Why "What Comes After" Was the Perfect Sendoff for Rick Grimes

  • In 2010, a show called The Walking Dead graced our screens about an officer named Rick Grimes trying to navigate his way through the zombie apocalypse. The show was based on a comic series of the same name and everyone knew that Rick Grimes was going to be an incredibly difficult character to cast. He’s not only the protagonist of the series, but he’s a character with multiple different dimensions making him a hero, a villain, and most of the time finding something between the two.

      I disagree, him seeing Sasha represented sacrifice, like in 7x16 where she gave her life to save everyone, and Rick attempted the same in this very Episode.
      Him seeing Carl or Lori would've secured his death.

      Carl or Lori would’ve been great. Sasha doesn’t make any real sense, and you could tell she was the only other actor/actress they could get. The other two cameos were great, though.

    Glenn was the first choice to appear. Because it was Glenn that introduced Rick to the Atlanta group. However, Steven Yeun said no. Sasha was the second choice since Sash sacrificed her life in the finale episode of Season 7. So it’s like:
    Shane = Strength
    Herschel = Wisdom
    Sasha = Sacrifice
    Btw, Carl was never considered.

      No but like how is Rick's send off even considered anything close to a "perfect" send off? Two reasons why Rick dies at the beginning of season 9 was because Andrew Lincoln wanted to spend more time with family and because the producers did not want to pay Chandler Riggs an adult wage. This is what happens to most characters in the show. Laurie Holden got essentially fired after being promised an 8 year contract only after a few years on set DESPITE just buying a house in Atlanta to get on set faster, IronE gets fired because he didn't care much for the show after not being allowed to do essentially anything for 2 whole seasons. The writers essentially makes Beth kill herself attacking Dawn because they write her as a very ignorant/stubborn character, Coleman gets killed literally the same episode to a fucking child zombie, Tom Payne gets killed off after doing nothing for the entirety of season 8.
      And don't get me started on the last 2 seasons. So many scenes are awkwardly written, the plot is just so dislikeable and the cast has slowly been withering away, slowly but surely. So many moments of the show stray so far away from the comic, and in my opinion, when the show follows the comic, like Glenn's death, it creates a memorable and emotional moment, but when the show doesn't follow the comic, like Abrahams death which is immediately followed by Glenn's death, makes it a less memorable moment for Abraham specifically. Had the show followed the comic, Abrahams death would be remembered by many people and have meaning and we'd have him longer on the show which I don't think anyone would say no to. Lets hope they don't screw up the 6 episodes.

That being said Tyrese,Dale, Glen, or maybe even Andrea could have been super exciting to see. Andrea could have seen how Rick choose to save the people of Woodbury and befriended Michonne and told him he hadn't "gone cold" after all

    Glenn definitely should've been the one to replace Sasha. I mean, just imagine Rick wandering thru his hallucination and then someone stands up behind him just to say "Hey.. dumbass" (a callback to literally the very first words Glenn ever said to Rick). Would've been much more satisfying for the last person Rick hallucinates about to be the 1st (technically 2nd if you count Morgan) person that saved his life in the series.

Not because of the story or the characters (i had read past that in the comic so i was already more or less aware), but because of an IRL breakup years ago. Blah blah that was 'our show' and with the breakup I couldn't watch any longer. MAIN POINT: I'm glad i'm getting caught up through your channel, especially because of how in many videos you tell us the "ideal" plot of the episodes despite any jank that occurred in the actual television production.

    I wanna take this moment to have a little fun and try to explain the dynamite. Although the dynamite may be convienet i think it easy to assume that it was going to be used to redirect the herd. If you recall, there was a moment between Rosita and Arat where they were blowing a rock slide to redirect the herd (I believe). So maybe for the same reason, they were transporting the dynamite to its location but got left on the bridge due to the commotion at the campsite (Between Carol and Saviors). Leading to a random box of dynamite being left on their newly built bridge.

    I’m fully convinced the only reason we haven’t seen the helicopters is because of how cheap AMC is. Watching season 10 for the first time it’s incredibly jarring how they’ve “discovered” aerial drone footage.
    I think the reason they went with Sasha instead Carl was because the entire arc of this episode was Rick having to accept that he was going to die and his bridge would be destroyed. He needed to understand that they could rebuild it without him, just like how Sasha had faith that what she did would have an impact despite knowing she would be dead before she ever saw the results. And in the end her sacrifice is what gave our group the upper hand on the saviours in the first place. I think a lot of people forget that about Sasha because it’s a very weirdly paced season and episode. Carl died helping some random guy, there’s not much crossover.

