4:35 I can’t put my finger on exactly why, but I absolutely love the delivery of that “or you can just git gud” maybe it’s because it just catches me off guard with how formal you usually are, or maybe it just somehow has the absolute perfect amount of sass to it, but whatever the case it’s so funny to me.
Hey guys! I recently completed Paper Mario: Pro Mode on my Twitch livestream. It's a mod that greatly increases the game's difficulty. Had some pretty cool moments! I'm planning to upload a Pro Mode highlight video in addition to a "traditional" glitch video for October. On stream, we're now attempting Paper Mario: Master Quest, an even more absurdly challenging hack of the game. I ran out of end screen panels for the end of this video lol, so here's the link: twitch.tv/Stryder7x
Me: "oh look stryder has posted a video about technical stuff in paper mario" Stryder: "this hammer thing i do in loading zones is just to show im a paper mario god nbd"
10:00 -- youve demonstrated one of my Favorite properties of Paper Mario: his total deadpan expression, no matter whats happening in the overworld...when i used to play PM64 (i only played it on the N64, when it was the 'most recent Mario game', so yes im a filthy Casual lol) i would often 'machinimatize' (machinimize? whatever, "Act Out") with Mario...a lot of situations in the story deserve a '...are you Kidding me??' kind of reaction, which is conveyed nicely by blankly staring one way, doing a quick 180, and then back again, before moving on to the next objective...in a way, it kinda adds to the immersion of the game, since My Thoughts of "...did that just happen?" seem to be integrated into Mario's head, and it makes it look like HE'S the one questioning life...
8-bit Mario as an Air Bender. That's why he kept the wind from the spin dash after transforming. On a more serious not, amazing video! I miss Paper Mario a lot. It's my favorite game of all time.
'Wow! this was super cool!' and, 'Wow! You're really good at the game!' and all that but... There's an 8 bit easter-egg? Seriously, I never knew it was a thing. I knew about it in TTYD, but, wow.
Since swag hammering/jumping using the loading zones was brought up, I figure I'll add that you can also do "Dive Swags" on the water loading zones with Susie. When you do, the diving sound effect gets prolonged so that you hear it even after the next room loads in.
This is actually my favorite video of yours now. Explaining technical stuff that I might not have noticed is exactly what I subscribed for! Let’s hope this doesn’t make a ton of people ask why runners aren’t wall-cancelling in every room though. Lmao
The spindash is one of the things I missed the most in PM2. A ton of games suffer from boring movement options and the spindash+ability to cancel it with jumps or small ledges was a great way to make it so that movement is more involved and you never feel like you're just mundanely holding the analog stick waiting for Mario to get from point A to point B.
Good lord, I cannot even begin to explain how near and dear this game is to my heart. Paper Mario and Paper Mario TTYD are definitely in my top three favourite games of all time! These videos always keep me coming back to the games and learning new things even though I can't usually do a lot of the strategies that you highlight in your videos lol. I love your content and I hope you keep making videos on these games for a good while.
1:52 Note about this chapter for new people: in the TTYD remake, environmental hazards _can_ kill Mario, I learned this by accident during chapter 5 and wasted a life shroom as a result (I hadn't saved in a bit either so I just bit the bullet)
2:58 Now that you mention the move name, I think it might've been removed in every PM game onward since the move itself is called "Spin Dash", which is also the name of one of Sonic's staple moves, first introduced in Sonic 2. In theory, Nintendo would have to pay Sega royalties had the former kept the move in the later games, right?
I was thinking you must play Melee by the terms you're using (crouch cancelling, movement options, etc) but when I heard you mention Fox's short hops I was like yeah it's confirmed, anybody who likes the technical aspect of gaming almost always ends up being a fan of Melee lmfao.
Love your vids and I am so glad I found this channel. Being able to find another way to love this game has been amazing and I've started using glitches for fun on my replays because of you.
The hammer input reminds me of how you can skid into the load zones in a house or other building, in Animal Crossing. If you're running and flip the control stick so that you'd be running in the opposite way where you were going, the player will skid to a stop before running in the new direction. This skid carries momentum, so if you are fast enough you can skid *into* the load zones while in a building, such as the entrance to Nook's Cranny or your house; your character will face the direction of your skid (which is usually north, but can be other directions), and then correct themselves as they leave the house. I've known of this feature since Wild World, and it still works in New Horizons.
If only more videos like this were just as detailed as this one, such as sonic 3 and knuckles and a bunch more. Excellent video Stryder, never fail to impress.
Have you considered making a video about Paper Mario on the switch N64 expansion pack? Curious if many tricks work or if its virtually unplayable (for a speed runner)
Hey Stryder. Quick question on peach%. I don't know if this has been investigated or not, Are badges on Mario also equipped on Peach? Because if they were I was thinking it might be possible to get past the bullet blasters in bowsers castle with sheer luck with the lucky day badge. It would be interesting.
The normal spin cancels, short hops, and crouch cancel are all things I use regularly in casual play. The rest of this stuff I don't, and most of then I haven't even heard of!
3:43 Slight correction. In Melee, Fox has three frames, or one twentieth of a second, to perform a short hop. This only makes the speed of the short hop in Paper Mario more impressive.
I need to verify this again with TAS but it seems a lot of people think the jump squat (3 frames for Fox) is equivalent with the input window for short hopping. Always thought it was a 2 frame window, and some old smashboards threads say that as well. Though I’d be happy to accept that short hopping is more difficult in Paper Mario lol
1:15 An Action Command within an Action Command... Paper Mario has more layers than Inception! 2:40 The Fire Bar gets down with it on the dance floor, too. Another advantage of the cancel! 3:51 Paper Mario's timing windows are comparable to Melee. Unsurprising at this point, I guess.
I had no idea of these techniques since I don't watch Paper Mario 64 speed runs. That's crazy. Almost on par with Quake's repertoire of movement tricks.

Fox jump squat is 3 frames in 60 FPS, so doing the lowest possible jump with Mario is actually slightly harder than short hopping as Fox
I was gonna say, theres no way its the same level. Short hopping with fox consistently is just a matter of like 10 minutes of practice
