    Disappointing that they improved MPG’s by only 1-3 but then drastically decreased the fuel tank size! Would’ve been nice to have a truck with longer range capabilities.

      Literally speaking the truth I can’t stand when they give you basically 300 miles to the tank like make that crap atleast 400-500 miles I rather pay more upfront than have to refuel every 5 days it’s so freaking annoying

      Yea I thought I had film as to why that was shrunk but I guess I didn’t. I wish it was more too. Hopefully the hybrid gets a bit better of mpg to offset.

      If it’s anything like the next Gen RAV4 or Tundra dynamic force engine except real world efficiency to increase 50%. The new Tundra is at least 50% better. The 5.7 got 12 the 3.4 TT gets 18.

    Given your experience with your 22 and 23 Tundras and what you’ve seen of the new Taco, if you were looking to pick a new truck, which would you lean toward (all things considered)? I really want more rear legroom, but the Tundra fit and trim has me worried. Appreciate any opinion you have.

      My 24 Pro Tundra has no issues so far, only 2k miles (almost) but it's awesome !!!

      Amazing question. In all fairness, I’ve only been in pre production Tacomas. So idk what the fit and finish will be like, but I’d still pick a Tacoma over a Tundra if I had to pick one.

      @@Sam-dq7ws that's great to hear. Maybe Toyota fixed the window rattles in the 24 Tundra. @TRDJon has had window rattles in both his 22 and 23. The drivetrain seems flawless for most (not all, but most), so I am fairly comfortable with that part of it, but rattles would drive me crazy. Hopefully yours continues to be rattle-free. I really like the Tundra and hope Toyota fixes the issues. The Tacoma is their bread and butter, so I think they will be all over any initial issues.

    Two major takeaways from every channel that drove the taco- drivetrain and driving dynamics are light years better than the third gen. That is very compelling to me.

      Yeah, but we've never actually seen someone rip the damn thing it's always on some little premade course that Toyota came up with barely driving at 3 mph that doesn't show its true capability at all.

    They said the 3rdg gen was better then the 3nd, we know how well the transmission was in the beginning. Took them 3 years to fix it... I wait 3 years to see...

    Don't mind me; I'll just be hanging out here in the comments reading all the hot takes from random dudes who never finished high school who somehow know more than Toyota's chief engineers because they read a Reddit post from some other guy who didn't finish 7th grade who heard that his old high school football coach once saw a 2022 Tundra on the side of the road and assumed it had broken down due to exploded turbos. Or something.

      My favorite are people who appear to be unaware that semi-trucks have been using turbo's forever. If the engine is designed for turbo use from the ground up, it will be fine.

It's just that Toyota so rarely introduces radical redesigns that most of these negative posters were in middle school and don't remember the last time a new Toyota powertrain was introduced.

      Had an IS 200t years ago, solid, solid powertrain with the 8 speed. If we kept it, it would have well over 100k miles with zero issues. I take great care of the mechanicals and fluids.
      Our 2020 4Runner has 76k miles, every fluid was changed. Runs amazing, even the transmission pulls harder and shifts smoother since changing that fluid.
      I’d get the taco.

    So cooling in the TRD Off Road is more substantial than the TRD Sport? I was under the assumption the two power plants were the same. Have a deposit on a Sport and plan on frequently towing a travel trailer. Now I’m wondering if I should switch my deposit to an Off Road….

    The issue with forced induction is specific to SMALL GAS engines. I’ve heard the argument “million mile turbo diesel” but the problem is that smaller displacement engines simply cannot handle the extra boost pressure over long timelines. They’ll all need to be rebuilt at 100/150k miles. There’s just scientifically no chance that these will last anywhere near as long as the NA v6, which will probably outlive most of us. What you’re witnessing is the death of stock trucks that will go 300/400k miles with basic maintenance. Do what you want with that information, but don’t gaslight people about the new ones being as reliable.

      And the idea of a “reliable” 4 cylinder truck that is meant to “go fast off-road” is just ridiculous. The more boost this engine gets, the shorter its lifetime. You’re getting a $65k truck that will be fun for a couple years and then need its engine rebuilt.

    "completley new" scares me a bit when it comes to engine components. But this is Toyota so hopefully its reliable. If I was in the market, I'd wait a few years before getting a gen4

      A 2nd gen should be able to if it has the required equipment like proper hitch receiver and trailer wiring harness. But aside, yes this new one, again if properly equipped, will be able to tow up to it's rated capacity of 6-6500lbs.

      I had that problem one time when I tried to reserve the trailer online but when I called them they set it up no problem. I have towed uhaul car trailers three times now. One thing you can try is to tell them that you are towing a lighter car like a VW beetle on the trailer. They calculate weight of trailer+car and use that to determine if they’ll let you rent it or not.

    Jon, I have a question. I need a new truck quick, got rid of my 16 Land Cruiser, now I want to get a new truck so I can start doing some over landing on the weekends. Should I pick up the 3rd gen or should I just wait for the 4th gen? Should I consider the tundra? Help me out here Jon it would be much appreciated. Thank you and love the content

While I trust Toyota with my life, if you plan on over-landing and doing long trips away from help, you might be better off getting a TRD off/road or Pro 3rd gen and then in 3-5 years get a slightly used 4th gen after the kinks have been worked out

    3rd gen owners dont feel bad at all. You've all got a gem in ur garage
    It's gonna be a high demand generation in the future n will continue to be the most reliable one
    Dont get fooled by the new technology. We all know doesnt matter even its toyota who developed this new turbo engine but it's nowhere gonna be as reliable like the 3rd gen

    Does the Taco engine use timing chain or timing belt? and what type of engine oil does it use?
    I've heard that most of the newer Toyota models use 0W-8 engine oil which is really expensive to buy and hard to find.

