  • Which drives best? I drove the brand new 2023 Honda Pilot and the 2023 Kia Telluride. How do they compare when it comes to driving? I've been trying to purchase a new Telluride but after driving the new 2023 Pilot, did that change my mind on which one to buy?

    All 2023 Pilots except for the Sport have acoustic glass windshields. Only the Touring and Elite have acoustic glass in the driver and passenger doors.

    Kia has one of the best fit and finish in the business, i had them for 20 years, still have my 2010 Kia Borrego with 350,000 km on it, still drives like a champ, rock solid reliable.

    I found the same things as you noted. Even thought they are not sports cars, the Telluride isn’t as composed as the Pilot especiall. My wife loves the Telluride and it appeals to her eyes but she said the Pilot though simple, less flashy was better quality.

    I respect your decision, and your analysis on the two…my wife and I went with Telluride we got the SX Prestige X-Pro, I didn’t even realize the pilot got facelift in 2023, my wife and I steered away from Honda because of the price…but after doing some research this morning surprisingly both top trims are about the same price…we were looking for a van but every time we saw one it was out of our price range….here in southern Cali Hondas tend to be about 10 to 15k more than other companies…MSRP For a top trim pilot was about 53k same for the telluride…we got a Telluride..had for about 3 weeks now, we enjoy it hopefully it remains reliable but only time will tell…the warranty is 10yr/100k and we got the expanded one for bumper to bumper to include electronics 10yr/100k too, Kia-Hyundai/Honda/Toyota vehicles are the best bang for the buck…it comes down to preference and how well you maintain your vehicles….Enjoy your pilot🙂

    Excellent comparison, Drew. I have my choices narrowed down to the Pilot and Telluride as well. I'm glad you pointed out the matte screen on the Honda. That's my preference, too. I'm hoping maybe the Elite trim will cut down on wind noise since it definitely has front row acoustic glass. I know the light steering you're referring to in the Honda. Reminds me of the 87 Accord. One comparison I'll make between the two since the Elite has a panoramic roof is that I prefer that roof vs. the split design in the Telluride. I've also noticed in pics and videos of the Pilot that it does seem higher quality, a more solid looking feel. One thing I do like about the Telluride, however, is the choice of exterior and interior colors. Honda sticks too much to the drab exterior colors for the Pilot. They should offer some of the new CRV colors. Oh, and one last thing, Honda, you should have matched the Kia's hood struts. The prop rod seems a little cheap in comparison.

    • @drewjohnson321
      @drewjohnson321  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! Great points - completely agree about the colors and hood struts. I did read that the Pilot has an aluminum hood, so at least it shouldn't be overly heavy to lift. I've never had a pano sunroof on any vehicle I've owned, so looking forward to that. It comes standard on the Touring as well as the Elite, as does the acoustic laminated front door glass. Hoping that takes a little wind noise away too.

    Great comparison, Drew. Thanks for doing that. I also narrowed my choice to these two vehicles. I will say I'm a Honda guy and have had a 2004 EX-L and a 2016 Elite. I did order the 2023 Pilot Elite and it will arrive in about two months although I have not had a chance to drive one yet. Thanks for the info on the braking and steering as well. I did like the infotainment system on the Kia better but never even thought about the distance to the screen or the lower level. That's a good catch. I do like the ability to have wireless CarPlay because I usually keep an iPod connected for playing music and I want to use my phone for CarPlay navigation. I hope I can do that. I didn't like the traditional sunroof on the Kia and am looking forward to the panoramic roof on the Honda. As far as the sound deadening glass on the Pilot that is only available on the Touring and Elite models. I think both of these are great vehicles so the choice is going to come down to personal preference. One thing I noticed was that my Kia dealer seemed to be adding additional dollars over the MSRP where my Honda dealer is not doing that. Also the Kia was generally not available as soon as the Pilot with a several month waiting period. The Pilot color choices do suck, though. Thanks, again. Great job!

    • @plmn93
      @plmn93 ปีที่แล้ว

      At my dealers Honda was adding $3K and Kia was selling at MSRP, but the wait for a Telluride was 9-14 months. Honda was not taking orders. You put money down to be put on a waiting list to grab whatever Honda allocates them. Turned me off both brands.

