I found on bigger cats putting in a reef flattens the sail enough to be able to let the main sheet out more , dropping the sail helps keeping the sail off the streaders when running down wind . Opening the wind age of the sails more. Wnd sadly they now put a jib instead of a over lapping genoa . Or chappy self tacking .
Yeah good tip. As the main is so roachy the top does tend to flair out even when the mainsheet is tight. I should have been running the screecher I those winds but how its currently set up its very difficult to furl/recover alone.
@@davidwarnes5158 I have an aso in a sock but that’s another ball game alone. I don’t really need a pole on the cat, the boat is wide enough that I can barberhaul the jib way out
Awesome to see you visit my stomping ground. Batemans Bay is the whole Bay - from about Lilli Pilli to the South, up to North Head and then all the way upstream to the new bridge. You had excellent conditions. That bar has claimed a few boats in its time - usually stink boats trying to surf in. It's a rolly place to stay overnight!
Thanks for the info! Yeah I guess any east swell is going to roll straight in there. We tied up to the public potion for the night but it wasn't a very comfortable place, the current rips down there.
Vernon, It seems like Cats versus monohull isn’t as pure/fun of a sailing adventure. All of life is a trade off, and there’s no doubt the cat is more comfortable and livable at dock. But there is nothing better than a mono when the sails are just so, and you barely have to touch the wheel. I’ve chartered a couple of high end cats and have a simple Catalina 315 monohull at home. I’d love your honest comparison.
Love to see the solo sailing videos, the first video I came across of you was: Solo Sailing, A day in my life-Sailing Papua. Been following you ever since I saw that video yet it is still one of my favorite sailing videos I have seen.

good dvd for those with no experience and not sure if want a mono or multi - I have had both over the year's.. Big fan of mono's with rudder on the stern, not through hull and lift keel's/centreboard's
Hi Vernon. Just watched your first solo. 👍👍 When running, a friend of mine fitted snatch turning blocks to the top of his dagger boards to achieve a wider sail angle and it works well, he adjusts the height of the board to get the desired sail shape. I use a spinnaker pole which works well most of the time. Beware of your main if the wind is building when you are running, all hell can break loose while turning into the wind to reef or drop it. Feef it early. Just saying. 😁 Fair weather and fine friends to you and Marie. ⚓
Wow, never heard of anyone doing that before. Dagger boards are designed for strength in only the direction needed, seems like that might be loading them in a way they are not designed for. I'll ask around about that one before trying it.
I solo sail most of the time. Ok monohull not a cat, but I love it. Being out alone is the most wonderful feeling in the world. That said, there of course is the constant risk since you’re the only person there to save yourself, so extra thought must go towards safety, even on short passages. Stay safe
Got to get out pretty wide to nullify the backwash effect from the cliffs, Sydney/South Coast. Spent a lot of time in BB in the 60s/70s as a kid, Pop had a house next to the bridge , north side, good fishing back then. The train runs from Nowra up to Sydney FYI. Port Hacking/Cronulla, would make a good short stay Port from there. Anyway, keep on, keeping on.
Yeah you get out wide to be away form the backwash and then end up in the current going south. Cant win going north in NSW. Staying in Gunamatta bay for a while now.
@Sailing Learning By Doing well done, my home port, should be pretty protected in Gunamatta... Agree about the current ect, pain in the arse.... Anyway, relax while this blow is on.... Might go for a walk later, maybe spot ya and say allo, allo. Ha.
While I think Marie is a great person, and I'm glad she is on this adventure called life with you, I'm also glad to see you solo sailing. That's how I found this channel, and it's a dream of mine. But, I guess I gotta take my wife with me.... 😅 Well done Vernon.
Haha, thanks. I guess its just important to find the balance. Marie loves living on the boat and all that entails but doesn't really like the passages. Thats sorts fine by me as I love the passages and am fine going solo.
G/day , mate just a quick one , when l set up my screecher/code zero , l run an endless line from the furler on the retractable bow sprint, down the port hull to the cock pit...perfect when single handing the 45ft cat😊
Yeah thats ideal. My screecher furler is too small, there's no way I could furl the sail with the lines running back to the cockpit, way to much friction. I'm hoping to get a bigger diameter one soon.
Oh , just one thing , l did forget say l do use the port deck winch with 2 mitres of extra endless line & a milwaukee mud mixer with a winch bit (makes every winch on board electric) & the furler wheel would be lucky to be 200mm , I'll measure it next time l go down....cheers
Problem with these large roached racing type mainsails is you can’t let them out to 90deg, like a good old masthead. Which in my mind makes it a whole lot safer as you can spill wind easily. Anyway, just shows how easy to sail a big cat is. Glad to see you used a harness.
There's probably not a catamaran on earth that you can let the boom go 90deg out. Cats dont have backstaysin general so their shrouds do that job and as such come aft way further than on many mono's. Many modern mono's also have very swept-back spreaders an with them you cant let the boom out very far. My last Mono was like this. Mostly its faster on these type of boats not to go on a run but run angles.
@@SailingLearningByDoing my first cat had a mast head rig, with rear stays, so you could let the main right out. If hit by a gust / squall you could sit beam on with the main let right out, very safe. You can also, say on a reach, let out the main sufficient to part spill some wind and balance the sails. Ok not ultimately as fast, but for a singlehanded sailor, so much safer. And with that margin of safety you probably go just as fast. Swept stays and big roached mainsails are a fashion fad that has no place on a cruising yacht.
@@robdotcom71 that depends entirely on how it’s set up. Modern sloops with powered winches and bow thrusters can be sailed solo even at 50-60ft. Look at the Imoca class 60’s, sailing round the world solo. At what point does a solo cruising sailor need so much room for though? I think 40ft is a good size.
I don't know about anyone else but I have a lot of trouble understanding what Marie is saying, More volume please. Great series of videos Vernon love the content.

Amazing the speed you get with such little wind, cats like these are the mutz nutz. perfect boat for someone like me who just wants to do coastal laps of Oz or a dart out to the islands. Can I ask why you were running on just one engine, whats the thinking there?
Yeah thats what I loved about Schiehallion and now True Runner to an even greater extent. Being able to do a passage averaging 7-8kts with under 15kts of wind is great! Big heavy boats that dont get moving properly until the wind is between 15-20kts are always going to have the accompanying seas that go with it. I just know from sailing a lot in the tropics, if you have a heavy boat then you will spend more time motoring than sailing.
Seems the builder did a first rate job on your boat. I was previously wondering why you were so good at engine maintenance on the old boat, but if you grew up with engines you have done it all before.
Hi Vernon I saw how you put your fenders away into a deep looker I have found a real handy solution for storing fenders and ropes I would love to send you a photo what I did on my Catalina How do I send you s photo? Cheers Reiner
I didn’t notice if you were wearing a lifeline while setting dais and moving about the decks. Always clip yourself in .too many solo sailors go missing , probably by a moments inattention.
2 hours coming in. Since then I've realised that this boats depth sounder is set up different then on Schihallion. This boat shows "depth under keel", last boat showed "total depth" So it was around 80cm deeper than I said on the video. 🤷🏼
