't know much yet so thanks for the help.
Yeah, thats what it was, thanks again.
Noah Green No problem!