    I actually agree and disagree on some points. On one hand from all the reviews done on the midsize SUV category the reviewers thought the steering feel was well weighted. I point this out because yes a lighter steering feeling may be good for a parking lot but not on a long highway road trip where you always have to correct you steering or it may feel more twitchy at speed. I'm looking to test drive the 23 Pilot but I did not observe any difficulty seeing the dash on the telluride with my 2 test drives both sx models (about 1 hr long each). Also the HUD helps with that. I do not believe the pilot has that on any class. What I like about the pilot is the second row removeable seat. That for me is a real value adder. The KIA interior is way classier looking and does look like a better finish to me. I cant understand tho why KIA cant have wireless car play? Serious adder for the Pilot I think. Like you mentioned about the driving assists, I was able to keep my hands off for about 45-50secs on the telluride. This for me is big in terms of getting something from the glove box, handing the kids a snack or just being able to eat a burger. All in all, thank you for the review, looking forward to driving the pilot. Cant wait to see reviews done with both suvs side by side!

      @tsbadorrek ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can get an after-market adapter which plugs into USB to add wireless carplay/android auto. Some of these can also do things like allow you to launch additional apps not offered standard (such as Netflix or other media apps). Obviously would be nicer if they had wireless built in, but not a deal breaker because of the add-on option.

    Did the Pilot's transmission behave well? I have a 2019 Highlander that hates to downshift without heavy input and it drives me nuts. I've driven the Telluride and was really impressed with its smooth transmission. I'm discouraged to hear about the light steering feel on the Pilot. That being said, I put a deposit down on a Touring trim last week.

    • @drewjohnson321
      @drewjohnson321  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The transmission is very smooth in both of them for sure. I didn't notice or specifically test how eager the Pilot was to downshift with minimal throttle, but I can say I never felt like it was not able to pass at highway speeds. I didn't try the different drive modes either; I'd assume being in sport would hold the gears longer and likely downshift with less input. Congrats on the Touring, that's what I put a deposit on too.

    Wow! Thanks for the very articulate driving comparo between the two. I just came back from test driving the '23 Pilot and design-wise, I prefer the new Pilot. Even though the Telluride has the refreshed interior screens, the actual exterior design of the Telluride still shows its age vs the new design of the Pilot-- sharper headlights/tailights for the Pilot which I like. One interesting feature the Pilot has is that flexible middle row, which can be used as a 3-across bench or 2 captain’s chairs.
    That’s really important for a family SUV when you are carrying a lot of people and their baggage. If you only have captain’s chairs and are forced to put down the 3rd row to carry stuff, then you’re limited to only 4 people in the car, which sucks. With the new Pilot, you can easily carry 5 people and a ton of stuff, or 8 people and a decent amount of stuff.
    I wish all 3 row SUVs had that feature.
    Kia actually has something like that on some trims of the Carnival minivan. I don’t think upper trims of the Telluride have that.
    My biggest question with the Telluride is long term reliability. If you’re going to get a $50,000 vehicle, you either lease it or make sure it’s ultra reliable so you can amortize that price over many years of driving.
    I would tend to trust a 200,000 mile Honda. Not sure about a 200,000 mile Kia. Nothing against Hyundai/Kia, I’ve owned a Hyundai that was very cleverly built and did well by me, but not quite the quality of Hondas and Toyotas I’ve owned.

    • @drewjohnson321
      @drewjohnson321  ปีที่แล้ว

      That three seat middle row is a really cool feature. Didn't have time to get into as much interior items as I wanted in the video. The flexible middle row in the Pilot was another nail in the coffin to me for the Telluride. We originally wanted a higher trim level Telluride, but were going to have to sacrifice getting a high trim level to get a bench seat. Was glad to see that the upper trim Pilots had the flexible three seat middle. Reliability is also a huge consideration too. I hope the new Pilot lives up to Honda's reputation. But I agree - can't see a 200,000 Hyundai/Kia holding up as well or retaining near as much value in 10-15 years.

    • @almassengale
      @almassengale ปีที่แล้ว

      That is a giant feature for families. That and the bigger cargo capacity is much more important to me than things like a slightly larger touchscreen.

    • @adamesd3699
      @adamesd3699 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@almassengale Exactly. Plus, if you keep that middle seat in place, not only do you get 3-across seating in the middle row, you also get an extra large storage area under the cargo floor (where the middle seat would be stored if you want captain’s chairs). Win win win.
      I haven’t driven it yet, but I am seriously considering this new 2023 Pilot. Honda really answered a lot of my “asks” with it.
      -Keep the V6 and don’t do a turbo 4 like the Highlander? Check!
      -Ventilated front seats option? Check!
      -360 degree camera for the big SUV? Check!
      -Tighter turning radius for tight parking situations? Check!
      Now if only they could have done something about the fuel economy. Oh well, maybe next generation.

