Xbox Wireless Headset - It Just Fell Off! [Repair]

- I wasn't planning on doing a repair video on my headset, but it just broke!
I was adjusting the volume, and the control just fell off!
The headset has always been looked after, not abused, thrown around the room or even dropped.
This seems to be a fairly common issue, and looks like a design problem.
Microsoft says "just buy a new headset", and unless you buy another broken one, parts aren't readily available.
Let's see what cheap and ingenious method we can come up with, to get it working again.

I just wanted to thank you. My friend had a broken headset that he tried to fix himself and I had to come in behind and repair all his mistakes... Like trying to hot glue a solder connection back together. I know this wasn't a full teardown video but you had enough close up footage for me to piece together which wires went were. Cheers man. You helped me save my friend $100.
No problem. I try to make videos of fairly good quality so they can hopefully end up helping people like yourself trying to repair things. Glad it was of some use to you and well done on repairing your friends headset 👍👍
Nice repair, you can mask arround the nuts and spray some matte black paint to make them less visible :)
Thanks 👍.Yes, or use a black sharpie!
Another very ingenious repair. Sometimes you have to figure out how to repair things with the stuff that you have on hand. It is a shame that the item was designed so poorly. I’m sure that it was not cheap to purchase.
Thanks! Yes I've always had to think on my feet and sometimes come up with non standard ways of fixing things especially when I didn't have parts or parts weren't available. Or where I've had to alter things to make them work, a good example would be the FLIR multimeter if you haven't seen it already 🙂👍
Nicely done Mick. I like the double nut to stop it coming loose 👍
Thanks Vince 👍👍It wasn't a planned repair. I was just using it and it fell off! As you saw, seems a common problem
loving the outside of the box thinking mate 👍 - plus personally if prefer my fixes that aren't quite perfect - shows the work that's been done 😉
Thanks DAD TDM 👍
Wait until the mic just falls off. That's a nice surprise. Thanks for the video, it gave me info on getting the mic boom support out to make a new one.
Thanks and good luck with your mic 👍
Thanks man! I had the same issue and I did exactly what you have done! You helped me a lot, thanks! 👍
You're very welcome. Glad you found it useful 👍
My first thought when I saw the name of the video was that it's the same thing my kids always says "it just fell off" I think I would have been possible to glue a nut to the inside of the "volume part" then used a partially-threaded bolt in the "plate part" and some thread lock in the nut, but I think I might have done the same thing as you did, keep up the great work
Thanks Morten. I could have possibly spent more time thinking of a better solution but I just wanted to use it. I wasn't too bothered what it looked like 😂😂
Thank you for this video. I had to open up that side of the headphones as the power button broke and i couldn't turn them on. I managed to get it open and get access to the power button and then remove it to be able to get access to the power button but the microphone is not working now and i have to keep the headphones on all the time charging via the Xbox as i can't get them back on if i turn them off🤣🤣 the things we do to not spend any money. I think it's time for a new pair now thanks for this video it really helped me
You're very welcome 👍
Good repair. An alternative, perhaps, is to use JB Weld or Araldite to secure the head of a flat / countersunk screw into the outer section (rather than drilling a hole), fitting the nut on the inside.
Thanks Ralph. I had thought about something like that but it might have came off in the future. I know what I did will probably last longer than the headset 😂😂
another cracking vid keep em coming
Thanks mate 👍👍👍
Great inventive solution mate.👍👍
Thanks 👍
Thank you for your good advice on saving $100 buying a new one.
You're very welcome. Glad you found it useful 👍
Black headlining / trim stud from a car would be good but may fail the same way
Top tip - one to watch out for at our local repair cafe events!
Thanks Jon! I volunteer at our local repair cafe too!
Thanks
Thank you for this. I just fixed my sons one .The little metal bit came off his too had to hot glue, gun it back on 😂
Nice 👍I'm glad it was some help to you!
I just received my headphones today, I instantly felt they are weak on that dial, and that is where you normally grab them and pull outwards when putting them on and off your head.
That is why I googled this.
Thanks adrian. I hadn't thought it could be from removing them from your head that could lead to failure 👍
Hi! thanks for the video, which nut and bolt do you recommend for this repair? I'm asking because I don't have any one I would like to buy in Amazon
I think what I used was M4 x 10mm
@@BuyitFixit Thanks!
you can put some shrink tubing to make it look pretty
Hey I never thought of that! Great idea 👍Thanks 🙂
Hey, maybe I should add a screw there since they are new, just to make sure that plastic never breaks :))
So you can still use the slider to adjust the volume if u don't want to repair.
You can, although it will be a bit fiddly to adjust.
Made a good video out of a misfortunate situation. You could cover the nut with a plastic cap and superglue one the other side to match, Custom mod as such
Yes or was thinking BIGGER NUTS! For a Frankenstein look !!
