    I've met and bonded with so many talented musicians at open mics and jam sessions in addition to formal shows I've played. It's a great way to build community, share songs and have fun

      Big time dude! I met 2 of my current house mates from going to open mics when I first moved to the city. They in turn helped me shoot my first professional music video for FREE within a month of moving. Hard to overstate how awesome the return can be on buying beers for random people you like at an open mic.

    Man, I cannot tell you how much I've struggled with music marketing. I went from the whole bots phase, to marketing "courses", to paying for playlisting, to paying facebook and instagram ads, all to figure out over $1,000 - $10,000s spent it doesn't work. Man. I wish I found your channel so much earlier.

    Being 100% honest, just about the only thing I've done correctly has been community. I've plugged into about three different communities that account for the entirety of my fanbase. Every release I have hundreds of people aware of the release and excited to hear it. I need to improve on just about every other aspect, but for someone who sucks at creating social media content, plugging into communities is sooo important. Great stuff Jesse!

    I really appreciate that you're bringing up etiquette. It's so annoying when I'm in a post-rock/ambient Discord and someone drops a horrifically-mixed rap about 'tha bitchez' and expects everyone to, I dunno, just send them money I guess? But even beyond the obviously-terrible examples, it's good to admit to oneself that, yes, there is a self-serving element to these friendships/interactions, but that as long as you give as good as you get, everybody wins.

    • @Musformation
      @Musformation  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Tha bitxhez is my jam. No but really good point

    • @jorgevallentine
      @jorgevallentine 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Totally. A friend of mine hates branding and marketing etc, but I think I’m getting through to him that all of it is just a tool. If you’re using it for good and providing people value and they then want to support you because of it, everyone wins. As long as you’re not setting out to use people and not give back, I think it’s a net positive.

    Yeah to your commentary about interacting in the "real world"!!! Yhew, my whole life in the business world was direct interaction, and I was good at it! So after hours of getting educated on the online nerd method of networking, having you spotlight direct interaction is a breath of fresh air. I mean, how the heck do you really build a "lifelong relationship" if you've never actually met that person?! Also, your comments about being genuine, helpful, and really caring about other people applies equally in virtual and real worlds. 100% the key to all things in marketing and life brother! Thanks for the words of wisdom.

    People always forget the value of human Interaction,. but some people say its the best wat to turn followers into fans,. They gotta get to know you anyways, start sooner than later.
    Again great advise man,. but on top of that your inspiring. Without the help and advice of certain people, some of us feel lost, not knowing where the next step is. Epically in Hip Hop, people don't really wanna share their secret sauce on how they get fans. So were grateful that these videos are out there.

And quite frankly if you don't go step-by-step and just follow his simple instructions and do the work, You're going to continue to fail to make the same mistakes you've always made. Just like I have!! I find myself filling out my spread sheet, As I am only in my early stages of building community, And going back to these 1st 2 videos and watching them again and again. I know Jesse talks fast, So simply stop every 5 or 10 seconds and rewind it. I have taken written down notes as I go. Create files and to do lists for yourself. Community building is exactly the advice I’ve been looking for.
    I’ll have to disagree with your views of Facebook ads. They’ve been the most effective thing I’ve done so far. It’s a PITA to figure out, but it *does* work. It got me about 80% of my followers, and a few of them ended up being true fans.
    That said, the community building approach is clearly superior.

    Can you do a video where you screen record yourself finding some of these communities? Like a video where you actually go and find a few examples of these online communities and interact with them etc. etc.. Also maybe follow this same format for some of the other topics you cover like social media posts. Maybe do a step-by-step video of you making a fictitious TikTok post or Reels Post etc etc.. Sometimes watching someone do it works better than listening to them talk about doing it. Especially for those who are visual learners. 🙏

    I'm on winter break and am devouring this stuff! There was some netflix doc about Alice in Chains' manager. Apparently he was all about spectacle. What do you think about that for smaller artists? You have to split your effort somewhere. It feels like that method v your method is gamble for something big vs regular work that pays off. It also seems like compared to the 70s, you have to do way crazier stuff now to get noticed, to the point where it's kind of destructive.

    • @Musformation
      @Musformation  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Spectacle is a huge thing I talk about in my videos on the 1975 and Billie eillish. But spectacle doesn’t always have to be destructive. Look at say Poppy or 100 Gecs that’s a lot of spectacle with no destruction just new ideas.

