- Aston Martin is gunning for Red Bull with its 2024 F1 car - which has revealed a key change that Mercedes has made.
Aston Martin started last year as Red Bull’s closest challengers and has made “changes all over” with its 2024 car, which it hopes will be able to fight for a first win in this identity - the last victory coming as Racing Point in 2020.
It has adopted the view that Red Bull is “absolutely beatable” in 2024, with technical director Dan Fallows declaring Aston Martin is “very pleased with what we’ve been able to achieve but this is the first step”.
What Mercedes has done will play a significant role in that. We’ve known that Mercedes wanted to make a big mechanical platform change with its 2024 car after two years of struggling to crack this era of technical regulations, and the AMR24 gives us the first clue of how Mercedes intends to do that.

I am cautiously optimistic
I believe AM will be great, even 2nd best but not able to beat RB, i dont think anyone will do that
It's easy to make the prediction that RB will continue to dominate from where they left off in the 2023 season but time will tell, primarily the first few races will be very telling where things stand. AMR seems pretty confident going into this season and I'm also cautiously optimistic about their prospects this year. Many of their racing operation investments have come good this year, primarily their own wind tunnel although I believe the 24 car was still designed in the old one but regardless they moved into a new office and their processes have been more streamlined all with the hope that it will improve development to the car throughout the year. Really looking forward to this season.
Wdym, if Mercedes can be beatable, so can redbull
Well your not *cautiously optimistic* then ur just pessimistic 😅
@@ArthurZakaryan23 yap yap yap
@@shadzgohan2.0not really, considering Merc was only incrementally better than AM, whereas RB is a an entire order of magnitude improved over both. It’s a big gap and not at all the same leap.
I love how Aston Martin built what looks like a GoPro Special Front Wing. They did a great job making the camera look like it's encased and just a part of the wing.
But it's just duct taped on. The carbon fibre blends in with the tape, making it look like it's built-in
My issue isn't the launch car, or how good it looks with the newer platform. It's this teams ability to actually develop the car over the season. RB won't get a lot of time and testing, but they're unleashed to use all the time they will be given. They can't spend another 6 weeks in limbo trying to figure out why they're going backward instead of forward
It would be funny if the RB20 have zero pods and pull rod rear suspension then wins every race.😂
The zeropods were never the real problem for Merc. They adjusted it because normal sidepods also gave them some aero benefits on points the were struggling with, but Merc's main problem was the floor.
Bruh
Bruh
the sole reason zeropods didn't work for merc is because of suspension geometry if the rules were set for maybe 10 years? merc would have absolutely kept the same design and start changing the suspension system slowly by slowly its just that they had just 3 years to go from a cardinal mistake to a race winning car, redbull got lucky that newey was the only one on the grid to have already worked with ground effects so he knew what problems they might face, if newey went zeropods with the push rod at the front and pull at the back there is no doubt he will fail again that is going against his own aero philosophy
People acting like Red Bull didn’t develop a new car while everyone else did😂
Of course they did but since their performance is already so optimal the challengers have a bigger margin of improvement.
I agree, but I also think that other teams have more margin to improve than redbull. Is there more risk trying to improve a dominant car? The gap will hopefully be closer 🙌
@@soundscape26you beat me to it 😂
Well the thing is we expect RB to still win the championship but improvements to be marginal with diminishing returns on the each update.
@@ElectricIro 😄
Not mentioned as a weakness (or strength) was the way the 2023 car used its tires compared to the rest. it was esier on them for the most part but that led to them not being able to fire the tires up in qualifying at times, or to bulid temps after a stop In cool conditions. Also last years car had a drag penalty that was only partially addressed as the season progressed. I'm assuming those things have been considered in this years car.
The fact that all teams are still copying the '23 Red Bull car, only shows how far ahead that car was and that other teams just will not have closed down the margin. I'll go so far as to say the '23 RBR car would still be hard to beat in 2024.
The first couple of races could tell us if RBR will be dominant on 2024 too, but there are reasons to believe that this season could be at least "interesting". Silly season aside, on the years 2004, 2011 and 2020 we saw some of the most dominant seasons of F1 at the time, but on each one of them just a year later we got some of the best seasons F1's got to offer. That doesn't mean 24 will be great, neither that Max will not win the next WDC (Vettel won on 2012 for that matter, but the championship battle lasted until the very last race)
@@samuelromero4696In every single one of your examples, there are significant regulation changes. In 2024, there is none. Expect much of the same as 2023.
