Studio C’s James Perry: How I Stumbled On A Purpose | James Perry | TEDxBYU

  • James Perry made the decision to become an engineer thinking he could pursue a career that would be useful to the world. Instead, he ended up becoming a main cast member on BYUtv’s popular original series, Studio C--a sketch-comedy show that has over 1 million subscribers and 600 million views. While the drastic career change was certainly unexpected, what surprised James most was discovering that doing something that was important to him gave him more purpose than doing something he assumed was important to the world.
James was born and raised in Sacramento, CA in a family of seven. As the middle child, he was starved for attention so naturally took to acting. In college, he stretched his acting and writing skills by joining a sketch comedy troupe, Divine Comedy. He graduated with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from BYU in 2013. After working as a Software Engineer for a little over a year, while doing Studio C part-time, the show grew and he became a full-time actor and writer. James married his high school sweetheart, Brenna. They love traveling and finding good food. When he isn't acting, James loves tending (or eating) his organic vegetable garden and playing with their puppy, Caesar.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

EndlessSky Jason bet that the Hunger Games Parody would get a million views before Scott Sterling. Jason Said if he won he would get to get what he wanted to the cast to get revenge on all the times he got hurt on the show. Well, Scott Sterling hit 1 million first so the tables were turned and they did what they wanted to Jason, hit him with soccer balls. That's how Matt's revenge came to be.

So wise, James (and apparently Brenna). I've found this to be true for me as well. I struggled for years to find my purpose. When I finally thought I found it, I settled in for the long haul, but then rude awakenings made me reconsider, and I'm back in school, pursuing something that is completely different from anything I had been considering! It's quite remarkable how your purpose can change so dtrastically, and yet, for the better!

I want to change the world for the better. The problem I've run into is that I feel stuck where I am trying to learn enough to be able to do anything worthwhile.
I have to push through and get my degree, then ... I'll get to go places. I just want to get into a firm to join a team of people to make the world better. There is no try." But this verse is heavy on the value of trying and continuing to get up and try again and not give up.
