Top 10 Softlock Glitches in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door

- Softlocks are among the most frustrating glitches to encounter in casual playthroughs and speedruns alike, but there's still an interesting aspect in how they can be performed. Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door is not necessarily my area of expertise, but the dedicated community of speedrunners and glitch hunters including SolidifiedGaming, Really_Tall, Malleo, Almo, and Sjorec have been analyzing this game for years. Thanks to their continued efforts, there are enough glitches to make a second Top 10 video, as well as a few potential one-offs in the future.
I would also like to dedicate special thanks to my friend Malleo for informing me of these softlocks and recording footage for this video. Flavio is that sort of person who's only good at parties, not hanging out with regularly. He's got hella stories, but they're 99% about him and he often repeats himself and/or exaggerates half of it.

I ran into #8 during a normal playthrough before and was very confused as to why nothing was happening. Later learned I was just too fast for the game to handle :P

My favorite soft lock is one I found myself. It takes advantage of fish glitch and is hard to make happen. I was trying to play chapter 6 twice and the way I did it was with the fish glitch and accessing it early, then I went to chapter 5 and found a switch in keelhal key, which made me skip ever needing flavio in my party, the first half of the pirates grotto, and i fought Cortez out of order from the smorgs. So after I was finished with that chapter, I played the game normally and saved aboard the train in a chapter 6 state. Little did I know locked doors would have no lock but would be locked. So when I made it to the second train station, the game softlocked and I couldn’t progress at all. I need to get footage of it because I haven’t seen it anywhere

He hasn’t uploaded actual content in so long he went off my recommended, and a litterally forgot he exists, then I saw this vid and I remembered that he is my favorite channel in the world 😍
I think my favorite is probably the Vivian Pause glitch, or one of the Text Storage Softlocks! I didn't even know those were things in the game, much less means to softlock it!

In world 3-1, there is a koopa who uses a giant star. When he hit the block and the star starts jumping towards him, use the home button twice.
The star will jump back and forth forever, on the block it came from

That reminds me, I stumbled upon a soft lock the other day! I was doing glitches with flavio when I found it and the soft lock is very unforgiving. Here is how it’s done
1. Preform the flavio glitch as normal until you complete chapter 6.
2. Go back to chapter 5 and find the room just after the waterfall where there’s a save block. There if you climb the wall or the platforms leading to the top of the room, the door there should be open, but the block to open it still remains. Hit that block with bobery.
3. Play chapter 5 until you get to the part where the boat is shooting Mario and flavio must return his red skull to Cortez. After the cutscene, don’t return to Cortez, rather go back to the blue pipe from the flavio glitch and go back to the end of chapter 6 through the blue pipe.
4. Board the train
It took me a while to realize it was a softcover because the chapter plays as normal. When you get to the second (or first station in this case) you should notice there’s no lock on the door. There is no way to bypass this soft lock that I know of. I found it trying to do chapter 6 twice. If you don’t board the train and instead go get the next crystal star, you basically will play the chapters as 1 2 3 4 6 5 7 8

I had a game breaking glitch in the punie area one time. For whatever reason, one of the punies(idk how it's spelled) disappeared from my game. I was stuck at 100/101 and couldn't proceed. I spent 2 hours searching for the last one, but never managed to find it anywhere and because of that, I think that somehow it was just deleted from existence.
Nobody tell him the elder has a button to automatically recall all punies, and that the 101th is optional
hah this video was perfect timing as I just got soft locked thanks to your last ppttyd glitch video. so I just got ttyd again and wanted to try out the ms mows glitch in the sewer area with all the warp pipes. so eventually I succeeded and I had just speedrunned the game to chapter 5 when I used ms mowz to enter the pipe to moshley and then hit a save block because I'm stupid. after hitting the save block I went to the museum to get the crystal star but there was a problem, in order to get that crystal star you need the spring boots you get from a stop on the train but by using the warp pipe I bypassed the train and thus the spring boots, so I could never get the crystal star, and then because it handles progress like it did in the original paper mario my state was set to after talking and getting the train ticket from Don pinata but I never got one. thus I could never get to the stop again thus softlocking me.
That happened to me too! I was soooo annoyed!
Ughhh TTYD is my childhood, do some more glitch videos on this game keep up the good work Stryder :3

This is TTYD, The original crashed 2069 times during this video.
PP64 ran at 30FPS. TTYD was 60FPS.
So, that first glitch with the hammer: what happens if an enemy walks into the hammer? Will the loop exit after battle?

