New Hacked Camera Discoveries in Paper Mario!

- I've been playing this game for 19 years and learned a lot of interesting things just by hacking the camera! All footage was taken from my Twitch livestream, / stryder7x
Dolphin has a "Freelook" camera hack that allows us to pan the camera in any direction, zoom in and out, and angle it around. Normally, Paper Mario's camera is squarely centered on Mario, which allowed the developers to take many shortcuts, such as teleporting characters and objects out of bounds. A general trend in this game is to store everything 1,000 units below the center of a room. There are some inconsistencies with these developer trends though - some objects are flagged as invisible, while others end up staying visible in very unexpected locations. There are a lot of things offscreen that are easy to overlook, and whether or not they're visible could depend on a lot of factors, such as our story progress.
The most interesting things we can view with a hacked camera tend to be unused or inexplicable objects. To my knowledge, a few of these were previously undiscovered, such as the S. Jump Charge badge oddity, a seemingly unused off camera area in Dry Dry Ruins, and Kammy Koopa's detached arm floating below Goomba Village.

@@Tob_ii You should play it! It's such a good game! Aged the best of any game on the Nintendo 64. It's an incredible game by today's standards.
@@Arkatox if you have an andriod, get an emulator called Mupen64! It plays N64 games. You will have to get the game files from online however.
@@FembyFerris There are plenty of other ways to play N64 games, including with a Nintendo 64.
Breaking the game camera like this is basically a 20 questions game of "Why the hell did the developers keep [x] in when you don't even see it?" and it's both interesting and baffling.
It's because they needed it for something at some point (cutscenes, soundeffects, ect) and if that something isn't in the Game, it probably was at some point or it was used for testing.
Why bother getting rid of everything you don't see, when you don't see it? ;)
I can say, a lot of old engines had limitations that require you to preload things in advanced. Not so large a problem now that you can just ".load()" pretty much anything with today's consoles.
If I'm not mistaken, they reused some character models sometimes to create trigger points for specific events like Cristaliana Ivor mentioned such as the cutscenes or spawning.
I've heard this line so often from Shesez.
It's part of the charm of these old games. Sometimes you find extra details you can't see but still get put in just to make sense aesthetically. It's nice.

I also just thought of something. He's stated in previous videos that, while in the pyramid, the controls are slightly tilted, where angles are subtly changed. The room is curved. Could it be that the camera is angled slightly, and that's why the controls seem off?

Trouble is it's very easy to grow attached to an intro if they use it for a _very_ long time, rather than changing it every year or so. The day ExoParadigmGamer changes his will be the most painful for me because his original intro is just so creative and fun to listen to.

They're always in 3d. As you might've noticed here, things that appear flat are actually fully three-dimensional models, and it's only thanks to the fixed camera that the illusion works.
I'm not trying to "um technically" you ftr I'm just saying it's probably less exciting than you'd think
I’m well aware on how that games visual style works with the illusion of 2D. I was curious to see the cutscenes showing in a 3D angle, as oppose to being shown in 2D.
All though it might not be as exciting as I envision it, I like seeing games I love in a different way. If that makes any sense

I'm a tad older than you, but I've only played like 4 hours of The Thousand Year Door, but no other paper mario game. I don't like the battle mechanics at all. It's fine to watch and learn about, but not a game I'd like to play.

I just really got to thank you Stryder for the videos you make. I never would've guessed that 16 years later, there would be still be stuff to discover about this game. I never had the chance to play this game, but damn is it interesting to watch your videos on it. The glitches, tricks, techniques, I never would've guessed there was so much to this 1st game of my favorite Mario series.

8:05 My guess as to why there's certain terrain already spawned is the instances where the tracks are already loaded is because they have unique features to them so they load first, whereas the other ones were identical and spawned gradually. Like Stryder said, savin' memory. But still adding some different features to the background when they could've done just fine. Idk, just neat tiny little unseen details that I find really cool.

Wait a minute. At 13:14, could you, in theory, store a Kooper Super Jump (or something along those lines) and reach Skolar stored at the top? Could you skip the remainder of the chapter? It's possible that this particular card isn't the same model with the same properties as the one that triggers the next chapter - I'm unaware of this - but it's a decent theory, I guess.

So I was the one that guessed about the unused room being a single unit of the hall, but I thought about it a little bit more due to the differing dimensions of the room and the hallway:
I'm betting what happened is they used that larger room to begin with as a single segment and made the whole hallway, and then when they tested it with enemies, the Buzzy Beetles on the ceiling were too far away from Mario to activate their aggression and fall down, so they flattened the entire hallway to compensate for it to not change enemy mechanics.
Hacking the camera is perfectly acceptable