    I think they may have used Herschel, Sasha and Shane for the flashbacks because the last we saw of them, they were Walkers. It almost replaces the final memory of them as 'monsters' and show them who really are and who us, and Rick, should remember them as. People who may have been more fitting, like Glenn, Carl, Andrea, Lori, etcetera were not seen as turned as they were mercy killed before they became Walkers. I don't know, just a weird theory I've been thinking recently! Love these videos!

    I think the reason Sasha makes some sense is because of her sacrifice for them all in season seven, she killed herself to give them an opening, and if anyone remembers, Carl was the only reason Sasha and Tyreese survived long enough to join the group. It wasn't the impact that Sasha let on Rick, more so the impact she left on Carl. She was one of the first people he truly saved and he was there when they saw she was dead, so it does make some sense when you think about it for it to be Sasha in that scene. (It would've been Glenn, but Steven Yeun didn't want to come back, and Carl wasn't even an option after the way they let Chandler Riggs go.) I understand it's not the happy scene we all wanted, but the logistics are all there if you think about it.

In the episode "what comes after", which is ricks last episode in the series, when rick is being taken away in the helicopter, space junk once again plays. this is the last episode in this series that we see rick in. both times when this song plays his fate is very up in the air. this song was in the episodes with the introduction of the main protagonist, and the send off of the main protagonist. it's also a very fitting song, as both time it plays, rick is in the need of help from someone else, he's not able to get out of the situation on his own.

I asked if i could simply shake his hand and thanked him for his performance and overall effect he left on me as hershel. Genuinely a great man. Rest in peace.

    I feel like the Sasha scene should have been Glenn. But, I know he was busy at the time and couldn’t come back. I still feel if it was Glenn, it is more fitting since Glenn did save Rick when he was stuck in the tank.

    Having Lori or Carl instead of Sasha makes more sense as their deaths had a larger impact on Rick, and Lori also matches the theme of sacrificing herself for others, as she died so Judith could live, and Glenn could be in the Hershel flashback to remind Rick of helping others like he did in the start

    It would’ve been way better if Rick saw Glenn in the don’t open dead inside doors, Rick looking around at all the bodies and then hearing “hey dumbass” turning around and seeing Glenn, then Glenn giving this similar speech Sasha does. That would’ve hit SO MUCH HARDER especially due to all of the conflict between Maggie and negan in this episode as well, would’ve been 100x better.

    I don't get how y'all don't know about the Sasha situation. So that's what I got from it that Rick Grimes was so appreciative with what Sasha did for him to start the war against him and Negan. she sacrificed herself for him and the group AKA her family with Rick is a part of and possibly held her high regard for being a reason why they're in the position that they are now otherwise it would have ended that day. So if Sasha was the beginning of a war to bring Rick back from being the scared cowardice version of him. It was fitting for her to send him off saying that you found your family like I did when I sacrificed myself for them

    I always disagreed with Maggie on the "If Rick got his skull bashed in..." She clearly didn't remember that everyone agreed on killing Negan until Carl made Rick realize that killing Negan would worsen not only him but his group. I personally believe that Michonne would go through the same arc(if Carl died still in this hypothetical).

    Carl would have made more sense in terms of fan service as well as influence on Rick... BUT, Sasha actually fits better for the Wizard Of Oz theory... not the characters themselves but that they were the missing parts: Shane - Brains, Hershel - Heart, Sasha - Courage... It can be debated who was what but when zeroed in on what each of them say to Rick, it is unmistakable.

    • @thethriftytypewriter

      @@thethriftytypewriter I honestly don't remember where I heard or possibly if I just imagined it... but Oz references have been infused so much that it's its own trope. Still, it does fit that narrative of point A to point B pretty well.

  • @mistasomen

    1. The river makes a bend I guess, hence Carol and co can divert the walkers sideways (but yeah, not shown on screen)
    2. I guess that Chandler was still in dispute with amc and hence a replacement was needed (Sasha)
    3. The dynamite was talked about 1 or 2 episodes before, it was planned to make a rock collapse to block off a herd (but yeah, not enough set up and why is it on the bridge)
    4. Could be the dynamite made the part of the bridge rick was standing on collapse and he just fell down into the water.

      Sorry to make it into a joke, but you do realize that what you are describing is a hallucination, correct? Even if you are giving it some sort of religious or spiritual context, in the end you are still describing a hallucination.
