Finally someone on TH-cam that teaches people how to do it right. Down to the correct place and angle to cut the tube. The lines on the tip are there for a reason people.
As a brand new DIY’ee with the least level home in the world, I appreciate you showing how to fix the gaps. Thank you for the video.
A lot of people give people shit for using caulk, and these techniques shown here, but honestly, I think using caulk on trim to close that gap, and paint to finish is better looking than seeing a tiny gap. It ties everything "together" and from ceiling to floor it's seemless.
Everyone uses caulking. Who are these weirdos.
@@randygreen6652 Right lol
DAP pink plastic-wood putty-x is the best I ever used, dries fast and easy to sand, also strong.
Putty, caulk, and paint. Make a carpenter what he ain't.
get a big sponge and a pail of water and wipe your filler down before letting it dry, you will save tons of time on sanding.
This reinforced my confidence to finish the job. Thank you!
A little caulk & some paint can hide most flaws. Good job. Informative video.
Appreciate it!
Little caulk and little paint makes me the carpenter that i ain't
Beautiful job
I refinished my crappy baseboards that were nearly impossible to remove with dry dex. Gave them a skim coat, sanded and painted. They look so much better. I would have removed the baseboards but I live in an old house and the drywall was installed over the old baseboards so they were really difficult to get out. Dry Dex saved the day.
I'm sure they look great!
Thank you for this!
I would love to see a video where you explain the different types of caulks and sealers, including where you would use each (baseboard holes, baseboard gaps, wall holes, wall cracks, sinks, tubs, showers, countertops, etc.) and WHY you use each for a particular application/location.
Also, your pup is tuuuuute!
Thanks! Great suggestion for another video. I do have a video coming soon on patching various drywall holes and patching crown but its caulk and sealers is an animal in itself. As a general rule, fixed holes, where there is no movement (nail hole, patches ) you can use drydex, wood filller, spackle, drywall mud etc and for corners or joints (between same material or different materials) you want to use a caulk, and then a rabbit hole opens up for wet/dry locations and brands...
Pup is a handful!
Thanks for the comment! Appreciate the feedback.
I know your comment was over a year ago so hopefully this isn’t too late for your projects. The funny carpenter on youtube is funny, gets to the point and explains in detail who, what, where, when & why.
Wow GREAT video! Thanks for sharing this!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you for the video!
Question - at what point you will use wood putty to baseboard board or window trim
Perfect vid for what I was looking for
Thank you! Hopefully it was useful!
I recommend Alex 230/Dynaflex or Towertech II caulking. Stuff is nearly as good as silicone but as workable as painters caulking.
Great work
The more nails you put in the better it holds, that’s atleast what I been told :)
Man, talking about the spackling saying it was pink inside, then using the caulk and saying moist finger....I miss her 😩
I've always used drywall mud. Sands very easy to aquire trim detail.
Don't use premixed to fill nail recesses, use the powered (hot) mud. It does not shrink as much as premixed and dries fast. If done right, no sanding is needed. Apply with finger, wipe off excess with damp rag.
I can sleep tonight knowing what I've learned from you.
What about gaps at the outside corners, when using prefab Bullnose? I have small gaps, should I use caulking or wood filler?
On outside corners always filler & sand it down to match the grooves. Good luck!
Teach a man to cope and he'll never make another bad mitre
Wiser words have never been spoken!
I've never coped before. Is it difficult? been debating on knocking out new trim in the house but I heard a coping saw is a good tool to get good lines and gaps.
@@Chris.Rhodes depends on how detailed the trim is. Less detailed the easier it is to cop. You could also use an angle grinder or dremel
So true. When I install trim I cut two small pieces at a 45 and check all the inside corners for the ones I’ll be coping. Outside I measure with an angle finder.
I’ve seen more than a few coped corners that looked like they were cut with an electric beaver.
That's me just going to town with the nail gun lol!
How did you get footage from my remodel there in the opening?
😂😂
Por esta razón tengo desgaste de dedos, naaa es broma, buen trabajo ❤️❤️
Hahaha! Yo también, Gracias!
Why would you miter the corners. If you do miter the corners your best putting the filler on then push the two together then you know the filler is well in there . Just my opinion. Good video
Yea, good tip! (Some cannot cope)
@@xacresestate ya I’ve learned that I can’t.. hahaha. Atleast it’s a lil difficult with a miter saw that only laws one way… my mind doesn’t want to make sense of how to reverse a back cut for an inside corner… lol. Pretty wild when a miter would be easier in my mind…
what type of grit sand paper your're using?