    I just sold my beloved v6 PreRunner (2015) and now I am truck less. I had plans on getting the latest OffRoad available (2023), but maybe considering the 4thGen Tacoma. Which truck - 2023 or 2024 - would be a better option for towing around 3,500lbs? The 2024 forced induction engines sound cool and all, but maybe less reliable down the line? If I'm towing, I reckon I would only speed up the wear and tear of an already waning turbocharged engine. Thoughts?

    Ok. I came back to rewatch this because other reviewers have had a different toyota engineer say at this exact mockup that ALL have 3" plumbed cooling, but this guy says only the TRD Offroad packaged ones have it. Same with the sealed belt tensioner. Is there really any engine differences between TRD and non TRD engines in the new tacoma??????

    Why can't Toyota get a decent oil filter setup? They finally got rid of that ridiculous plastic cartridge housing, But they replaced it with a horizontally mounted filter so your skidplate fills up with oil and drips for days on your driveway

      Maybe it'll have a channel or guide for oil. My F-150 has something right underneath the filter that funnels it to a drip point. Super easy and mess free, then just wipe it up. Even if it doesnt though you can buy a flexible and moldable drain guide that eliminates that as well.

    My biggest concern is what I see on that 3.5 inch inlet - I really hope that isn't plastic. The one thing I get so sick and tired of is components that are meant to handle high temperatures having a plastic part (polycarbonate or whatever) somewhere on the cooling system be it for engine or oil. I've seen far too often, and even experienced it too often, that parts in that system being plastic just ends up having and astronomically high failure rate in hotter climate/running conditions that can lead to catastrophic failure too easily.

    My two cents as a 3rd gen Tacoma enthusiast (maybe a hot take)
    If I were in the market for a new truck right now I wouldn't take the 4th gen Tacoma. I wouldn't take anything that comes with an Inline-4 Turbo honestly. Nothing but one option comes to mind, and as weird as it is to say... the Nissan Frontier is a damn great choice if I wanted a truck that is close in comparison to the 3rd gen Taco.

    Get rid of the 4-Cllylinder and I might get one Ya Right I love my 2005 Tacoma V6 4x4 and I will keep it till I die or if my truck dies, or I will rebuild it like new I would never get a truck with a 4-Cylinder ever the truck looks nice and lots of new things like the rear disk brakes but that should have been done starting with the 2005 Tacoma very late in getting the rear disk brakes and they say it gets better gas miles but I heard it has a smaller gas tank????? so much for the better gas miles :( sad days for us off-roaders and you will have to replace the turbos around one hundred thousand miles my Tacoma V6 4x4 has just got 150, thousand miles on it and not leaks or problems very happy with it I should get another 150, thousand miles out of it :) Toyota has jumped on the 4-Cylinder band wagon sad days for us Tacoma drivers and one more thing an air dam on a 4x4 how much will that cost extra just to remove it and throw it away???????????????.

    LB7/First gen duramax engines had 300 HP and 520 lb-ft of torque. So consider where the hybrid taco engine is sitting 20 years later 🤯

      @@Cody_Austin I get that. My point was to emphasize the fact that gas engines, despite their HP, torque, and tow rating will not do work at the same level a diesel will. Nor last as long if asked to do it. Always take gasser tow stats with a grain of salt.

    Thanks for the informative video. Did you get any more information on the Bilstein shocks and how they operate? I saw the cutaway in the background and the inside doesn't look like a typical shock. It looks like it has additional zones or something going on inside.

      @@TRDJon But not a huge ammount. The Tundra MPG rating went from 13/14 City / 17 Highway (15 combined) to a taing of 17-24 MPG (20 combined). Adn average of 4ish MPG increase. The 3g Taco was rated at 20-24 MPG, and the new 4g Taco is rated 20-26 MPG, not a huge boost, but also not that 4 MPG increase on both sides.

      If an engine is designed from the ground up with a turbocharger in mind, it can last forever... semi-trucks and other industrial engines use turbochargers for huge miles without issue. Turbo's got a bad rep in consumer applications because, for a long time, they were bolted onto engines that hadn't been designed for turbo applications.

    Anyone know if you have to remove the truck body to replace the turbo if it does fail, like the new 2024 Tundra?
    My understanding is that only one of the turbos on the tundra can be replaced without taking body off the frame

    Engineering 101 - simpler designs are inherently more reliable. This violates that rule, but time is the true test. I’m sceptic where these engine will be in 12 years with 150k miles.

    higher vehicle cost, higher interest rate, higher maintenance cost with the turbo, higher insurance, higher extended warranty cost vs a slow none hyper powertrain, paid off low maintenance, lower insurance 3rd gen. Oh v6 Mt 19 to 20mpgs 4th gen 21 to 22mpgs. where are the savings !!!! okay and the frame again the 2nd gen has a boxed frame then went to open C frame on 3rd gen, the selling point was flexibility to maintain tires contact with the roads, now 4th gen boxed frame and selling point is rigidity. The turbo engine will require 91 octane 3000 miles oil change intervals and proper ways to drive a turbo engine warming and cooling.
    Frankenstein setup, what is this engineer trying to say !

    Go check out TFL’s Tacoma. The diff went out on their first off-road test. Tell me again how this new gen is more reliable??? Shoulda kept the v6 in the Taco and the v8 in the Tundra. Bad move, Toyota. Your reputation for QDR is on the decline.

    No offense intended, but I'm more persuaded by histories, repair records, and other metrics of longevity and reliability than pretty props and the word of an engineer who is paid by the company. I'm skeptical of this gamble by Toyota in putting this little engine in a truck that has increased in size and weight. We shall see.
