In 1991 there was a woman anthropologist who successfully made contact with the islanders and managed to spend time in their tribe and learn about them.
Turns out that they had been extremely hostile to all the previous anthropologist groups trying to make contact with them... because these groups had all been composed entirely of men.
In their eyes, the only logical reason for sending groups made up only of men (to another tribe) was if you were sending warriors to attack them.

Also, they had had contact with missionaries before, about a couple of hundred years before, and been horribly exploited. the fact that a woman had gone to speak to them canceled the forms of exploitation that they had been subjected to. My family has a number of missionaries in it, and there is so much wrong in chau´s mindset and training that it is simply frightening. To deliberately expose these people to the microbes he is carrying is awefull. and hubris. Oh boy.
It would be interesting what would happen if (hypothetical!) a mother and her newborn, preferably of the closest resemblance to the islanders would come to them. I wouldn’t be surprised if the story came to another end
@@im-at-home I think it would have went well back in the days, but I would not want to test that nowadays! They have been constantly harassed and, though they live in a bubble, they probably get lots of pressure from the outside world in both direct and indirect ways too.
They might be even more on the defensive with strangers today!

I don't doubt that they will have been exploited, killed and abused by other people, and would not be surprised at all if they are even MORE hostile towards strangers today than they ever were before.
It can't be easy to try and preserve their ways of life when even the planet itself is drastically shifting under human influence.
I just thought it was an interesting thing to bring up because of the huge contrast in perspectives that stem from these different cultures. Wipe out the memory of a person so that they don't have any notion of how any of the large societies we know of today functions, and have a large group of strangers approach them (with no way to identify anything about them except their gender).
I think most people in that situation would feel safer if the group approaching contained women and children, then if they were entirely composed of men.
The man was incredibly arrogant and had been warned repeatedly against interrupting their way of life. What a tool.

This is why religion is difficult to speak on because of the interpretation of reality. For us, if we go through a situation where we almost die 3 times, we will come to the conclusion that we will probably die if we try again. For him, however, as a Christian it probably empowered him and made him feel like God is protecting him and he is clearly the chosen one to finish this mission.
It's unfortunate he had to learn what logical interpretation of reality means by dying.
I wish people would stop trying to inflict their religion on others.

As a native american I can give 2 points for thought.
1. All native people were forced into Christianity at some point. Forcing people into a cosmic belief they have no desire to have is not only morally wrong, it is disturbing when humans do such an act in others.
2. Covid has shown us how fast a deadly virus can spread. Chau had no idea what microbes he was carrying. He could have committed genocide on an undeserving people. And he didn't care. His lack of moral apathy towards the tribes health makes me feel little sympathy for his fate.
Let's hope the tribe was not exposed to deadly (for them) pathogens. And thank God this happened before Covid.

I see this as basically trespassing. They warned him, others warned him. He still insisted on trying to force his beliefs on them through ego. Sad he died through his own silliness but I don't think anyone should be punished for it.
I don't understand why people say that these indiginous people shoudn't be held responsible for killing someone. Isn't that kind of racist? People act as if they aren't able to understand what's wrong and right. If someone jumps into a tiger's cage we say it wasn't the tiger's fault, he couldn't help it. But they're humans!
@Jonathan Gullett He wasn't just casually walking through their yard. He was continuously forcing himself there when they made it clear he was not welcome. Depending where you are in the world you can defend your home from someone trespassing. especially if they are repeatedly doing it and you have already warned them off. If you'd just let random strangers walk into your home uninvited to do what they like and not put up a fight that's your business.
@@zorrosdog6557 They were defending their home from a trespasser who had already been warned off but continued to try to force his way onto their home. They had also had problems in the past with outsiders bringing viruses onto the island that they had no immunity to. It's not like he was just taking a stroll and they attacked him out of nowhere and stole his wallet.

they even warned him first, they were yelling at him (probably to gtfo) and the kid shot an arrow too which hit his bible, and I think that was a warning shot. He left and after all that he came back, that's when he was killed. It was probably him or them, since he would probably kill all of them with disease.

But still, the deciding factor was that he wanted this for them regardless the potential outcome to either party. Now if that's not a God complex, I'm not sure what is.

Religious folks need to stop deluding themselves that it’s in their right to push their religion on others. Narcissism in action. It’s fine to believe in a magic sky god, but it’s not ok to try to convince or force those beliefs on others, especially in this case.

