    👇 ABOUT ME:
Hey! I’m Damian Keyes and I've worked with musicians every day of my life for the past 20 years. The internet is de ply untrusting understandably and here is my background so you can have the full picture.
When I was 18, I was signed to a major label and at 23 I co-founded a Music University in Europe called BIMM (valued at $300M). I’m also a bass player, I’ve played for a number of artists including Eric Clapton, Alanis Morrisette and Billy Cobham. I initially retired at 30, but realised that life gets boring if you’re not building!
I have always been in-between the music industry and education which is how I ended up building my TH-cam channel - I’ve been teaching artists how to release music long before it was a ‘niche’! I now educate artists around the world with my Academy, TH-cam channel and Social Agency.
It’s great to meet you and looking forward to working together on your music!

How has it gone in the past year? When you made the I think 60 second required Tik Tok video did you have to do a comical take as it seems you must in order to get attention? I mean do a crazy dance as you sing etc or can you just simply sing? I don't have a band, just myself and guitar and sometimes harmonica too, and piano. I just went to your channel and can't find any of your songs but a lot of vocal training videos. You aren't really a songwriter and performing original songs so the Tik Tok video you created was to attract people into your baritone vocalist lessons? How have Damian's techniques worked for you?

Greta job man, breaking down the process here. Sooo many people have no idea how to do this, and its VERY important now in the post-record label age. Labels did everything for us before, (unfortunately,) and now we need t learn to do it all ourselves. Production no longer costs a ridiculous amount, advertisement doesn't either, booking isn't very hard either. But if you have no clue how to even start, then you will never get there. I really feel like most people just need a starting point and a tiny bit of guidance, just to get them running in the right direction, then If they're dedicated they'll run it the rest of the way. For years I've been looking for the insight that's in this channel, so really, thanks dude you're a credit to the industry!

I do think though that people now a days see (as you say) so much content in a day … I think at the end of the day they don’t even remember what they’ve seen ! As evil as the music industry has been throughout the years and we all know by now , they had a structure of how to get out to the public with the ‘actual big artists’ from the past as we know them ! I think those days are over of that kind of stardom… maybe I’m wrong but… time will tell…

It defo helps in the same way as talent also stops people from scrolling. I guess we live in a time where we have to use whatever we have got in order to grab attention and if that is looks, talent, songwriting, consistency, production quality or story telling then we need to go all in!

Great video, but how could I manipulate this for a DJ to get more followers?

    • @DamianKeyes

@@DamianKeyes I agree. I watch so many DJs on TT and YT, and there's nothing more boring than watching a DJ work 🤣. I've purchased a graphics visual program with over 9800 videos that I can program to the BPM. I think these visuals intercut with me give the viewer another level. Over a 1 hour mix it's gotta be better than watching a DJ mix?!

Thanks, Damien, for your content and help for artists in these crazy times of social media and mass digital content. Your strategies to increase social media presence and create a fanbase make perfect sense. But I have a serious question.
How is a fanbase and media view count converted into career success? For example spotify streaming income is hardly worth having for a smaller act with moderate success. Is all the time and energy spent creating content and a fanbase really bankable or just an exercise in narcisism? Is success now measured by view count alone? You show many examples where that is the only measure. These artists show off great talent and have thousands of “fans”for sure. But when click of a button equals being a fan, does this even mean anything? where is the pay off? I don’t understand how content popularity is converted into bank balance or success in the real world. It’s the platforms that are making the real dosh as far as i can see. The artistic content has been relegated to disposable click media. Some of it very good but ultimately serving the platform owners. Free content for these huge multi billion $$$ companies. Im not being nihilistic or negative I obviously see some benefit in creating an online fanbase and presence for getting shows and opportunities etc but at what point can it actually generate income? Or should it purely be viewed as a promotional activity? I’m genuinely interested to hear your views on how artists can benefit and monetise, Damien as you seem to know your stuff. Cheers

"The artistic content has been relegated to disposable click media. Some of it very good but ultimately serving the platform owners." That is precisely what has happened.

what about using this as a starting point to build an email list, maybe having followers share their contact info to download the whole track they hear in those 30 second music videos??
then we have their email adress and we know they are interested about our music so we can try to sell them stuff like paid downloads, tickets or merch?

I’ve just done my day 1 of this strategy, positing a mini music video as my first TH-cam short! 😬 I’m a brand new indie artist with my debut single set for release on 16th Feb, so I’m going to follow this plan alongside the 23 day release plan, and see what sort of engagement I can get starting from scratch! Wish me luck!

Does this work for 62 year old dudes? I have over 100 you tube videos and 50 original tunes, mostly instrumentals posted. I had a couple vocal numbers, but they never caught on, so I don't generally push them. I had a few "hits" 10 years ago and have 1800+ subscribers, but almost 0 engagement. I've been positing a a lot of shorts lately, and got some good response initially, with 30 new subs, but very few follow through and 0 comments. I was getting average 200 to 300 views per short, but I tried an experiment where I posted four in a row, 1 hour apart, and the first two did over 300, then video three and four dropped to less than 40 views. Ever since then, I get average of 50 views per short. I feel like youtube changed the algorithm, or purposely trying to discourage me from releasing new videos.

      Hey Stevero,
Great to hear from you. The algorithm is trying to serve up the most clickable content so thumbnails and titles have become more important as the likes of Mr Beast etc push people towards even heavier sensationalism so my suggestion is work on TikTok and TH-cam thumbnails and create origami ideas to bring people in before they see you and your music 😊😊

    • @stevero77
      @stevero77 ปีที่แล้ว

@@DamianKeyes Thanks for your advice. I understand what they want, and I actually did "improve" some numbers on later videos, with a higher click rate then previous videos, but less feed, and therefore, less views, so I feel they must be shooting for extreme click rates. The best click rate I got was 45% with 1400 views, but later vids with a similar click rate get largely ignored. The risk is a sensational thumb that doesn't match the content gets large dislike and short play time. I do have a cover on a Pink Floyd song, and it does get more attention, so definitely agree that covers do help.