    How does headroom and legroom compare to the Telluride? I'm 6'3" with broad shoulders and am waiting for something that has as much head/shoulder/leg room as my current 2011 Ford Flex. If I get a Pilot, I'm probably stuck with the EX-L or Sport as I usually can't do moonroofs, as they rob too much headroom for me, and I doubt I can order a Touring and delete the moonroof.

    • @drewjohnson321
      @drewjohnson321  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I didn't pay close attention to the leg room since both vehicles had more than enough for me at 5' 11". I did notice that the Pilot seats held me pretty well, so that may be a little tighter for someone with broader shoulders. The headroom in the Pilot was great. When my 5'10" wife was driving, I saw there was about 7" of head room above her. But that was on the EX-L with no sunroof. But even if the sunroof adds 3" (which is probably more than it really does), I think there will still be a ton of headroom.

    • @plmn93
      @plmn93 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm 6'3" as well and the Pilot legroom was terrible from anywhere but the driver's seat. The seats are low to the floor and don't have a lot of travel, so my knees were in the air and my thighs didn't touch the seats. Driver's power seat is height adjustable which helps but you need to go all the way up to the Elite to get a height adjustable passenger seat. That was a dealbreaker for us. It really shocked me because Honda likes to tout class leading volume numbers but those claims don't align with reality...for both passenger and cargo space.

    Agree on most points, Drew. I do feel the Telluride's front seats are more comfortable overall and are a little deeper (I'm 6'4"). What has convinced me to go with the Pilot is dealership experiences. The Kia sales people have been poor to actually ignorant, even before getting to the market adjustment conversation. I've been in 7 Kia dealerships, all with bad, bad attitudes. To be fair, Honda is not what it once was, in this respect. But overall, I felt liked I'd been slimed when I left the Kia dealers and I don't want to wonder what my service experience will be like at Kia. Most of the Honda sales people I experienced were average to excellent. Good luck with your new Pilot!

    • @SabeySu182
      @SabeySu182 ปีที่แล้ว

      Out of curiosity, did you take any steps regarding the depth of the front Pilot seats? I'm the same height, and the best I can do is tilting the rear back a bunch to give my butt an extra inch or two to push back.
      The driver seat is OK with the front height tilt adjustment, but that passenger seat can get pretty rough. Maybe some kind of thigh support/extender cushion? I just can't think of anything that wouldn't block the seat heating/ventilation function in the process, which would be a huge bummer...

    Thanks for an objective review. Both have strong points and some weak points, and they are closely matched in feature sets. The AndroidAuto/Apple Carplay issue is REALLY a miss on the Telluride BUT the Honda has the smaller and strangely placed info center screen. The Telluride does come with some features that have to be optioned on the Pilot, but the Pilot comes with proven Honda engineering and reliability. Both however, are fine SUVs for this segment. What I do find amusing is in some comments you'll get "Kia all the way!!" or "Honda is SOOO much better" when in reality they are very closely matched in engineering aspects, refinement, and comfort. It all comes down to personal preference. That said, within the next few months I intend to buy....... one or the other. LOL! Gotcha!!! Still doing my research.

    The 2023 Pilot uses a new version of the 3.5L V6 - it has DOHC vs SOHC; there's no VTEC anymore (but it has DOHC so apparently doesn't need it); and I forget the rest of the differences. Honda says it's "all new" but others I've conversed with doubt that it's truly all new. Let me know what else you find out if you dig into this new for 2023 Pilot V6. Thanks for this comparison - the Pilot is looking really good in my mind too. Pilot has strut front suspension while MDX has double wishbone (not that you talked much about that if at all.) Oh, also, the Telluride uses an Atkinson Cycle engine, which generates more heat. I prefer the Pilot design.

    • @drewjohnson321
      @drewjohnson321  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I will let you know if I find out any more info on their new 3.5. I do agree, seems unlikely that it would be all new given the fact that they've been producing highly-rated 3.5 V6s for decades. Yes - I think savagegeese brought up the issue with Hyundai/Kia 3.8 V6 using Atkinson Cycle and producing a lot of heat that may reduce the overall lifespan. Not as big of a deal for original owners with the factory warranty, but may play significant factor in resale values if the engine doesn't prove to be as reliable as the competition.

