When comparing top trim levels, the GH seems to be the choice to go with but for lower trims, the Pilot offers much more in terms of engine and driving experience for the same money.
Naturally aspirated V6 engines tend to have a smoother power delivery and can provide good performance across a wide range of RPMs. They often offer a balance between power and fuel efficiency. turbocharged 4-cylinder engines can provide more power for their size due to forced induction. However, the additional complexity of turbocharging can introduce potential reliability concerns, such as the turbocharger itself and associated components like intercoolers and boost pressure control systems.
the NA v6 suck at lower rpm uses, no power and torque as turbo engines are better for daily driving with full torque available down low. Plus with hybrid there's the electric motor as well, further improving this. Also, the Toyota has dual injection compared to pilot direct injection only. So your statement needs to be updated lmao
@@MikeyG003 After having driven both the GH I-4T and Pilot Elite, the GH was a solid head above in both torque and NVH. I liked the notion of the V-6, but it's transverse orientation and location in front of the front wheels made for significant NVH and felt under powered compared to the GH I-4T.
The electric motors juice the GH at the take off just like any EV. There’s also the MPG. I’m guessing the Pilot gets 23-24mpg. The GH they drove is 27. Other manufacturers seem to have problems getting any effciency bump out of hybrid technology. The Mazda Cx-90 PHEV only gets 1mpg better than the inline 6. I’m not sure why you would pay more for the hybrid just for around town electric only.
Go get turbo inline from Toyota built in the US its rated to last 150k... Go enjoy paying 15-20K over msrp in interest rates, dealer markups and taxes from Toyota...
I think one thing to always point out is the under storage for each. Show under storage cubic ft comparison and under storage plus cargo cubic ft. Because the Honda has a whole lot more, and that would bring it to around 21 i think where as the highlander has less… I think those would be great specs to have added to comparisons. Great job as always.
Toyota Highlander requires a subscription for remote start???? We were literally looking to switch to the Highlander - so glad you noted that little detail - really appreciate it.
You only need to pay for the mobile app to remote start. It's still available with the key. You just hit the lock button three times and hold it in the third.
So like pay $2.95 one time for a Toyota app? Or sign up for another wealth and soul sucking perpetual negative cash flow “subscription” to access a basic feature? We talking HBO plus here just to get the remote start to work? If so, I will be looking for something other than a Toyota after 30 years and 6Toyota vehicles.
Now i see why toyota didn’t majorly refresh the standard highlander. This GH is a much better improvement over the current highlander and definitely a much better option compared to the competition. The fact that this almost has full size suv space definitely puts a lot of respect to this suvs name.
The GH is 2” longer than the 2023 Honda Pilot and 2” shorter in height I don’t see how that makes closer to a full size SUV! People will choose based upon brand loyalty.
@@bnz300Full size SUV's aren't determined by length and height of a vehicle. It's based upon passenger space and cargo space, which the GH has much more than your quoted "2 inches."
@@stephenobrien2408- get out your tape measure and compare PRACTICAL measurements like headroom, shoulder and hip room along with seating COMFORT. DON’T become fixated on floorspace unless you plan on lying on the floor …
GH has a 4 cylinder engine with a turbo and a a hybrid system connected to a 6 speed transmission. Imagine the stress put on the powertrain hauling 8 people at freeway speeds. GH is an expensive repair ticking time bomb
It's also a Toyota, so you know they have over-engineered it for longevity and low stress. It's still disappointing it only has 6 gears in the hybrid-max (the other trims have 8 gears) but I doubt the engine or transmission are going to have any issues. The battery is a legitimate point, however.
Thats true but low IQ people don't realize that. GH has 2.4L as i remember 2.4L have oil consumption 10 years ago now they use same size engine + turbo 😂😂😂 is a real ticking bomb
I think you missed a major component in the rear of the Pilot. The under storage trunk is large enough to stow the middle second row seat. Thus if using the seat for cup holders you have a ton of hidden storage the highlander does not.
Such a great video comparing detailed specs of the two! I wasn't a fan of the Pilot, but the Elite drives the best out of the trims. Looking forward to seeing the Grand Highlander in person and being able to drive it soon!
Probably the traditional engine on Pilot is more reliable. Saving money on the gas usually goes to the replacing battery down the road and initial price
I personally like the traditional 6 cylinder engines in the Pilot or something like the CX-90, but there is not denying the added space and value/packaging of the new Grand Highlander. The hybrid Max also gets it by a lot of HP, which matters when you have a loaded vehicle with kids and luggage etc.
MPG is no longer a plausible method of measuring for vehicle expense, when comparing nat. aspirated, turbo, hybrid power trains. Vehicles use different fuel grades and costlier standard equipment and list prices, cost markups etc. Another way to figure expenses is CPMD, cost per mile driven.
@@user-tb7rn1il3q probably not in the first year, next year it will definitely be at MSRP or lower. The Pilot engine alone makes it #1. People talk about the 9” screen in the Pilot, but it’s actually really good. The Pilot just floats like a soft cloud.
I will STILL talk about that small infotainment screen because it's unacceptable when other competitors are going bigger, including this Grand Highlander!
its likely that they are saving the bigger 12.3 inch screen from the accord for the next refresh, and also to work out any bugs from the first year of production
Do you have a pilot 2023 I just got mine and I feel like it drives and shifts a lot and the driving is awkward I’m not sure if it’s an actual thing to take to the dealership about or if they all drive like that. It already has 1600 miles which is over the break in period