@@ihsanjayadi88 I'll have to investigate more about those seasons later but...... From 20 to 21 i remember that Floor angle related technical directive which indeed at the time was called "Anti-Merc" rule change so fair enough.
The thing is, by 04-05 i was a kid so i didn't care about those things back then, but on 11-12 i honestly don't remember a rule change or an important technical directive of that time. The one i know was the '13 change of the tire pressure on the Pirelli's (after that change RBR won every single race until the end of the season)
@@samuelromero4696
“Silly season aside” - Yes, please!
@@ihsanjayadi88no there was no significant changes between 2011 and 2012
I would love to see Fernando on the winners podium and challenging for the drivers title. What a great story that would be. It’s going to be an exciting 2024 season.
Alonso coming back to get a win before he leaves, if not a championship, it would be one of the greatest stories of attrition and perseverance in motorsport.
I hope We will witness Alonso 's win a couple of races in 2024...
@@Ryzard
Not to mention what it means regarding how we perceive aging in the world of motorsport. Cognition and reflexes still have to be top notch for him to be able to drive an F1 car even remotely competitively and he's outmanoeuvred young talents multiple times last season
@@TMmodify for sure. I know that Alonso has to be a huge part of Hamilton
A: wanting to stay
B: getting that huge contract at Ferrari
Because his existence and continued skill shows that Hamilton may well have another half decade left in him, and they won't just have their skills drop off a cliff at late thirties.
Alonso's 2023 season was one of my favorite (but also bittersweet) sagas in recent times, because there were AMAZING moments.
Seeing his age and experience come into play with the calls he made (ex: after Spanish gp crash as one off the top of my head) watching lance overtaking on screens like max, the battle with Perez...
Dude has been using everything since the Schumacher era regularly. With his lines to defend Perez, to heat up his tyres, making calls on how to set up certain tracks, etc.
Having seen the racing back then, and seeing a car challenging the front *racing like that again* was so heartwarming to me, and brought the hype every weekend he was moving.
That Rookie Alonso needs a ride in a big team like Mercedes but I want to see him do another great year at Aston Martin
Aston Martin is a "big team" they're at cost cap with a works engine and the same amount of employees as Mercedes, big sponsors big named engineers plus a new factory and wind tunnel...
@@theoonyoutubethis
He could be a champion one day, once Max retires!
@@theoonyoutube They don't even have a works suspension let alone a works engine. AM is just Mclaren without a second driver.
@@louiscypher4186 Lance Stroll. Woe is us race fans. He has had every opportunity, every support, every investment anyone could ever ask for and STILL he’s a disappointment, even with rare flashes above mediocrity. I wish ALO was partnered with someone with more hunger and commitment than what we’ve seen from Lance. Lawrence deserves it and so do we.
I hope AM does beat Red Bull but I have a feeling they’ll start off well then RB will quickly pull away throughout the season
The RBR ENGINEER that went to AM….brought all his RBR knowledge with him. But Newey developed further…. 🤭💪
I really want to know how rb would deal with Newey retiring tbh (I don’t expect much to happen but still interesting nonetheless)
You expect to see some convergence as a Formula specs continues on from year to year but I don't see how teams can beat Red Bull at their own game. When Red Bull were finally able to nip the drivers Championship from Mercedes in 2021they did not change their platform to adopt the Mercedes concept... the soldiered on with their much shorter wheelbase/ high rake car with incremental improvements and a big power/ reliability boost once Honda was on board while other teams mimicked Mercedes Long Wheelbase/ Low rake design and fell further and further adrift.
We will see how "beatable" RB are come Bahrain...
The Race has the best coverage of these new cars. I really appreciate the information in these videos.
Don't forget the hyphen
Lol
Depends on which Red Bull; the one of Perez (most likely) or the one of Max (Not likely).
Merc implementing Anti - Squat and Anti- dive just now is enough to see how big the development gap between RB and the others truly is
The key is hidden we know Adrian did something for the RB suspension. This was one the keys to Max winning so much.
looks more radical, though i am anticipating a similar season as to last year
Wouldnt anti squat be the front of the wishbone higher than the rear? The top wishbone being more angled than the lower wishbone would just increase the anti squat under load. Is there a photo of the lower wishbone (ideally with the wheel off) that would tell us the angle at ride height
Amr is like the Ferrari of 2017,2018 . They will come with a good car in the beginning of the season. But will eventually get defeated in the development race throughout the season .
Sidepods are turning into side wings. haha
Decision or Desicion? 😅😅 Love the work! Keep it up! 🙌🏾
Yeah, but the thing is they are all chasing the 2023 Red Bull car, but what the hell are they gonna do when RB’s 2024 car shows up ?😂
They're engineers, they obviously know that.
IKR. Everyone is chasing the RB18, but now Redbull is moving forward with the RB19. They had a year with the setup while everyone will have to learn it.

