Sailing Safar Ep 12 - DOWNWIND adventures (Sailing to Gibraltar)

  • The adventures continue onboard Safar, with my eldest brother Liam joining me for the 290nm passage from Alicante to Gibraltar, variable conditions were experienced along the route, from lulls of no wind to strong gusts and lightning strikes. When the breeze picked up, Safar made great progress and used every ounce of canvas to propel her to Gibraltar.

    Just a quick message to acknowledge a really great Chanel. Brilliant sailing content and really informative ‘this is how I do it’ descriptions as well as really lovely video / editing work. Safar is also very easy on the eye so I look forward to viewing of all of your adventures … thank you for all the work.

      Hi Pete
      Really appreciate the message and glad you’re enjoying the videos so far! Apologies I don’t make them too frequently (Work has a nasty habit of getting in the way) but I’m back onboard Safar in the next couple of weeks and the adventures will continue, hopefully Gibraltar to the Canneries will be next up!

    I will be following your stories as i plan to buy a yacht in Croatia in October and sail around the Mediterranean, then back to UK.
    Binge watching all of your videos and learning as much as possible. Please dont get an annoying girlfriend as most solo sailors eventually do....thx again

    Bad weather and lightning is a great opportunity to capture some exciting and interesting footage. It would be a good idea to make the time and pull the camera and shoot. Good video. Thanks

    Great footage - for her age Safar is fast, like all Saltram Saga 's.

    Hi Morgan... Nice episode !! (and improving day by day)
    For a solo sailor... what is (under your opinion) the best LOA for a boat ,.... 30-33-35-37-43 .... ???

    • @sailingsafar
      @sailingsafar  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Jorge! Trying hard to get the channel to grow, but it’s become a slow burner.
      Great question, so from owning Safar, I have often thought about what I would want next, I’d quite happily have a bigger boat, ideally with another cabin so it’s easier for people to join me, but I wouldn’t go above 12m as that seems to be when marinas ramp up their prices (I pay the same now for a berth as a 12m boat)
      For a larger boat though, I’d prefer a fin keel, for the manoeuvrability, it’s tough going into med moorings and slips with safar solo as she refuses to go backwards in any direction, and going in forwards means running up to the bow to see distances and grab lines, which is a pain. Backing a fin keel in means you can do everything from the helm which is far less stressful
      What’s your thoughts?

    Hi Morgan, i am enjoying your videos, would love to see more of them published. I like the solo sailing aspect of your you tube material.
    Was good to see your brother join you. Liam has a good sense of humar.
    Awesome drone footage!!!
    Keep it up!!!
    Cheers.

      Thanks Corné, Really appreciate the comment and feedback. I'm desperate to get back sailing with Safar, and have some big adventures planned, starting with a trip down to the Canary Islands, but I'm required to return to work for 8 weeks first, so the next couple of episodes will likely be revolving around rigging and a boat tour, but please do stay tuned as the solo sailing adventures are certainly coming soon. All the best, Morgan

      I could certainly spend hours myself reviewing the footage, having the drone really gives a great perspective of the boat I wouldn’t normally get to see.

    Hi Morgan, great to catch up with this one. The filmmaking is really coming on, I am jealous, also the drone footage is beautiful. Are you going to cross this winter?? All the best

    • @sailingsafar
      @sailingsafar  ปีที่แล้ว

      I certainly feel like I'm getting the hang of the editing, I just don't get to do it enough to really master it, but I've got some big plans for next year as you've guessed and I'm excited for that adventure and putting the episodes together. Safar is in Gib for the moment while I'm away with work in (Caribbean) I was recently promoted so had to extend my work away longer than planned. But the extra money is helping with some exciting new boat parts! I make it back to Safar in 2 weeks time and I'll push on to the canaries (Planning on crossing mid January following another work rotation) hopefully some new videos for the October and November though. How's Mandala? Did you manage to get much time onboard this summer? Norway was the plan right?

    • @Wauquiez48PS
      @Wauquiez48PS ปีที่แล้ว

      Congrats on the promotion Morgan. Yes the extra coin will always find a home on the boat! My vids have non of the finesse or class of your proper jobs! I put them up as holiday snaps - a mix of photos and very brief footage stuck together with a knife and fork . This year was brill we managed to start in Germany and go up the east coast of Sweden to Aland islands of Finland and back down around to Copenhagen. It was a great trip and Norway waits for next year- like you I need to top up the coffers 🤣 All the best - will watch with interest

    I believe that Safar has a good pedigree, as I think that Saltrams 36 have been used in the Golden Globe Race before (correct me if I'm wrong) so she should be able to give larger boats a run for their money. I am guessing that she handles high wind conditions well, if I am right.

    • @sailingsafar
      @sailingsafar  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks Chris! Safar has certainly proven herself as a great sea boat, and has raced across the Atlantic a few times back in the 80's and 90's! Pat Lawless entered his Saltram in the GGR was was very successful until his wind vane sadly became damaged.

      I knew I had heard the Saltram name during the GGR, so it was Pat then, yes I watched him pull into Cape Town from 3rd place I believe, also follow his brother who has a Rival 41, but has not made a video for a while.

      @sailingsafar  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Hugh! I think I’ll have a couple more videos before I head back to work, they’ll most likely be more boat maintenance specific though.so we’ll see how that goes down.
      Glad to hear you’re getting some time in July to sail north! How far are you hoping to get?
