Xbox Wireless Headset - It Just Fell Off! [Repair]

  • I wasn't planning on doing a repair video on my headset, but it just broke!
I was adjusting the volume, and the control just fell off!
The headset has always been looked after, not abused, thrown around the room or even dropped.
This seems to be a fairly common issue, and looks like a design problem.
Microsoft says "just buy a new headset", and unless you buy another broken one, parts aren't readily available.
Let's see what cheap and ingenious method we can come up with, to get it working again.

I just wanted to thank you. My friend had a broken headset that he tried to fix himself and I had to come in behind and repair all his mistakes... Like trying to hot glue a solder connection back together. I know this wasn't a full teardown video but you had enough close up footage for me to piece together which wires went were. Cheers man. You helped me save my friend $100.

No problem. I try to make videos of fairly good quality so they can hopefully end up helping people like yourself trying to repair things. Glad it was of some use to you and well done on repairing your friends headset 👍👍

Another very ingenious repair. Sometimes you have to figure out how to repair things with the stuff that you have on hand. It is a shame that the item was designed so poorly. I’m sure that it was not cheap to purchase.

Thanks! Yes I've always had to think on my feet and sometimes come up with non standard ways of fixing things especially when I didn't have parts or parts weren't available. Or where I've had to alter things to make them work, a good example would be the FLIR multimeter if you haven't seen it already 🙂👍

My first thought when I saw the name of the video was that it's the same thing my kids always says "it just fell off" I think I would have been possible to glue a nut to the inside of the "volume part" then used a partially-threaded bolt in the "plate part" and some thread lock in the nut, but I think I might have done the same thing as you did, keep up the great work

Thank you for this video. I had to open up that side of the headphones as the power button broke and i couldn't turn them on. I managed to get it open and get access to the power button and then remove it to be able to get access to the power button but the microphone is not working now and i have to keep the headphones on all the time charging via the Xbox as i can't get them back on if i turn them off🤣🤣 the things we do to not spend any money. I think it's time for a new pair now thanks for this video it really helped me

Good repair. An alternative, perhaps, is to use JB Weld or Araldite to secure the head of a flat / countersunk screw into the outer section (rather than drilling a hole), fitting the nut on the inside.

I just received my headphones today, I instantly felt they are weak on that dial, and that is where you normally grab them and pull outwards when putting them on and off your head.
That is why I googled this.

    • @BuyitFixit

I feel the rings weak when pulling utwards to put them on/off my head. And if you hold them by the rings and pull outwards, you can see the rings going out around 1 mm.