Fr max gonna win whole races 🤣
My thoughts for the entire season lol. There's no way you'd show the full potential with an advantage like that, there's no need to
Max's big flex besides the whole season was pulling a pit stop from the lead just so he could get the fastest lap. No Max let's just bring the car home. OK I'm coming in!😂
I don't get how they are so optimistic and still have Stroll as a driver. Alonso must be having backpain at this point.
That AM has beautiful lines. I hope its as fast as it looks!
Ngl the car looks gorgeous. Simple yet gorgeous.
I will say that if anyone has a chance to beat Redbull before the 26 rule changes it will either be Merc or Aston. With Lewis leaving in ‘25 it’s more than likely going to be Aston.
Ferrari too believe
Aston was miles off RB and weren't even close to winning a race on a proper race track (their only real chance may have been Monaco).
Aston being good is a myth, it was Ferrari and Merc being terrible at the start of the season and McLaren being nowhere either.
Honestly, if anyone its McLaren, rhey showed much more momentum and cohesive in season development progression than Aston. Ferrari I'd give an outside shot to as well. Mercedes and Aston though.. idk about that tbh.
@@daarom3472 Ferrari won’t come close. They are hedging their bets on the new engine configurations in 26 to start winning championships. I stand by my comments. Either Merc or Aston.

Lance rolling contract is just so funny to me
I cannot understand why the team are putting him on a pedestal when he stuffs cars into the wall every other week and is battered by his teammates nearly every year.

The assumption here are
1) RB who were comfortably half a second ahead of AS is standing still.
2) RB are proven to be great at development including in season. Something AS has sofar fumbled as recently as last season.
3) In the event there was parity in the cars, AS driver pairing is less formidable than RB line up. On that basis I think their assumptions are fairly misplaced though it's good to have ambition.
Pretty the guy typing, ‘Lance Stroll (Rolling)’ must’ve had a chuckle or two😂
What does it mean exactly to have “control over the mechanical platform”?
my guess is they're now developing the car around the mechanical limitations of the Mercedes powertrain, making it a beneficial part of the whole package
instead of treating it like a roadblock to dodge from
Fingers crossed for this team this year!
Please do something to mitigate the very strong "hiss" on S sounds. Very difficult listening sometimes
how about a 3-on-3-off arrangement with Drugovitch? Or would the FIA/FOM find some way to nix it, for no other reason than they can.
Perfect...
I have far more confidence on AM beating RB than Mercedes for some reason. Specially from 2026 and on with Honda PUs.
Aston Martin: Red Bull are absolutely beatable!
Max sitting in the RB20 in 3 weeks on Sunday starting from pole: Are you sure about that? 24 wins out of 24 go BRRRRRRRR.
Yes, while the upgrades on the AM look nice, people need to remember that Red Bull is doing upgrades as well. The problem with copying the RB car is that you will always be 1 step behind what they are doing.
24/24 would be crazy the FIA will change the rules if that happens. They want more americans to watch it
Great analysis!
My fear is that VCARB will be too powerful thanks to the RBR's front pullrod suspension
Top 3 is a lot more reasonable, but i am really really really hoping their expectations are realistic and will do amazing this year
I guess its a step in the right direction but isnt big enough to keep LH at Merc. I feel RB need not be worried, we'll only know at Bahrain.
That's the spirit. Lets actually try and fight them. Not just conform. If we can't, then at least we made an effort. Thats the energy we need.
Great analysis
With stroll, AM can never gun down RB in the constructors
"Everyone has a target on their back"
Mercedes changing to push rod rear will allow better airflow.through the rear wing and diffuser, and is the first time in two years that I believe they actually have an idea of how to improve performance.
Aero is the king, otherwise you can have a tone of engine power but your tyres last two laps.
Looking forward to the first test but really qualifying for the first race. Hope their is a mixed grid.
I find it extremely interesting that Aston is using fully bare carbon, without any superflous resin, unlike last year and the other cars revealed so far. One would think that this would worsen drag, but perhaps they have found some upside to the uneven surface of the bare carbon?
How can you tell?
@@Lianpe98 Look at the shots from the front of the front suspension. Not as shiny, and a bit rough and bumpy looking. It seems most of the carbon on the car looks this way.
Like a golfball has aero and sharks with sandpaper rough skin, the bumps help hold the boundary layer of air to the body to let the air stream slip by. Perfectly smooth is good at lower speeds but at high speed, it's shown the boundary layer adds turbulence (and drag) to the airsteam. It's a fine line how deep the small contours should be.
@@pauls5745 sure, this has been demonstrated before. But bare carbon has been a thing for a while now, why would nobody else use it if it is superior? That's the real question here. Has Aston figured something out to change the game, or is it more of a "see what sticks" kind of thing?
Lots of Red Bulls on the grid this year!
How is this all working out so far
Tell that to Adrian Newey 😂

