@@Stryder7x i've never played the game. this was the first nintendo 64 game that i saw... and the first paper mario video on the Nintendo 64 was actually one of your video's xD
Breaking the game camera like this is basically a 20 questions game of "Why the hell did the developers keep [x] in when you don't even see it?" and it's both interesting and baffling.
It's because they needed it for something at some point (cutscenes, soundeffects, ect) and if that something isn't in the Game, it probably was at some point or it was used for testing. Why bother getting rid of everything you don't see, when you don't see it? ;)
I can say, a lot of old engines had limitations that require you to preload things in advanced. Not so large a problem now that you can just ".load()" pretty much anything with today's consoles.
If I'm not mistaken, they reused some character models sometimes to create trigger points for specific events like Cristaliana Ivor mentioned such as the cutscenes or spawning.
It's part of the charm of these old games. Sometimes you find extra details you can't see but still get put in just to make sense aesthetically. It's nice.
you have way to much of this game down to muscle memory stryder. I saw you get that fire flower in chapter without a camera. Its so much that its impressive as hell
I also just thought of something. He's stated in previous videos that, while in the pyramid, the controls are slightly tilted, where angles are subtly changed. The room is curved. Could it be that the camera is angled slightly, and that's why the controls seem off?
4:53 "Look at this gamer!" Pretty much common research when it comes to Stryder's elite skills in Paper Mario. Knowing where to go even if you can't see.
Trouble is it's very easy to grow attached to an intro if they use it for a _very_ long time, rather than changing it every year or so. The day ExoParadigmGamer changes his will be the most painful for me because his original intro is just so creative and fun to listen to.
8:07 The ones that are already in place are probably unique and the rest are moved around and being reused. So they are already at their only use places while the others get thrown around
I just gotta say that Casual Stryder is Precious and this behavior must be remembered for the generations to come... Love the new intro as much as the past one!

Every time I think you’ve done everything you could possibly do with this game, you pull something else that’s endlessly interesting out of your hat, Stryder. Thank you for keeping Paper Mario alive. It’s a precious gift to me.
7:54 the ones that are already loaded in are uniques put in to break up repetition, while the two that seems to be "loaded in" are actually just the same two that keeps teleporting and changing order Just in case someone didn't see it
"I've been playing this game for 19 years" that's how long I've been alive Also, I've never played Paper Mario before, but I'm always so intrigued by your videos. Thank you!
I'm a tad older than you, but I've only played like 4 hours of The Thousand Year Door, but no other paper mario game. I don't like the battle mechanics at all. It's fine to watch and learn about, but not a game I'd like to play.
9:48 I think those are supposed to be panes of glass or something. 10:20 have you tried putting Mario in the room and seeing if the loading zone does anything?
On stream, they decided the squares had something to do with the sun shining through the windows. Also, yes, he did try and the room has no collision whatsoever so he can't even stand in the room.
They're always in 3d. As you might've noticed here, things that appear flat are actually fully three-dimensional models, and it's only thanks to the fixed camera that the illusion works. I'm not trying to "um technically" you ftr I'm just saying it's probably less exciting than you'd think
I’m well aware on how that games visual style works with the illusion of 2D. I was curious to see the cutscenes showing in a 3D angle, as oppose to being shown in 2D. All though it might not be as exciting as I envision it, I like seeing games I love in a different way. If that makes any sense
It's really cool how they managed to make a fully 3D world using what appears to be layered 2D objects at different angles. I've gotten a lot of ideas for 3D After Effects scenes from watching this!
Star Haven being loaded above Mario while he falls is actually a pretty cool find. Maybe it was originally intended for you to go to Star Haven and stop Bowser before being beaten and starting the adventure. Probably changed so it feels more familiar with the whole being invited to the castle thing before diverging and becoming more interesting. Plus it makes arriving at Star Haven feel even cooler.
8:05 My guess as to why there's certain terrain already spawned is the instances where the tracks are already loaded is because they have unique features to them so they load first, whereas the other ones were identical and spawned gradually. Like Stryder said, savin' memory. But still adding some different features to the background when they could've done just fine. Idk, just neat tiny little unseen details that I find really cool.
I like to imagine that Mario is just really aggressively serious about this being HIS game, so he's in every shot of every scene because this is Paper MARIO dammit