I'm Christian and I don't really agree with this guy's actions. Everyone agrees that it is good to share good ideas, and there is a good and bad way to do this. That's really all evangelizing is. You share good truths with others.
We all evangelize for ideas we believe are good and true, Dr. Grande is doing this when he shares opinions in his videos, we all do it with our friends regularly. We overstep when we break laws and push ideas on people who do not want them. If I share how my relationship with God has helped me with my friend, that's ok. If I yell at my friend and tell them they are foolish for not believing the same thing as me, I am being sinful and attempting to be better than others.
People converting should be a natural process where people get exposure to the ideas of Christianity and decide to accept them. There's no need to aggressively push ideas on people, they will not respond well, and it's ego that makes people want to push their ideas in this way.

Hearing this, as a former evangelical radical, I would have heard this story and referenced a scripture about persecution, or how in the “last days” Christians would be persecuted for their beliefs, as a reason for martyrdom. I realize now that this is not the case and that Chau was blind to reality. Somehow religion creates a cloud for bad judgment and the persecution is self inflicted.
Though it is tragic that he died, the man was extremely arrogant, in my opinion. He was also abusive in the sense that he did not respect these people's boundaries; he did not fully appreciate that these people had their own way of life, possibly their own belief systems, and it was not his place to force himself on these people. He thought his beliefs were superior to everyone else's. And his lack of humility caused him to disregard the notion that others are competent enough to determine their own paths. It was not his place to impose himself and his ideas on anyone.
I also find him to be either really dumb or unbelievably conceited. He wanted to spread the word of his God to people who he couldn't possibly communicate with. Why would he- not a linguist, or an anthropologist, or an expert in anything that could potentially qualify him to atte2mpt to communicate with these tribesfolk- think he could accomplish his goal?

@Jonathan Gullett To consider the history of North Sentinel Island is very important here. When six individuals were kidnapped by Portman's expedition, the older adults sickened and died, and the children were returned to the island.
While we cannot communicate with them, it seems that they are well aware of a situation where 33% of those who spent a prolonged amount of time with foreigners died of a deadly disease.
Also quite likely that they view any foreign men setting foot on their island as attacking them. Again, we can't ask them, but they may very well have viewed this missionary attempt as a foothold for colonization (as was originally stated above).

The 'training' of the missionaries in the US is just beyond belief. If it wasn't so appalling, it would be laughable. And I grew up amongst Evangelicals. I absolutely put the impetus for this madness at their door. They are ALL finding what they want to find in the Bible.

I've studied the Sentinelese quite a bit- when I saw this headline in the news my heart dropped, I knew what would have happened to him. I wouldn't have thought it needed to be said but there are communities in the world that should NOT be interfered with, for the safety of all parties.

I'm a Christian and understand the call to share the Gospel, but this story grieved me in every direction. His actions seemed naive or deluded at best, sensation seeking, to grandiose or narcissistic. He could have killed them all with contact. I pray for Chau and his family, and these islanders.
The best way to spread the gospel is to live a happy healthy life, lead by example, and respect others.

No, he wasn’t murdered. He was an intruder in someone else’s house, carrying a deadly weapon - microbes. Also, not shooting him would have opened the doors to others wanting to invade the island. The islanders were right to defend themselves. And the family has no right to demand that more people lose their lives in order to retrieve his body, which he so voluntarily relinquished.
It has been known that when evangelists arrive in a tribe, the tribe changes for the worst. It disintegrates & their meaning of life dies.

The Islanders have their own society, they are not part of Indian society and the Indian government is not their government, they have been there long before modern day India existed. He basically committed suicide.
India protects them and leave them alone, there are lots of protected tribes in India. Perhaps you like the Indian government to impose itself on them like how the US and Aussie imposed themselves on the natives. Lots of people in India get killed going into tribal areas and the government does not persicute them.