@@Jm-fq1xd - Yes, I have one and it’s been phenomenal. Smooth ride with superb handling. Gas mileage is decent. Other than that I haven’t had any issues. You can call your salesman and inquire just to be on the safe side.
Pilot grill/front end is more attractive. As is the Pilot taillight design. And I'm one of those who prefers amber turn signals in the rear. Not a fan of an all red setup (except for the reverse lights).
I think overall, the Pilot is a better value , especially if you plan to buy and keep it for 10 plus yrs. The hybrids will need a new battery after 10 yrs or so and the Pilot's V6 is superior to the GH's 4 cyclinder gasline engine. Also I like the option of having the center seat in the second row and it has more storage space under the cargo area.
The Grand Highlander can be equipped with either captain chairs or a three seat bench. Also the statement where people say the battery needs replacement every 10 years is not true. Yes, 10 years is recromened and stated in the Toyota handbook but i have many friends and family who have toyota hybrids that have batteries that are still going strong after 20 years.
@@Al13n1nV8D3R you are correct, but only the lowest trim offers it. You would have to get the XLE to get 3 seats in the second row, if you opt for the Limited or Platium you only get 2. I have heard the same thing from other Toyota owners about the battery lasting more than 10yrs. I am seriously considering get one in the next yr or two.
I like the look of both, but this trend of making buyers pay extra for a subscription is absurd and needs to go away, if I’m paying over $50k for a car I shouldn’t be forced to pay a monthly subscription for a feature that’s already on the car…build it into the price of the car ffs!
Initially I didn't even want to consider the GH, but wife asked me to test drive just to be sure. It is certainly a great vehicle, but still went with the Pilot for the V6 and, at least in terms of the feeling, a more open and spacious front seating area and out-the-window openness. And it may not be the issue that it used to be, but in the past they used to say avoid first year first generation vehicles, bound to be bugs that need to be worked out, even for a company like Toyota... Nice comparison guys!
I love Toyota hybrid powertrain so if I would ever be buying one of these massive car, my pick will be the Toyota. But I like the Honda Pilot styling a lot though !!!
How's the handling? Toyota is usually floaty-boaty while Honda is sharp. Also, I'm leaning towards just the non-turbo hybrid GH but not sure about its driving dynamics which I usually feel Toyota is lacking. Thank you!
the pilot's third-row headroom is 39.3 inches, which is actually more than the previous generation and would score half a point to the grand Highlander's 37.2. having said that the grand highlander offers major improvements over the regular highlander to go after the competition even though the regular highlander sells the most in the segment already
The one thing that really bothers me about the new Grand Highlander has nothing to do with its great amenities and improvements in power and size. It’s when a test driver who has years of experience driving hundreds of different vehicles, describes the “ body roll” or FLOATY” feeling when changing lanes or on a curvy road. If you have driven over hundreds of thousands of miles like I have, with about a 40 different vehicles, that feeling is disconcerting to say the least. It’s a feeling of loss of control, like when you need to pass another vehicle and need to get back into the right lane on a busy highway or freeway. When I’m transporting my family, this body float feeling is very, very worrisome. Imagine you need to make a sudden lane change with any SUV (because of their high center of gravity) a roll over is a possibility. The Honda Pilot does NOT exhibit this problem like the Grand Highlander. Just sayin.
Thanks for this comparison. Both seem like good options but I like the extra space and fuel economy in the GH. Maybe Honda can make a Grand Pilot that is around 203" long.
See above, the 2023 Honda Pilot is 199”+ in length and 77” wide in the cabin. The engineering of a longer vehicle, especially wheel base and turning radius would be easy to design but would be a nightmare to manufacture!
Great comparison. You do leave out an important part, and that is the grand Highlander is built on a stretched minivan architecture whereas the Pilot is a completely new and for the first time, built to be a capable off-road suv.
Grand highlander all the way!! it looks better and drives better in my opinion. And everything is LED, which is important to me, including the reverse lights unlike the pilot.
Also, why would reverse lights in LED be important to you. You never even see them! What normal unpaid person would write "everything is LED which is important to me including reverse lights unlike pilot?? Also " it drives better in my opinion"...wtf it's not even at dealership lots yet! This has paid shill written all over it. Ive been watching a lot of these GH reviews and the comments section are just full of these BS comments.
Does the GH have a walk away feature for the tailgate? Didn’t see it mention since I know the Pilot does. Also, would love to see the AWD comparison as the regular Highlander struggled with wheel slippage compared to Honda’s IVTM system.
The Toyota sticks with the “ Toy” engine.. 265 hp with the Turbo. Turbos are famous for going out and if you’re towing something you will be at a standstill.. The PILOT has a number of settings for travel in AWD.. Also the PILOT has 285hp. I went with the PILOT, No big markups!
It was a tough choice for me between a Pilot and a Highlander. But after watching how poorly a Highlander fared in a AWD test video from The Fast Lane ("The Winner Is Obvious: 2023 Toyota Highlander vs 2023 Honda Pilot | AWD Torture Test & Off-Road") I ordered a Pilot. I live in a snowy rural area and need a family hauler with a dependable AWD.
Video briefly mentions a subscription fee for the GH. How much are these fees and does the Pilot also have ongoing subscription fees? This could greatly affect the overall cost of ownership.
Our dealers here are taking reservations now. They wouldn’t tell me if there is any markup yet. It depends on how many allocations and how much demand before it hits the lot.
You guys are awesome and you make your previews simple and to the point ,I love the side by side way you do your reviews and the noise meter is definitely a most. Thanks for your time and knowledge. ❤

