- Eleventh project in a series using 2 1/2 inch strips to make scrappy quilts! This pattern was designed for a colorful jelly roll and a white junior jelly roll. Leftover 2 1/2 inch strips in two different colors will also work!
I chose a high contrast between the two colors. The white grunge junior jelly roll and black background multi-color strips look great together! The finished quilt is striking! A subtle difference between the two colors would end up with a much softer finish.
Here is the link to the pattern used in the video, "Type It" by Zen Chic for Moda. This pattern is one of the many Project Jelly Roll patterns they have available online for free!

Stay to the end to see the finished quilt and how I pieced the backing together!
There is also an update on the 2 1/2 inch scrap bucket situation!
I've challenged myself to do a new project each month using only 2 1/2 inch strips from my scrap buckets. I have always saved leftover strips from projects and cut up small leftover fabric from yardage into 2 1/2 inch strips and put them in a bucket for some "future" project . The future is now! It is time to tame the scrap bucket and use up these strips. I'll always have a scrap bucket of strips because I'm constantly adding to it but I want to get it down to just ONE bucket instead of three...make that seven after the "GREAT SORTING"! This series will last until I'm down to one bucket. Let's be honest, it will take at least 2 years to use up enough strips to make a difference! So join me on this project adventure to use up fabric scraps!
If you don't have leftover strips from other projects to make scrappy quilts, cut up fabrics in your stash into 2 1/2" strips to make the project. No stash of fabric? Head to your local quilt shop and buy a jelly roll or some very pretty fabric to cut into strips! Shop owners are more than happy to help you find the perfect fabric, don't be shy, ask for help if you need it!
Consider joining our Facebook group called "The Quilted Forest Friends". This is the only place you'll have access to exclusive free quilt patterns used in some of our other video projects. It's also lots of fun for members to share their project updates. Here's a link to the group:

That is so awesome! I am going to have to live to 125 years old to do all these wonderful quilts!
😂
Me too
There will be a lot of very old quilters in the world who have to stay around to use up all their stash and scraps😂😂
I have watched each one of these videos probably several times each!! Love these patterns, and your use of scraps is phenomenal!!
I'm not doing the empty bucket dance! I don't want these videos to stop. I love these videos! I have watched most of them over and over again. Beautiful quilt!
I am always happy to see these videos. Thank you for sharing
"lost it before i used it" oh this is sooo relatable!
It looks great, love all the ideas you have come up with
I love this series!
So much drama, with such an easy pattern. ❤❤❤
I love the idea of making a meandering river…❤
This is a great series! I can't wait to see your bucket down to one....... but for now that means we have more videos to still come 😉 Yay!👍 Hope you'll follow up with using up leftover charms and layer cake pieces videos 🙏
Yay! Just found the Simple Moda Love Charm pack tutorial ❤
A great example where a neutral (and any neutral solid would be great! However, I'm a sucker for high contrast white) and really harmonize different fabrics to create a unified look. Thanks for demonstrating!
I really like that quilt! Such fun!
I love this series even though I don't have lots of scraps. Well everything changed today when an old friend turned up with 10 BOXES of fabric. She is a demon quilter, but they are moving and downsizing, so when I mentioned I was learning to quilt she said she had some scraps for me.😮Thank goodness for your channel. I will finally be able to try your cool designs and work through all this material ❤
I too use painters tape at my sewing machine to use as measuring 👍🏻👍🏻. Your quilt turned out beautiful.
Yay! I was so happy to see this video pop up!! My favorite series 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I really needed this series. I’m very inspired to use my strips. I’ve made one of the 2-1/2” patterns already using red, white and blue. When you finally get through all the 2-1/2” strips, I’d love a series on leftover 10” squares and 5” squares that go together quickly but beautifully.
She just started a 5 inch charm series!
I love strip quilts. I find it very relaxing sewing time. And watching you do this is very relaxing as well. Thank you for the great pattern too!
Thank you so much for these videos! I especially love your tip on this video on squaring up after it has been quilted.
I have been watching this series from the beginning. I love it. I am very jealous of the problem you had which started this series. I have a quilt I made from the same problem. This quilt is modern but made with old ideas.
Great quilt and even better are all the hints and tips you share! Thank you!
Very nice. I almost stopped watching the video because I didn’t know what it was going to look like in the end and I was starting to get bored. But then your completion was so fabulous. I was glad I stayed for the whole thing. You were so great to share with us. Thank you.
I love this! Yes, imagine making this in greens with blues in the middle. It would truly look like a lake! Thanks!
The front, backing, and binding play so well together! And changing your thread color as you quilted really made a beautiful result. Cheers!
Wow, that quilt is striking!! Really enjoying this series of quilting videos.
I love the scrappiness'. It`s beautiful
I'll have to watch again, maybe more than once. I love this design and I certainly have enough strips 😂. Thank you for the video 😊
Wow! That looks like a planned quilt. Very nice, interesting, and pretty. Thank you for another wonderful idea.
Love the series and this quilt is so pretty.
I have had this pattern in my book for quite awhile now. Your video has inspired me to actually use it! Really like the contrast of the black and white in your quilt.
This is amazing and such a perfect way to attack those built up left over 2 1/2 inch strips. I just love how you teach and make me feel as if I could tackle any oof your projects. Thanks so much for all the work yo put into your tutorials. They a pleasure to watch.😊
Thanks for another strip quilt. I just love watching these videos.
What a nice, quick and easy quilt! Nice way to use up those spare strips!
What a dynamic quilt from scraps!!!! Great idea!!
Another fun one! I like the idea of making a summery one with sandy tan sides and blue "water" in between. OR grassy sides and appliqued flowers! oye I don't need more UFOs lol. Looking forward to next month!
Great idea!
Love how this turned out. You are very talented.
Your quilt turned out really nice! An easy way to use 2 1/2 " strips.
I love these videos using up the 2 1/2” strips
This is a fun quilt. I made one similar 2 years ago and had the curving problem. You explained the solution so well. Wish I had had some pointers when I first made it, as the challenges to get it straight and flat discouraged me from making more. But now, I can use your tips and try another. Your Iinstructions are so clear and logical. Thank you!
Yay! Good luck to you!
This turned out so nice. Love the cats on the back too! Great job!
I really enjoy this series.
Oh, I made this with a jelly roll of Escargot For It by Hello Lucky for Robert Kaufman and a white jelly roll. It is easier to make than to describe how to make, for sure! So happy to see you make it from scraps.
This was a fun one to make. I made it a few years ago for National Sew a Jelly Roll day.
Another winner!! Thank you! Also, I have the perfect gifted to me strips for this!
This is the first video of yours I’ve seen. I love the quilt you made. Just lovely ❤️
Thank you! Each one of the videos has been amazing 🎉
Great idea to use lots of my extra strips.
Great job!! The quilt is so unique.
I love this pattern! Thank you for sharing this wonderful video. I’d love to try it in blues and sandy colors.
Hooray~! I love your series, thankyou from Australia.
Beautiful! Can't wait to make one like it.
I have absolutely adored these videos. And it's given me so many projects I Want to try :D My collection of 2 1/2 in strips is growing, and I've been picking up some jelly rolls too because I love these
I love this quilt !!! when you first laid it out I thought - "How pretty would it be if the center fabric were blue and the outside fabrics in the green/brown family." Like you, I saw a river !!! thanks ever so much for sharing this lovely pattern and inspiring us all to get out there and quilt !!
Helpful video! I made this quilt before but did not make it the same way you did. Your way was definitely easier!
I’ve got to give this a try. I have a lot of blue & white strips.
Really enjoyed this one.
I really like that one.
Such a cute quilt!!
I keep cheering you on to get your buckets emptied. Wondering which colored buckets you have left. I’ve enjoyed your series.

Looks great
I really like this strip quilt. Thanks for posting.
I love this series, it is my favorite! I am afraid that next month will be the last one😢
Don't worry, I have plenty of strips. These videos will keep on coming! Happy Quilting!
You could make the stripes wider though I'm sure it looks better at 2 1/2 inches ...and a great way to sneak in some not so nice fabrics!! I'm having a think about what colours I could use!!! It would be fun to have lots of different scraps! Love your series ... Thank you for all handy tips!!!
That’s awesome
Thank you!
HAPPY DANCE!!!
Kitties! ❤Cool to see how the pattern works.
Love Love Love this series. This quilt is particularly stunning. Thank you for sharing.
Great idea. Thanks. New subbie 😊
Im really loving this series!
Thanks for sharing I really enjoy your videos
This quilt is gorgeous!
Love the quilt Shelley!!
Love your ideas.
This is awesome 💕
Oh good! When you started doing Charm Pack videos I was thinking you might have used up all your 2.5" strips (haha) and weren't going to do any more projects.
Never fear, more strip videos will appear.
This makes me wish that I had a bin of black strips! I don't have a lot of strips in any one color. I wonder how scrappy strips would work..
❤️❤️❤️❤️
More super scrappy inspiration! 😊
I watch videos with "using up my scraps" very often. I sew tops 2 to 10 hours about 300 days of the year. My stash is 2 totes 1 all blue prints, 1 every other colour prints. 2 totes solids, 1 white & black, 1 colours. I have 1 med/lg tote only with batiks. Every other pc of fabric is in zip bags with a pattern & often backing. How do people amass so many scraps, strips, precut, etc. This puzzles me every time I see a video. I have trouble coming up with curated colour pieces for projects I want to try.
😂❤
