Have you ever thought about selling your scraps? You could determine a weight for each bag and set a price. I’ve been in many quilt shops that do that and I usually pick one up. Also, if you have a new quilter, that’s buying the fabric for her first quilt maybe Give a bag of scraps to her as a gift. Better than paying money to store. Enjoyed the video. Thank you.
Yes. We sell scraps online and in the store. We even have a corner of the store dedicated to scraps. It’s called the scrap station. The scraps there are color coded. People come and pick out what they want. Online we sell miscellaneous scrap bags.
Now that's a ton of scraps!! 😮 Thanks for all your quilting ideas! I have plastic "boxes" like yours for projects also. They work great. I have a friend who collects the little unusable scraps and uses them for stuffing her things, like doll bodies, draft catchers and other things. I don't feel guilty about getting rid of all the tiny pieces. She uses everything!
That quilt is really attractive! Who knew such diverse fabrics would make such a fun quilt! When I make flying geese blocks, I like to sew corner to corner and then sew 1/2 inch from that line, making a smaller half-square triangle, so I have 2 half-square triangles for each flying geese unit. Consequently, now I have to find a design for small hst's!
Like your crazy flying geese. Suggest that when you sew the 3 1/2 inch square on the 6 1/2 piece that you sew 1/2 inch on the side of the square that will be cut off, then cut down the middle to create a HST that can be used in another quilt. 😊❤
i also like scrappy quilts and i have tons of scraps that i just can't believe i'll ever use up......thanks for sharing your ideas......they're certainly doable!!
I’ve never been e fan of flying geese but you may have just converted me! Wanting to make quilts for my grandsons for 2024 Christmas and these would make great male quilts! Thanks for making things look so easy!!
Last year I made a flying geese quilt using a charm pack and one solid background fabric for all. I loved it, and I love the flying geese (goose?) block. And like some others who've commented, this year I'm all about using my scraps, so this is a great idea.
I am a scrapper and have units in various sizes cut and ready. I'd like to see more ideas on using them into quilts as I make charity quilts to donate each month. Please consider this idea. Thanks, I'm a new subscriber. I like your tone and presentation.
Scraps are one of my favorite ways of making blocks. This one may become my new go to block. I am quite intimidated by flying geese and I recently saw a tutorial where they said to get getter at something you need to repeat and repeat. I always sew with the point up so I can stay on the right side and I like sewing the seam from the middle of the geese not the corner. The other thing I do is fold corner back to make sure it is correct before cutting off the extra. As mentioned doing the extra seam to make a triangle at the time is one step completed and I can put into a project box and save
I am a new subscriber and am interested in learning to quilt since I am now retired. I will check out your website to see what I can find to get started on my quilting journey. I love your scrappy quilt ideas. Since I am not sure how to match up quilting colors, scrappy quilts will be better for me. Thanks for your very helpful videos.
What a great & beautiful idea, so many fabric & no use for them because they don’t match with anything else…. But wow, I love this tutorial, tks for sharing ❤
I was under the impression that making a flying geese quilt would be difficult, so I never looked into it until today when I saw your tutorial and took a chance on it. So glad I did! You've made it look easy and fun! I'm putting it on my list of scrappy quilts I want to make this year. Thanks so much for your step by step tutorial...very clear and easy to follow! 😊
When making the flying geese units, sew a 2nd line of stitches 1/2 inch from the center stitch. When you cut between the stitches, you get a smaller 'sister'HST for another project.
This is making a great quilt! Another possible layout for the flying geese is Dutchman’s Puzzle that”circles” the geese into an attractive block. I also LOVE artbins! I finally treated myself to six of them last year. GREAT gift for myself!
Just found ya! Thanks for helping me decide if I should just toss my scraps and start over, or get back to scrap quilting! I have a strip quilt to finish. I also teach 4-H quilting...this would be great for youth too! 😊 Thanks ❤

Thank you so much! And yes, it’s a lot of work but it sure is fun! I’m hoping everyone is enjoying it as much as I am enjoying making the videos! Penny
I really like this flying geese pattern, for one the squares that you cut to make the flying geese are easy . I love watching your step-by-step videos, they are perfect and you go slow enough to show the process one step at a time. Which I love because later when I go back to watch the video. It's easy to follow along and replicate that quilt block you're making. Another block to add to the list of blocks to make from your videos Thank you.
