      I had to replace a dead fan in my HP laptop, so used the opportunity to install a 1TB SSD, upgrade to a faster processor, install more RAM, and add bluetooth. Used Acronis True Image instead of his MiniTool Partition Wizard. Everything went smoothly, mainly because I was very careful in selecting the correct processor and bluetooth board. RAM did nothing, so went back to original 8g.

      I hate the geeks and gamer kids that have mastered the computer languages and try to give directions while assuming that everyone can understand what they are trying to tell us.

  • @normanpettit
    @normanpettit 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    One difference I ran into was that my SSD was new from the manufacturer and came un-formatted. The PC wouldn't even recognize that there was a device attached via USB which gave me pause. I proceeded with the the manufacturer-provided disc-cloning software (rather than the one mentioned in this video) and it recognized the new SSD and formatted it before proceeding. Everything went smoothly from there. These directions are very helpful for those not quite sure of the process. My laptop is now unbelievably faster. Anyone struggling with a slow PC should really consider this upgrade.

    I already upgrade my 10yr old dual core laptop into windows10. It slow, have delays everytime and sometimes its hanging when doing multi tab search on chrome or ms edge.
    So I upgraded the ram to its maximum , from 2gb to 8gb, what can i say its very fast now no delay no freeze or hanging. But because my 320gb hard drive is nearly full, well i need to upgrade now and I found this steps so instead of hard drive, I will buying SSD instead.

    This was a bit fiddly, maybe partially because I was trying to replace an HDD that which I suspect had problems.
    To get MiniTool Partition Tool to run, I had to:
    1. Scan my old disk, and repair. The MiniTool choked on my HDD the first few times, until I cleaned it up.
    2. Have to shut off EVERYTHING else that's running while MiniTool does the migration. That's not just closing apps that are obviously open. I had to use Windows Task Manager to kill a bunch of programs running in the background (e.g., McAfee security, various others). Otherwise the MiniTool would stop, and it did NOT proceed after a restart (as the pop-up indicated it would).
    Since it took about 8 hours to run each time (before hanging), it took several days overall to get my HDD migrated. But eventually it worked, and my new drive runs fine, w/o loss of data.
    Suggestion: If you have a way, you might want to backup all your data on the old drive to a network drive, and then delete it from your old drive. By minimizing the total size of data to be migrating, the MiniTool app runs a lot faster. Then you can restore your data from the network drive onto the new disk. For my system, it was faster to move data off the old HDD to Network Attached Storage, and then restore it later, rather than have MiniTool transfer all the data itself. And you get a backup of your data anyway, just in case something goes wrong.

    Great step by step, the only thing I have encountered in which you didn’t cover is that the partition magic or any other softwares, they will not allow migrating OS from a smaller drive to a larger SSD drive! Stating unequal number of sectors in drives will not allow the migration. I tried four different s/w online and other tricks such as making a exact partition as the source drive but they still saw the larger SSD drive.

    Sometimes it doesn't go this smoothly. I tried cloning the HDD of an older laptop (circa 2014) onto an SSD. The software appeared to work properly, but the laptop simply wouldn't boot from that drive no matter what I tried. I finally gave up and performed a fresh Windows install onto the SSD. The cable gave me access to all the data on the original drive, so I didn't technically 'lose' anything, though I'm still left with the task of reinstalling and setting up all the various programs I had on the original drive. I'm still glad I did it though, as the laptop was so slow that I had basically stopped using it. Now with the SSD and double the original RAM, it's become a usable machine again.

    Just tried it - don't bother with the MiniTool Partition Wizard! Now it doesn't support the migration in the free version, and even if you choose not to install their bloatware, you still end up with a tool that doesn't migrate your OS unless you buy the Pro version, and you also get Avast Anitivirus, MiniTool backup and whatnot installed, so you need to clean up your OS after this.

      @@smokingstan2501 , Your welcome. I just did the migration for my own laptop to a new Samsung Pro 860 SSD, and just used the tool (Samsung Data Migration Tool) they provide from their website. Looks a bit dodgy, but gets the job done and works fine, including using the whole space (they state that it only works from same- to larger size disk) - all with defaults settings. Win10 activation code and all was still intact, so looks like M$ doesn't tie it to the HD serial anymore.

    If you're laptop came with an HDD it probably came with W7 or W8 originally so you're now surely on a W10 upgrade and in 2021 W10 as been updated many times so I suggest to do a clean install of W10 latest version on your new SSD so to get rid of all the excess updates files left by previous upgrade. This was will take longer and give you more work (back-up personal files and reinstall apps and programs) but it will help you get an even faster SSD performance so a better laptop performance.
