  • I use the Dell XPS 15 9570 for editing 4K video, but 6 months after launch it's due an upgrade. I'm adding 32GB RAM, 1TB SSD & a new Wi-Fi chip - but will it make a big difference?

    Hi Chaps! Thanks for all your comments - Quick update:
    1) If you're doing this upgrade, you could go for the newer Intel 9260 Wi-Fi card (faster, BT 5.), I already had a 8265 laying around so I wanted to keep costs down (and still improve my Wi-fi reliability)
    2) Some of you are saying I re-connected the black/white antenna wires incorrectly on the Wi-Fi chip, in fact the Killer card required them to be the opposite way around compared to the Intel. Which is why I reconnected them in a different way.
    3) Be very, VERY careful with the two phillips-head screws under the flap. They are extremely soft and easy to thread.
    4) You can unplug the battery before doing upgrades if you need to, better to be safe than sorry, but it's not absolutely necessary.
    5) Here's a link for the wallpaper: imgur.com/gallery/Ytp5l
    Hope you enjoyed the video! Cheers :)

    I just want to say how happy it makes me to see a TH-camr who does 4K video editing who isn't using a Mac. It's not that I don't have an issue with Macs - but the sheer unity of video edit types who simply assume "Video editing? You need a Mac!' is so frustrating. Nice to see someone doing the same thing with a Windows 10 system.

    It's a small detail but it's really cool that you showed the ENTIRE process, including after installing the new SSD. Most youtube videos don't show that part. I haven't used Windows in a while, and reinstalling Windows 7 on my old Alienware desktop was NOT that easy after I replaced the mechanical hard drive with a 2.5" old school SSD. It's nice to see that if I actually opt for a new windows laptop for my daughter or something (since most schools use windows), it will be easy to upgrade the machine. TU for the helpful video.

    Tip for those looking to install a traditional SSD into their laptops (possible for m.2 nvme SSD as well, but potentially more finicky) connect your SSD up to your desktop PC (If you have one) and use macrium reflect to copy the contents of your desktops storage onto the new drive, then install the drivers for your laptop into your new SSD and delete anything not needed on it. Then install into laptop with a ready to go SSD, with the same setup as your desktop PC !

    • @prringa6099
      @prringa6099 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    • @nadtz
      @nadtz 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I cant imagine how many laptops I've tinkered inside of, once the trend towards internal batteries became a thing I stopped caring about unplugging them and I (nor anyone I work with) has ever had a safety issue. Ok I'm being a little glib there but honestly if you are just swapping cards and you fry something something else is wrong with the system as that should not happen. Some laptops let you access memory/ssd without even opening the laptop in which case you would have to take the whole thing apart to do what you are talking about to perform what would otherwise be a 3 minute upgrade.

    • @prringa6099
      @prringa6099 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@nadtz Exactly. The a plugged in battery normally can't cause any issues. What can cause issues, however, is static charge of your own body. That can sometimes end badly.

    For more advanced users: if you want to use hardware encryption on Samsung, you have to magically enable it *before* installing OS, effectively, running it through Samsung Magician on other already installed PC :> Screws are too soft, so proceed carefully. Some people re-paste CPUs with better paste, undervolt CPU while at it and put additonal cooling pads on SSD, power transistors. Fan cleaning isn't bad idea either.

    With any upgrade like this, once you take the back off, take a photo, for 2 reasons, if you make an error you can see how the connections were when you took the back off.
    Second reason take a photo after you have finished the upgrade and rename the photo file something like "Dell XPS 9570 upgrade" so you can search and find it again then a year or 2 later you can see what upgrades you did or didn't do as sometimes you may forget what you did.

Up to now I tried everything, from uninstalling the device, installing all the drivers from Dell site etc and I finally ended up not seeing the webcam in device manager AT ALL. Now imagine doing all these radical upgrades... I may end up not having a laptop AT ALL I am sure the upgrade is not so easy as you make it look. PS The webcam problem remains unsolved. Dell support assist replied and gave me an assist number. Still waiting.

    Did you backup whole disk ( SSD ) using some third party software?
    Or did you just backup your data via copy & pasting to an external usb drive or to cloud?

    Hey man, love your work as usual. Couple Questions: #1. Can I upgrade the ram to a 64GB DD4? #2. Ive been hearing "thermal throttling" is a big issue with some of the units produced, if I got one and ran into that, is there a way around it that you suggest i go about on approaching? #3. Is there a better Wifi card than the intel that I can replace? Really looking forward to your reply, i'm days away from buying one but your feedback is crucial to my decision.
    UPDATE: Terribly sorry, final question. can I replace the battery with a much longer duration battery from a Chinese manufacturer from Amazon/Ebay?

    Interested in your thoughts. I’m thinking of buying the XPS 15 with 8GB ram and 256GB SSD...however I’d like to upgrade to the 16GB version of the ram and 500 GB SSD that you have in this video. Will come in $50 under the current retail version of Dells 16/500 model. Would you recommend going this route?

    Can you please make a proper video on how you installed windows after replacing everything

      Its fairly easy, There are 2 options -
      1)after installing an ssd plugin a usb drive with windows on it, and then open up the boot menu and select your usb boot device and then select the drive you want to install it on after that the screen will turn black, thats when you need to unplug the usb, then the windows install is really easy.
      2)You can use a program like Macrium Reflect or Samsung's other option to clone the drive, you will need your old drive and a new drive as well .......you can look it up on TH-cam.
      hope it helped

    i just upgraded with the crucial 64gb kit, worked fine after second try. first try the ram was not "detected", so i did the good old "have you tried turning it off and on again" (in this case taking the ram out and putting it back in again) and it worked ;-)

    Hello, very good video. I have a question regarding SSD: would the Samsung 970 EVO Plus be a better option? My question is because some customers have reported that despite having better performance, reaches a higher temperature as well.

    Hi Tom! your videos are super cool, keep it coming.
    Can the removed ssd be used as an external drive with some sort of adapter? I searched in amazon, i am not able to find a PCIe based adapter, only SATA is available.

    I noticed how careful you are when you open the lid, you also hold it on the sides not in the middle. Have you noticed that the touch screen glass moves forward on top of the lid if you hold the lid in the middle while opening. Of course you must not press against the touch screen while opening, basically the finger only has to touch the plastic cover. Dell changed once the whole display for me because of that under warranty. In my case the glass moved forward by 1-2 mm. The whole display is so thin that it bends under the resistance of hinges.

    Great video. I'm don't know much about computers but do you have to reinstall all the programs you had before? Does the windows iso image also saves all the programs you had before? Thanks for clarifying

    Great vid. I always try to buy lowest spec model & upgrade myself; as I know what I'm putting in. Getting a spec'd out model from get go.....ya just never know what getting for internals until buy & open it up. Sometimes is a good deal, but mostly you lose out with mid tier hardware at best. Just something I've noticed over the years, & is the number one thing I do for customers(upgrade the ram, storage, wifi, etc....).
    Cheers, A