This is My year to do Scrap quilts! Not my usual! Not my comfort zone, I find them more challenging! But I cannot waste! I have an abundance ( buried) in my sewing room! Thank you for your wonderful tutorials!
Love the fun look of this. I an a new quilter, I don’t have a lot of scraps yet, but I’m sure I will in the future! I see this as a great way to also practice flying geese units. I do also enjoy having a simple project ready to go for a few minutes of sewing. I’m amazed at what can be accomplished in 10-15 minute blocks of time. :)
Loved your tip about starting to sew the squares from top center instead of the bottom corners. Also this video has motivated me to practice flying geese blocks and make a scrappy quilt of them.❤
Love your idea of a scrappy flying geese quilt. Such a fantastic idea. Thank you so much for sharing. Always looking forward to your videos and loving each and every one.
We do that already. People come in and go through the scraps and buy them by the pound and we ship bags of scraps but they seem to never disappear. I think they multiply.
Oh lady, you DO have lots of scraps. Why not have a Girl Scout Troop come and use those scraps and make Project Linus Quilts ?? They will use those scraps up AND earn a sewing Badge. Just a thought. Really enjoy ALL your videos !! ✌🏻♥️
Maybe if you ironed and fold them neatly you wouldn't be so overwhelmed it would also take up less room. I know cause I had that same issue a few months ago .
We run a quilt shop and embroidery shop. There is no time to slow down. We are constantly using the stash and well, it’s just not possible. But they do get used and sold so all is good. 😁
Those triangles are not small at all, 1 1/2 "offcuts are small, may be still usable though. Put them in another box or a ziploc? Do you use squares or triangles as leaders and enders? Are you doing hsts or hourglasses, hsts can make a broken dishes block? Frame or add setting triangles Do a mud-map of your projects, put one in each project as a reminder? It may get forgotten about? List the stages on the back, and cross off what's done if you like lists? The lady at the quilted forest is doing scrap busting on her 2 1/2" strips, maybe some of her ideas will work? Tumblers make an interesting quilt too. One of the ladies makes 4-patches as leaders... she puts light and darker together in pairs, flips one and has opposites. Put four units into a block, do it again bigger... put aside, when you have enough, you have a quilt, whichever size you want. Potato chip blocks or bricks can make quick blocks in a variety of patterns. Cut some stuff up and you, can sit and sew anytime, keep it in a basket near the machine? What about crumb blocks, r a fabric roll from them? A piano key scrappy border or binding roll? You can use units for the next quilt as leaders? Or fancy border blocks for the next stage of the current one, break it up, so it's less tedius. You must have some templates or special rulers to make for speedy cutting? You can use limited pallettes or go completely scrappy. Think up some projects, lay out their mud-maps or patterns and find the fabrics for them, put them in ziplocs until you can start them, when you get a box free? Maybe sell kits? Or you can put scrap bags together to sell. You can sell off-cut triangles too, you have enough fabric already for longer than your lifetime. Do some small gift type bits from project scraps rather than put them back in the bins? There are so many useful things to make from scraps. Including bowls, bags, placemats, pot mitts, cosies and pincushions. Larger square fabric storage bags can hold enough fat quarters or cut pieces and a pattern for a project? You could sell unique gifts in your shop. Do you do wip wednesdays? Maybe Give yourself a day off each week or once a month for sorting and cutting scraps? Is a manic monday a good idea? Could you take a box home to sort in a week or so, In front of a movie or three? Try not to open many at once? You can cut strips to start for projects, and break them down further later on? Put your new kit bags in the scrap bins you empty. You may need years already. That is a valuable resource you have there, albeit some would say just a little bit outta control. Could you cut up the colour coordinated drawer ones into pre-cuts first, then add to them? Easy to grab and try new blocks? Or sell bundles? You can keep the drawers full of grab and go co-ordinated projects too, more will fit in if it's neat pieces. Bundle and tie up the ones you want to go together? Use string cuts? Do all of it a bit at a time, and you have enough for so much fun. Have you discovered design boards yet? Make some yourself in various sizes? You can cut out all your blocks for a quilt, stack all the pieces on a board, and easily carry it to he machine etc, without losing bits, they can fit in a project box too. Put your fnished bocks under it. Make up all the units and restack them, in place on the board, to make sure you get it right or whatever works fot you. Leave it and come back to it, it all works out. Do you like chain piecing and use a blade saver, they go together. Don't give up, take little wins along the way and you will get it all done. All the best. You could make up tops and finished quilts to sell, with binding ready. From all those bins. Then the purchaser could choose batting and backing, get you or someone else to quilt it or do it themselves, rather than do all the quilting yourself in finished order, and make folk wait? You could have baby quilts on hand to finish quick, if non-sewers ask for them, etc.? Do you make a pillow case for a quilt, to store it in and use with it? Have a think and look at your patterns?