Good Work, What size is the screw and bolt please
Thanks 👍 I think it was a M4X10MM I had a selection of nuts and bolts and that one seemed to fit. The headset is still working fine since my repair and I use it quite regularly 🙂
Why did you make it hole on volume cover side. You can easily get it with glue scrabs outside to inside places on mid.
I just needed it fixed quick and permanently, so I just used what I had 🙂
This has just happened to my headset and my sons went a few month ago. Just fell off. Typical xbox gear made cheaply. What size screw and nut did you use please
I think it was a M4x10mm but not 100% I had a box of assorted nuts and bolts and the one I chose seemed appropriate.
My headset fell off today
Mine was just sitting on my coffee table and just fell off in front of my eyes. Wasn’t even touching it. Lmfao
Damn, I think that definitely shows what a bad design they are. Mine have been fine since my little fix and I've used them quite a lot since they originally broke 👍
Pretty nice job.. if it was me it was rivet over there
Thanks black panther :)
What do i do if the internal volume slider is broken? Is there an alternative to the little part
I'm not too sure. I would have thought it's a standard component. Does it have any markings on it you could perhaps Google lens?
This happen me today i had to say that the headphones never fall i m really carefully with my product’s i was just playing cod on my pc and the wheel juat drop off was really crazy, always this happen with microsoft products they have cheapest materials same hapoen with a mouse wireless and xbox one headset stereo that plastics junk, with elite wireless controller bumpers RB and LB same just broke up and microsoft just clean there hands about warranty’s because those products became junk after warranty expired…
I started having trouble with stick drift so switched to a new controller (might fix the old one still) but then the play and charge kit stopped charging soon after and it's only about a year old.
This thing just fell off on mine too!!
Yes, not a great design!
I have this headset but there seems to be a bug (or it could just be broken with) but mine just doesn't allow me to hear game chats whether it be discord or party's, idk if anyone else has experienced this glitch but it's really annoying, so if anyone knows how to fix it, plz help 😭🙏🏻
It sounds like either a setting in the xbox or the volume control for game / party chat could be broken. I think it might show you the volume levels in the xbox so you can check.
Works with 3mm bolts and nuts
Nice 👍
Wouldn't it be aesthetic nicer to use an epoxy glue to glue a small motherboard standoff to drive to screw into, then you wouldn't see the repair from the outside. Overall a good fix though.
Yeah possibl. I wasn't really going for aesthetics though. I just wanted to use it 😂😂
I just run it broken going to get a better wireless headphones to run Xbox and ps5
Bro it fell off when i fall asleep with them by accident and when I woke up it was just broken
They seem very weak, at least you now know a way to fix them 👍
Does it work with wired headsets ?
I'm not sure as I haven't got a wired one. If they have the same type of volume adjustment then I would think so.
Thanks 😊😊@@BuyitFixit
Brilliant repair maybe Microsoft will copy it lol 😊
Lol. Thanks Cucumber Man 👍
Hi So i had a similar issue but my slider for the volume adjustment fell off do you have any idea what that is called or where i can buy that piece
The slider is called a slide potentiometer. I'm not sure what value or physical size it is. Perhaps you could find a scrap unit on Ebay and remove one from there if you can't get a replacement.
Same side did the same
Yes seems a common problem. My fix is still working and I use the headset quite a few times per week. Hopefully you can now fix yours 🙂👍
@@BuyitFixit super excited to know that you were able to successfully accomplish your task with fixing your problem. Unfortunately my wasn’t successful after all, I had to end up trashing my headphones 😔
Looks as if I will be getting a different pair of headphones this time! Any suggestions?
Sorry to hear about that 🙁 The only other headsets I know about are the turtle beach ones, but I don't have any recommendations.
@@BuyitFixit thanks buddy , turtle beaches
Is all I know about as well
This is because of this that i didnt want to buy this headset
Yes it does seem like a weak point on these.
Xbox. Wireless headset. It. Just fell. Off. ! Repair
bullshit send it back there is a 2 year Garantie
Mine just fell off lol
Dude same happen me yesterday left one just drop, seems we need a collective demand in a thread official microsoft forums with these products and pics its a general trouble and cheap build quality control
@@gamecamacos Do you guys think they broke from dropping them, pulling outwards when putting them on/off head, or from turnning the dial a bit too much over it's limit ?
I feel the rings weak when pulling utwards to put them on/off my head. And if you hold them by the rings and pull outwards, you can see the rings going out around 1 mm.
I'm not sure, mine were never dropped and always looked after. I was literally adjusting the volume slightly and it literally just fell off! I don't think I was removing them via the volume knob, I may have turned them slightly too much perhaps but I'm not even convinced I did that.. bad design, there's loads of other people on reddit with similar stories.
My left one also just fell off.definitely need to all take this to Microsoft together
Yes it's definitely a design flaw...