I stopped worrying about Toyota Hybrids 15 years ago. Gregory took the words right out of my mouth, Toyota Hybrids are so robust that NYC has them running around as taxis. There is no greater crucible than that. Also, the Grand Highlander uses the older Nickel batteries which are far more robust than Lithium batteries. It is a win win. Toyota has never gotten the credit they deserve when it comes to Hybrids, but now the world is forced to notice. The Grand Highlander and Prius are foreshadowing what will be the next Camry. Just as this Pilot stands no chance, the Accord will also stand no chance.
If you are to worry about batteries, first look at the brand of the manufacturer, Toyota has been working with batteries for so long, there is no need to worry.
The lease price for these standard vehicles are more than the Germans Suv my Uncle Audi Q7 was $479 a month only $2,000 down while Toyota wants $600 for a highlander doesn’t make sense but my uncle said the upper class have perks compare to the lower class. He said most people who are leasing a standard vehicle is not going to cross shop with Land Rover, Audi, BMW or Porsche
Because Toyota insists I have captains chairs in the 2nd row, I have to choose the Pilot (a dictate from on high :-)). I'd really rather get the Platinum Hybrid Max but until Toyota bucks the trend of high trims must have captains chairs, I'm stuck with the lower performing Pilot. Or the Explorer or Pathfinder, neither of which are very desirable in my mind. Though the Pilot and Pathfinder both have much simpler drivetrains vs. Grand Highlander Hybrid Max. Life is full of tradeoffs.
@@fastandfuriousman Thanks for that. I was able to configure the Limited in regular hybrid with a bench, but not the Hybrid Max (which is, of course, the one I want.)
I don't know but, it seems the Pilot handle road noise more than GH. If you focus and listen you will notice GH has noticeable noise compared to the Pilot.
Great comparison!! Although I feel the comparison between Pilot Elite and GH Turbo Platinum would have been a little fairer. Both being the top gas trims and almost equally priced!
I wish you measured and compared the width/height/depth dimensions with 2nd and 3rd row seats down. It looks to me like Honda has more width space due to Highlander's bulky sidearm cup-holder protrusions.
They’re both great mid size SUV’s Top of the list I like the Toyotas room. And the power of the suv. But I choose the Honda pilot 2023 My family of 4 needed a 2nd car. We couldn’t fit inside my 2013 Jetta anymore since my 4 and 2 year old.. aren’t getting any smaller 😂 I’m happy with the room with the middle console. And especially the all naturally aspirated v6 engine. No half batteries, half engines, and turbos. In the random dusty winds in Las Vegas nevada. especially. Plus if something goes wrong with it in 10 years. It’s just an engine, I don’t gotta mess with a battery. But just my opinion 😅 I’m happy with my 2023 pilot And my wife and kids are too. Especially with our random trips to Disneyland from Vegas.
I'd give a half point for the Pilot's walk away option for the tailgate. I can't think of how many times I have my hands full and awkwardly try and hit the button for the tail gate. It sucks that both of these have ballooned over $50k though. The Pilot is probably 2nd overall in the SUV world now right behind this new Grand Highlander. I'm interested in how the new turbo-4 actually drives. That'll make or break this one as everything else, aside from cargo, is pretty even.
Watch other car reviews where they talk about the poor cornering and excessive body roll of the GH where it actually makes one reviewer car sick. The Pilot is the better handling/driving suv.

