  • In this episode, I battle with indecision about which way I should sail, time constraints and financial problems are at the forefront of my mind and ultimately I have to make hard a choice which will shape the rest of my sailing season.

      Thanks Doug! Never easy changing plans mid trip, but very glad I did after having such a good sail and time in Gibraltar so far.

    Good luck with your cruise. The beauty of sailing and not having schedules, is that you can just turn downwind to more comfortable points of sail. I'd be much happier out of busy sealanes though . Gibraltar is conveniently placed. No wonder we don't want to give it up. Wonder where the winter storms will blow you next!?

    Nice video; thanks. Why would you be chased away if you anchored in Tarifa?

      I think the advice I received perhaps wasn't the most accurate after speaking with some locals in Gibraltar. On the east side you will almost certainly be moved along by the pilot boat / Harbour authorities. On the west side, it is charted as a nature reserve, but I see a fair amount of reviews online by sailors so it's likely that all would have been fine for a overnight stay. I guess I just didn't want to run the risk of being sent on my way in the middle of the night 😅

    Great Bootspeed, she loves to go fast. Wenn I sailed her from Gibraltar to the IJselmeer I was doing up to 10 knotes.

    Well done for another great and honest video. I love the boat and am curious to see a Saga 36 in action especially as Pat Lawless is racing one against Rustlers and Biscays ( in the GGR) to good effect. Also good to see the Aries vane gear doing a great job. I love those units and not really sure why the GGR’s are nearly entirely Hydrovanes….🤔. Keep it up I really hope you succeed with your channel, it’s certainly 👍 from me 👏👏

    • @sailingsafar
      @sailingsafar  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank youfor such kind words! Not quite sure where the channel will take me yet, but I'm just trying to show the sort of stuff I'd be interested in watching myself. I do love getting the drone out and seeing Safar sail from that external aspect also. The Aries has really grown on me, it's my first wind vane steering system and I'm definitely a fan for life! I imagine the GGR boats opt for the Hydrovane partly because it fills their requirements for an emergency steering system. I'm very impressed with Pat's progress so far and I'm really looking forward to seeing his Saga in the southern ocean, I think that's where she'll come into her own! Safar certainly enjoys a stiff breeze!

    On your stern pulpit on the port side just before the lifelines run forward there is a round circle it looks like stainless steel which sometimes has a white object in
    it what is that ?

      Hi Roger, It's a towable water generator "Aquir 100" I talk about it briefly in my Ep4 Part 2 video, after I lost the towable propeller during a night passage. Hope this helps

    Great adventure bro! New subscriber!
    What and where were you taken by police for?
    I'm leaving the UK for the Med at the end of February... Need some freedom and don't want to leave one prison country for another!!

      @sailingsafar  ปีที่แล้ว

      Really appreciate the subscribe and glad you’re enjoying the channel so far! So Tarifa is one of the main transit ports between Africa and Europe, so I guess when they saw a small boat with a young (Ish) guy onboard they just wanted to make sure I wasn't up to no good, this was around 7 years ago, I had originally anchored in the outer harbour which the pilot book and charts all indicated was fine, but I guess that’s not the case, after discussing my situation at the station and after a few hours of having all my documents checked they let me go 😅
      Good luck on your journey, look forward to see you on the water!

    • @sailingsafar

      Pretty much just regular home cooked meals! Safar has a really well equipped galley and a fridge! (Hoping to save a boat tour video for when I return to work) And the police situation 😬 Tarifa is one of the main transit ports between Africa and Europe, so I guess when they saw a small boat with a young (Ish) guy onboard they just wanted to make sure I wasn't up to no good, after a few hours of having all my documents checked they let me go 😅

      I do find it challenging to make the decision initially, as sometimes I feel like I've failed the boat! but ultimately, I'm pretty flexible with my cruising plans so if I'm not in the Canary Islands now, I'll just make sure I get there next time round.

    Great episode! The flexibility of your journey makes viewing interesting. Love the high shots above the stern. The Saltrams must be the quietest boats at anchor as there is no annoying wave slap on the stern.

    • @sailingsafar

      Thanks Craig! I've been really impressed at how little Safar gets "poop'd" I almost never take any water over the stern with her shape.
