Hi, I’m Morgan Cole, a solo sailor with ambitions to travel the oceans on my 1980's long keel sailing boat “Safar.”
In my video's, I aim to keep the content fun, honest and informative when possible. I share my elation when things go right and I'll share my thoughts when things go wrong.
My boat Safar is a 1985 Saltram Saga 36, built in Plymouth, UK. One of only fifteen made, Safar was the first 36 out of the mould and built to spec for her original owner, a Frenchman who sailed Safar all over the world and competed in multiple transatlantic races.

In this episode, we rejoin the adventures onboard Safar for the last time during the 2023 season. Conditions for the passage couldn't be better and Safar really takes flight for the 160nm passage from Lanzarote - Tenerife

The adventures continue onboard Safar, with my eldest brother Liam joining me for the 290nm passage from Alicante to Gibraltar, variable conditions were experienced along the route, from lulls of no wind to strong gusts and lightning strikes. When the breeze picked up, Safar made great progress and used every ounce of canvas to propel her to Gibraltar.

In this episode, I complete my solo passage to Alicante and unexpectedly arrive for the opening ceremony of The Ocean Race. On passage, conditions were almost perfect with low swell and plenty of breeze to get Safar moving on a broad reach.

In this episode, I rejoin Safar after a 2 month hiatus while I have been at work in the South Pacific. During this time, Safar has also undergone some work to her hull to ensure she's slippy and ready for the fourth coming season. I'm a little rusty, both with my sailing and with my filming, but my skills sharpen throughout the episode and together me and Safar press East into the Med.

Wow WHAT boat is this? Yeah its a double ender you don't see many of those anymore. I wish these sailers would define their boats and what year they are so WE the people could look them up.

Hi Morgan, For some reason I haven't been getting notifications about your latest videos. That looked like a very mixed passage. I hate the light wind situations where you can't get enough wind to hold the sails taught and the boat rolls around with everything slapping and banging. You did well and as always I'm very envious of your ability with the drone. Just about to watch the next episode. Take care .... Dave

I will be following your stories as i plan to buy a yacht in Croatia in October and sail around the Mediterranean, then back to UK. Binge watching all of your videos and learning as much as possible. Please dont get an annoying girlfriend as most solo sailors eventually do....thx again

Doing laundry. You can of course drag the laundry behind the boat, but I think and know a better solution. Rinse your laundry and then put it in a keg with water and detergent. The motion of the boat does the job of a washing machine. 12 hours is more than enough. Just rinse it.

Great episode! -- QUESTION -- I am looking for a full tour of the inside and outside of your sailboat. Is there a tour video? Must say it looks so so clean and perfect inside. Not a scratch or dirt or anything so please do a video if possible as I am sure there are others that would like to watch that. Keep up the great work and don't give a second thought to the "girlfriend" and "car" nonsense. You are living a great life from what I can see :)
your boat sails well on all points, is she a full keel or long fin keel? and how much ballast does she carry? Thanks
What size engine is your Beta? Is there a video showing you installing it or oing over the specs?
Really nice! -- QUESTION -- We love watching you sail. You present very well. We were thinking, initially, of getting an Alberg 37 or maybe a Cape Dory 36, but some people say the Alberg is too narrow and that all that overhang creates a weird movement at sail. Your sailboat seems like it is much wider and fuller than the Alberg but I don't know anyone who has been on both the Saga and an Alberg... Any thoughts between these sailboats? Is yours more seaworthy and does it sail better?
Great sailing. I just did this summer what you did, Calp small mountain looked nice from the sea. I have a boat similar to yours in size. Small mast. My mast has a fixed fitting at the middle to install a staysail and use my boat as a cutter rig just like you have yours in Safar. My question to you is if there is no need of running backstays to support the force on the middle of the mast? Cheers!!!

@@sailingsafar Thanks for your comment. I'm South African but lived in So cal for 9 years. I sailed a Catilina 30ft from Marina del Rey. It was my uncles yatch and he showed me the ropes,so to speak. I worked part time for Gallion G underwater maintenance in the the Marina and the condition of many yatchs was rather frightening. It's all about maintenance and more maintenance. Once a year you would dry dock the yatch to clean,paint and serious inspections. It's a whole science. Yeah,great times. I'm back in South Africa but miss California. My beautiful daughter is there. She coming to visit in April 2024. God bless you my Bru. You take darn good care as I do.
Great effort I really enjoyed your passage to the Canaries. I undertake similar sailing passages on my boat Momentum in the southern hemisphere, sailing from Sydney down to and around Tassi and return. You’ve motivated me to now produce more of my TH-cam clips of the passage. Thx

Thanks Maesy! Victorias are great boats, Safar Is a Saltram Saga 36, there was only 15 made, so not they’re not widely known, buts she’s a very safe and capable boat with a good turn of speed in a blow! All the best, Morgan

Great video mate, Safar is a beautiful boat. I'm living on board my boat in Ireland after a transatlantic circuit and dreaming already of going again, you're helping fuel those dreams! A question; you mention setting your radar to come on intermittently, what radar do you have? I have a B&G halo and couldn't find any way to set up this functionality. Cheers!
Congratulations on completing the circuit! Its no easy achievement. I’m hoping to do it with Safar. I have the Raymarine Quantum 2, the function is called “Timed Transmit Mode” Which basically puts the radar to sleep after a sequence of scans and wakes it again after a preset interval. I would think B&G would have something similar as they’re generally the best instruments money can buy.