This is supposed to be a large family hauler, but it's only a heavy bloated max 6-7 seater with only 4 cylinder powertrains. Fail.
@J Raheem Jefcoat I agree the infotainment is subpar. The pilot also does need hybrid options for those who care, but I'd personally have a smooth reliable v6 with a 10 speed. You can keep the puny 4 cylinder stuff.
Thanks guys-long term reliability i would choose the Honda just because of the naturally aspirated V6 engine over the 4 cylinder turbo battery Toyota-the more tech the more long term problems let alone in 12 years or so you will need to replace that expensive battery in the Toyota
@@danielrodriguez2343 wrong. That's your opinion but facts state otherwise, look up reliability ratings over the last several years. Honda used to be reliable, that's sadly no longer the case.
I would love to know how these 2 SUV feel when it comes to head swaying and bobbing when turning left and right. I have a Lexus RX350 and the head sway is a lot causing lots of "motion sickness" feel for the passenger.
A 4 cyl engine will wear out faster with a turbo. It's simply wasn't meant for that kind of work. Especially with a vehicle that size. Also, the strain when its fully loaded with people and their gear is too much. Don't even think about towing with a 4cyl. But im glad they made the distinction between the two engines. If you're going to trade it in after 60,000 miles, it won't really matter. But if you're keeping it for more than that, I'd go with the Pilot.
Good try by Toyota. It looks like they’ve been listening to all the complaints we had for the Toyota Highlander. Unfortunately, they’ve stuck with their move away from V6. I get it for Sedans like the Camry but for a family SUV? Nevertheless, I’m impressed with the power output from their V4’s. My mind tells me there’s a catch to it. In the end, I’ll pick the Pilot.
Oouu I really love the upgrade on the new Gr Highlander, although the Pilot still compares strongly, I do think that it’s best to acquire the Gr High currently. Pretty sure Honda will upgrade squarely next . Your review is so direct and highly commendable
Another question for Car Confections: what weighting do you use when making your measurements? A, B (older meters), C, or Z? I'm asking because you guys consistently get numbers that are easily 10 dB quieter than another channel (AoA) that takes these measurements. Maybe the roads he tests on in CA are just rougher than your standard test road in TN. An average number for him is around 68-70 dB SPL.
Dear vatsal patel. Toyota is the king of hybrids and turbo i4 engines so this will be extremely reliable . Rest your comment is outdated
the NA v6 suck at lower rpm uses, no power and torque as turbo engines are better for daily driving with full torque available down low.
Finally, the Pilot actually looks good on the outside. Only took them 3 generations to get here…
Go get turbo inline from Toyota built in the US its rated to last 150k...
I was wondering about that ... very important to me. Thank you!
Toyota Highlander requires a subscription for remote start???? We were literally looking to switch to the Highlander - so glad you noted that little detail - really appreciate it.
You only need to pay for the mobile app to remote start. It's still available with the key. You just hit the lock button three times and hold it in the third.
That makes more sense as it would require a phone subscription
So like pay $2.95 one time for a Toyota app? Or sign up for another wealth and soul sucking perpetual negative cash flow “subscription” to access a basic feature? We talking HBO plus here just to get the remote start to work? If so, I will be looking for something other than a Toyota after 30 years and 6Toyota vehicles.
Great comparison video. I like some other’s that have similarly commented prefer a traditional 6 cylinder engine to a 4 cylinder Turbo.
Thank you!
Now i see why toyota didn’t majorly refresh the standard highlander. This GH is a much better improvement over the current highlander and definitely a much better option compared to the competition. The fact that this almost has full size suv space definitely puts a lot of respect to this suvs name.
Yup but it actually shows how well Pilot manages the competition especially with a lot more to offer at less starting price with Reliability

