A painter friend of mine showed me a caulking trick that utilizes the some of the tips used in this video. This was done after walls were painted and white painted baseboards installed. As in the video, you cut a small angle cut on tip (except you use needle nose pliers and pinch the tip to make the opening smaller). Then you place and angle the gun on the baseboard and your wet finger at the tip of the gun. You then squeeze the trigger and drag the gun along the baseboard with your finger at a quick space that covers around 2 - 3ft. Due to the small opening and your finger running with the gun , it lays down the caulk in one motion. You may have to rerun areas if there are gaps that were not completely filled. Try it.

I like my caulking painted so I clean & caulk first, paint last because just after a few years of exposure the caulking turns a different color than the paint... especially that Paintable painters caulk. I've been working on houses since the late 60s.

This is really helpful. I'm putting new base board down in our bathroom and I followed your instructions and it worked great. I think the big one that helped was the tip to run a small amount, and then do it again if needed to fill larger gaps. I had some pretty big gaps at times, but now using your approach it isn't a mess and it all looks so clean and profession. Thanks again for the great video.

I need to point out the gap from the floor to the baseboard is a great opening for insects to invade your house from inside the walls. Fill those gaps with caulking as well as any gaps in electrical and plumbing coming through the walls, and you will see far less insects in your house.

The gap between base and floor should have quarter round or shoe moulding which is flexible enough to conform to irregular gaps along the bottom of base. paint quarter round prior to installation. Then caulk crack between base and quarter round leaving the floor uncaulked for expansion and contraction. Been out of the business for a while and will pick up this Dap stretch and try it out.

Great video, a few additional tips, if you are doing a lot of caulking, like filling gaps in a shed, etc...buy a powered caulker, caulking a lot is tough on the hands. Instead of using caulk caps, if you are wearing nitrile gloves while caulking, at the end pull off the pinky finger, put it over the cap and wrap it with a little masking tape.

Nice video…. To address the excess calking problem 11:00 …. I suggest ( IF I make that mistake) …. Instead of running your finger the whole length and collecting a bunch of caulk ,,, I start from the middle and do half in one direction (moving away) then the opposite side (moving the opposite way). This way I pick up less calk and carry the excess caulk to finish more length. If it was a really big line you could do it 3 equal swipes (middle last) … this will prevent caulk from laying high and low and save the mess/waste. It happens

    • @curiouscat3384

One day I advised a coworker to wet his finger and run his finger to clean up the goop and he thought I was kidding. So not taking my advise my coworker's chalking on the trimwork turned out really sloppy and the next day our supervisor was pretty upset. Finish work has to look professional for all you newbies. Takes practice to get good at chalking. I usually use a nail to plug up the opening in the chaulk. Using a moist rag is helpful in wiping off the access. A good chaulk job makes a good impression on you. You don't want to get bad impression on these finish work. Good chaulk work keeps the bugs out of the crevices of baseboards and trimwork.

A contractor friend of mine showed me (a rank amateur) a little trick. Put blue tape on the wall at exactly the height of the baseboard. 2 or 3 foot sections at a time. Apply the caulk, do the finger thing, clean off the base board with a damp rag and immediately remove the blue tape. Do not let the caulk dry. IT CAME OUT BEAUTIFUL. There are actually videos on that now. Being 75, I learned that 20 years before YT. Works like a charm.

Hi, regarding the caulk caps (near the end of the video) for reusing caulking tubes. They don't work very well. Over the years I've tried many methods (including nails) and products but they all don't work well. Recently I found something that works every time, and it's free: Clean the tip of the tube, apply a piece of electrician's putty (or any putty that doesn't dry out) over the tip and mold it over the tip to prevent any air from entering the tip. You can also apply some hot glue (if you have it) over the tip. This trick has worked every single time without any gunks of caulking plugging the tip.

Like this guy, I have done a lot of caulking. However, I have never seen the utility of angling the tip. In my experience, it acts as a liability because you are trying to maintain the angle of the tip on the surface. A small hole, the gun held at the right angle and skill at applying the right pressure at the trigger works great. I can apply a nice smooth bead of caulk about as fast as I can walk if the job is such that I can do it upright. I finish out the caulk with a wet rag and my finger much as he does.

That all sounds good, but after 40 years caulking gaps and puttying holes, I've found a simple galvanized finishing screw works simply the best. Screw it and forget it.

This may sound like a stupid question, but do you use that caulk for stained black walnut baseboards and quarter round?

What about caulk at the floor? There are big gaps. Can you do the bottom of the baseboard where it meets the floor? Thank you. You’re very easy to understand. 👍🏻😊

    Good video
When you use a damp rag to wipe the caulk, you should roll the cloth like a ball ) to wipe,
if it's flat it can pull the caulking out.
DIYers don't use 🐸 tape it's the most expensive tape they make, the blue is pricey enough,
the thinner the cheaper too, you don't need inch n quarter wide tape, 1/2 inch will do.

From your good video I learned there are two types of caulking, however I had already just used non paintable SILCONE on some of my trim and baseboards. No, I’m wondering what I’m going to do because I do need to paint over that caulking what are my choices?

Thanks for the video. Question: If I wanted to caulk/seal the gap on the bottom of the baseboard where it meets the floor would I use the same caulking or would I choose a clear one?

    • @Nick-bl1uw
      @Nick-bl1uw ปีที่แล้ว

Not an expert, but none: The clear one will collect all the mess in time and look bad and the latex one , will be imposible to paint and it will look crappy

Just use Tuck Tape to cap any adhesive/silicone bottles. It seals out air. A whole roll will last you a lifetime. I've let tubes sit for months like this and they work perfect with no dried chunks.

My brother taught me to use clear rubbing alcohol on your finger so the caulk will not stick to your finger. It really works! Thanks for your tips to perfectly polish the caulking method!

this is yet again another difference between latex and silicone. wet finger with water for LATEX. Wet finger with ALCOHOL for silicone.

Take it out, and reapply it.
Perhaps it started to turn from cleaning chemicals.
