I feel like this is just a test of patience more than anything else. There’s nothing actually stopping you from just bouncing for a few hours on every star.
But then you if you screw something up you have to start over. The challenge is finding the strategy with the best chance of success for time invested, then developing the skill to pull it off.
I mean, you can make use of slow but easy cheeses in most games. The entire genre of RPGs can be made into a cake-walk by just grinding until you're super-strong and therefore not needing any strategy in battle. But that's boring.
@@ManoredRed That's actually a thing in game design. Game designers have to stop players from "optimizing the fun out of a game".

@@ManoredRed to be fair, time only matters if it's relevant to the challenge. If not relevant, then any method is considered viable, even if slow. Also, while a lot of games do provide "easier" ways to beat the game and its challenges, there are quite a few that either simply don't or at least include harder challenges that do require you to optimize and have a certain level of skill, including many RPGs.
In any case, games are meant to be fun and to be beaten by the average player so most aren't made terribly difficult and will give multiple methods of beating challenges, including slower routes that require patience.
@@seandobbins2231 I think time becomes relevant to the challenge when it requires you to continuously perform an action correctly for a very long time, because then it asks the question of whenever its feasible for a human to do so. Humans make mistakes, specially when exhaustion is added in.

I am curious how this game can handle 126,000 moving items Goombas in general. :) I wonder if he modded his N64, or used a PC emulator (he owns the game).

I think he had to mod it, the previous goomba video he said that the actual game would crash if it loaded that many entities at once.

@@goreobsessed2308 other way around. Getting it to work with collision would make this impossible, with the game calculating that much math at once.
It's the same reason volumetric fluid simulations are tough to run- tons of tiny particles and their collisions
Probably was just using an insanely strong emulator. Plus, yeah 126,000 is a big number, but compared to some other entities goomba’s aren’t exactly the most advanced or anything.
the thing is... it cant. super mario 64's engine only has 240 object slots. the game has been modded to fundamentally change the engine
There are no “referenced checkpoints” in the Cool Cool Mountain slide. The game determines whether you’ve cheated or not by seeing if you’ve been the air for 2 seconds or more, or if you’ve taken the shortcut.

How does it check if you used the shortcut without a checkpoint
@@dormanius perhaps the shortcut doesn't count as being on the slide, and thus you're off the slide too long? Or there's a trigger on the entrance.
@@dormanius There’s a trigger in the shortcut area that lets the penguin know you cheated.

I'm surprised the game can handle this at all without exploding. I guess its due to all the resource-saving features the devs loaded into the game, such as cancelling interactions above a certain limit, only spawning in nearby enemies, etc.
Also, I saw Mario turn into the "long distance model" a few times when the camera was close. I guess the large Goomba volume made the game a little savings-happy in that regard.

This has to be one of the few challenges I've seen where the ghost house isn't rendered almost completely inoperable.
10:20 Fun fact! The burn timer ticks down faster while airborne, but as you see here the burn won't end until you actually land. Jumping like a madman can sometimes let you only take 2 wedges' worth of burn damage (at least in a relatively goomba-free map).

That was actually more entertaining than when you flooded every single level. What was interesting is having all those goombas around, at least to me, takes away that very isolated and melancholy feeling that Mario 64 has in general- Peach’s Castle is actually a very populated and vibrant place with all those crazy goombas running around. Plus they are enemies that are kinda silly and wacky, which helps bring back that light-hearted mood that most Mario games have.
Seeing all those coins swarm the water levels was really cool, and my eyes completely lit up when I saw how many goombas there were around Wiggler. Keep up the good work!

A note about the poles.
The poles don’t spawn until after Bowser’s Sub is gone, so you need to beat the second Bowser before fully completing Dire Dire Docks.

The penguin race doesn’t use checkpoint to determine that you cheated. It keeps track of how long you were in the air. If you are idk like 3-4 seconds in the air it says you cheated. (Or you use the shortcut. Then it will also say you cheated)
Great vid! PS the poles in Dire Dire docks only spawn after you beat Bowser in the fire sea, so that star is most likely possible as well.

Actually, it's the opposite- you never know pain until you meet someone who wants to hurt you, and takes pleasure in it. If you pinch yourself, eventually it will hurt too much to continue, so you stop. But someone else won't have those same restrictions.