GH has a 4 cylinder engine with a turbo and a a hybrid system connected to a 6 speed transmission. Imagine the stress put on the powertrain hauling 8 people at freeway speeds. GH is an expensive repair ticking time bomb
So true. Agree 100%.
It's also a Toyota, so you know they have over-engineered it for longevity and low stress. It's still disappointing it only has 6 gears in the hybrid-max (the other trims have 8 gears) but I doubt the engine or transmission are going to have any issues. The battery is a legitimate point, however.
Time will tell, but don’t get confused with American made SUVs.
Thats true but low IQ people don't realize that. GH has 2.4L as i remember 2.4L have oil consumption 10 years ago now they use same size engine + turbo 😂😂😂 is a real ticking bomb
How often are you hauling 8 adults? If that's your concern get a suburban.

Yes agreed but the production of hybrid is VERY VERY VERY slow. Good luck getting one of those in the configuration you want
Cx90 isn’t a traditional 6
@@brohammer I know, it’s an in-line with a turbo, but i’m referring to the partial hybrid setup.

You’re kidding right? The engine in the pilot is an inefficient turd
Do you have a pilot 2023 I just got mine and I feel like it drives and shifts a lot and the driving is awkward I’m not sure if it’s an actual thing to take to the dealership about or if they all drive like that. It already has 1600 miles which is over the break in period

CX90 if you seldom use the 3rd row, GH Hybrid limited if fuel efficiency is the goal. Or GH Hybrid max for more power delivery comparable to the CX90.
The CX90 is slick but the interior is like a mid size sedan with just two cup holders and a very small glove box.
Pilot grill/front end is more attractive. As is the Pilot taillight design. And I'm one of those who prefers amber turn signals in the rear. Not a fan of an all red setup (except for the reverse lights).
Please do comparison among grand highlander, palisade and telluride together.
Love the exterior of Honda Pilot more.
Toyota is ridiculous for not offering 3 seats in the second row.
That removable middle seat is a fantastic idea. #fulldadmode
Nice comparison guys!

i wish pilot has center console like that of GH, sliding..... i love it...
I love the comparison videos
the pilot's third-row headroom is 39.3 inches, which is actually more than the previous generation and would score half a point to the grand Highlander's 37.2. having said that the grand highlander offers major improvements over the regular highlander to go after the competition even though the regular highlander sells the most in the segment already
Just sayin.
You're right, grand highlander feels very floaty boaty. Pilot is much more grounded.
That will be the new Odyssey, lol
Now this is the match-up of the century.
GH has the shape of the outgoing model Pilot
Grand Highlander looks seriously plain and boring. Pilot look much better in my opinion.
Also, why would reverse lights in LED be important to you. You never even see them! What normal unpaid person would write "everything is LED which is important to me including reverse lights unlike pilot?? Does the GH have a walk away feature for the tailgate? Didn’t see it mention since I know the Pilot does. Also, would love to see the AWD comparison as the regular Highlander struggled with wheel slippage compared to Honda’s IVTM system.
I have to go for the new grand highlander cuz the styling is nice as well as the interior. Keep up the good work…

I live in a snowy rural area and need a family hauler with a dependable AWD.
Did you get the trailsport pilot ?
I love hondas interior feel than the GH plus it comes with remote start which very useful in cold and hot weather here in Vegas
Video briefly mentions a subscription fee for the GH. How much are these fees and does the Pilot also have ongoing subscription fees? This could greatly affect the overall cost of ownership.

It's made by Toyota.. For reference, check out the Prius and how well it has done.