    • @Musformation

      Why put an hour of effort into something that can have life changing results? I think we waste our time for more in effectively regularly. As well the chances are way better than 0.5% of getting on a playlist and starting to build. Spotify claims 20% of songs submitted (since most don’t submit) get placed. Seems smart to me. But I talk plenty about what you can do that’s in your control but much of music is about the reception it has at large and none of us can control that.

    I guess I'm old. I had no idea there was such a thing as hyper pop. I make music that has a 90s hard rock vibe, which is seeeing a bit of comeback recently, so I am looking to release a library of recordings my budy and I did over the years, but never promoted or released. We are competent song writers and I am actually a good recording engineer, so I don't know why we left all those awesome songs (over 200) just sitting there. Part of it was just me focusing on other bands I was in over the years. This video was helpful. I'm no longer young enough to have dreams of super stardom, because ageism is a thing in this buisness. But now I know I don't need it. I just want to share the creativity with cool people. Also, we decided to create a fictional band, kind of like the gurillas but wierder. That's how I'm looking to release the music here soon. That seemed like a fun and easygoing way to release it not worry about looking like that sad old guy wanting to be a rockstar. lol This was a lot of great information. Thank you for sharing and being genuine about it.

    Jesse, is collaborating with other artists a MUST to blow up? I feel like time is constantly slipping between my fingers between trying to put together a marketing plan and finishing songs and connecting with my community-- it's a challenge to factor in collabs as well. Are they a must? If so, how often should we collab? Once a month or so?

    Hey Jesse, do you have any ideas for reconnecting to an audience after 1-2 years of lower activity? Let's say the audience was about 150-200K Spotify listeners a month at its peak. I'm wondering if there's any creative ways to retarget this audience if their info wasn't captured via mailing list or something like that.

      @@Musformation Jesse, ’ve just realised how horrible it is to pre save a song… Even if your Spotify is logged in on the app you have to log in and it just seems like not a really easy step for the user. I couldn’t even be bothered to do it myself as no one likes having to type in their email and password and click a few links understandably. I’m worried about pushing my fans to do shit they don’t want.
      My question: will I significantly harm my chances of getting on an editorial playlist if I don’t get any pre saves? I have a few thousands genuine spotify followers if that counts for anything and a 3:1 stream to listener rate.

I can't wait to see where it goes. I have a question btw, a lot of indie playlist curators ask for money to be placed. How legit are these playlisters and should indie artists play that game ? At least 70% of the people I contact ask me to pay 40 to 60 dollars to be on their playlist and I just don't know if I should do it. I don't think I've heard you talk about this but please direct me to a video if you've already mentioned this issue

As I´m looking at artists similar to me and my size, what if let´s say they are all artists that were using ads, and they gave up because their growth stagnated, and I keep tagging and playlisting these artists, do I teach the algorithm to target their audiences? Which, were not good quality audiences? And then, does that negatively affect me?

       I've been watching a lot of Jesse's videos the last day or so. To be honest I don't hear any anything political that's off-topic. That he talks in political terms is part and parcel of having a deep understanding of business relationships which are all about the politics of human relationships in organizations and communities, i.e., understanding a context, the power structures, the subtexts, etc.

    Hey, Jesse, thanks for your videos, they have been a great help and source of motivation. I want to ask you, is having a Twitter account absolutely necessary? What benefits and strategies can you share? I am not really keen on social media, but I've started using Instagram and Facebook to share my music, and am already seeing positive results.
    I'm kind of reluctant to create a new Twitter account as I already had one that I created in 2008 and maintained until about 2018; I regularly used this as a sort of writing doodle page, sharing my work as a writer, and had a considerable following. But in 2019, I deactivated it and didn't know it would be permanently deleted if I didn't log back in within a month, so that's gone.
    I'm fine with it really, but that account kind of matched the vibe and persona that I want to keep around my music and channel, so I'm just thinking that it would be a hassle to start from scratch again, especially since I don't get a lot of time off from my regular life and work, and any time I get, I use to record music.
    Can you share in a video, or maybe if you already have one on the topic of how to use Twitter to establish a fan base, redirect me to it?
    Incidentally, should I make a Facebook page, too, or are those passé? I'm ignorant of these things now as, like I said, I haven't been in social media in a long time. But sharing my videos on my old Facebook account has already helped too and I'm willing to explore more of the potential of social media marketing, I just need to be precise about it as I simply don't have the time to devote to resarch and trial-and-error.
    Thanks in advance and have a great day.
    M.J.