Good question! 220 at first then finish off with 400. Good luck!
Beginning is hilarious my guy
Thanks, still trying to get the hang of the semi auto 😂😂
Thanks for much super vido
I am so confused on what DAP product to use, even their site is site. They recommend Alex Plus Spackling. Do you have any experience with that ? Curious if you compared the two. Obviously the drying indicator is great!
Hi there, Yes, Alex plus spackling and drydex are really interchangeable. Both essentially do the same thing, just personal preference for drydex. I would use either on nail holes, outside corner trim, & minor drywall repair, always caulk inside corners, 2 mating pieces or trim to drywall gaps. Best thing to do is try all and find one that suites you, good thing about all DAP products is its easily removable if needed ha ha. Good luck with the project
If you did the trim right, and notch out the receiving part; makes a big difference.
Has "alex" caulking changed its formula? I only ask because several years ago everyone didn't like it because it shrank and cracked over time. Is it better now?
No it hasn’t improved. Dap-Dynaflex is very good though. But most people just go for the cheapest stuff they can get, which is Alex.
1 application used to be good years ago, now most of the time you need to do a 2nd application.
With respect, I heard that brooms enjoy getting rid of Drydex. Is there a way to prevent this from happening, please? Thanks.
No issues here but i would paint it to add a little more rigidity and help keep it all together.
GL!
A little caulk a little paint makes a carpenter what he aint
I always said do your best caulk the rest
instead of spackling can I use joint compound?
Yes, it will take alittle longer to dry but not much
@@noahgarrett9555 ok thx bro
alex plus always cracks on me no matter how much or how little i put on
Use Nitrate Gloves when doing the caulk lines with your finger. You'll thank me for not having to clean the caulk off your hands after job.
And honestly it looks way nicer
Dap has become very disappointing to me. The shrinkage is unbelievable and I usually have to caulk twice. Think I will go back to white lightning!
And it can be difficult filling a shallow shrinkage gap a second time with caulking as it doesn’t level the same, etc.
Do your best and caulk the rest!!!
haha love it!
A squeeze tube! LOL
That's exactly what I did at home lol
Wood filler is by far the best way to fix
plyers
Hey if you know how to cope your corners dont have to caulk
Agreed!
LOL
.
Lmao
why not just put caulk in the nail holes?
Tends to shrink and need to reapply, I'd rather over DAP and sand flush vs applying caulk 2 times. GL!
@@xacresestate thanks. I just caulked everything, it looks great right afterwards but yeah was wondering how it will look once dried. I'll have to check it
Audio is too low
Coping it you wouldn't need caulk except nail holes
You're not a finish carpenter by trade, I hope?!
No, just do it for fun on weekends ;)

That's a good thing!

Well i see a dude making a video trying to help people with their DIY projects and you decide to be a total asshat. So yea. That's about it. Hopefully you are a little nicer to people when you arent hiding behind a screen. Otherwise i feel sorry for the people who are stuck with ya. Have a lovely day.
Pretty scrappy cut on test trim.Bottom line
Total rookie statis... use crawfords putty for holes, and a spring tool for nails...
Look it up.
Spring tool is awesome. Will try out Crawfords. Thx
Why use that stupid gun to fire the nails in? Just use a decent panel pin and knock it in slightly lower than flush. You don't need so many nails and once you undercoat and paint you don't see them. Use a hammer the old fashioned way, so much better than these quick apparently time saving nail guns.
Don't take advise from someone who doesn't cope their moulding and uses a curved claw hammer.
Agreed! ....or use the pneumatic nailer the way he does, terrible.
@@xacresestate any hack job can be an internet star, only sucker's will believe you
@@msm624 Not really sure what you mean here but thanks for the suggestion, I will add 'how to cope' video to the list, this however is not a coping video. Thanks for the comment either way.
@@xacresestate exactly so cope the trim and you won't have any gaps to fill. Im just saying stop posting videos on things you dont know
@@msm624 If you're a pro and cope the trim instead of simple miters, good for you. I'm pretty sure he knows how. But for the rest of us DIY'ers, or those who have to deal with existing trim installation and clean it up, this video is useful and I'm glad he took the time to make it. Unlike you, just coming along with some snarky, useless comment.
Flood it
first thing you want to do is learn how to cut an inside corner on baseboard,NOT a mitre
You’ll never finish a house with that spackling lmao regular putty orange can
this is a terrible job. Why. would you sand the profile of the base bolding down?
Dude, get a caulk gun. Caulk is much more expensive in those little tubes.
The BEST method? Not fuck it up in the first place.
