  • In this episode, I rejoin Safar after a 2 month hiatus while I have been at work in the South Pacific. During this time, Safar has also undergone some work to her hull to ensure she's slippy and ready for the fourth coming season.
    I'm a little rusty, both with my sailing and with my filming, but my skills sharpen throughout the episode and together me and Safar press East into the Med.

    Fully understand the need to go and make some money, but, please keep making the videos. I watch scores of different sailing channels, but, yours seems far and away the most relatable. I had hoped to make a very similar trip to yours in my own boat this year, but I continue to have concerns about the Orca whale situation, as I think do many others. You seemed to have been ok, in that regard. Good luck in the new job and keep the videos coming, even though they may be less often.

      @sailingsafar  ปีที่แล้ว

      Really appreciate this Chris thank you! I’m hoping to keep some videos coming when I return to work, so I’m doing plenty of sailing and filming now, but obviously I don’t want to water the content down, so I’ll only put a video together if I think people might find it interesting or helpful 😅
      The orca situation was/ is a concern and I was certainly worried about it, I made the mistake of joining the FB groups with all the damage reports and then had visions of what I’d do if I got attacked, but ultimately 100s of boats seemed to be sailing the coast and very very few get attacked, so I think you’d have to be fairly unlucky, that being said I went well Offshore to avoid everything and everyone during my trip down the Portuguese coast. Good luck with your trip though! Keep me posted of where you end up!

    Another great video !
    How much difference did the staysail make to the roll sailing ‘wing on wing’ ? I have just bought an old Westerly Sealord with a staysail on a removable inner forestay. Anything to help / slow the roll would be worth giving it a go I guess..

    • @sailingsafar
      @sailingsafar  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Always liked the Sealords, look forward to seeing some pictures of yours when you get sailing!
      To be honest, I’m sure the staysail must help to a degree, but the heavy roll when wing on wing was still a problem 😅 my search for a perfect downwind set up continues!

    Another great episode and good to see you back and sailing Safar again. Quite envious of your sailing conditions... we are having a shocker of a summer for sailing with frequent rain and strong ex-cyclone winds in Auckland, NZ so enjoyed being reminded of these more favourable conditions.

      Sorry to hear about your sailing season, the weather was also a little hit and miss while I was in French Polynesia. Hopefully you’ll manage to get some quality time on the water before the season ends.
      I’ve been very fortunate with sailing in Europe so far with the conditions being quite mild. My latest passage (Next weeks episode) had almost perfect weather, the footage of Safar sailing under full sail was a joy to film!

      I think you’re right Richard, This one is a bit on the small side and not quite what I had envisioned when I had It made, but it seems excellent when I’m in a blow and working to windward. I do have a older larger yankee and a Genoa, I’ll probably swap them out now that I’m sailing in the med and I can pick and chose my weather windows a little better.

    Great video Morgan. Did you have any concerns about Orca’s? We wanted to take our boat from Northern Ireland to the Med this summer…but just can’t entertain the thought of having the boat damaged by Orca’s.
    We are more likely to head for Madeira and the Canaries.
    Lovely video. Lovely clean, well maintained yacht. What is she?
    Happy sailing. ⛵️

    • @sailingsafar
      @sailingsafar  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks Hugh! To be honest, I was terrified of the Orca situation, I made the mistake of joining the Orca Attack FB page and it gave me the impression that I was almost guaranteed an encounter. On reflection 100s of boats were sailing each day, and only a very small percentage even saw Orcas and that was mostly around Sines, I looked at the data and decided to sail well offshore for my passage south along the Portuguese coast, roughly around 50nm, this kept me well clear of ships, fishing boats and fishing traps… it also meant I could relax a little more for sleeping while solo. I thought about the amount of time you sail and don’t see dolphins, and they’re far more widespread, so for an Orca encounter you really would just have to be in the wrong spot at the wrong time.
      Madeira and the Canaries will be amazing and the route from Ireland should also keep you clear of any trouble. Good luck if/ when you do make the passage, and let me know how you get on! I was hoping to get there myself to line up with an Atlantic crossing, but I was running low on time with work, so I’ve decided to delay a year and do some cruising in the med, but I’ll sail towards the canaries at the back end of this summer I think.
      Safar is a Saltram Saga 36, very few made, She was the first of her type and to be honest I’m very pleased with her.
      All the best, Morgan

      Hi Richard, hope you’re well.
      I have the Raymarine AIS700 unit, at the time I thought this was best because it came with the integrated splitter, but I wish I had done more research as this unit isn’t Wi-fi capable and the only way to use it on your tablet is by using the mirror screen function via the chart plotter, which nearly always disconnects and causes problems.
      I think if I had my time again I’d look at fitting an em-trak B924, that seems to tick all the boxes and is only around £100 more. Hope that helps

    Hi Morgan, great to have you back on your lovely boat. Yes the work life balance is so hard to get right on a boat, and we all know that boats chew money up and spit it out with a total disregard to our financial situation! I was a yachty for 30 years and even on 2 and 2 I was not really using the boat well enough. You will figure out what works for you and of course the Med season is much longer than the Baltic where my baby lies ……. For now anyway.
    Fair winds at work and play, all the best Jon

      Thanks Jon! Good to hear from you and hope Mandala Is doing well over the winter season? When are you able to get back to her and start sailing again? I know you talked about Norway, but after a winter in the Baltic some sun must now be appealing? I was fortunate enough to have 2/2 with my last role (Bosun) and that's become a bit of a deal breaker for me now purely because of Safar, but things are looking good for the next role which is 8 weeks on/off so that's should give me plenty of time to continue cruising this year.

    Thank you for bringing us along your voyage once again. I love watching you sail and make decisions along the way which is so real and honest. As true as the sea and the wind as I could ever imagine. I am curious though... did the staysail give any added stability to the wing-on-wing downwind sail as you have envisaged?

    • @sailingsafar
      @sailingsafar  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Joseph! I don’t think I’ve ever received a nicer comment!
      My pursuit for low roll down wind set up continues unfortunately, I’m sure having the staysail up, sheeted in hard does help to slow the roll to a small degree, but it adds nothing to her passage making. Next up I’ll try twin headsails and a triple reef main, that’s looks good in my head, but could upset the balance 🤔
      I think the only way of avoiding the roll is to crack off a few degrees and not sail dead downwind.