Thankyou for this great video. 😊
after sewing on one side of the geese and you cut off the extra, have you ever sewn on the other side of the pencil line and cut apart, getting a HST for another project, rather than tossing those triangles back into a scrap container?
We do! We even have a scrap corner in the shop that people pick through. They are listed on our website as small medium or large bag of scraps. Sewcharmingquiltshop.com

You should bag them up n sell them. Just a few bucks. I have seen it done on line n by a quilt shop in Arizona
We do that! We have a corner on the shop with scraps too.
Cute!
Even your finest scraps can be used inside dog beds!
Yes they can but scraps can make the outside of the beds. Batting or stuffing for inside. 😊
It would be great if you could sell those scraps as scrap bags from your storage
We do that. 😊
U should sell bags of mix scraps in your store.
We did until this week. Someone complained so we took the down. We still offer them in the store.
Watching from Melbourne Australia 🇦🇺 loving your work please the gadget you have on your ruler to hold while cutting I’ve not seen one like this & your rotary cutter that looks amazing & the scissors you used cutting your flying geese, again I’ve not seen this either how can I purchase these items I know our currency exchange will be different but what price would I be looking at plus postage to Australia 🇦🇺 Never done flying geese before. Thankyou for this great video. 😊
Let me check. I’ve never mailed to Australia. Thanks and thanks for watching!
I WOULD SEW THE CUT OF TIANGLES ON THE SHORT SIDE AND TURN THEM INTOHALF SQUARE TRIANGLES
Lots of options and lots of scraps so more will come! 😂
A clever idea for using scraps. Thanks.
Why not cut the big pieces into fat quarters and sell? Donating to the Linus project is another great idea.
We do cut some into fat quarters, daily. We also sell scraps and we also donate to the Linus Project as well as Care Net.
OMG do you want to hire me to come help you make quilts out of your scraps?❤ I have about 1/4 of these scraps in my apartment 😂
Come on!! 😂
after sewing on one side of the geese and you cut off the extra, have you ever sewn on the other side of the pencil line and cut apart, getting a HST for another project, rather than tossing those triangles back into a scrap container?
Yes I have. I didn’t toss them. I’ll use them in my other scrap quilt. 😁
Can you please turn on closed captioning?
Thank you.
I think you do that on your tv. If I’m not right on that I’ll try but I don’t see anything on my end.
That is an option in TH-cam. Look for a box on the lower right, that has the CC inside the box.
@@jilbertb me or her? The one posting or the one watching?
Just asking, but why don't you make scrap bags and sell them???
We do! We even have a scrap corner in the shop that people pick through. They are listed on our website as small medium or large bag of scraps. Sewcharmingquiltshop.com
@@sewcharmingquiltshopwow, I am always looking for scrap bags, just ordered Jordan fabrics 1/2 yd scrap bag. They were having a sale. Do you have an online store?
Wpq! That is a LOT of scraps. 😅
And a lot of fun putting them into quilts! 😁
I hope you sell your scraps online?
We do
❤️👍👍👍❤️👋👋👋❤️
❤️❤️❤️🙌
You can sell scraps by the pound. No way you will ever get through those
Hahahahaha and we have more in the storage closet. Not sure how it ever got to this amount but it sure is fun trying to use it up!
What size rectangle would I need if I wanted to use scrappy 2.5 inch strips? Would it be 2.5x4.5, and two 2.5 inch squares for one goose?
The rectangle is double the size of the square and a 1/2 inch was added to each for the seam allowance
So 2 and 4 with 1/2 inch seam allowance for both should work. 2.5 and 4.5
May I ask where you got the white wire 4 tier units?
With the scraps in the sewing room? IKEA years ago. I don’t remember what they were called.
Thank you ❤️
Hi, I am having problems with my periwinkle square laying flat? Not sure what I'm doing wrong. They are a bit puffy in the middle. Can I send you a pictue
Send it to the shop. Contact info on website or Facebook
