Sailing Safar Ep6 -Sailing to the Mediterranean.

- In this episode, I depart Gibraltar and voyage into the Mediterranean . After a lovely week in Gibraltar, I'm itching to get to sea again, even if it is only a short hop up the coast.

Another good video, your drone shots have inspired me to get my act together and get my drone up round the boat. I've been practicing at home on windy days 😀Hope it all continues to go well in the Med.

@@sailingsafar I'm reasonably happy about plucking the drone from the sky, It's a Phantom 3, so it's got the leggy things to grab hold of and I do tend to fly it to my hand rather than land it on the ground. No it's just the normal fear of losing it. However I have just bought a s/h CrystalSky tablet, it's really bright so I should be able to see the output from the camera, even if it's sunny. The Samsung tablet I was using is hopeless in the summer, just not bright enough. I'm off down to the boat in a couple of days, weather permitting I'll bite the bullet and have a go out in the Solent.

I can definitely talk about costs to, but I find the vary a lot, but it will give you a rough guide of what my expenses are when cruising.

There are quite a few interesting National sailing traits. A Brit will sail at 90% preparedness and think he's taking chances. A frenchman will sail at 50% and wonder what the problem is!? You're finding out, through vhf and other protocols, just how varied and wonderful life afloat is. Keen to follow your journey. What's dictating your plans?
I’m very fortunate that Safar is such a capable boat and I’ll certainly try and do her proud.
I’m afraid to say work (money) is currently dictating my plans, as I’ll need to return next week to fund the next Safar adventures. I’m hoping, like many others that if the channel takes off it might allow me to be a little more flexible with my time off
Make an adapter for your 32 to 16 amp sockets, saves all the re wiring.
That 16A female socket needed for an adapter is certainly top of my chandlery list that’s for sure! All this fuss rewiring isn’t worth the hassle.

Don't mind the camera. A sailor sailing the seas don't bother about things like these (fenders hanging on the pushpit) as long as they are not in the way. If I sail for a couple of hours I leave them on the deck. If more hours, I will hang them like you do. Besides, on my little 28 foot I don't have the luxury to have them down below and I actually DON'T want them down below. Thanks for the video

When ever I’ve been in particularly busy commercial waters, you’ll often hear lots of racist slurs between the various nationalities over the radio, I believe it’s usually deck crew with hand held radios…. But it does make you wonder…. What exactly are they hoping to achieve?!

Watched this on a big screen. I love the film of Safar taken with the drone. If anything sums up my love of sailing it’s watching a yacht cruising along from a drone! Beautiful! The quality of picture is perfection. Even descending to turn the whistling kettle off, the colours of the interior are exquisite. Well done! ⛵️

Safar so good. Glad you mention the fenders. Ok on the stern but I see so many videos with them just flipped over on the deck. There are enough tripping hazards on a boat without that.
Yep completely agree, I hate the idea of anything being on deck that isn’t supposed to be, extra windage, something else for waves to carry away and additional trip hazards as you mentioned, I let it slide this time as it was only a 20nm passage in light winds, but after reviewing the footage I’ll make sure I pack them away in future so I’ve got those beautiful Safar clean lines again 😅

Liking the channel - nice clear, honest & simple sharing of experiences & experience. Don’t change that bit. And yeah keep up the discipline of putting fenders away - my late Dad would have definitely cocked a disapproving eyebrow at that festoonery off the stern😉. He drummed that, and many other ‘just so’ bits of boat management & husbandry into me from a very early age … A very pretty and well sorted out boat, being run well. Yep like it 👍

I was very impressed with how high she did point once I changed the lead of the sheets, now wondering if I could’ve got across Biscay a little quicker had I changed it previously!

It made me wonder someone might come up with a remote engine throttle so one can do the lines and control the engine away from the cockpit for docking and mooring. They have done it for cranes and hoist, so it is definitely possible.
Certainly on Motorboats it’s a thing, I used to work for a company called “Cockwells” in the UK, and we were fitting that technology to the motor launches at the time, They have a video on TH-cam of them using it, th-cam.com/video/oROJcLVSJAc/w-d-xo.html
it’s a bit of a gimmick but could be very helpful when Mediterranean mooring alon.

Great video … what’s the reason for not mooring stern to, easier singlehanded to moor bow in?
Really glad you enjoyed this one, I guess I have two main reasons really. With Safar being a big long keel, she has almost no Manoeuvrability when going a stern, and I also have a very fragile Aires wind vane on the Stern which would really limit my ability to climb across if I was stern to, Hope that helps

hi there, I was wondering what app you are using on the iPad for navigation?
I use Navionics on the iPad, I honestly find it so much more user friendly than the Raymarine chart plotter. So whenever I’m planning a route or navigating tricky areas the IPad is always my primary system, Hope this helps

If you want a haul out head to almerimar, the yard is ok , and you can work on your own boat if you want , alot of marinas don't allow this , you have to use there guys at a mark up, after that the coastline gets more interesting .
Thanks David! Almerimar was top of my list, but unfortunately their yard service team are fully booked and they couldn’t squeeze me in until April, I was hoping to get Safar’s hull blasted so I’m currently looking for alternative places.

@@davidwarnes5158 I’m hoping for Wet / Slurry blasting. Safar has 10+ years of thick flaky antifouling that needs removing and I think I’ll go for copper coat after, But I want to make sure it’s an experienced yard that do it to avoid problems 😅
@@sailingsafar should have done it in the UK, its very much the yes we dwn do anything attitude in the med . Just my view with experience,
Or contact copperplate uk , and ask who they would use , and once you move on , hard to get it sorted with any issues ,