Kimi is another WC out there
just because mercedes switched to what redbull has been doing since a long time ago doesnt mean theyre going to beat redbull
You don’t know what you’re saying
true but definitely doesn't mean redbull will dominate without competition
Didn't this start with the W11? Pretty sure this kind of geometry was pioneered by Mercedes.
Did they say that?
A bububu bububu bububububububu. Yeah.
The only major thing I think that could put Merc Aston in front, would be that changing the cooling of the Merc engine from the very tight zero pod concept . This could enable better cooling and thus run the engine higher and counter the aero advantage of the Redbull with brute force.
Ever thought about maximum fuelflow? More drag is killing performance.
Sidepod shape and concept on it's own is incredibly overrated, as have been said by many, many people who understand more about this generation of cars than we all here do... They said countless times, that whats much more important to the overall car performance is underneath the car, or generally in area's that we can't see. Therefore I highly doubt that a change in sidepod dimensions could be the big thing that puts them in front again.
Oh, and you simply can't beat superior aerodynamics with "brute force" in F1... Those times are long (and I mean decades!) gone
The Mercedes engine is underpowered when compared to Ferrari and Honda. It's not just a matter of cooling because even before the drivers got the heating warning, they still weren't quick on the straights
@@giuseppemaggio5894 But both the Mercedes and the Aston were very draggy, so that has to play a role too.

I wish the videos are more straight to the point technical analysis and not elongating it like a news segment.
We'll see
A key factor that's missing here is that the underfloor of the RB 18 has been revealed thx to Checo. with the knowledge of the RB's underfloor, suspensions, and bodyworks, I do believe this year will be very competitive.

no one get close to RB with 10% less wind tunnel time, and you expect one of them can beat RB without the handicap?
Ferrari: hold my beer.
how can aston actually have the latest spec of merc's gearbox and rear suspension but is racing bull only allowed to have last years spec parts of redbull per the rules? shouldnt those rules also apply to merc or ferrari costumer teams ,like that ferrari en merc can only provide other teams with last seasons parts just as redbull can to racingbulls.
Well said
It looks like the designers have done a great job addressing the team’s aerodynamic inefficiencies. Now if only they could design a solution for the huge amount of drag caused by nepotism.
Shocking two different versions of the 2024 car before testing. Who would have thought? lol Only significant reveal is suspension and not at all shocking. Actually as predictable as the sun rising and setting every day.
As for convergence old, old, old news. If you cannot beat them copy them as best you can. But wait RB hasn't been sitting with its thumb up its butt. And if history is prologue all other teams that are not RB have a lot of copying to do.
And then there is the last factor. RB has Max and who in their right mind would not make him the odds on favourite to win it all again even where the cars are theoretically equal?
I am cheering for AM but I am not holding my breathe either. AM is my 2nd team so I want to see them do well. At least 1 win this season would be so amazing

Liberty media is really messing up the sport.
FIA needs to step up.
You can't really see Aston Martin making a serious title challenge if they are essentially a customer Mercedes team. So for as long as AM are in the pocket of Mercedes, Alonso is more than likely to go to Mercedes in the future.
It could be a fast car…but then again they have lance stroll
lotta comments saying it wont be enough to beat RB. But, they forget that verstappen is what RB wins with. if anything puts him out of a race or two race for health reasons, the entire RB superstructure begins to crumble, rapidly... Verstappen is a single point of failure for RB. Whereas teams like Ferrari, Aston, Merc and McClaren have the driver talent spread evenly around. Max may have had his days, or possibly have more. Either way, it is inevitable that talent will peak at some stage and then will subdue.
I think Aston are beatable , however, not if Stroll is 1 half of your driver pairing...