I don't know if this counts as a soft lock, but if you save during the countdown in the tree before the boss fight with Lord Crump in Chapter 2, it's possible to get permanently stuck with no way to disable the countdown if there isn't enough time left to get through all the dialog before Crump disables it. The only way to escape this situation is to start a brand new save file.

I grew up with paper Mario and I had just about forgotten about the series until I found your channel about a year ago. I enjoyed your content so much that it actually rekindled my love for the games again for the first time in ages.

Paper Mario and Pokemon are very similar. Playing the game normally, it'll be fine. But search for glitches and the cracks will show themselves.
Mike G We aren't talking about casual playthroughs here, this is glitch hunting and it takes down speedrun times by a ton. Honestly not sure where the speedrun of ttyd would be without some big skip glitches that cut down the time by hours.

That's what I said! People insist that because there are glitches at all, no matter how difficult, precise, obtuse and never found in normal playthroughs they are. All of a sudden the game is considered a buggy piece of shit mess. That is ridiculous, In my opinion glitches should be seen as unintended extras, without glitches I wouldn't have been able to enter AND beat the shadow, forest and even the water temple in zelda OOT with KID LINK!(shameless channel plus here)aside from easily activated game breaking glitches.

Naruto: the broken bonds for the xbox 360 had one of the worse game breaking glitches I've ever seen,
and it's UNBELIEVABLY easy to trigger. In the game you could spar with various people in your village and for some retarded reason if you did so with the demon fox scroll equipped(an unlockable form that's one of the two most powerful forms in the game) you end up under the map when the match is over, you will keep falling and spawning there and the worse part... THE FREAKING GAME AUTO SAVES THERE!!!
In short, yeah, if you haven't been keeping up on your manual saves you might lose HOURS of progress, I myself ended up losing over three hours and also had to unlock the damn demon fox scroll over again which you need to fight the other most powerful character for.
TLDR: people should be happy that these games usually only have glitches that require almost TAS levels of precision.
Glitchy, you get it. Among my favorites are Flavio as a follower in TTYD, either the Vibrating Box or the Skewed object glitch from Littlebigplanet 2 & 3, and the patched out-of-bounds glitch from Splatoon.
All of them pretty much useless, except from an entertainment standpoint.
(Although LBP 3 IS actually a buggy mess, I still love it for what it is.)

Pikasack iirc TH-cam runs in 60fps and TTYD is only 30, so it looks smoother on here than what we're used to

one softlock happen to me in yugioh gx the beginning of destiny for ps2, if Alexis use Astral Barrier (it make ur monster attack the card owner life point directly) on ur Elemental Wildheart (he's unaffected by card effect), Alexis attempts to make wildheart attack directly but it had no affect and the AI just can't seem to stop using the trap effect despite the monster's effect

Vivian was never a man. It was simply an insult towards her by Beldam, who is probably just jealous of her being the prettiest of the three. Calling a woman a man is a very rude insult in Japan. Goombella was probably just confused about the joke when she said that Vivian was both the youngest sister and brother in her tattle. The joke was removed in other regions because Nintendo of America knew it would be misunderstood in the states.

PM64 remains my overall focus, but playing with TTYD for a bit is a nice change of pace

A couple of months ago I commented on one of Stryder's videos about how he should get a life and spending so much effort finding glitches is a waste of time. Since then, I have watched every Stryder video and now find them strangely satisfying