    The small screen is obviously a supply chain issue. I can clearly tell the dash was designed for a larger sized display and they just stuck the small screen in as a stop gap rather than delaying the release of the vehicle to wait for screens. There is massive empty space around where it mounts in the dash.
    2024 models may have the larger screens. If not by next year, definitely the mid model update in a few years will feature much bigger screens.

    • @ProffesorBlue
      @ProffesorBlue ปีที่แล้ว

      12.3" size on the new Accords, you are right, some have commented it's an obvious upgrade for the 2024 model year, they literally have filler materials in that space, the dash is ready for that bigger size when you really look at it.

    Drew thank you so much for doing this. I have owned 4 Hondas(civic, ody, and 2 accords currently drive 2019 touring with 2.0 which I must say makes it quite fast.My niece just bought 22 Telluride and really loves it so I was uncertain of new Pilot or considering Kia. But I really feel that it could have been me doing this video as you mentioned all the things I consider with a new car. I do know that the KIa has a much better long term warranty. Can I ask you about back seat room did it feel spacious? Also on a more minor note how was the sound system? Thanks

    • @drewjohnson321
      @drewjohnson321  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Glad this was helpful! Middle seat in Pilot (and Telluride) felt spacious - tons of leg room for me at 5'11". Even the third row outside seats were comfortable for me in both SUVs. Regarding stereo - yes I tried the system in the EX-L which is their mid-level stereo for the Pilot (Honda calls it the "225-Watt Audio System with 9 Speakers, including Subwoofer"). I tried it with youtube music connected through the wireless carplay and it was pretty bad actually. Slightly worse than the Telluride's premium HK stereo, which doesn't sound great either. Might be better with a wired connection and streamed through Amazon's lossless service. I'm hoping that the 12 speaker Bose system in the Touring and Elite is substantially better... we'll see.

      We just bought the 2023 Pilot EX L and have put 600 miles on it and love it so far. We had our 3 kids sit in a Telluride and then they got into the Pilot. I feel and the kids agreed that the Pilot has more room.

  • @hematose
    @hematose ปีที่แล้ว

    Did you cross shop the Atlas? I'm stuck between the top trim levels of that and the Pilot. Atlas is several k cheaper, standard tow hitch and not the first model year. Less seats, but the middle back seat of the new Pilot seems like a joke and just makes the rear less comfortable 99% of the time. I like Honda for reliability, but it seems like warped rotors are inevitable and the first model year might have issues.

    • @drewjohnson321
      @drewjohnson321  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I drove an Atlas SE with tech package and V6. I felt like the transmission hunted and wasn't calibrated nearly as well or as seamless as the Telluride or Pilot. The engine didn't feel as refined either at idle or driving around. It was quieter than the Telluride on the highway though. Interior of Atlas shows its age compared to the Telluride and Pilot and also has a surprising amount of hard plastic in high touch and very visible locations... doesn't seem as nice as its competition. About the third row middle seat on the Pilot - I agree. Not a practical seat for a road trip or sitting in for any length of time, but for my needs, it can make the difference between taking two cars vs just one when family is visiting or when we have three other couples we want to go out with. Nice to have the option to cram in there and still be legal and have a seat belt for everyone.

    • @hematose
      @hematose ปีที่แล้ว

      @drewjohnson321  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@hematose I think it's at least as quiet - probably just slightly quieter actually - than the EX-L Pilot that I drove. The EX-L only has an acoustic glass windshield but not in the front door windows. So it's possible a Pilot Touring or Elite with the AG front door windows might be quieter than the Atlas, but I'm not sure.

    Great comparison, Drew. It is so difficult to draw conclusions with modern suvs.
    A simple design fault which this Honda tech has pointed out is the poorly positioned gear selector which is right next to the cup holders. If you do drink coffee, it will spill onto your gears and cause a short at one point or another. More design issues here:

    • @drewjohnson321
      @drewjohnson321  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! I saw that video too - I would prefer it not have the buttons next to the cup holders. Glad there are some other options in the doors for cups and storage though. One thing I wonder about in that design issues video is the premise that the rotors are going to be prone to warping quickly. This was an issue on the previous gen and other Hondas but the '23 Pilot got bigger rotors. I wonder if that tech knows that and/or if it will make a difference in longevity.
