In this video, I show how to replace the PCIe SSD inside my 2017 Dell XPS 13 (model 9360). I put in a new 500 GB WD Blue SSD, replacing a Hynix 120 GB SSD that the laptop came with.

Finally got around to changing out the SSD in my 9360, thanks for the great guide, certainly made it painless.

Thanks for the video. Notice however, that the 2018 XPS 13 (at least the developer edition) has two differences. First, it doesn't have the screw in the middle of the case, and second the SSD does not pop up when you remove the little screw. Actually, it's glued with a very weak and gummy glue, so you need to gently pry it up with a fingernail, or something.

Somehow one screw inside mine got lose (the one that holds the charging port). Thanks for the hints how to get into it without breaking anything !

I have an XPS 13 9360 and when I power it on it and ctrl+p f12 and it's set to UEFI and secure boot that gets me to a Linux Mint 18 cinnamon 64 bit which then runs and ends up saying have up waiting for root device. Alert! /dev/mapper/mint--bg-root does not exist. Dropping to a shell!

Yep! Still using it for my Windows testing and some light gaming to this day! It is a pretty good laptop, the best Windows-based laptop I've used. I still hate the placement of the webcam though, but newer models don't have that "up nose" problem anymore.
What are compatible Hard Drives for the 9350?
The two front screws metal became rounded when I tried to unscrew them, so now it's impossible to open :/

Good question. I'd have thought that, in cloning the original SSD, everything (including the original Windows) gets ported over, no?

Nope, just a standard Torx head.
I just purchaed an XPS 13 7390. It's a bit different, I can't see the SSD or the memory card. I run Linux so cloning the inferior Redmen OS is not important. Anybody know of a video that shows how to get to the SSD and memory of the 7390?
How do you clone your old SSD in order to use the new one? Is there a usb device needed or just an online website to back it up? Thanks!

best to use a desktop to do it I think you can use an M.2 to USB 3,0 enclosure and basically turn it into a usb drive and use the software to copy everything over

Unfortunately no, all XPS pc's come with the ram soldered onto the motherboard.

Not sure about the 2018 model (but I presume so, if the hardware is similar); but memory cannot be upgraded, as it's soldered in.
Memory is soldered into the 2018 model and thus cannot be changed.

Is it worth it to buy the XPS with the smallest SSD, clone the contents, and upgrade to 1TB SSD on your own ?
It's probably more cost effective than buying one already installed from Dell.

No. The ram is soldered to the motherboard and therefore is not user replaceable.

YES, The NVMe installed by default is already a 2280

Pry tool, can be found in ifixit bundles or you can use a plastic knife or something of the such

Yes, at least on the older 9360 I7-7500U. You can see it in the video on the top left corner.

I changed the SSD but now the laptop wont power back on, even after putting back the original SSD. I see two amber and 5 white LED lights. Please help!
Were you able to get it back on? Hopefully it wasnt b/c of a short circuit
I don’t recommend upgrading this system. I upgraded my SSD, but it caused a bit of damage opening it. The T5 skrews are very easy to strip. The board flexes a lot when prying it to open and the lid is very tight. I ended up warping a corner where my battery button is which ended up wrecking the device. I wish I had known that this device wasn’t as repair friendly

@@karmicselling4252 my laptop is just heating up on a lot, all my cpu cores run at 99 degrees, I don't know is this normal for XPS 13 9360. need advice.
You are far more likely to break the plastic connector than the fiberglass tabs on the PCB...