The fact that he thought he could single handedly learn their language without any field linguistics training to the capacity of being able to translate the Bible (a book written in languages that he himself seemingly could not understand) fairly and accurately into it shows just how naive he really was. Even if they did embrace him and take him in, which was a long shot to begin with, it would taken even a seasoned linguist at the minimum a year to acquire fluency in their language let alone the ability to understand their cultural norms and mores to such an extent as to accurately represent the Bible to them. Reminds me of the 16th century Spanish explorers who believed they had converted hundreds of natives in a single day through baptism, when in reality the natives merely thought the ritual of baptism was a ritualistic form used by the Spanish to say hello lol. So many of these missionary types are so clueless when it comes to the complexities of communicating with isolated or foreign cultures. They think that because their intentions are pure that god will show them exactly how to do it
He spoke Xhosa to them which is an African language which is really dumb. Just because they resemble Africans doesn't mean to speak Xhosa. They are Asian.
My father was a psychologist. He loved to laugh at the way life could be absurd. Dr. Grande's humor reminds me of my father's humor.
As for this young man Chau, I feel sorry for him. He was a young man and his death was a waste. I often get so irritated with these evangelical christians. They don't really care about the earthly pain and suffering they cause so long as their religious agenda is fulfilled. I find their system obnoxious in the extreme.

Attempts at religious conversion are the ultimate conceit. In this case, he may have well have sacrificed himself by plunging into an active volcano. What he did by bothering that tribe, and ignoring known laws, and repeated warnings, was ignorant and selfish.
I listen to these at night as I fall asleep, and this episode had me laughing out loud in the dark like a psychopath right at the wall I share with my housemate.

@Jonathan Gullett indigenous of other areas are observed extensively and been researched. Nomads of Tanzania, pockets of humans in Amazon, and Margaret Meade’s study of Australia’s indigenous to name a few. Some may shoot you with arrow if you get close but amazingly very family oriented.

I am an extremely soft-hearted person, but I have next to zero compassion for Chau. It was *not* murder. He violated their tribal laws as well as the laws of the Indian government, who attempt to protect Sentinelese. And though I’m sorry for his family, I don’t believe he was a true missionary; he was a selfish trespassing adventurer who deserved what he got. Let others take his fate as a cautionary tale.
This young man was arrogant to think that he was somehow entitled to encroach on their home so he could preach to them. Sorry but Chau was out of order - and the outcome, though tragic for Chau's family, was not at all surprising.

Even if I felt that it was a good idea to try and prosecute this case, how could the defendant be made aware of the charges against them? How could they be served? Arrested? Even identified??

There’s actually a really famous missionary named Jim Elliot who went to preach to a group of cannibals in South America. He was killed, but over the course of years, his family and friends that remained helped the cannibals to become Christian and stop their cannibalism. In fact the former cannibalistic tribe went on to preach and make peace with a lot of other indigenous South American tribes after.

I was a missionary for a while in my youth and I see something in this story that I often saw on the mission. People, particularly people from the US, come to do mission work with the idea that they are going to save people, not just spiritually, but often by giving the people things they couldn't get for themselves. They come as the savior themselves and this is the misunderstanding. These people are good hearted and they really do mean well, but it's hard to reach people when you place yourself above them, even if only in your own mind. The greatest gift you can ever give to anyone is to treat then like fellow human beings and the only way to really preach the gospel is to live it. Most of us, even at our best moments, bungle through trying to do this even once we realize that we don't have the power to save anyone on our own or to give them more humanity than they already have.
The way I see the islanders killing this young man is analogous to the way I see someone killing a person who enters into their house unauthorized. To many indigenous people, the land in and of itself is their home and, just like a person might get shot just walking into someone's house uninvited, this young man was entering into a place that these people likely saw in the same way, especially since it was known that they wanted outsiders to leave them alone. I do believe that this young man meant well but those islanders had no way to know that so it's really hard to blame them for killing him when they probably felt quite threatened and, after all, they had chased him off the island twice already so that's like shooting two warning shots, which I don't think the law even asks you to do if someone breaks into your house.

@12:26 I don't think he misinterpreted Christian values at all. He's an Evangelical. It's right in the name. Evangelize your religion to the people who don't know about your religion. There are very few places where people don't know about Christianity. This is an example of how religious beliefs informed his actions that got him killed.

I second this! It was such a clear cut case of misogynistic violence, specifically targeting women.
I’m interested in true crime, and one pattern I’ve noticed from killers who specifically hate and target women, is that they usually have a father who hates women and beats their mother. They develop a hatred for their father, and after the father leaves, it’s only their mom providing and taking care of them.
I have no idea why, but then they grow a hatred for women, despite their father being the source of all their misery in their life. Only thing I can think of, is that they feel “emasculated and inferior” by being disciplined by a woman. But that is of course, an unacceptable rationale.
The shooter was mentally unbalanced. I believe he could 've shot anyone. Actually I'm sick of hearing about this every year on the"anniversary" of this tragedy. Let's move on!
