  • Music Marketer Jesse Cannon addresses common complaints about outdated music marketing techniques by introducing new methods that help artists achieve significant streaming numbers from their very first song. Including the importance of diversifying social media presence across various platforms, utilizing TikTok for growth despite misconceptions about its future, and how leveraging emotional alignment in content can amplify music promotion. Highlighting Good Neighbors' success with their single and their TikTok strategy, the script offers practical advice on content repetition, emotional engagement, and the significance of cross-platform presence for maximizing music exposure. Additionally, it touches upon the decline of Twitter and the rising potential of Threads, emphasizing the need for adaptability in digital music marketing strategies.

    Great video my lord. The captioned picture concept does seem to be super effective if you line up the right imagery and song vibes, and takes such little effort compared to a lot of other content creation. I've had clips from music videos that took me a while to create going nowhere with views, but then posting a few pictures from the Blade movie to a song I have that is very vampire-orgy vibes gets way more traction on views/likes/interaction, and took me like 5 minutes to create. This is coming from someone who has 38 TikTok followers tho lol

      From my observations and implementations, each successive video I upload using Jesse’s method (album vid, lyric vid, other) has enhanced my TH-cam views and engagement considerably.
      You both are correct. These methods work, but one also has to build an audience.
      If you don’t have money, it’s crockpot cooking. The algo’s are all based on time spent. They are super simple. They also know they are effed without a continual stream of content. So, they reward time watched AND consistency. A creator who continues to post is more likely to improve and build a loyal fanbase similar to radio stations continuously broadcasting. The algos capitalize on this inevitability.
      If you have money, you can push anything big very fast.
      SEO also played a role in this whole thing. Google loves longevity over all else. When you consistently and congruently tie together all of your artistry, you will win in the long run.
      Also, people need to stop looking at Spotify as the means to make a living. Instead, look at it as a normally expensive service that delivers crazy insightful data on your fanbase which informs your marketing efforts across the board. Take your data and attention, and build sales funnels to have people invest in your merch and ticketed experiences.
      CharlinXCX very brilliantly pointed out on a TikTok (subway interviews) that the successful artists build a world people can enter. She went as far as saying the music doesn’t matter (i disagree with the statement, but agree with the intent).
      Shift your focus from outcomes to enjoying the journey. Have the big dream, then surrender it so you can fall in love with the process.

  • @Soltheking

    Thanks for this video - this tracks. I watched an artist named Berlioz do something very similar with his music. He started going viral consistently on Reels & TikTok when he posted his music behind found footage, old movies, and cartoons - emphasizing different moods and witty captions. This can work when you find similar content and visuals that speak to the mood of your music. I'd approach this by testing 10-20 different pieces of content like this within a week and build on a few winners, rinse and repeat. It's work, but as you explained, improving on what works could unlock a pathway to building your audience for your music.

    Jesse, awesome video as always. But I have to issues with the example of Good Neighbours:
    1. Their first Tiktok is on 07/2023 promoting their song “keep it up”, which didn’t come out until 04/2024. Why so long between release and advertising? The first TikTok they made promoting their song “Home” was on 01/09/24, only 1 week before it’s release on Spotify. What do you make of this?
    2. They have moderate success on TikTok, but their Spotify numbers are CRAZY (sitting at 15M monthly listeners). I don’t think Tik Tok alone can explain these numbers. What else do you think it is?

    • @Musformation
      @Musformation  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah one of the things to remember is a lot of musicians don’t do smart things. Posting songs they haven’t finished is commonplace. Who knows what they did here 2. The algorithm a lot of plays and repeated listens. Very regular stuff that drives streams TBH.

    Hey Jesse, in all honesty does streaming even matter anymore? Can we get strategic advice on something more tangible like promoting, marketing, and selling Vinyl and cassettes, both of which are outselling digital? Streaming platforms just seem lame…

    • @Musformation
      @Musformation  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      I have to tell you, streaming has always been outsold by cassettes and vinyl because streaming doesn’t sell it’s consumption and if you think more people are consuming vinyl and cassettes than streaming I don’t know what you are smoking? Streaming is where fan bases are built and if you don’t get streams you’re not selling vinyl or casettes

    • @river718
      @river718 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@Musformation I said Vinyl and cassettes are outselling digital, (which is a business fact) not streaming. Digital files are still selling at Apple, Amazon, and other digital outlets.
      I also opinined that streaming platforms are just lame, they don't pay us artists and somehow CEO's like Spotify's Daneil Ek gets richer every year despite Spotify never turning over a profit or paying artists enough per stream.
      Why would any artist in their right business mind allow these streaming platforms to benefit off our music when we could sell direct to consumer?
      So without personalizing it, can you make a video providing solid strategies for promoting, marketing, and selling Vinyl and casettes?

    • @Musformation
      @Musformation  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      @river718 I think we’re talking past each other. The problem with the way you’re reading the data is you are doing apples and oranges. Streaming is consumption now. Radio was consumption twenty years ago in the years people sold it. I’ve made plenty of videos on upselling but the second you do what you’re doing a call this lame it’s doing a utopian scenario you or I have no control of. I’m a strategist so I make strategies that work in a climate I can control. The fact is if you boost consumption you can easily upsell to vinyl and digital. I never push digital sales because they happen automatically with consumption.

    • @river718
      @river718 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@Musformation Do you not see the strong disadvantage for artists with streaming?
      If the streaming platforms aren't paying us artists for using our music on their platforms, then how does that make any business sense?
      At least with Vinyl and cassettes us artists can see some kind of return on our investment in ourselves?
      the music instruments and gear we record our music with costs money. Proper mastering costs money. Good graphic design and music video production costs money.
      Streaming platforms are doing whatever they can get away with to not pay artists money.
      Distributors like Distrokid and Tunecore are currently being called out for using false accusaations of artists using bot schemes as an excuse to not pay artists our money.
      Come on man streaming is just lame.
      At least with direct sales of our physical media us artists can get our money from the fans rather than go through these streaming middlemen who are stealing from us artists...

      @@river718Jesse is saying that selling physical is a byproduct of promoting your brand on streaming, and promoting people directly to the physical product simply wont work. Much like how a single is the sample for the album, the streaming is the sample for the physical product (whether that be music like vinyl or a brand connected to your music like clothing). Sure, DSPs are greedy and the artist suffers, but that doesn’t change the fact that its a necessary part of becoming a full time musician.

I called my friend there and it was indie at first but they got picked up in the last few weeks but the momentum was there from the indie days. It’s easy to see the change in the video as it was indie and now the label credit is different. This is quite common and I was looking every few days to see how fast it’d happen.
